Help:Ask a wiki question/Archive2
Where to put my list.
Hi. I was able to extract a list of GWEN outposts from Gw.dat that appears to be complete. Is there a place on the wiki where I can put it? Chriskang 19:22, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
- Rawr. I would imagine if you can get territory names linked to the outposts you could start a page such as Istan -elviondale (tahlk) 22:25, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

CSS & javascript
Hi. Here's my question of the day : if I edit my monobook.css and my monobook.js. Where are the changes going to take place? No doubt it will affect my own user page when I see it but :
- will it affect other users watching my page?
- will it affect my navigation when i'm browsing someone else's userpage?
And if my first statement is false, is there a way to create a customized css/javascript that everyone can see when browsing my userpage (i tried <style></style> & <script></script> but those html tags don't work). Thanks. Chriskang 14:03, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- It will NOT affect other users, unless it is implemented in the various CSS and JS pages for the different styles on this wiki. (MediaWiki:Common.css for example). It will only affect your own way of browsing the wiki. If you want to do something custom, you'll have to ask the users you want to benefit from it, to implement the same JS or CSS code into their own monobook.css and monobook.js pages. -- (CoRrRan / talk) 14:08, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- And perhaps <style></style> doesn't work, but <div style=""></div> does work. -- (CoRrRan / talk) 14:10, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks CoRrRan. I'll try with <div style="">. What about the javascript part? How can I setup a script that everyone can see when browsing my page? Chriskang 14:17, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- That'll be impossible, unless you can get a consensus to add that script into the MediaWiki:Common.js. And I doubt that'll get consensus. The other solution is to just make it easy for others to copy your JS-code and implement it themselves into their own style's JS-page. (See for example how poke did it with his GWWTools: User:Poke/GuildWarsWikiTools#Installation.) -- (CoRrRan / talk) 14:23, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- Nevermind. I just wanted to add some eye-candies to my userpage but if it's not possible, I won't. Nothing important here. Thanks again CoRrRan. Chriskang 14:29, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Icons
How do u make an icon properly in your signature, as in have this icon: appear before youre signature like this:Raph(time and date) without typing this:"image:dervish-icon.png"Raph (time and date)--Raph 22:58, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
- See GWW:SIGN. Specifically, you'd have to turn on a custom sig. Also, you'd probably want to upload a smaller version of the image for sig use (19x19 at the largest), or resize it via [[Image:dervish-icon.png|19px]]. (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 23:10, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, according the signature policy, he has to re-upload the dervish icon (renamed appropriately) for his personal use and make it redirect to his user page. -- ab.er.rant 02:58, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
Article editing etiquette
Hi there, sorry to bother you with this possibly trivial question, but I'm new to Wiki and I wanted to be sure I did this right ...
I've been working on an overhaul for the Item Stub on inscriptions. Should I just go ahead and make my changes now that I'm ready? Or should I be flagging my workings in Requests for comment or somewhere else and waiting for feedback first?

