Featured article image issue

Just wondering if you can reduce the collapsing protection on the featured articles' images, as some of them such as File:Kurzick.jpg and File:Lore King Doric prostrate.jpg, among others, need editing (moving and category maintenance) and it's literally impossible to do such. Konig/talk 05:09, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

It's not possible to change the image protection level without removing the protection from the page itself, or without removing them from all images completely; and I guess we don't want that. Maybe you can explain what needs to be changed, and someone else will make the changes then. poke | talk 16:40, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
From what I know off the top of my head:
 • File:Crystal Desert loading screen.jpg is now a redundant duplicate of File:"Desert" concept art 2.jpg and should be redirected (or deleted and userpages which use the loading screen named image altered).
 • File:Lore King Doric prostrate.jpg needs to be moved to File:"King and Gods" concept art.jpg (for some reason Emmet removed the move tag today, which is fine since only admins can alter it, but concept art images should preserve official names when possible) and to accommodate the move have added.
 • File:Kurzick.jpg need to be moved to File:"Goth" concept art.jpg and have added to it.
 • File:Dhuum concept art.jpg needs to have added to it.
The other concept art images may have to be moved/altered in the future for consistency (for instance, the Dhuum one would be moved to its official title being in quotation marks if its found), but those I know of right now. Konig/talk 19:41, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
I uploaded a new version of File:KKNF05.jpg under its official name (new version is of better quality and size), so the former needs redirectiong/deletion with link altering. Konig/talk 22:58, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
Another one: File:KKNF02.jpg needs to be moved to File:"Margonites" concept art 1.jpg and needs a |Margonites added to the end of the current categories along with being added to the end. Konig/talk 00:50, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Image revision deletion?

Not sure where exactly to ask, so I thought here would be a good place to start. I was wondering if you could delete a previous version of an image I uploaded for someone's Texmod project. this is the image, and the older version has part of a name in the friend's list showing, which that person might not want public. Thanks in advanced :D ~FarloUser Farlo Triad.pngTalk 20:32, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Done. - Tanetris 21:03, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
Thanks a lot Tanetris! Can any of the sysops do this like normal pages or does it require higher power? ~FarloUser Farlo Triad.pngTalk 21:56, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
It requires being selected by ArenaNet of the Community Open House day. Only Tanetris and Poke have the power to delete image revisions. --Riddle 22:21, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
Any administrator can do this, so you could ask directly on the admin noticeboard next time if you need even faster reaction times ;) poke | talk 13:21, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Template help?

After Google and Wikipedia failing me, I figured I'd ask if you could help me out. I'm not sure if you've looked at the interactive map code we've been using, but I was wondering if there was a way to have a template call on a variable that's defined on that page under another template. For some context: the maps work off of an X and Y coordinate system, and the scale that's used to define how big the image is and to set the "boundaries" (for lack of a better word) on the labels.

Currently, the map image and base is set down by Template:Image label begin, which has it's scale defined in the map page as a variable. The labels themselves use Template:Image label, which has to have the scale defined again for every label. This can be annoying making sure that they're all the same for each image and it'd ensure no problems if they were automatically uniform, so basically, is there a way for the label template to call on the scale variable under the "begin" template link on the map page? ~FarloUser Farlo Triad.pngTalk 02:22, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

I would suggest using the variables extension. In your 'Image label begin', I would use {{#vardefine:scale|{} }} (width is your scale, right?) and in the other template use where you had the parameter before. --JonTheMon 12:29, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Yup, that's the usual way we carry over some data from one to another template :) poke | talk 19:21, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Sorry I'm not that well versed in the wiki language, but does that code have to go anywhere in particular, and if so, could one of you add it in? >.< I think I'd break things about 50 times before I got it right. ~FarloUser Farlo Triad.pngTalk 20:31, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Basically you use the #vardefine one to save a value into a variable, and then afterwards you can use the #var one to load that value again. So you need to use it wherever you need it. poke | talk 21:03, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
"So you need to use it wherever you need it." Huh? Does that mean I'd have to add another call into every label, because if so, then there's no point. Is there no way to have the label template automatically call on the variable set under the "begin" template to make them all uniform? Maybe I'm misunderstanding something or I'm more tired than I think I am. ~FarloUser Farlo Triad.pngTalk 21:08, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Poke!

I got a technical question, so instead of sleeping on it like might be smart, I decided to bug you.

Is it possible to modify my personal settings/monobook.css/something to add a button above the editing box to insert to the edit box? Is there a limit to the number such buttons I can add? (Specifically, I want one for red text [#ff0000], one for purple text [probably #cc00cc], one for green text [probably #006633], one for blue text [#0000ff], one for light blue text [#00ccff], and one for gold text [I honestly have no clue what color this would be, maybe #ffff00]).

Finally, is there a smarter way to do this that I'm not aware of?

