Background[edit]

Khalifa Asad comes from a long line of fishermen, a common profession in Chahbek Village. Just like his father and countless ancestors before him, Khalifa also made a living out of this humble profession and by the time he was 35, he had a beautiful wife and two young children. Life was good, until the corsairs came.

Under the darkness of night, the corsairs managed to evade the Istani navy and ambush the unsuspecting village and its inhabitants. The local Shorewatchers were slaughtered swiftly, being caught unawares by the silent and deadly corsair invasion. Khalifa's ship was just returning to port when he noticed from a distance that the village was on fire. Khalifa realised his family, even though they lived on the outskirts of town, were in grave danger and he had to act fast. Khalifa set sail for a natural harbour not far from the village to ensure he wouldn't get spotted by the corsairs and to get help from a nearby Sunspear guardhouse.

As Khalifa arrived at the guardhouse, the Sunspears were already setting off for the village to repel the invaders. Khalifa approached one of the Sunspears and pleaded him to help his family who were on the outskirts of the village but could be in grave danger. The Sunspear said that they were under orders to confront the corsairs who were currently ransacking the village centre. Khalifa pleaded again, begging for the Sunspear to show compassion. Reluctantly, the Sunspear finally agreed that he would come along but said the rest had to go fight on the main front.

When Khalifa and the Sunspear arrived at his home, they discovered that it was already on fire. Khalifa hoped and prayed that the advice he gave his wife and children when such an emergency occurred was remembered and promptly asked the Sunspear to follow him to his shed a bit further up the hill. This was the nominated hiding place and Khalifa's last hope that his family was alive. Khalifa and the Sunspear soon heard raucous laughter mixed with the screams of a woman and children. They started to run towards the sounds and soon came across Khalifa's shed. A couple of corsairs were attempting to barge their way inside where Abu's family were locked up, fearful for their lives. The Sunspear whispered to Khalifa that he would take the corsair on the left while Khalifa should dispatch the one on the right. He then handed Khalifa a spare spear he carried to use. Khalifa stared with anxiety at the spear as he had never killed a man in his entire life - however, his family was in danger and he would ensure that these despicable corsairs would never get their hands on them! Silently, Khalifa and the Sunspear crept around in an attempt to flank the corsairs. Soon they were within striking range of the corsairs, although the corsairs had at that very moment managed to break open the door and were just about to run in. The Sunspear threw his spear with lightning speed and killed the corsair on the left. Khalifa, unfortunately, deliberated before throwing his spear and ended up missing his target altogether. Fear started flowing through Khalifa's veins as he saw the corsair run in, scimitar at the ready, prepared to murder his family within only a matter of seconds. With no time to lose, Khalifa ran for the spear and nibmly kicked it up to catch it with his throwing hand. Standing in the doorway with the corsair about to make his family no more, Khalifa threw the spear with all his might.

The corsair fell a couple feet away from his family, gasping in pain, before finally dying.

Khalifa knew that from that night on he was eternally indebted to the Order of the Sunspears and that if he truly wanted to protect his family, he would need to join their ranks. Most of new recruits to the Sunspears start as young adults so Khalifa was a bit of an oddity being around fifteen years senior. However, his relentless determination in training and his humble nature, earned the respect of his comrades and he soon became affectionately known as "Abu Asad" or "Father Lion" in his home village's tongue. With his training complete and a new name, "Abu Asad" now seeks to rid the lands of Elona of evil and ensuring his children have the prospect of a safer future.
