A remnant of an old move - not sure what to do

I've recently noticed that these two talk pages were not moved/merged when their respective main pages were merged into Languages of Tyria (yes, I know that I was the one who moved their info and made them redirects, guess I overlooked the talk pages). Dunno if they should simply be moved and the talk pages deleted, or if the move to/from template for talk should be used or what. -- Konig/talk 00:05, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Merging pages is always a bit complicated, but in this case I guess using the move template and afterwards just changing those talk pages to redirects (without deleting them!) would be fine. poke | talk 06:48, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Yup. Must be all the GW2 commotion. It hardly felt like 2 weeks from Aug 22 when someone brought up the two weeks thing in regards to the HoM info being "soon." -- Konig/talk 08:00, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Sorry to bother you once more....

May more times in the near future. This article's proposition for a move has been unrefuted for over a month, and a reason for having "(work)" in the title hasn't been brought up in over half of a year. Would you please delete the current redirect and move the article?
Also, these three articles have not only gone stale, but have been tagged for a while with no real opposition (the second had one argument but the point of the argument could be solved via a disambig tag, so that one may not be able to be moved yet). Oh, and there's also this category. Just tired of seeing so many bloody tags. -- Konig/talk 23:21, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Resolved #1, #2 and #4. About #3 you might want to create the disambiguation first or then simply move it yourself; and about the category, pages won't be moved to another category when you move the category, so those pages need to be added to a different category first (and then the old category can go via speedy C1). poke | talk 07:13, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

UTC time

at top right corner. Is there a way to get it work on other wikies too? I've tried copy-pasta from MediaWiki:Monobook.js to another wiki (Well Wikia, duh. Both based on MediaWiki with minor differences), with no results. Juze User Juze JuzeAvatar.jpg 11:10, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

Note that the license on GWW is incompatible with Wikia, so you need the author's permission (in this case mine) to copy over things. I'm willing to give you that permission, if you just tell me, which Wikia wiki you want to use it on.
Also note that nearly all Wikia wikis use a different skin, Monaco, and the code for the UTC clock was made for Monobook (hence the name of that page). So if you put it on Monobook.js it won't be loaded at all when you use Monaco and copying it over to Monaco might bring up incompatibilities. poke | talk 16:43, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

I had exactly that problem in the past and the reason it happens is the firewall that is protecting the server. It is looking for potentially harmful content that is sent to the server and blocks it when it detects some unallowed characters. Sadly this sometimes conflicts with MediaWiki's own functions.
I suggest you to send a support ticket about this with exactly the time it happened and with the IP address you had at that time. That way, they can check what caused the error and fix it. I'll also try to investigate about this, so we can get it fixed on both wikis soon. poke | talk 12:26, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) On a different manner, Poke, do you think you can make the image on the main page bigger? There's text underneath the image (which looks bad for a single word imo) which wasn't like that when it was in the preview. -- Konig/talk 02:28, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

That completely depends on your resolution. The preview was using a table, which looks really ugly on smaller resolutions. This one looks fine enough. poke | talk 07:29, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

A Question of Formatting.

Hi there, I've been pointed to ask you if links at the top of collapsible tables can be coloured - i.e. the [Show] [Hide] tags. This can be done on wikipedia but Wyn says that the coding is different here. I'm wondering if it is possible to do, if not no worries. ( The table in question is at : Faction_farm#Fast_faction_farming ). Thanks --File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.pngChieftain Alex 23:23, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

The only thing you can do is adding the hiddenlinks class to the table's header cell. That way the link will be in the same color as the text within that cell. poke | talk 07:00, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
(bearing in mind most of the tables I use are either really simple or are cut and pasted...) I don't know if that works with collapsible table styles. e.g.
1. with class="collapsible; hiddenlinks" for all of the headers..yields an ordinary table
2. With hiddenlinks in just the top class box. (makes no collapsible handles)
I'm reaching the conclusion that the tables don't allow collapsible panes and hidden links. --File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.pngChieftain Alex 08:16, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
My suggestion would be you choose less bold background colors. Especially given that the general Color scheme for this wiki is toward more muted colors, I think using the dark blue and bright red a bit out of keeping. This would allow the standard link color to remain visible on collapsible tables. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 11:00, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
that would be giving in. --File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.pngChieftain Alex 14:20, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
Meh, you didn't have to put all those things on my talk page <_<
First, you don't separate class names with ;, but simply a space. Second, you simply have to put the class name in that table cell, where the show/hide link later appears. So for your table, simply add it to the header cells:
! colspan="2" class="hiddenlinks" | Kurzick Faction Methods
...
! colspan="2" class="hiddenlinks" | Luxon Faction Methods
That's all you need to do. poke | talk 21:05, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
I can totally see why Wyn directed me to you. thanks very much :) --File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.pngChieftain Alex 23:02, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Sprechen sie deutsch