Thanks,

-- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png 06:22, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

You can do this with WikEd (although I dunno if that's smarter or just different, but you might like the WYSIWYG without any addons) — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 07:22, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Actually there is a built-in way to add new buttons to the default editor. You basically need to call a function in your monobook.js that adds a new button definition to an internal list; that list is used to construct the buttons later.
For example for red text you could easily add the following call (you will probably change the image though):
addButton( '/skins/common/images/button_bold.png', 'Red text', '<span style="color: red;">', '</span>', 'red text', 'mw-editbutton-color-red' );
In general the syntax is like this:
addButton( '/path/to/icon.png', 'Button description (hover text)', 'opening code (i.e. start tag)', 'closing code (i.e. close tag)', 'inline text (when no text is selected, this is used in between)', 'mw-editbutton-some-unique-id' );
Hope that helps! :) poke | talk 19:20, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Very much so, thanks!
I'm guessing that since the line starts with >addButton, this is simply a function call (or something similar) that I can repeat as needed by repeating it on a new line of my monobook.js (assuming I respect the unique IDs required)? -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png 21:37, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
So </span> instead of </color> (in poke's code :P)–User Balistic B d-dark.pngalistic 21:40, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Huh, why didn't I get any notification about this? Weird. Anyway, no, the leading > was not intended, but yeah, it's just a function call, so you should be able to place it just like that in your monobook and it should work (I think). And yeah, the </color> was a mistake too.. Everything's fixed above :P poke | talk 19:06, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Texmod Author

Hey again, I was wondering if you had heard anything new from the original Texmod author about his thoughts of re-doing it? Also, unless you want to, could you give me his email or whatever contact information you had so I could ask him? Thanks. ~FarloUser Farlo Triad.pngTalk 18:59, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Didn't hear anything new about it; guess he is just like everybody to busy with other stuff. All I know is that he wants to do it, and started working on it a while ago.. poke | talk 19:03, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, probably. Could you dig up his email for me so I can bug him again? haha. ~FarloUser Farlo Triad.pngTalk 19:31, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
I'm gonna muscle into this conversation that has nothing to do with me and mention that I think a second crack at him by Farlo sounds like a good idea. Kairu 17:43, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Or maybe Poke could give it a second chance? I just think a year going by might have changed the original authors mind. Kairu 14:41, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
If you want to contact RS, his email is written in the readme file in the original package. I personally don't have much interest in bugging him myself right now, especially as I can understand just fine how easily certain projects are pushed away. poke | talk 16:03, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

A couple days late

But it's time to change the featured article (well, last Monday was). Due to lack of new acceptances, and to keep Thorn to Halloween, I'm putting Charr up for re-featuring.
On a semi-related note, Would it be reasonable to remove the collapsing protection on Main Page/featured article and instead have it on Main Page, that way only the currently featured article's image would be protected and the others will no longer need an admin to create changes (be it better image, move, or whatever). Or, alternatively, would it be reasonable to move the "previous featured" onto the /next article so that all can be edited at once when reasonable? Lastly, setting up a discussion for the order of previously featured articles since the discussion on nominations is pretty much dead now. Konig/talk 07:19, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

I plan to rework the the whole list anyway somewhere within the next days, so that will probably fix your problems with it as well. I'm going to refeature Charr for now. poke | talk 17:25, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

skill data

how hard would it be to make it so e.g. showed the heal party skill icon and current concise description? if it's just something that needs a lot of work across all the skill pages that's maybe something I could statr on 24.130.140.36 17:45, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply, totally forget about this section. I don't think doing it via the skill pages would be feasible, especially when you want to subst it. It would require changing the skill infobox a lot, and then we would still need to adjust every single skill page to some extend.
A better option would be to query the data via DPL and prepare it in some way so that you can easily use it, although I'm not sure if this would work well with substing (substing usually copies over a lot markup that is actually unneeded for rendering the content); but you can always try it. poke | talk 14:41, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

