Userpage Layout

Emily, my name is Attila, I'm a FFXI player, and I'm a big fan of the layout you have here. I've gotten most of it to work, but when I attempted to add an 8th tab to the TabHeader, it broke it. I was wondering if you could possibly troubleshoot it for me. Here's the link to my TabHeader, I appreciate any help you can offer. http://wiki.bluegartrls.com/User:Attila/TabsHeader
Any messages can be left on my talk page of course. Thank you again, and happy gaming!

Remove the line-height:1px; from your TabsTop and it should work poke | talk 08:00, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
Rather than remove it, I did some editing to it, and I think I've got it just right. Thank you very much. You've been most helpful ^_^

Male Monk armor style: elbows

If you look on these pages, it seems common that the handwraps are not close to the elbow, like in Monk Canthan armor, Monk Kurzick armor/Male, Monk Elite Canthan armor , Adorned Handwraps (not really a set but hey). On some sets: Monk Norn armor, Monk Ancient armor/Male, Monk Elite Kurzick armor, Gallery of male monk Primeval armor it does act more of sleeves than hand wraps. It it by design? If it is by design could you tell me which chestpieces actually grace the elbow (it looks odd when there's an elbow sticking out) so I can make armor combos using the Dwarven pieces (Adorned Handwraps)? Thanks in advance for your response. --Life Infusion «T» 04:12, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Eek! You know, I'm not sure from memory. I can try to track down this information for you, but until I can get to talk to the artists and check out the renders (which may take a bit with the coming holidays), you should ask someone like Anja or Bex (or any other other super dedicated armor folks). I'd bet that they may even know that information off the top of their heads. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 00:32, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
It would be rude of me not to leave a comment so yeh...I guess I'll try asking Anja and Bexor (though they likely on on holiday break). Thanks for your help :) --Life Infusion «T» 02:38, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Happy new year

Happy new year, Emily, both in your personal life and at work. Thanks for being one of the few people who have played a key role in keeping the relationship between ANet and this wiki's community positive and productive; as someone who was at first skeptic about the feasibility of such an endeavour, I appreciate and respect your contribution towards that goal immensely. Cheers, --Dirigible 18:10, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Superbowl trivia......

Hi Emily, I was watching the big game last night and at one point I saw someone on the Giants team(#66 if i remember right )who's last name was Diehl. Does this have anything to do with you, probably not but thanks anyway --The Forsaken One 16:52, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Ya know, I don't think I'm related to that Diehl. It's possible, since my family is from the Pennsylvania/New York area, but it's nothing I can prove or disprove. I actually hate the Giants (although I can tolerate them more than the Rams). I'm a Seahawks gal through and through...even though I completely idolized Joe Montana when I was younger. just a heads up.

hello my love, just to let you know i checked your wiki page but the links to your characters and archives seems to not be working right. when you click the "characters" tab although its the right page, the tab that shows as being highlighted is your journal tab, the same thing happens with your archives tab too. It's just a nav bar issue i think. I had a wee look at the coding and i could have fixed at for ya but didnt want to mess with your user page. the problem is that on the coding of your "characters" page you have "User:Emily_Diehl/TabsHeader|This=3" typed at the top instead "This=4" and the same with the characters archives page except you need to put in "this =5". Hope the info helps. -- Salome 03:01, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Aww, thanks for catching the mistake! I made that new tab at the end of a workday, so I'm sure my brain was just scrambled. I'll go in and fix it up. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:59, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Emily as you confirmed it was a mistake, I went in and fixed it for ya. I hope you don't mind and that I didn't overstep the mark, my love. Oh by the way, great user page! -- Salome 23:28, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Your job at ArenaNet

So how did you get your job at ArenaNet and what education do you have (like University or College degrees)? I'm sure you might have been asked this question before, but you have so many archives to go through. — Eloc 02:04, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