Creating a formula to work on here
I have been trying for a few days to get a template formula to work that I want to use to create a nice table for showing your titles but would only require the user to type in what there current points are in the tittle. I have figured out how to do most of it but I can not figure out how to get it to display the title name based on if statements or based on the switch. I have been reading a lot on the help boards and it does not explain well how things work but from what i can see my statment should be working even though it is not. If someone can help me that would be great. Thanks. The code is here. Pimpologist 19:38, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- There's already a template like that, {{Title list}} and associated {{Title/foo}} templates, unless you're shooting for a different format. If you are, see [1] if you haven't already been there. From what I see on that page the {{ #if: {{ #ifexpr: (expr) }} | true | false}} will always be true as long as the expression is valid. To do what your aiming at you'd use nested #ifexpr: statements. You can take a look at {{Title/Cartographer}} as an example. --Valshia 20:24, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Profanity on pages
What is the policy regarding profanity? Should i report the page or just ingore it or what.--Coridan 01:37, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
- I remember seeing a dis"cuss"ion on this just recently- profanity isn't forbidden, depending on usage. I forgot the term, but its when its more directed at a person rather than an utterance. -elviondale (tahlk) 01:44, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

I often look at this site and my family is in the same room and my son is often sitting on my lap. When he sees curse words...it is very frustrating. I would really like to see a definitive answer to this questions. As I doubt I can continue to view the "official" wiki if they allow things of this nature. I don't know why they couldn't institute something along the lines of what the game has as far as "filtered" words go. If its bad enough to filter in game...shouldn't the same be true for the Games Official Wiki? --Coridan 02:04, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
- Right now the closest things we have are the policy against personal attacks, which only covers epithets directed against a specific contributor, and the user pages policy, which bans patently offensive content on user pages. I believe the concensus was that most inappropriate content would fall clearly under vandalism or personal attacks, and that a policy to deal with non-vandalous, non-personal attack inappropriate content wasn't a priority, and could be dealt with later. Feel free to propose one. -- Gordon Ecker 03:25, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

- What's allowed on TV is highly dependent on what country you live in, so it won't be so clear-cut. Coridan has a good point about in-game filters; if the game doesn't allow it, it might make a good case. I certainly wouldn't mind policies or guidelines that try to outline acceptable behavior. Coridan, it's only the talk pages and user pages that you need to be worried about, as articles are kept free of profanity. But given that this is a publicly editable wiki, making a policy for it is one thing, actually being successful in preventing people from using them is another. -- ab.er.rant 04:56, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

See also and attribute points
Hi there, I've only had GW a couple of months now and I've been using this sight from almost day one, very useful thank you.
However I have two questions:
Sometimes when I access character pages (eg: Mesmer, Ranger etc) certain links (see also) appear at the bottom of the main article to things like (daggers, guides etc) and sometimes these links are not there, is there a reason for this?
Secondly and for me more importantly there was a great page article on spending attribute points, it may have been called attribute point allocation, or spending. It detailed all the many different combinations of how to spend your 200 attribute points. It had a table listing the variations of say spreading your points over 2, 3, 4, 5 etc attributes and how many attributes you could have at 10 points.
It was a very useful guide when creating characters.
Thanks in advance, Thomas -- Ruffenredie 09:57, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
- There can be two sets of links at the bottom of an article, one see also section put there by editors themselves, and one section in a box below that that lists the categories the article falls under. In both cases they have to be put there by editors, so it's just a matter of whether they've been added or not.
- As for the article you mentioned ... might this be it? Attribute point. -- pullus talk 10:35, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Inclusion
ok, my turn to ask again: what change does a colon before the template's page name cause? whether i use {{:User:Y0_ich_halt/Templates/...}} or {{User:Y0_ich_halt/Templates/...}}
doesn't seem to make any difference. - Y0_ich_halt 16:32, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
- A colon before the template name is used only when you are transcluding something that's in the main space. (f.i. as used at Game updates to show all sub-articles). For articles in other namespaces, the colon simply makes no difference. One particular case to be noted is when you call an article from the Template namespace without using the namespace name: {{:Pipe}} will not work, as it looks for the page Pipe which does not exist; on the other hand, {{:Template:Pipe}} will work, and so will {{Pipe}}. --Dirigible 16:56, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
- ok, thanks! - Y0_ich_halt 17:04, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Detection of user "duplicates" in user categories
Ok, not sure if this is the right place to make this suggestion, but could not find anywhere else. Anyway, as far as I understand, the categories will automatically remove duplicates. So that if two separate userboxes (or two of the same even) point to the same category, the user will only be listed once in that category. So far so good. However, I have noticed that a lot of users put the userboxes in pageincludes, which has the unfortunate side effect that both the user page as well as the included subpage get separate listings in the category. To me this really clutters up the categories, especially when users have many pages, and my question is this: Is there any way to reconfigure the "duplicate detection" to include subpages?--Lensor (talk) 15:40, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
- well, i don't now if it's possible, but it's good you just pointed that out. ima set includeonly now. - Y0_ich_halt 15:43, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think there's currently a way to set that up within the wiki system itself, Lensor, simply because the "duplicate detection" you mention is basically just the parser parsing all of the code together before actually checking which categories to include the page in, and not keeping track of the # of times the inclusion is called for (thus, if the same page has 2 identical category tags in its code, it doesn't get included twice because the parser doesn't keep track of the # of tags there are, only whether it should be included in that category or not). Since subpages aren't parsed together, there's no way to really tell whether the subpage is intended to be in the category or not.
