The Krytan civil war lasted from 1072 AE until 1079 AE between the White Mantle and the Shining Blade. During the Charr invasion, King Jadon, the then Krytan king, fled the throne and left Kryta leaderless and vulnerable. Shortly after that point, Saul D'Alessio founded the White Mantle in the name of his new-found gods, the Unseen Ones in order to bring peace to Kryta and led his nation to victory against the Charr at the cost of his own life, beginning years of White Mantle's rule in Kryta.

Over the years, the White Mantle became more and more ruthless, forcing poverty on those not of their order and sacrificing the Chosen on the bloodstone in the Maguuma Jungle for their Unseen Lords. When people began to find this out, the Shining Blade was formed as a rebellious group intent on taking down the corrupted organization.

In 1072 AE, Watchman Arad found that the king sired an illegitimate child who became a priestess at the Temple of the Ages, Salma, and persuaded her to claim the throne. Over time, their efforts gained the support of the Shining Blade and by the end of the Flameseeker Prophecies' fulfillment, the White Mantle's gods have been exposed as the Mursaat and were nearly brought to extinction. The White Mantle themselves had lost their leader, Confessor Dorian, along with their Inner Council, loosening the White Mantle's grip over Kryta.

Since then, Kryta had been plunged into an all out civil war. Although the conflict is mainly between the Shining Blade and White Mantle, there are various other warlords who have been attempting to seize control themselves. In 1078 AE, the Shining Blade sought the help of the Asura to find weapons to give them the upper hand in the war, but instead become embroiled in the battle against the Great Destroyer.

In 1079 AE, the White Mantle, now led by Confessor Isaiah and the inquisitors, hired brigands to help control the population of Kryta with a grip of fear and power. In turn, the Shining Blade, now fully rallied under Salma, recruited the help of the Lionguard, Zinn and Blimm, and the Ebon Vanguard who sent their elite unit, the Ebon Falcons. Evennia, a former leader of the Shining Blade who gave up her position to advise Salma, disappeared while attempting to negotiate an alliance with King Adelbern.

Eventually, three of the surviving mursaat were assassinated along with the inquisitors - sending Isaiah, High Inquisitor Toriimo, and the remaining four mursaat into a fury that led to a final battle at Lion's Arch. With the help of their allies, Salma and the Shining Blade managed to survive an onslaught of White Mantle and Jade constructs. However, the war was not won without casualties - such as the death of Captain Langmar and the disappearance of Lieutenant Thackeray of the Ebon Vanguard.