Hello, I've been trying to find some Guild Wars voice actors of non-English languages and I found a bit about Guild Wars on w:Sascha_Draeger's German wikipedia page. The Google translation is a bit murky, does "Er synchronisierte außerdem in allen Teilen des Online-Rollenspiels Guild Wars die vom Spieler erstellten, männlichen Charaktere in den Missionsvideosequenzen sowie im Nachfolger Guild Wars 2 einen der Hauptcharaktere, "Logan"." say that he is the male voice of the player character and Logan (Thackery)? Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 05:07, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Yes, exactly. I'm quite surprised about the Logan-part though; so the synchronization is that far progressed already? poke | talk 08:14, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
Well, they had german and french versions of the second trailer when it came out. So they most likely went ahead of themselves to get VAs for the trailers alone, rather than for the entire game. Then again, they could be doing localization as they write the scripts, so that they don't have to modify the spoken bit to fit the timespan of cinematics. -- Konig/talk 08:19, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

A question regarding user merges

So a long time ago I had my userpage moved from User:Azazel The Assassin to what it is now, but I hadn't known of the user merge and I was directed to merely move and redirect things, signifying it is the same person using the two accounts. I've noticed that the user merge allows the contributions to be merged and I recently found through the user list that an account I created a long time ago and never made an edit on (due to having forgotten the password - which I just rediscovered) is still around. So I'm wondering: Would it be reasonable to request a user-merge so long after changing userpages and would it be worth it to have it for an account with 0 contributions (or would it be better to just delete that account?). -- Konig/talk 07:57, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Deleting accounts is not possible. The only thing we are able to do is moving all contributions of one account to another account. So for an account with zero (or just a small number of really uninteresting edits, like just creating a redirect as the user page) it makes no sense to even think about merging, simply because there is nothing (or just unimportant stuff) to merge. For your old account it would be okay to move the contributions though to have them all in one place. poke | talk 14:12, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Recreating TexMod

I'm just curious if the original dev of Texmod ever got past the "thinking about it" stage for either going open source or continuing work, that you know of? All info died off months ago. No worries if you don't know though. Kairu 11:11, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Sorry I didn't answer earlier, or in the project group (I actually planned to do that but forgot later). I currently consider the project as dead. One of the reasons I see it like that is that there was never enough participation from others who really knew what to do. While I started the project and was willing to help as much as I can, I simply have not enough skill about DirectX or the WinAPI (and especially not enough time to invest to learn that for such a project) to be the main author. From the comments on the wiki, I initially hoped that there would be enough people who would know such things instead and could really make the project progress. However that didn't happen. But if anybody thinks he can actually do something about it, then I'll gladly give access to the Google Code project so he can commit to it (this is what I wanted to from the beginning).
The actual main reason why I consider the project dead is that I previously had contact with the original autor of TexMod. He told me that he was working on a new version, and currently won't make it open source. While I don't think we will actually see that new version too soon, I wouldn't want to work against him by working on an open source project trying to do the same. After all he knows a lot more of what he needs to do, to make it work as it does, and me/us even trying to achieve something similar would probably be a waste of effort. And I would really rather help him, as trying to get it done myself (which however both doesn't work right now).
I know that the actual idea of creating an open source TexMod was really cool and promising, but in the end a project won't progres if there isn't enough interest (and knowledge). And as I have said, I definitely won't be able to do it alone. poke | talk 09:37, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
That makes sense. I personally have only a vague idea of what needs to be done. I'm assuming it would need to be written in C++ or C#, which I could handle. But I took a look around for examples of hooking a DirectX program and the few that I found don't work. To be honest, if I could see a working example I would understand it and be able to work with it, but it seems thats the case for most people. No one seems to actually know definitively how it was created in the beginning. I know we all have ideas on how it was done, but I'm curious if anyone has anything that hooks into DirectX at all. From that I am sure I could dedicate a few days only to working on it. --Kairu 17:01, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
DirectX usually works by magic. Unless you know for sure you can get a working equivalent on your own, I'd suggest letting the person who knows more about it handle it and hope that he/she eventually releases it under a copyleft or something. –Jette 17:13, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Doh.

Missed yesterday as feature update day. It's gonna be so relaxing when we get it going in a cycle! -- Konig/talk 02:14, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Done.. Is it just me or is the time between those days is feeling shorter and shorter? Oh, btw. that reminds me that I should think of a nice solution to archive the featured article listing (preferably already in a format which makes the cycling easy). poke | talk 09:09, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Might be just me, but I don't think archiving would be necessary. However, it would be a good idea to update text... and I'll need to start up a discussion on the project talk page about syncing text between feature note and the article (whether it's necessary, etc.), cuz it would get awfully annoying to have to alter that page every so often for minor text syncing. -- Konig/talk 09:18, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
I think as long as there is nothing wrong in the summaries, they don't need to be synced.. Because that would really be annoying.. poke | talk 09:42, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Template: Landmark list and the reference tag.