- You'd effectively have to check a number of things:
- Are both the subpage and the main page included in the same category?
- If so, is the subpage only included in categories that the main page is also in?
- If so, is the subpage not included into any other pages besides the main page?
- If so, is the subpage not linked to from any other pages besides the main page?
- If the answer to any of the above questions is no, then there's no way to tell whether the subpage and main page should both be in the category or not (at least, from a parser's point of view), and any determination of category et cetera should be made explicit via includeonly and/or noinclude tags. monster skill icons size
Hi, Was going through Magus Stones to update the creatures there. However, the Heket there use this monster skill, Ehzah from Above. Looking at the other monster skills, the skill icons are nice and big. Is there anywhere I can find these pictures? Closest I get is the activation bar, which isn't that big. Heinrich 21:37, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Sometimes users are able to obtain these images from the gw.dat-file. However, AFAIK this is quite a laborious process, since the images aren't tagged/named, so it's a little bit of a memory game. I've been over at GuildWiki for a while...and finally decided to move over here. I'm having trouble adapting my userpage to this wiki though as it seems that the NavFrame code and also the collapsible table code is not included in the CSS and Javascript on this site. I've been using NavFrame for a while over at GuildWiki and when it didn't work I looked up alternatives to NavFrame on MediaWiki and the only other one I could find was collapsible tables. Those don't seem to work either. Is there anything else being used here to easily Show/Hide a block of content on a userpage. I've been using it for showing/hiding the details of each of my characters...of which I have quite a few. You can see what my userpage is supposed to look like over at Guildwiki, which still hosts my original userpage (and will until I get this one figured out).--Thor79••Talk 23:34, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- There wasn't any conclusive need for a Show/Hide feature so it wasn't requested. See GWWT:TECH#NavFrame (one of a few discussions on this). Also, given the size of the user page (lovely character boxes! :P blatant self-promotion, hahahah), ahem, anyway, you might want to take a look at GWW:USER. We've reached an agreement that the main user page should not be overly large :) -- ab.er.rant 02:03, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
- Hehe..hey there. Without the Show/Hide feature I wouldn't leave my userpage as it is now anyway...that's why I want it...to reduce the visible size of it (even if it doesn't actually reduce the file size of it). - >.< I should really check this page more often.
- Anyway, what you're looking for is actually a function of addPortletLink. It looks like you already got it working, though. I'm going to answer just in case you didn't ;)
- addPortletLink has the function
* @param String accesskey -- accesskey to activate this link (one character, try to avoid conflicts)
- Here's an example:
addPortletLink("warn", "http://wiki.guildwars.com/index.php?&action=edit&fakeaction=warn&type=ohelothar&title=" + title, "Welcome", "hello", "Add a welcome message", "");
- By putting a single character (watch out for conflicts!) into that last pair of "", this link gains a shortcut. Depending on the system, that shortcut will be [alt]+char, [alt]+[shift]+char, [ctrl]+char, or [shift]+[esc]+char (Opera, wth?). Fortunately, the tooltip should show the correct shortcut. For more information, see Meta's shortcut page. MisterPepe talk 18:06, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Aligning charts
Alright, this sounds nooby since I've been here on the wiki for so long, but how would I align a chart like this...
|
to the right?--§ Eloc § 21:28, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
This table is aligned to the right! | The code is: {| style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: 10px;"
|
No text will be on the left of the table! |
And this text is immediately after the table (not floated!)
