white text on black background

Why is this difficult? I am interested since I've been reading that way for many years...for IRC, for DOS boxes and other coding, for text-based games, and so on. I have always found black text on white difficult, especially with computers, due to glare and the sheer "brightness" of white. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 01:40, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

just a side note black backgrounds use less power from your monitor... see blackle [1]- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 02:03, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
I personally find it much more difficult to read white on black than black on white. I know that there was much debate during the policy change discussion regarding guild pages that were in high contrast to the rest of the wiki. It was my general impression being involved in that discussion that many people found those types of pages more difficult to read. It is also one reason that I believe the general consensus on the overall CSS of GWW was determined to be black text on white background though I wasn't around for those discussions, so I could be mistaken. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 03:46, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
(I'm not sure of the context behind this discussion, can someone help me out?) I think white text on a black tablet against a light/white background is harder to read. --03:51, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
There's a lot of interesting reading with the research that's been done on this topic. Just do a general web search such topics as: "color contrast and readabiity", "black text on white background" or its inverse, etc. Seryu 03:56, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
I prefer white text on a black background. It makes it easier on my eyes and for me to read. I think they might not figured out how to make black appear as a background quite as much as white in some codings. So, we have what we have. Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 08:07, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Suppose a user had access to an unlimited number of distinct IP addresses, what would you and the other admins eventually do? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Zmission (talk).
Oops, your premise is flawed, there are only a finite number of IPs. --User Ezekial Riddle silverbluesig.pngRIDDLE 06:26, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
There is a functionally unlimited number. Thousands could be used a day and it would still take numerous lifetimes to get through them all and that's just on IPv4 which is nearing the end of its life.
The latest vandal fighting tip I learned was that you can put a &bot=1 or ?bot=1 in the url of RC or the user's contribs, and when you rollback, it automatically flags those edits as bot. --JonTheMon 06:27, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
That would make rollbacks quicker, but wouldn't prevent the edits from occurring the first place.
As to what we would do? Keep banning until he gets bored. I mean, when none of his edits live more than a couple of seconds, what's the point? They all eventually do get bored and find other amusement. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 06:30, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

KJ, I neither know nor care about the history of this thread beyond this particular talk page. The content clearly isn't welcome here (based on Wyn's first reply) and the user is a troll degrading women. If it had stuck to whatever it's original source was, with users that didn't mind such talk, I wouldn't have cared. As it is, TV instead chose to move it across the wiki to get as much attention focused on himself as possible. That's not what we're here for. —Tanaric 19:03, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
[3] I disagree wyn, you went onto another persons talk page and got involved, effectively, "starting it". Also I don't see why my comment is being removed as I am not trolling/attacking anybody, simply pointing out that this could have ALL been avoided if wyn just didn't get involved in discussions not even involving here. --Frosty User Frosty Frostcharge sig.jpg 19:08, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Right so banning people first THEN telling people to be quiet is the way it goes, bit like shoot first ask questions later isn't it? Bracing for impact. --Frosty User Frosty Frostcharge sig.jpg 19:14, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
I believe Pling is not asking TV/KJ to be quiet, but that the continuation of this thread is moot at this point. However, if you still feel strongly that the blocks were unwarranted, you can take it to Pling or another admin. — Gares 19:22, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
Because that works? the wiki is known for being ridiculous with this stuff. arguing with an admin is just stupid when they can go to irc and make fun of you or sock then troll you. whats the point? 19:28, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

In reference to this section and the section above, stop being trolled or trolling on this topic please. Tahiri didn't even really have to try to troll anyone, it pretty much just happened, so I'm not sure I can even blame him. Then of course came the second rate and unintentional trolls. Template help

Hi Wyn! Hope I'm not being a burden, but you're very good with templates, and I was wondering if I could ask for help on one. A friend has asked me to help him with his Wiki page, and I've managed to make a template for his character pages. But in the area where it has his character's story, titles, etc., it would look more balanced if I split the titles and accomplishments so that they'd be to the right of the rest of the info, but still in the same box as the biography. Whenever I change the code though, it either doesn't work, or the content that should be on the right is outside the box with the profession (lighter) color and is on the profession (light) color. I hope that makes sense, but I was wondering if you could perhaps help me fix it. The URL to the code is: here. I'd greatly appreciate it and I know my friend would too. Thanks! Elite skills

