Numbers In Names[edit]

About 3 months ago i played a GvG with some people, their guild tag was in asian letters so i assume the guild was from their. The odd thing was that every person from that guild had a number in their name. Can someone explain how this happened. -84.68.39.237 14:41, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Chinese letters[edit]

Calculations of Appearance Options[edit]

I corrected a basic arithmetic mistake in the calculation of the number of female elementalist faces. I've noticed that this also changes the number of different combinations of female elementalist appearances, which I've also corrected. I think this must also change the number of appearance options, which the article currently lists as 237. When I add the numbers across the table up for the elementalist, I get 168, which seems a lot more different than it should have been given my original correction. Furthermore, when I do the same for assassin, I get 45 rather than the article's 58. I'm wondering if maybe there is another variable I'm missing from the calculation of the number of appearance options? Whoever did the original calculations, maybe you can enlighten us how these were originally calculated so we can make the appropriate corrections. Otherwise, maybe someone just needs to totally redo this section? (Satanael 13:14, 18 February 2008 (UTC))

Height[edit]

Mayhaps there could be a list showing the max and minimum heights in order (Tallest max height to shortest max height, and shortest minimum height to tallest minimum height) I'm just guessing but I think elementalists are tallest? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.161.129.173 (talk).

The shortest female elementalist is the same height as the shortest female warrior, so I think warriors and eles are the same height. Monks are definitely among the shortest. --Lentilshine --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.152.227.190 (talk).

Gender/Sex[edit]

Why do people keep changing the word sex to gender in this article? Af far as I know, gender is a more grammatical term referring to a group of words, whereas sex implies specifically male/female, which makes it the better choice. Correct. It's the other meaning of the word. In more conservative countries or among more conservative peoples, there's a tendency to use "gender" instead of "sex". According to my psych and sociology classes, sex refers to the physical/genetic identification for male/female, and gender refers to the role that society associates with the sexes. In the 1950's, a woman that wore a suit or jeans and worked for a living would be considered female as sex, but following the gender role of men. Different time periods have different gender roles associated with dress, hairstyle, hobbies and more, but sexual identification is a constant. I believe Biscuit's use of sex is more correct, but for the average user the terms are nearly interchangeable. - Elder Angelus 20:48, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Just to add to my months-old explanation, it's also due to language. "Gender" is preferred among certain societies because English is not their primary language. And as it is with new languages, "to have sex" is a phrase that is learned rather easily, hence the almost intuitive association of the word "sex" with the act of intercourse; leading to a cultural avoidance of that word for the (perceived) more polite word of "gender". -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 11:53, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Pictures of Faces[edit]

Would it be useful to create a page which shows all the possible faces for each profession in each chapter? e.g. create a page called something like "Mesmer Appearance" and show a grid of all the Mesmer faces available in Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall. Looks good, although I think the four tables at the top would be enough. What's your thought of the different campaigns? I'm thinking it might be more helpful to put the appearances for each profession and sex for all campaigns onto the same gallery page. Sorry, I wasn't clear. That demo was just to get a feel for format. I was trying to figure out if the single screen shot image was better or the face extract was better. The face extract was a real pain. Here's version 2 of the concept using the single screen shot. ---> Character Appearance Demo. I had always intended to have 2 different cuts at the display: 1) by chapter (Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall) and 2) by profession. Take a look at this more built out version and let me know what you think. Note that the actual screenshot images are temporary. I would edit them so that all 4 elements (hair, face, hair color, skin color) were visible all at the same time. As I mentioned on my talk page, it's probably best to crop the images to show only the faces/hair/etc. instead of the whole screen. A gallery of screens like that makes it necessary to click on each image to be able to see the available options, rather than having all of them visible on the same page for easier browsing. Social Reaction[edit]

Someone removed my edit. I think people have a right to know the kind of crap they will come across while playing the game. Especially by the Casting community, or in the case of female players, the crap that comes from the male community. These things happen with such regularity by such a large number of people in those respective groups, I think it needs to be added. Social Reaction (2)[edit]

Be prepared. There are players in the game that will give you a tough time because of your profession. (you will also get a tough time based on your gender. If you are a female, it is advisable for you to play as a Male, just because of the way people treat you, such as sexual remarks, sexism, sexual harassment, etc.) It may lead to things from simple name calling, to being thrown out of groups. Most of the name calling, hazing, and ridiculing comes from the Casting community. (see Elementalist) Here is a list of a few professions that get the most hard time from players just because of your profession:

Warrior In the later stages of the game, you will find yourself locked out of groups who favor "perma-sins" over you. A perma sin is a Assassin/Elementalist. Most of the people who will give you a tough time will be Elementalists or Mesmers. They will call you things, such as "dumb brick," "stupid brick," "jock," "meathead," "caveman," "dumbass," "whammo," etc. They will also blame any Bonus failures on you.