Border around a picture
Can anyone enlighten me on how to put a border around a picture? Specifically, profession colors around pictures.User:Hmufoofoo 00:30, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
- you can also use a division, like this: <div style="background-color:#dfd; border:1px dotted #ada; width:22px">[[Image:Guild_Hardcore_Militants_United_bullet_sig.gif]]</div>, creates this: . the disadvatage is, if you don't set the width, it will use the full line. - Y0_ich_halt 12:11, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Making a profile page
I've seen a few GWW pages for player profiles. How do I bring something up so that I can make my own page? I know how to go into another player's profile and use theirs as a guideline, but I just don't know how to bring up a new page for myself to make it. Help is greatly appreciated.
- At the top of the page, click on your log in name which should be a red link. Then put in whatever you want on your page.--§ Eloc § 23:05, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Claiming anonymous edits
Is there a way to take credit for edits done anonymously and listed by ip address, and if there is should I even bother doing it? -ThornClaymore 23:14, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
- why would you wanna take credit for edits by an anon? - Y0_ich_halt 23:21, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
- Eloc, we're under the GFDL, a license which has a primary purpose of making sure credit is given where credit is due.
- ThornClaymore, you're welcome to post a link to your user page on the user page of the IP address in question. It's possible somebody might contest it if the IP is used by others, but if your IP address is unique to you, it shouldn't be an issue. —Tanaric 00:23, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- You should be fine to replace signatures on talk pages too. I am sure we have all made a post and signed anonymously because we didn't realise we had been signed out at least once. :) --Lemming 17:28, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you everyone for your input. The main reason I asked is that I'm still a newb to this wiki system, and if I had made or will make an error in my editing I'd like to know about so I don't do it again. That being said, so far I've just made small changes (including the one I was talking about), so its not not a big deal if the edit is left anonymously. I was just wondering it was possible to do. account help
i for got my account name and need help. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:68.63.97.102 .
See the Guild Wars support site for details on how to recover a forgotten account. (Specifically, this page if your preferred language is English.)(Aiiane - talk - contribs) 02:58, 7 October 2007 (UTC)- Eeep, forgot which page I was on for a sec. :) If you forgot your wiki account name, try looking at some of the pages you contributed to, if any, and check the History for your edits - it'll list what user created them. Worst case, just create a new account. (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 03:00, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Catagories
I would just like someone to point me in the right direction, on how to edit a catagory. When I edit a page containing a catagory, all I get is the catagory name in square brackets, and I don't know where the actual editable list is kept. Thanks...LeFick 21:46, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
- To edit a category, click on the link to it on the bottom of the page containing it (in the grey box), or go to the article named "Category:<category name here>" - anja 21:53, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, but all that seems to do is move me from one list to another. Specific example: I intend to add FIREWORK to the catagory ITEMS under F. I can not figure out how. LeFick 22:02, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
- Oh! Then I told you totally the wrong thing :P Add [[Category:Items]] to the bottom of the article. (It doesn't really matter where, it's just custom here to put it at the bottom). When you save the page, it will show up in the Category:Items list. - anja 22:11, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
- It works Perfectly! I understand how lists like the Glossary work now! Thanks! LeFick 22:59, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Change Category Name
Can you change the name of an category page? Bart M 16:49, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
- You can always create a new category with the name you want. The problem is moving the pages in a category to the new category, since articles are added to categories by placing a certaintag to the code of the specific article. Therefor you need to go through all of the pages and change the category tag to place them in the new category. -- (gem / talk) 17:16, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Revision number
How do you find the revision number of an edit. For example, when some people revert vandalism, they say "RV revision ###### by ____". I knew how to do this a few months ago, but I never used it and forgot, but now it's simply annoying me. Thanks for the help :). Calor - talk 01:35, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
- In the history, mouse over the date of the edit in question. The url it links to includes a portion "oldid=######".
- (P.S. - the message you see which includes the revision number and such is generally the result of a sysop using the wiki's built-in rollback links which show up on the RC and history pages if you're a sysop. It automatically fills in such info, which is generally why you see it.) (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 02:20, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Template List
I've been to the Wiki formating page, and I have browsed hundreds of pages, but is there a centralized list of available templates? LeFick 03:51, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
