So, Mr. IP 68.
What is the epic rant going to be about this time? I do enjoy your posts. They lighten up my day sometimes. Looking forward to seeing what you post! --I'm the best at what i do, and i get my party killed! ^_^ 15:26, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Constant vandalism & false information
If I was a sysop on this site I would put a big sign up saying STOP WITH FUCKING ARTICLE ALREADY all up on this page, protect the fuck out of it and then dance around naked to Bite Me by the Electric Six whilst shouting I AM THE FIRE TIGER as loud as possible. But hey, that's just me. --Jette 15:35, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- I second the protecting of this page. I fully believe in admins that they can keep it up to date. It's damn annoying when people add total bullshit information here, have edit/revert wars etc. - J.P.Talk 20:39, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

- I say just permanently semi-protect it. 90ish% of the vandalism come from IP's. Today it seemed it was mainly just one repeatedly. And sometimes there are non-sense things added to the talk page throughout the week, so semi-protecting the talk page would help as well. So I say fifth'd. -- Azazel the Assassin/talk 02:18, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

If anyone's interested, you can just go to Fahrunar, The First City and AoE the crap out of the low-level skale that are bunched near the city's entrance. I've already put the guide on PvX. Easy farming week. Everyone enjoy! Karate Jesus 15:50, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Random or Pattern?
Ok, maybe I am still a little unclear on this, but is it possible that he will fall into a pattern eventually or should I go on the basis that it is completely random. Because if it is a pattern, it could be an incredibly long time before it loops (taking into consideration that the number would be something like: # of items excluding Weapons, runes, and armor multiplied by # of explorable areas across all campaigns...)
While not exactly infinite, at a different one per week, it seems a bit ridiculous. Anyway, another thing is: what would be the given probability that a Mursaat Token will show up next? (I will see if I can calculate that out using a modified formula to what I posted above...) Amazing Steve 21:28, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Ok... I have done out the first calculation that I gave:
- # of items X # or explorable areas = approx. 61069 possible combinations
- taking that number, and dividing that by the number of weeks in a year:
- 61,069 / 52 = 1174.40 years until potential loop.
That is an improbable time frame for GW 1 to stay on-line so I answer my own question and say: it is random. If anyone has any corrections to this, please tell me... Amazing Steve 21:49, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
- It could be a random pattern :) --Arduin 21:53, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
- I think it is a pattern but not every possible item in every possible explorable area, for the most part area and item seem linked so i would say one appearance in each explorable lowering the total number quite a bit, some explorables may not be included at all specifically some in prophesies lowering the total possible appearances further. Another possibility is that he has say 2-5 appearances in each region excluding the Mists, Depths of Tyria and maybe the Realm of Torment; as this comes out with a more reasonable number around 51 or 52 so a one year cycle. -- Tenri 02:02, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
- It could be a random pattern :) --Arduin 21:53, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
- @Steve: are you arguing that there's no material difference between a repeating pattern based on all items/locations and a random pattern? Sure. However, Nick has only appeared 16 times. By contrast, establishing a pattern for Nick Sanford took over 50 appearances; we have yet to establish patterns in zaishen missions (54 appearances since last reset) and bounties (ditto). So, we need much more data. — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 02:26, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
- Your calculation is completely flawed, as most trophies are collected only in areas where they drop, which cuts the number of combinations very very significantly. Materials and quest items (like juni berries) are exceptions, as they can be used anywhere, but those are also a very small part of his list so far. Not to say that a loop through all of them is still in the GW1 timeframe, but just sayin'... Rose Of Kali 02:29, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yes it is a bis soon for much speculation. Anyway if there are repeats in the pattern it will take over a year to establish an actual pattern unless we have already seen over half of his pattern, without repeats we need to have seen about a third of his pattern for it to be shorter than a year. -- Tenri 02:40, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, I guess you are right, we don't have enough data yet. @Rose of Kali; i was basing my "everything anywhere" theory on the juni berry one, where you got them in NF and he was in Kaineg City in Factions. Completely different locations. Buy you guys are right, I just need to be patient. Amazing Steve 04:43, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, I believe there are two types of his behavior: One for L20 areas where Nicolas will ask for local drop. And one for < L20 areas where he acts much more randomly and usually demands something more unusual ranging from materials to obscure quest items in order to make it a bit more challenging. Kaineng can be considered <L20 area in explorable where he appeared (players will ding their L20 there), so he asked for something weirder. Zweistein 07:06, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
(Reset indent) Look, the dialogue at least has to be hand crafted for each situation, so it is definitely not simply some random selection of trophies or what-have-you... --Max 2 13:52, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
- Though by far, as established, we lack any amount of data to say for sure, I believe Nicholas is based on two things: 1) One item per explorable area, this may or may not include the Underworld, Fissure of Woe, Realm of Torment areas, and Tombs/explorable HoH. This would mean, if accurate, that not every trophy is used - and of the materials he uses, I think it is safe, though not definite, to say he only takes the craftable rare materials, while for the quest items, he only takes quest items from repeatable quests. Thus again, reducing the "possibles" of stabkable items. 2) I think the programming for Nicholas the Traveler is the same as Nicholas Sandford and (seemingly) the three Zaishen Quests - it only makes sense to have the programming the same as Nicholas Sandford, at least. That's just my two cents. -- Azazel the Assassin/talk 14:41, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
- I believe to us, its all random but obviously anet probably has a database of where he appears at certain weeks and every week rolls over he goes to the next location. Now I do wonder though.. what if you are standing near him when he changes locations does he just disappear?.- Chrisworld 23:04, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Linsey's post implies that it's at least not entirely random. --136.142.214.19 18:24, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