Through extensive testing via edit previews, I have narrowed down the issue of the conflict with the two items in the section title that's currently only an issue here. Here's some notes that I figured out:

  • The reference tag (<ref>) must be above the template.
  • The references tag (<references/>) must be below the template.
  • It's the Template:Extension DPL that's getting in the way, not the landmark list template - the list template utilizes the extension dpl, which causes the error on the Tarnished Coast page.

Now, due to being a wiki nub and not being an admin, I have no clue how to fix the issue, nor do I know how to continue testing to find the sole issue. Nor can I fix it if I were to even find it. So I figured I'd let you know and see what you can do. -- Konig/talk 07:46, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, the problem with DPL and references is known, we noticed that on GW2W a while ago. There isn't any solution to fix that though, except the simple “don’t use both on a single page”. All we can do is to wait for a fix, although that might take very long.. As we depend much more on DPL than we (really) need references, I would say put the references away, or replace them with something else. The template pair {{note}} and {{note link}} I created a while ago might offer an acceptable replacement, although that's of course not as perfect as the wiki extension (and wasn't meant for references to begin with, as the extension was coming at that time).
Oh and regarding the order of ref and references, that's obvious, because references prints out all refs that were previously set and resets the display. Theoretically, you could use multiple references tags on a single page. poke | talk 09:17, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Dunno how I missed this in my watchlist before, but thanks for the response. I'll rework the Tarnished Coast page so that it doesn't look out of place compared to other reference listings, if possible, and hopefully we won't be needing references on other pages.
As to the order, I know of the theoretical (and possible) multiple references tag on a single page (found this out while testing the issue of the landmark list page) - I was merely mentioning that it's only an issue when the DPL is between the ref tag and the references tag. If it isn't, then there's no issue.
BTW, would it be possible to alter {{landmark list}} to not use dpl? Or is it mandatory? -- Konig/talk 07:48, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
Or a second thought: Would it be possible to replicate the reference tags' look via a template, and have said template used whenever the tag won't for xyz reason? -- Konig/talk 07:53, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
As said above, it is a problem with DPL and the references extension, yes. Actually the references tag itself works fine in such a situation, but the usage of DPL clears all previously set references, so in the end, the references tag doesn't see any previously made references (as DPL reset the list) and simply shows nothing. There is no fix for that and I doubt there will be in the near future.
I think the landmark list really needs DPL. You *could* make those lists static, but I think that is more work than doing the references manually. And for that, you can use those two templates. It's not possible to make the references list (or here: the note links) appear automatically, but you can always construct a similar appearance yourself. poke | talk 15:51, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Talk page remnants from merges

Talk:The Fury (Dragon Festival 2006) needs to be merged with Talk:The Fury and Talk:Benton (post-Searing) needs to be merged with Talk:Benton. Don't recall how talk pages are to be merged, if they should. (Why is it that merges, splits, and moves take so bloody long to do after discussion on them ended - if there even was one, for that matter).

Also, don't forget about the feature article tomorrow! -- Konig/talk 14:58, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

I don't think talk pages should be merged. I think the most appropriate way would be to simply mention them at the top of the merge target's talk page (for example inside of an archive box), so people can look up previous discussions on the older pages if they like. But really merging them and doing all the attribution correctly would probably end in a mess.
Also thanks for the reminder, I'll try to remember it tomorrow! xD poke | talk 15:37, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Rewrite and cleanup

Okay, I've been very curious about this for a long while: what's the difference between these two? Rewrite is defined as "Pages that need a rewrite. This can, for example, include copyright violations and articles of lower quality that does not qualify as stubs." and cleanup as "This is a list of articles that do not conform to the Guild Wars Wiki:Formatting." Isn't that effectively the same thing? Improve quality compared to poor formatting (thus needs an improvement of quality)?
Just curious: if they're practically the same thing, why have both? Or is there a difference that I'm missing? -- Konig/talk 05:30, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

Ooh, ooh, I think I can get this one. Cleanup is when there are one or two problems but the article can be salvaged. Rewrite is for when it's right out and needs to be redone from scratch. –Jette 07:06, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
For me, rewrite is content and cleanup is formatting/appearance. So when a page is tagged for rewrite it is the text that isn't good. When a page is tagged for cleanup, then the text is okay but the formatting is not. poke | talk 10:37, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