High-res Map Images

Stephane said you had them. Could you upload them? :D ~FarloUser Farlo Triad.pngTalk 03:24, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Uhm, sure, I just need to figure out in what way it would be the best. Do you have any preference, because uploading them all the way they are won't really work - so I would split them up into sections/areas/locations/whatever. poke | talk 17:07, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
Not to be a dick, but thank god someone who's a little more active has the image(s)s as well :P. Is there any chance you could email me the original so I could see the sizes as well, it sucks going back and forth just from you re-uploading different tries, haha.
Anyways, I was just giving 2000px as a rough number in width, so we'll always have something really good quality, but I can see that becoming a bit massive, especially in longer (vertically) areas. And that estimate was more aimed at Stephane, who could (I assume) just render it at whatever scale he wanted. Just from your 8000px image, cutting it into basically the same region sizes we have now (All explorable areas plus a little border) is already a massive improvement over the screenshots I used. If the map has enough detail to make any other useful maps, that'd be great, but if it can't reasonably go down to explorable zone scale, then there's not much use for it except the regions, at least for the maps currently planned. Also, JPG is fine, absolute quality isn't a big deal, as long as it can stretch to any decent sized monitor and not look too terrible. ~FarloUser Farlo Triad.pngTalk 04:26, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
Well, I don’t consider myself active these days, but I guess I have a bit more time for such things than Stephane :P From how I understood it, this is the best resolution that is available, so Stephane couldn’t “render it at whatever scale he wanted”. After all it’s not a render, but simply the world map in probably the highest available quality. So compared to screenshots we take from in-game we probably don’t get a resolution benefit (I actually didn’t compare the zoom level yet, but I think it’s the same), but rather just an overall quality improvement; but that should be reason enough to update the graphics.
I could probably go through the region maps we already have and replace them, i.e. crop the map exactly at the same position as the images we have. This could however introduce small pixel shifts (due to in-game screenshot compression and alignment), but should be precise enough to not break any positions on it.
For actual locations, I don’t think we can expect anything more detailed from ArenaNet. If you want anything along this detail level, it will require a lot of work… poke | talk 22:09, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Haha, I got a kick out of seeing the tags added. Anyways, re-doing the region maps would be amazingly nice. I can always go through and make sure everything's still aligned properly. That image Smurf has is actually pretty close to what I was hoping for, haha. I was kind of hoping they'd have something similar to that level of detail, but perhaps they didn't bother. I guess I get to bug Smurf about how he was able to make the images he did now :P ~FarloUser Farlo Triad.pngTalk 04:24, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
Look at his talk page (& archives), he explained it already quite well there. It's a quite complicated process though.. poke | talk 13:57, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

The time has come, once more. (last week I think actually) Konig/talk 18:20, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Bleh; and yes, I already have an idea for automization, but still trying to find the time to implement it... :/ poke | talk 18:29, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
Would it be possible to create another user rights group that would somehow enable Konig (and Zesbeer) permission to update the featured article? They have both proven themselves to be responsible editors and shouldn't need to undergo a full RfA. (GuildWiki has a rollback group that allows the b'crats to anoint people with the ability to move certain types of articles and rollback vandals.) – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:58, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
It works for rollback, because there is a custom right for accessing the rollback feature; but editing protected pages is a single right too (for all pages), so it does not work selective for just some pages. But hopefully I can implement my plan though which should make it redundant anyway.. poke | talk 09:17, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Hilariously annoying

Attempted to edit Anything You Can Do's dialogue to change «player» into <Character name> - yet I'm told that the edit is harmful! Why? Because of a word in the initial dialogue... Question!

Is there any way to make the Special:WantedPages (and like-minded pages) namespace specific in where it gets the redlinks from (and not the pages the redlinks are for)? I want to reduce the number of wanted pages, but so many of them that I find are from talk and user pages. >.< Konig/talk 22:05, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Many people before you tried that, but no, it’s not really possible. The only way to prevent pages from appearing on wanted pages is to not make the link. Therefore if you are linking something of which you know it is non-existent (and you know it’s supposed to stay like that), or if you request a page deletion for example, link that page with sl.
Nevertheless I’m generally against going through all pages and removing red links just for the sake of cleaning up the wanted pages. Yes, that special page is there for a reason, but that reason becomes less interesting as more complete a wiki gets. By now, it’s easier to figure out that a page is missing/wanted, simply by seeing a link on an actual article. poke | talk 09:12, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
Fair point, however, with so many articles it becomes hard to tell if a red link is really needing its own article (e.g., An Empire Divided has a lot of red links, but these links are the only places where such is mentioned and it's only mentioned in name and name alone).
On another topic, but shared topic title: Can you edit ArenaNet:In-game talk and add The Scribe| to the link to the Monestary Scribe (the pages were merged and the second deleted a while back). I am unable to edit the page. Konig/talk 18:56, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

(For example, this is one area that I have little interest in as a contributor, but I'm glad that Z has taken the time to make it happen for H'ween and to try to automate/simplify the process for the future.) – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 00:24, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
that is what i mean tef, it also reflects on the the wiki community and how much we care about this game and the events that are taking place in it. and there is discussion going on the gw2 wiki looking to make over the theme for Halloween there as well.-User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 01:22, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