Hey Wyn, sorry to bother, but I use your elite skills template (ex: here), but for my non-main characters, I was only planning on getting (and tracking) the skills for their main profession (kind of like here). What I was wondering is if there is a way to set up a template that allows you to put in the profession (like it takes now to set the colors based on the profession) and it restricts it to displaying that profession's elite skills. Possible or should I just stick with hacking it together like the second example? -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 00:14, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Probably. Jon would be better one to ask about it though, I suck with if/else stuff. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 00:44, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
Now why am I the topic of discussion? Yeah, I could probably hack make a variant of wyn's elite skill template, but you'd have to specify what exactly you want. Do you want a way to turn off the other professions you don't want? do you want to be able to display more than 1? Do you want it to intelligently figure out if a specific profession has an elite skill and display if it does (fyi, I'm not gonna do that)? --JonTheMon 01:26, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Rant

Thanks for posting it. I had a nice laugh; want to know why?

  1. A one-day block is meaningless. Block durations do tend to increase for repeat offenses; that doesn't justify placing blocks that do absolutely nothing and claiming that they're solving problems or whatever.
  2. You are blind to the offenses you've committed. I shouldn't have to explain to you why the numerous instances of your aggressive attitude, general asshattery, and unprompted explosions on randoms are problems. Since the arbcomm, we can add heaping numbers of personal attacks to that list. (Because you're blind to your offenses, I'll tell you to take a look at Auron's talk for some of the personal attacks.)
  3. The discussion had not ended. This should be obvious, but a discussion pretty much isn't over until a few days have passed. Wiki 101.
  4. You not proxying or sockpuppeting isn't important. Your tone there implies that seem to think that it's a special thing that you actually sat out your one day ban. Good job; want a fucking medal?
  5. It's obvious you're trying to shift attention away from yourself. You and Auron represent a pretty huge duality on this wiki; one of you is popular and helpful to anyone around, one of you is a reclusive asshat who doesn't like people. The gap has narrowed in the past three or four months, but it's still there. It's pretty obvious that you're (perhaps subconsciously) using this whole thing to divert attention from yourself and onto "bad guy" Auron so you won't get the desysoping you've had coming for a long, long time.
  6. You're blind to your own special status in the community. People give a shit about Wyn. People don't give a shit about Auron, or Pling, or Tanaric, or, in general, people who don't help them directly. You're probably responsible for the creation of about half the userpages on the wiki, which gives people a bond to you. Off the top of my head, Salome does the same, and so do a lot of other sysops, though not nearly to the same degree. Poke is the most notable exception, though what he helps out with are significantly more complicated than "he made my userpage pretty :D:D:D" and, consequentially or not, are less visible/fanboi'd.
  7. Your tangent about the random IP. The people who think you're a bad sysop extend far beyond random IPs - many of them for the same reason as the random IP you mentioned.
  8. Your random personal "attacks" on said random IP. Really now, is he any less right because he has so few contributions and because you've judged them to be trollish? (Besides, lots of people have dynamic IPs, or post only from certain places.)
  9. The QQ. Apparently, life on wiki sucks for you. Want to talk about life sucking? I'm spending a day with Chloe tomorrow, not as a lover or even an ex-lover after almost four years but as a friend. It's not logical or meaningful of me, but if you want to talk about how life sucks for you for the past year, I'm more than fairly confident I can match and smash any of your QQ with my life from mid-December to now. But you're still here and, apparently, still playing Guild Wars, so it can't be that bad, can it?
  10. Your edit count is meaningless. More accurately, edit counts in general are meaningless. They change nothing; see point 8.
  11. Your predicted failure at math. I'm willing to bet you took the pic of your contributions right before you posted that rant, which means you'd have 39,456 contribs at the time of writing. (The bet I took last night won me $20, so I'm feeling lucky right about now!)
  12. Your ignorance of Auron's RfR and your own history. My major gripe against you, as you are probably perfectly well aware, is that you let your emotions affect how you use your sysop tools. Auron never lets how he feels about a situation interfere with how he handles it; you very often do. Take a look at some of those contributions you seem so proud of if you don't believe me.
  13. The way you walk into saying you should be banned. Why should you be treated any differently from Auron, indeed? Let's ban you too.
  14. Your obvious rage. umadbrah?

