Hi!
Could you please post a list of wikichu irc commands pretty please? Thanks bunches. ♥ is for Raine, etc. 09:31, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- Actually there are not many, except wiki link expansion and URL check: !tpl <templatecode>, !build <templatecode>, !g

Finding where a specific template parameter is used?
I know that DPL can find pages that use a specific template, IIRC the 'uses' parameter does that. However, what will generate a list of pages where the template is used and a particular one of its PARAMETERS is non-blank? --Max 2 06:43, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- Just drop the results into a sortable table. Bam! done. --JonTheMon 12:20, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- So DPL, by itself, can't do the job. but can be used to build a tool that can do it. A bit indirect and it will display a bunch of extraneous information in the process, but doable. Useful technique.. Mildly complex to implement. Would making a template to do it be worth while? --Max 2 14:01, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- DPL itself is a bit too complex to make it possible to encapsulate it in a template without restricting it too much. It might work for things like skill tables (as those have quite fixed layout, and are following a basic idea), but I disadvise to do it for everything else. Also just checking a template for its parameter usage is not as complex as it sounds. The only disadvantage in using DPL for it is that only 500 pages can be checked. This means that if there are 1000 pages where every 2nd has the parameter in question set, only 250 can be displayed (because the parameter check is performed after the selection gets the first 500 pages).
- However this is not really an issue in most cases. Either the template is not used that much at all, or you can split the list into multiple subsections by using already available categories. That way you would add selection criterias that apply before the 500 page limit (or you could even limit the selection alphabetically by only selection A-M and N-Z etc).
- Anyway, with your recent wish to check the Standard prerequisites template for the parameters, you could easily do it like this:
- So DPL, by itself, can't do the job. but can be used to build a tool that can do it. A bit indirect and it will display a bunch of extraneous information in the process, but doable. Useful technique.. Mildly complex to implement. Would making a template to do it be worth while? --Max 2 14:01, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
{{ #dpl: format = ,,, | secseparators = ²{#if:,¦¶*[[%PAGE%]]}² | uses = Template:Standard prerequisites | include = {Standard prerequisites}:locked }}
- This will get all pages that use the template and check if the paramter locked is used. Only matching pages are then listed.
- You could then also incoperate multiple template parameters into a table to show some kind of check list with all parameters next to each others. If you need help with that, please tell me and I can give you an example. poke | talk 18:29, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Skill infobox
Do you remember an old project you had with Anja to consoldate some paameters into an 'availability' fieled. Or something like that, Detail escape me. What happened to that? I've been sort of missing it lately. Backsword 19:28, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
- Uhm, I don't remember an availability parameter.. The only thing Anja and I were doing was thinking about a complete skill and effect structure to put everything together in a completely new structure. It's possible that we wanted to change something on availability with that step, but I don't really remember anything like that, sorry. poke | talk 19:43, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, the availability would cover what special does now and more, so that's it. Do you still have any of the sandbox stuff? Backsword 19:57, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

The draft infobox of that state also has some implementation of that parameter, but I don't really remember how complete that state was. But maybe it's a help for you :) poke | talk 20:07, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Could you weigh in on the changes that are being proposed? For the DPL related section, I think they are trying to make this display box into an infobox (that it contains comprehensive information that is redundant to the quest infobox). - btw, if at all possible, i would like to preserve the internal link side of them, and/or change the color from the external light blue to the internal blue, look @ them as light blue & is difficult to read on gray. Also, would it be possible to have the page background as black? cuz i looked @ it as black and section headers weren't visible ;( --The Scythe Has Fallen Ω|Ω talk Ω|Ω 00:29, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- I fixed it for you. In general to link to non wiki pages, you have to specify a full url to the page. In case of wiki related actions, you can use
{{fullurl:pagename|parameters}}
to automatically generate the correct url. In your case{{fullurl:User talk:The Scythe Has Fallen|action=edit}}
creates a link to your page with theaction=edit
parameter. When I changed the links first, it was really hard to see them on the dark background, so I added something else.class="hiddenlinks"
in the surrounding div prevents the links inside from changing their text colors to blue, so you can simply change the colors the way you want (the other option would be to surround the link text with span elements). Note however that you shouldn't do that for bigger blocks, as there is a good reasoning behind all links using the same color, so you shouldn't do that for all of the talk page content. Instead, you should rather tune the background color a bit, so it's more readable. - Oh, and you can also add the class "plainlinks" to the div, if you want that external link icon to disappear. poke | talk 07:57, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

- I fixed it for you. In general to link to non wiki pages, you have to specify a full url to the page. In case of wiki related actions, you can use

- Due to the Eavil attacks, the username limit was recently lowered to 32 characters. Accounts created before still exist though, iirc. Shadow Runner 10:07, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- 32 possible base-10 numerical characters only results in 100 nonillion possible usernames (that is, 1 followed by 33 zeroes). Assuming an attack every 1 second continuously and one attack per account, it would take... approximately 3.1 septillion years to exhaust them all, itself equal to more than 225 trillion times the estimated age of the universe since the Big Bang, 13.7 billion years. Adjusting the bot to include an additional 52 alphabetical characters, counting capitals, would considerably increase the base duration by changing the beginning from base-10 to base-62, which produces a number so large that expressing it in any way other than 62^32 would be exhausting. In any case, I think we can fairly assume the attacks will not cease due to a username limit.–Jette 10:20, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