More like, hey Emily, I want to work where you work for also! But then again, that's just me. heh. Renin 02:42, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Hiya Eloc! This could be a long story with lots of moving parts. I spoke at PAX about it last year...I wish they had published the feeds. Anyways, I got my job with a lot of focus and persistence. My original degree was computer science, and I've done various things professionally like web design, PC service/support, but I don't believe those things were a big part of the decision to bring me onto the team. When I got brought in for my interview, I was working as a retail manager at a local EB Games, having moved across the country in hopes of landing a games industry job (and not wanting to get back into web design). I think the big time thing was the amount of passion I had for Guild Wars and games in general. I don't think I can really stress just how ridiculously into games I am and have been my entire life. From growing up and falling in love with my Atari, to playing pretty much everything that I could get my hands on since then, to devoting tons of free time to crazy game-related side projects, it's (embarrassingly) obvious how much I live and breathe games. In my interviews, I was completely grilled about all kinds of game related things. Luckily, I can talk animatedly for hours on any game subject you lob at me, so I guess I did OK :)
So, very long story very short, I think my background in computers and management helped to get me to the point where I had a skill set attractive enough to pop out of a pile of resumes, and helped me to feel confident enough to try to apply in the first place. I don't really think that for my particular position(s) that it made much of a difference though. I love my job, but I'm not going to lie. It's hard work and long hours (I'm often here in the studio for 10 - 12 hours and I don't even put in as much as others do....especially during crunch times). To be able to survive in an industry like games, you have to really love what you do. It's not a job that you can just go to, work at, get stuff done, and go home and forget. There's a lot of collaboration, team building, communication, passion, stress, and that often times will suck your personal life into the mix and wrap it up so tight that you don't really know where one starts and one ends. (At least, that's how I feel. Try going out and telling a non-gamer that you work on video games for a living...the reactions are pretty comical sometimes.)
I can go on for hours about this, but if I don't finish up some more stuff tonight, I am going to be hosed for tomorrow. I hope this helps a little, and let me know if I can help more. I may not be able to give really specific details about ArenaNet, but I'd more happy to give general tips. I think it's awesome that you're interested in getting into games. I can totally relate! :p --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 03:21, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Sounds very interesting. Ya, I am interested in someday hopefully getting into a career of video games (hoping for ArenaNet :P). But anyways, I'm looking to get a degree in computer engineering as I'm joining the Canadian Air Force for like 8 years first. Would that help get a job in gaming industry as the degree is computer related? I'm also thinking of going to Devry or this one college in Toronto. — Eloc 04:29, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Same, interested to join the multi-billion industry that is gaming. I guess it helps to have experience and a degree. I'm thinking also of moving half a world to vancouver to study game design. I love gaming, especially RPGs. hahaha. Damn you squeenix! Renin 04:39, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Well, from everything that I have experienced and noticed, degrees are important for programmers, but ability seems to be more so for any position. Even if you have a degree, code samples and experience with whatever the team is looking for in a particular position are usually more important. If you have a fancy degree but no solid code samples and experience to back it up, you may not do as well as someone that doesn't have that same education but has years of working on projects/a solid code base to support them. I'm not saying that an education isn't important, because certain programs will teach you valuable skills that you can use to develop your abilities. Just don't expect schooling to teach you everything you need to know out of the box. Most of the value is going to come from using that stuff and applying it to real projects ;) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 04:47, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Aaah, so breaking into the industry with little or no XP (pardon my pun hahaha) seems such a huge wall, but then again, if we really want it, we'll make a way to gain exp and allot skills over all our own attributes. mwahahaha. The degree will help I'm sure but you're right. Now if only I can convert my 18M exp in GW to RL exp... hahaha Renin 05:08, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Yep, exactly. School gives you some additional tools and (usually) some kick in the pants to apply yourself. If you don't have the passion to drive yourself and make yourself actually do stuff on your free time and work towards your end goal of landing a job in games, you're probably not going to get very far. I know so many people that thought the magic key to success was "getting that degree". Some of those same people are now in totally unrelated fields with huge school bills because they slacked off and managed to squeek through school to get the paper and then realized that they didn't actually have the chops and skills/examples of skills to land that dream job. It's a huge (expensive) bummer for them to get out and have that realization hit after the fact. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 05:20, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Degrees help but experience is an asset as well. A degree backed up by experience - l33tness. Pretty much that's the case for every other white-collared occupation out there Barinthus 05:52, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