By the way, we're studying Woodrow Wilson and the end of World War I in history.

Turning off edits

Hi again! I noticed you've set up your main page so that no one can edit it, and I'd like to do that to my own page, but I'm not sure how. I've been looking around in my preferences but haven't been able to find it. Could you please help me? Thanks! :) Tender Wolf 20:40, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

That wouldn't be possible without stopping you from editing it as well. Protection can only be applied by a sysop. Also, page protection is generally reserved for pages which are vandalised repeatedly. To some extent, GWW:USER says that other people shouldn't be editing your userpage, and if you think someone is editing your page without your permission, you can (kindly) ask them not to.
By the way, are you sure you can't edit Wyn's userpage on your account? The protection level isn't high enough to prevent you from editing it. -- pling User Pling sig.png 20:55, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
Might be referring to the practice of transcluding everything. User Felix Omni Signature.pngelix Omni 20:58, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
He's probably referring how Wyn's page is semi-protected. imo the entire User: namespace should be blocked from ips, because people should be signing in to edit their own user page anyways. –User Balistic B d-dark.pngalistic 21:03, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
Wiki dies every time one page is protected, I'd hate to see what protecting an entire namespace would do. It would make sense, though. It would cut down on the "is this vandalism?" questions when an IP (which is generally just someone that hasn't logged in) edits a registered user's page, too. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 23:42, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
The trouble you describe comes out of people reacting badly to unlogged-in users editing their userpages, not from the actual unlogged-in users. I don't think userpages need to be protected. (And various users invite open editing on userpages, so you may even do more harm than good.) -- pling User Pling sig.png 23:50, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
Actually Freedom, protection of a namespace is done server side by ArenaNet, so it has little impact on the wiki community in general. We not only built the Feedback namespace while it was protected but we also had the ArenaNet namespace protected once Feedback was opened. My page became a massive troll/vandal target when I became a sysop. That is why it is semi protected. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 17:59, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

CNY district hosting?

Just curious but is GOD hosting a district again like last year or should I just go to any district? Only reason I ask is because for the first couple events I will be asleep and would rather get maximum rewards from the start (been rather inactive on GW lately so haven't had a chance to collect anything I have access to) and also because I trust you to have all ingredients unlike one district last year which didn't. --Kakarot Talk 03:27, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Re: Auron's talk page

Hi Wyn,

"And you should be thrown under a bus for your repeated and continued asshatery here Auron, not get nominated to be a bcrat. Get over yourself."

These kinds of personal attacks really aren't helping the situation here. I brought a case against Auron and blocked him for some of his actions -- holding him accountable and working to improve the situation. You brought a great deal of disrespect into the process in what seems to be a bid just to complain about the case against you.

Whether the conversation will continue or not once Auron gets back, I don't know, but I'd really appreciate it if you'd not dilute the issue with an irrelevant case. If you have accusations against me or any other sysop involving injustice, please take it up with us directly or with ArbComm.