- Actually, the username is limited to 32 bytes. That makes a theoretical number of ~116 duodecilliard (=116 with 75 zeros) possibilities.. Of course it is a bit less as some characters are either not visible or directly disallowed by the wiki. poke | talk 16:03, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

- Due to the Eavil attacks, the username limit was recently lowered to 32 characters. Accounts created before still exist though, iirc. Shadow Runner 10:07, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Ok, how long will it take the bot to burn through around 325409380874538449882369153677695 (true number) users? --Neil2250 09:37, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Im asking whats the maximum you can have... and how many users there were on the wiki until those ad'bots attacked... i need to run some mathmatical thoughts through my head. --Neil2250 09:24, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- How many do you need?[1]--Sharkinu 09:20, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- gg on the rest though. im waiting until they burn through every letter number combonation in the wiki :D, Also, one question, how many letters(or numbers) are you aloud in your username?--Neil2250 08:55, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's a bit annoying.. :/ poke | talk 23:47, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
- This would be a non-issue, except the reCaptcha request had been put on the back burner to be "discussed". Poke has blocked all immediate url spams from occurring. There will be a few extras to attend too. The automated user creation is just an unadvoidable annoyance at this point in time. — Gares 23:04, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

- No Auron, we cannot free any username. Usermerge has the ability, but we can't use it here. So once taken, a username is reserved forever. poke | talk 09:46, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
- Why can't you use it here? — Raine Valen 17:30, 27 Jul 2010 (UTC)
- That's a good question. User merge should only affect the wiki that it is used on, unless GW2Wiki and GWWiki are tied and it would cause problems. There is a maintenance script, removeUnusedAccounts.php, that will remove user names that have not posted any contributions at all, but it's not selective iirc. It removes all user names that satisfy the conditions and it wouldn't be feasible in the first place. — Gares 17:55, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- They are. That's why if you register on one wiki you don't have to register on the other. ~ PheNaxKian talk 18:05, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- Why would merging and subsequently removing (via the maintenance script) the bot accounts on both wikis be a bad thing? — Raine Valen 18:14, 27 Jul 2010 (UTC)
- As Gares said, that isn't selective - you'd be getting rid of more than just the bots. As to why UserMerge can't be used to delete accounts, see User talk:Poke/archive#User Merge. Anyway, I also don't think there's a need to remove the bot accounts. -- pling 18:25, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, PheNaxKian, that was supposed to read, "unless "GW2Wiki and GWWiki are tied"
and&& "it would cause problems."" I still had a brain fart in public regarding it though. - It's a lot more simple to just use a non-reserved name just like it is in games, forums, and other wikis, considering the number of "real looking" bot names are rare. — Gares 19:00, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

- The server Wikichu is running on is sometimes rebooted so the running process is closed (well, I at least believe that it is a reboot, but it also might be some mechanism to stop long running processes after some time). At least I usually restart it by hand. Given that I'm currently not coming into IRC myself, I simply didn't notice. I'll restart it later (if I remember). poke | talk 22:38, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

If I remember correctly, somebody bitched to Cursed Angel for having a Pokemon in binary? I don't remember very well but however, User:Nalana_Darkling/Piplup →[ »Halogod (talk)« ]← 17:54, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- I regret to inform you that that is not binary. Piplup in binary would be 010100000110100101110000011011000111010101110000. elix Omni 19:58, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

- It's rather both.. because ASCII is a subset of Unicode in the UTF8 charset.. Also Felix, that binary string totally depends on encoding. This is a Piplup too:

Dear poke, after splitting Nicholas Research archve now "Previous appearance" is broken. Could you pleases fix it or shall we undo splitting? Pino 13:17, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- I have fixed the statistics but won't do anything about the previous appearance on the archive page. The whole system will be replaced within the next two weeks to make that redundant. poke | talk 16:10, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
- thank you for the nice and quick response Pino 09:07, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Categories
I was wondering if Wikichu was omniscient to the point of seeing which categories are added by infoboxes, such as Prophecies + Collector adding Category:Prophecies collectors to an NPC's page. If so, could it also search the page for repeated categories which have been hard-coded, and remove them? G R E E N E R 09:40, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
- It's not omniscient, but it definitely knows how to find that out. I'll see what I can do. poke | talk 21:37, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

- Quick question as per this: Would it be possible to have a set auto-cycle for the featured articles? I would think it is possible, but no where near certain, hence why I'm asking. -- Konig/talk 22:03, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- It would be possible, but you'd still need to set the page to be featured manually since they're being nominated rather than selected randomly or something. –Jette 22:12, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- Actually, it's starting to look like we won't get many more new features, so it'll be selected randomly/in order of a section of articles (those which have been accepted), with few - if any - additions once we get a few more (I'm hoping to get 9 more accepted articles, at least, so we have a flat 52 articles - one per week for an entire year before restarting). If new articles are found, nominated, and accepted the code can simply be altered to feature that article next (while keeping the holiday articles in place?). Or so is my hope. -- Konig/talk 22:53, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