- Yup, that's twice they effed us now with an update changing his location.
- For one thing, Nick has not changed locations due to an update before. You're thinking of zquests. For another, no one got "effed". If you turned in krait skins, you got your gifts. If you farmed krait skins but didn't turn them in, you now have them for whenever Nick does want them, and in the meantime you've got the rest of the week to get behemoth hides. If you never even noticed the whole krait skins thing, just farm behemoth hides as normal. You're complaining over nothing. - Tanetris 10:44, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Nicholas reset
In light of the recent botch-up, some doubts can be cast on this article's accuracy. Supposedly Nic resets when he changes location, which would suggest that people who were fast enough yesterday could get gifts from him in Arbor Bay first, and the Wilderness later. Not been able to confirm this myself, but a friend of mine said he'd gotten his gifts with Krait Skins and could not get additional gifts off him with Behemoth Hides. I think the article should reflect the weekly reset, rather than the current "when he moves" notice. -- Elv 20:23, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
- Nice observation sir/madam --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.193.113.198 (talk).
- Just to clarify - He did not reset when he moved. I obtained 5 gifts via Krait skins early Monday, and then was not able to receive any more after he had moved to any location in Wilderness. I would assume that he does in fact reset his "gift count" at the prescribed time every week.69.249.223.63 16:38, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Foreign language bug note
I've updated the foreign language bug note to be generic (not specific to any particular week):
- ANet has consistently missed many/all of the non-English translations on Mondays.
- They usually (but not always) correct it in a mid-week update.
I think the obligation is on ANet to get the translations out on time rather than to have players notice the missing text, report it, and update the note 2x/weekly. Once ANet is back to getting all of Nick's text right every week, we can remove the note entirely. — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:24, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Consensus decision to move "Nick Speaks" ?
Could someone please point me to the consensus decision that any of the Nick Speaks sections should be moved to a user page? If that decision has already been made, then, of course, I will respect it (and I apologize in advance for not being able to find it myself). If not, I would prefer that the text remain here. Thanks! — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 09:50, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- I'm going to assume it has something to do with the fact that it has nothing whatsoever to do with the article in question and isn't funny. —Jette 10:09, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

- First things first Jette that you may find something not funny doesn't mean other people agree with you. on the second part I think it has fits here because it is about Nicholas the Traveler and people are looking here for it because it has always been here since a couple of weeks now.--Wysth 18:32, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Ok, it's correct that talk pages are required to be about the content on the article page. So I have no grievances with this move. However as it stands, the entire wiki is filled with trolling and other assorted talk that doesn't relate to the page's content (see every game update ever, and Jette). So while I have no grievances with the move of my talks, I have grievances against wiki policy and I will be posting my talks here anyway. You are free to move them.
Btw guys everyone give Jette your full attention, we all appreciate 4chan trolls correct? Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә & ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 20:47, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- I don't see the rationale in the policy quoted above. Stated reasons for removing/moving sections are:
- "(1) clear vandalism and spam; (2) links to offensive/malicious sites; (3) includes email address; (4) includes personal info about someone else; (5) prohibited by GWW:NPA and GWW:COPYRIGHT" — clearly, these first 5 ideas do not apply.
- "for archival purposes" — arguably, a few of these entries are older and might be due for archiving.
- "Removal to a more appropriate talk page and marking the move using the {{moved}} template in both the source and destination pages." — As far as I can see, there's no definition of what constitutes a more appropriate talk page or when that applies. Therefore, shouldn't there be a consensus decision before such a move?
- I don't see the harm (to the article, to the wiki, or to the wiki's readers) from a short post each week and the various comments it generates. Why is this content more objectionable (for talk) than the various rants that appear after every game update or the hijacked-topics on Gaile's support page? Sure, some of the material veers into the realm of fan fiction. Still, I think it's a clever idea and that people ought to be free to decide to skip it or not. (For example, I haven't read any of the entries for about a month.) — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 23:34, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- It's not relevant to the Nick article, it's fanfiction, and it has no place on this talk page. -- FreedomBound 23:39, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- The harm to it is that this is a HIGH TRAFFIC talk page, without the additional unrelated material. Fanfiction (which this is) belongs in userspace. This page is ready for it's 3rd archive in 4 months. That's more than some articles get in a lifetime. Please just keep the fanfiction in userspace, I might not be so nice as to just move it in the future. -- Wyn talk 00:00, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- Agreed with Wyn. We document the game, and when talk pages like this one become nothing more than a forum, something needs to change. Also, fan fiction has never been allowed in main space articles because it isn't part of the game we're aiming to document. -Auron 00:03, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- "some articles"
- "everything but the fricking game updates page and shadow form"
- Fixed that for you. —Jette 00:08, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

