Festival hat
- "Hat", "hood", and "mask" redirects here. For other uses, see Armor.
Festival hats are costume headpieces that are typically only obtainable during special events.
Acquisition[edit]
- Obtaining a Lion Mask for the first time requires having a character stand in Shing Jea Monastery when the celestial animal appears during a Canthan New Year finale.
- Obtaining a Dragon Festival/Day of the Tengu, Halloween or Wintersday festival hat for the first time requires three steps:
- Completing a relevant festival quest (each quest can only be completed once per account each year).
- Spirit of the Celebration during Dragon Festival.
- Better You Than Me and Double Your Pleasure and RUN! during Halloween.
- A Humbling Gift and The Polar Depressed during Wintersday.
- Claiming the quest reward, which is a festival hat token.
- Turning in the token to the relevant festival hat token collector NPC.
Duplication[edit]
You can create as many copies of a festival hat as you like, after showing the original to a festival hat maker. This allows any character on your account to wear any hat, without having to fulfill the requirements above.
Properties[edit]
Festival hats share common properties:
- They can be traded, but they cannot be worn by other characters, since they are customized to the original recipient.
- They cannot be salvaged.
- They have no armor rating and cannot be upgraded with runes or insignia.
- Unlike other costumes, most hats cannot be dyed. Hats that display your character's hair cannot be dyed.
- Dyeable exceptions are: Tengu Mask, Lion Mask, Dragon Mask, Sinister Dragon Mask, Imperial Dragon Mask, Mirthful Dragon Mask, Tricorne, Jester's Cap, and Festive Winter Hood.
- According to Kristen Perry, hats lack a dye channel for the dervish professions (since that space was originally used by their hood). (source)
- They can be identified once, although this will not reveal any value nor allow them to be sold to a merchant.

Notes[edit]
- Festival hats obtained after the December 17, 2009 update are costume headpieces that are worn (in effect) on top of your armor; visually, they appear to remove and replace any existing headgear. Festival hats obtained before that update:
- Use your character's helm slot instead of the costume headpiece slot.
- Have an armor rating of 0 and can be infused and upgraded with runes; some of them (i.e. Demon Mask, Dragon Mask, Grasping Mask, Imperial Dragon Mask, Mummy Mask, and Tengu Mask) have an insignia slot.
Trivia[edit]
- In June 2012, ArenaNet stated that there would not be any new hats for future festivals due to lack of art resources (source).
- Originally, there was at least one new hat for each Dragon Festival, Halloween, and Wintersday. Each festival had its own specific requirements, typically distributed as part of the event's finale and usually obtainable after the event in exchange for a large quantity of a special event item.
- During a Dragon's Festival, Halloween or Wintersday finale, if a character's inventory was full, the hat would be dropped on the ground, assigned to the character (and could be picked up by anyone after the assignment period ended). This still occurs with the Lion Mask during a Canthan New Year finale.