And yes, I know many of the speedy deletions are my fault, but still! Shouldn't take over half a month to delete speedy tags. Konig/talk 18:26, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
Thank you and Tanetris for reducing the list. One thing though: you removed the "List of <creature type> bosses" pages because they were not "speedy criteria," however wouldn't deleting a page after merging the content into another be considered "G4: Housekeeping. Non-controversial deletions needed because of planned and previously discussed maintenance."? Konig/talk 21:12, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
Was that discussed? I don't think so. G4 is in general a very bad speedy deletion reason. poke | talk 21:13, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
And was just going to edit that it's the same thing as the various "Jade Brotherhood (<profession>)" articles were deleted. That is, "redundant or otherwise unneeded: merged with Jade Brotherhood Member" - just replace "Jade Brotherhood Member" with "List of other species bosses." And yes, it was discussed.... let me find it... Talk:List of rat bosses was the main place of that discussion. Konig/talk 21:15, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
The Jade Brotherhood Member articles went through the normal deletion process, which is the appropriate way for such cases. poke | talk 21:17, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
Well I'd just like to say that it's outright silly that a page who's entire content is elsewhere (as discussed it should) and thus becomes redundant has to wait three days (especially when it had the speedy tag up for more than three days :p). Konig/talk 21:21, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Thorn's been up for a week longer than necessary, just sayin. In another topic requiring someone with more wiki-fying powers than I'm allowed, File:The Rise of the White Mantle loading screen.jpg needs to be given the following code:
concept art
screenshot

Likewise, File:"Goth" concept art.jpg needs the following code:
concept art

And lastly, File:Pre-Searing Ascalon loading screen.jpg needs:
concept art
screenshot

This is in replacement of what's there, to be clear. Please and thank you. (How I wish I could edit these things ~_~ not like I'd become a vandal... right?) Konig/talk 06:07, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
Done that, will update the featured article tomorrow; note that ArenaNet image and screenshot are usually mutually exclusive. On the ArenaNet image - I thought it was, but not so for the |concept art tag. I'm unfamiliar with the template so I just left both there...
On the feature mechanism - should I create a sub-page (in the project space probably) for replacement text, since a lot of the articles were updated since their first/previous feature? Konig/talk 20:35, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
Just prepare the featured article/next page until the new system is active, and everything will be fine :P poke | talk 21:05, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

(Reset indent) File:"King and Gods" concept art.jpg requires the code changed to:

concept art

I wish there was a way to have just the image on the Main Page set to protect, rather than all images on Main Page/featured article. Would make things easier. Konig/talk 23:05, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

My new solution will take that into account ;) poke | talk 06:48, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Well luckily that change would be the last thing to change that I can't, I believe. Also sorry, it appears I single-handedly added almost 200 speedy deletion candidates (definably over when including normal deletions). o.o Konig/talk 07:07, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Don't worry, I'll work those off in my next boring lecture… Although that could be difficult given that I don't have a mouse with me; but well, I'll try ^^ poke | talk 07:15, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Regarding File:Xun Rao.jpg. It is as different from File:"Canthan Zealot" concept art.jpg as File:Jaw Smokeskin.jpg is from File:Bonfaaz Burntfur.jpg (same subject, but different places/levels of quality). They both depiect the same, unchanged (outside a little lighting) concept art - one is stylized by the artist (the latter), the other is stylized for the website and is of lesser quality (the former; lesser quality because of the bottom half becomes hard to see due to said lighting). They are very much the same image, just of different quality. The former ("Xun Rao") would likely be replaced if we see him in game and he holds a unique model (unlikely imo, unless he has no mask). Point being, it's like opting to keep a terrible quality NPC image while a better quality image is available, but for a different NPC with the same model. Especially since no pags link to Xun Rao.jpg. Konig/talk 02:30, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
Point is that that image is different; it may be based on the concept art, but it is completely different stylized. It's not a terrible quality, but I rather think it's an awesome picture. Because of that I would like to keep it on the wiki, hence the not orphaned tag, and it also landed on my watchlist. poke | talk 10:13, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
It seems I must apologize again. And an early reminder: Next Monday, new feature. Konig/talk 22:41, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
And on a related note, any idea where this should be moved to? I recall there was a page somewhere talking about adding string functions to wiki, but not the name of the page.. perhaps somewhere like that? File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.pngChieftain Alex 22:56, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
No problem Konig, but I doubt I'll be able to do those this weekend. I'm in the final phases of my bachelor thesis, so I have nearly no time at all.. But as soon as that's over, I'll get those done.
Alex: I guess that's already answered, right? ;) poke | talk 19:45, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

New section for a new reminder

Featured article needs alteration. ._. To anyone with the power to see this message. Konig/talk 01:47, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

argh, done. I didn’t have the time to do it earlier (actually I didn't have it right now either). poke | talk 09:10, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Needing your assistance again

File:Salvation.jpg's code must be replaced with:

concept art

If/when a different naming system is chosen for the BMP page images (so they either match the mission book page images or concept art images in naming style), it'll need a move + other alteration though... unless that automatic featuring system gets established. @.@ Konig/talk 05:28, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

done. I have some time starting this week, so I’m currently working off things off my task list ^^ As such the featuring system will appear in a while. poke | talk 08:27, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