So where does one start if that person has zero or no exp? Renin 05:53, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Start doing things in your spare time to build up a portfolio. Then go for an entry level job. - BeX iawtc 05:55, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
What BeXor said. In my experience people who does hiring often like to see applicants with some experience out there in the "trenches." If you can, get internships - unpaid even. You can use those to start building an experience foundation which you can use to acquire different work to get even more experience. People going straight to the top with just a degree and fresh out of a college or training school is extremely rare - you gotta earn it with sweat and time Barinthus 06:38, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
I am being totally curious (and not pointed) but how many hours are usually worked by playing Guild Wars? Do you get time to test the waters so to speak, especially with the current flow of player's playing time in live? I know that in some fan reviews of GWEN a lot of people felt some content was produced by those that love and play the game, but dichotomously some of the content felt like it was produced by those that may love the game but don't play it nearly enough. What are your thoughts on this? --Ravious 16:00, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
If you are enthusiastic enough and interested and are also able to show it to others, you just need to get in touch with the right people and you might get a good kick start. A degree most definitely isn't a requirement, but it does help a lot to get the first job or two so you can actually get work experience that you can show off later on. Personally I've been into all kinds of games since I was very little, playing board games, role playing games, computer games, console games and mobile games all my life, and I've always worked on all kinds of smaller and larger projects of my own (still working on my own role playing game ;) ). This combined with getting to know one certain person got me a job just three weeks ago in a company that is working on a machine dance game of it own, and not just any job but development + partial coding of an entire external tool that will be supplied with the game. Basically I don't have a lot of work experience, I'm still working on my degree and I've just turned 19 last fall; but still, I got a great job in a good company and it's all just because I've dedicated so much time to gaming and tried hard. -- Gem (gem / talk) 16:17, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Your userpage tabs

Hi Emily, I first noticed this on Lemming's page but since you have the same problem I thought I might as well let you know too. There seems to be a problem with the tabs that appear on your page, in particular the pages tab 1 and tab 2. According to what Lem mentioned it only appears to affect Internet Explorer and not Firefox, when he changed the code line-height:0.2em to a higher number; in his case 0.95em; it fixed the problem where the text cut out half way up the tab. Just thought I'd let you know since it seems to be fixed on Lem's page now :) --Kakarot Talk 00:45, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

A hi and a little something to read

Hi, how's life nowdays? Haven't seen a lot of you on the wiki lately, and you're still my favourite in the team. ;) Been busy with the game or taking some vacation? No hurry to answer if you don't find the time, I'm enjoying my vacation and can find other things to do than stalk other people on the internet.

As a side note, to pretend that I actually had something else to do than being interested in your life, would you mind forwarding this article to the designers for some food of thought. I'm not saying that GW is suffering from all of the problems described in the article, but it does have some (well, a lot of) good points. And yeah, I know, this kind of stuff should probably go through the Community Manager, but I'm not comfortable at all with the new CM. -- Gem (gem / talk) 23:45, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Interesting article, finally someone wrote an article about how WoW is not the best game out there. Hope the designers read this so they won't do the same mistakes that Blizzard did in WoW with GW 2. Although I have a complete trust in Anet ;) --MageUser MageMontu sig.pngMontu 22:10, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Heya Gem! Life's going good over here...I've been crazy busy lately with all kinds of web stuff. We've got a lot of big plans for the GW2 site, which means lots of planning and figuring out what needs to be done when and how. It make my brains scramble already :) Thanks for the Gamasutra link...I'll pass it along for the rest of the team to read too. I hope you're enjoying your vacation. I'll be following your example by taking Thursday and Friday off this week to try to burn some of my extra time off. I need to get my mind out of overload before it completely stops working. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:36, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
You sound just like me just before my vacation, doing a lot and getting a lot done, but almost burning myself out completely. Good to hear that you're taking a break too. :) We'll time to get out and show our Canadian friend around the city. -- Gem (gem / talk) 09:56, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the link, Pants. I'll check it out in a bit. Machinima is something that we've definitely discussed here on the web side. I don't have any clear news on what we'll be doing or even what we'd like to do, but know that it's something we've talked about. I've created a suggestions page over here, so please feel free to share your suggestions on things you and your fellow filmmakers would like to see in the future. I'll make sure to monitor the comments and use them in our discussions here. Thanks :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:57, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