Tanaric 08:09, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

NPA, Wyn!!! Bus throwing-under is pretty violent. And disrespectful to the process. --67.240.83.137 08:30, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
You know what Tanaric? I really don't give a shit what you think. I don't consider anything I said to Auron a violation of NPA, given that the "bus" I'm referring to is this community's disciplinary process, and I have referred to it in that way more than once. For anyone to think that I mean he should literally be run over by a bus is just about as ridiculous as someone saying I don't use my sysop tools for much of anything useful. Your hasty and not well thought out comments (which you actually apologized to me for in IRC if you recall) precipitated a lot of my anger so please don't come here and preach to me in fact, I would prefer you not speak to me at all. I also don't care what all the self proclaimed trolls think they are the ones that really run this place. People claim I have had an attitude problem before all this crap happened.... well, now I DO have an attitude problem, but I will (and recently have) refrain from unleashing it on undeserving users. Until someone can point out a serious instance where I have abused my sysop tools, there is no reason for me to comment further. Yes I'm still pissed off, and will probably remain so when it comes to this place and the people that "run" it... I am nothing but a janitor here now... and will probably stay that way forever. At this point I really don't care anymore. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 08:48, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Is Auron not an asshat? I mean, if there were a formal definition I'm sure he'd fit it. (I'm also sure Wyn would, as well as most of the members of this community.) 173.23.85.16
zzz Auron calls himself an asshat. @Armond, please stop being bad. Thanks! -Cursed Angel Q.Q 21:32, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
"Asshatery" is commenting on the contributions, not the contributor. Happy (late) Valentine's Day Tanaric! --67.240.83.137 03:43, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
Tan although I understand the point you're making, the way policy has been interpreted over the past few years, seems to allow you to criticize someones actions as Asshattery as long as you do not in fact call the user an Asshat. (I am aware this is a semantic argument as one is defined by their actions, thus calling someones actions idiotic is in effect calling the user an idiot, however that seems to be how the policy has been implemented and has been followed by most of the admin team.) I'm not saying I agree either way, just pointing out this fact, as this may have been a change from a couple of years ago and thus you may have missed it during your absence from the wiki. For a further example of this please see block summaries which state "general asshattery" as the reason, in effect calling the user an asshat but again taken not to fall under the remit of NPA. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 03:53, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Ok, the problem with the column widths is because they float based on the text you have in them. To make them all a standard size, you have to manually set the width size for each column in each table. It can be done, but is problematic for viewers using different resolutions. I don't have the problem because mine isn't broken into multiple tables like yours is. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 09:29, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

More template help *hides*

Hello again! Hate to bother you, but I've got one more small favor to ask. *hides* Another good friend has me helping her with her Wiki page, and the page is complete, except for the character boxes. Well, they're complete, but the way they're set up makes them extra long, causing more scrolling. Is there a way to place the titles and accomplishment sections in the center of the character box and leave the rest on the left with the picture on the right? The page is here. Thanks a lot! :) Tender Wolf 05:00, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

With that character box there will be a lot of scrolling. I had that exact design a while back and you can expand each box to fir the entire width of the page but your going to have to scroll to see everything anyway, thats why I changed to the way mine are setup now. User DrogoBoffin sig icon.png Drogo Boffin 05:26, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
Let Wyn handle it, bro. User Felix Omni Signature.pngelix Omni 06:18, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
If you want to widen the box to 3 columns, it can be done easily, but then you need to only have one per row. We try to optimize the pages to 1024x768 and having 2 characters side by side will case a sideways scroll at that resolution. I'd be happy to redo the character box that way, but it's still going to make for a long page with multiple characters. I would suggest widening the box, and give each character it's own page. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 07:29, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Wyn, sorry for bugging you but if you still mod on guildwarsguru you might want to tell them their site just tried to install spyware on my pc from one of their adverts. I won't be visiting a site of that kind of low standards again so I have no idea who to warn about it. If you don't work with them, just archive this. I imagine that's how people's accounts get hacked though. Ghosst I Make Dead PeopleTalk

GWGR uses Tribal fusion as one of there major ad networks. Which is known for randomly producing spyware and or virus ads. Just use adblock plus on Guru...It's clean--Dominator Matrix 00:31, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
Once again, Guru has little if any control on the adverts on their site. So calling them "low standard" is rather unfair, and is the kind of thing that starts all sorts of bullshit. We work very hard to keep our site clean, and free of security risks for our users. Even some of the most "high standard" sites on the internet have had security breaches. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 00:39, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

We do everything WE can to secure our site, and we address issues of malicious ads with the ad provider whenever they occur. I am not personally involved in most of that stuff though, I deal primarily with the auctions. There are plenty of ways that users can keep their computers safe however, and they have been outlined and outlined and outlined. The fact that people don't listen to sound advice is, again, not my problem. I was simply commenting that claiming that the largest Guild Wars fansite is "low standard" is just asking to start bullshit. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 01:26, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Im not sure if my asking is way too much... but asking alone isnt much so... here´s my question: I would like an alternate character template by making a recicled convination of your previous works. From your available offers I would like to keep using template 5a with these differences:

  • No Title and Honors space. So that the picture and "My Story" can use that area better. Plus an extra space which wont mess up, exclusive for user boxes.
  • The other half (right): With only Armor Sets, Armory, Favourite Builds and Minipets.
  • Change the current Hero section with your Hero Template 2, the one with images of each with current wearing armor.

That would be a customized version of my like from your offers.

Can I ask you that favor? Yoshida Keiji 11:54, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