- It's not relevant to the Nick article, it's fanfiction, and it has no place on this talk page. -- FreedomBound 23:39, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- I think the rules have been sometimes interpreted to allow non-content discussion and sometimes not. I respect the opinions of those who want this particular type of thread removed from this particular talk; I also see the other point of view, which is why I would have liked to see a vigorous debate about the decision. Although I'm not convinced by the arguments made so far, it seems unlikely that the decision will be discussed further (or reversed). Accordingly, I'll drop my request for a review. - If something is in clear violation of policy, incorrectly placed or totally irrelevant (all of which this falls into), it does not require a consensus. —Jette 02:49, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- I understand that several/many people have found these posts amusing, and would like to see them continue. They can, just not here. I would not have a problem adding a Nick's Speaks link at the top of this page even for easy reference. The fact remains that it is fanfiction. It does not represent anything that is actually in the game and as such does not belong attached to a mainspace article. I understand that there are all sorts of misplaced rants/topics throughout this wiki, and I would love to see them all moved/removed so that the talk pages could serve the purpose they are intended to, to discuss the content of the article. I however am not going to comb through each and every page looking for them. This is a rather in-your-face example, as this page does get such a high volume of traffic on a weekly basis. In a perfect world, there would be no forum-like topics on any page of the wiki anywhere, but this community doesn't seem to have the ability to make that distinction. -- Wyn talk 09:33, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- I think that the problem wil be solved if you put a link on the top of the page Wyn if you would be so kind. I think we can be lucky that we dont live in a perfect world though. It would save much problems but also creat much more that maybe are worse.--Wysth 15:35, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- I don't even think the nick speeks stuff is good fan fiction. I might make my own nick fan fiction more inline with what I think his character is. 68 or a&s always painted a rather grim picture of a nice guy... 192.203.160.241 15:41, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- I like the clever link-at-top compromise suggested by Wyn, as it allows people to choose to read or not. (Plus, it neatly separates any concerns about changes to the status quo without consensus; those can be discussed in a more appropriate area.) — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 17:46, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

- I don't think that Fan Fiction should belong at all on a wiki. A wiki is for information, not story telling. I feel that if someone wants to do a story tell on Nick or any other character. Should create a blog (there's lots of freebies) and post it there, then link it to their page with ease. Saves a lot in the long run. ♥ Ariyen ♀ 18:29, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- 192.203 I have said this many times too other people too just because you dont think it is good and nice and fits to Nicholas, other people have to agree with you. I for instance read the story every week and enjoy them very much not only because the are totaly not Nick but also because I admire mister 68 for the creativitie. So everyone please stop crapping about the stories beeing bad you dont have too agree with me but with the new system you dont have too read them anymore either.--Wysth 20:29, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- Let me be pretty clear. It's obvious you haven't visited many wikis. I have. Wikipedia, Star trek wikis, This one, Etc. visited many. NONE of those have their "Fan Fiction" With their facts about the character and the Discussions aka talk pages remains About the Character it's self. No Stories. People use their Own User Pages to post Links to their Stories. Those places have NO Problems. People Like to read the stories, but that's what LINKS are for. Link from the discussion page to the user page to their own sites on the stories. No Prob lingo. So yes, Many would have a problem reading a long list of 'Crap' inside the discussion page that has NO relation to the main page, except using the character name in a story. A problem solved would be Links. Someone could say something Reasonable like 'I have a link on my page to stories, where this character's name is used. etc.' They could visit person's page, then stories. Saves room from reading a long list of stuff on a discussion page of a character. With Sysops, they're having to "move" these stories from discussions to user talk pages. It's creating a lot of scrolling either way, basically... that's what's gonna happen if this continues... Scrolling, and then archiving making people mad even still that they couldn't read their stories, etc. or making others mad having to 'scroll' a lot just to discuss something else. Hence, A blog, website, etc. to post stories on would save hassles from both sides. I like reading stories, but at the same time. I feel that there's needs too in that there are other things that may need to be discussed, whether it be in a talk page of a character or a user's talk page. Doesn't this make sense? ♥ Ariyen ♀ 21:46, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