Monk Monks get a tough time from everyone. If a mission fails, you will get the blame. If it succeeds, the caster will take all the credit. You will be under appreciated for what you do, and you will be overworked, especially by Warriors or Dervishes who overextend when they Tank. Smiting Monks will be doubly hazed and hated.

Mesmer Mesmers will be often omitted and ignored when it comes to assembling a party. They have a tough time finding their place until the later stages of the game, when Interrupts and mass health degeneration is needed.

Ranger Later in the game, all Rangers, with the exception of trapper Rangers, will have a hard time finding a party. You will be hazed by not only Elementalists for not being a caster, but also Warriors as well. Lol @ this comment. I don't know what game your playing, but Guild Wars definitely isn't full of sexual comments etc etc. Also, it usually is the monk's fault if the mission fails, because they are meant to be healing people (the only exception is gross overextending by idiots who think mending=invulnerability). Rangers are actually not that unpopular in PvE, they are pretty unpopular, but more popular than Mesmers, Ritualists and Warriors. Mesmers are nearly always shunned, even when their interruption is better suited for the task than a ranger, even in high-end PvE rangers are preferred over mesmers.Crimmastermind 23:00, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
I've been playing this game for 4 years and it definitly is full of sexual comments, harrassment, etc. This is especially true in the pvp areas. Pick up groups are the ones that are full of the overextending idiots that you mentioned. Since they are just formed to finish a mission, the team is uncoordinated and overextension is fairly common. If you are in a coordinated team with people who know what to do in a given situation, such as your own Guild, then overextension is rare. Or, if you are in a group with 8 people or so, and only one Monk, it can be difficult to manage the party's well being. Of course this also really only affects pick up groups, as coordinated teams are well prepared. Most of the issues I named apply to outposts and pick up groups, because towns are usually too large for you to be noticed, such as in Ascalon City or Lion's Arch. Smaller towns, such as Henge of Denravi have the same issues as Outposts.
Pick up groups (or Random Arenas) is where all the crap happens. The pointless name calling, ragequitting, sexual harassment, etc. I have played for over a year and a half and these things happen on a regular basis. If you don't believe me, then play as a Warrior or a Monk and go into a RA or a PuG and watch the shit hit the fan. It came to the point where the best time for me to play was during school hours so all the annoying teenagers were still at school and so I can play with people that had at least some maturity. To the first poster: I resent your generalizations concerning the caster professions. When hazing etc. takes place it has little to do with the professions so much as the person behind the keyboard. I have been playing Guild Wars for twenty-five months and not once have I ever ridiculed anybody based upon their class or sex, and I play an Elementalist! Furthermore, I play a FEMALE Elementalist and I have not once ever seen any sexual bantering of any kind! I have not been kicked due to my class or sex before, and my playing experience seems to lack the occurences which you label as commonplace! You categorize all casters by saying 'those people' and simply assume that every person playing Guild Wars as a spellcaster has a bad attitude. Well try this on for size: I have a bad attitude against people like you that make playing Guild Wars difficult where it should be easy and fun. Morons like you take the fun out of it for no good reason at all. I play female casters, and I am a teenager attending high school, yet I have not once in over two years done any of these horrible things you claim that people like me always do. I play in RA, TA, Halls, PvE, and GvG, etc. and I don't do the horrible things you claim I do, except when people give me good reason to, like you have done here. You, sir, are the reason for your troubles, and that's as simple as it gets. You can come find me in-game if you disagree. What I find strange about this whole discussion is that you are not locked into a profession in guildwars. I have never noticed any sort of community based on professions in game, and in pvp players are often expected to be able to switch characters at a moments notice depending on what the team needs. I have been playing for three and a half years now and have never heard anyone be insulted on basis of profession in game, neither by me nor anyone else. As for finding groups, or course groups are going to prefer certian professions, If I'm forming a trap group for UW why would I bring anyone whose not a ranger? For getting masters in factions mission, of course I'm going to prefer an ele or ranger over other classes for damage (and after getting them expect nuker or splinter barrage builds). Names[edit]

I was just creating a character, and it seems that when naming your character (as applies to english-speaking players) one cannot use the word 'Jewel' in the character name. Example: I tried to name my character 'Jewel of Ara' and it gave me an error message telling me that my chosen name 'contained words or partial words that are not permitten in Guild Wars. Code=031.' I then proceeded to try using several other names with the word 'Jewel' in them, but none worked. As soon as I tried a name which did not contain Jewel, my request for a name was granted. I do not know why this is, but apparently ArenaNet does not permit players to use the word 'Jewel' when naming a character. - Ara the ElegantAra 03:38, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Tested and confirmed. When I received the error, I changed "Jewel" to "Jeel" and had no problem. This is the case for both PvE and PvP character creation. Luke1138 18:20, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Yes that's correct. That's what I was implying in my post. Sorry I wasn't clear. The word "Jew" was imbedded in the failed name. When I took out the "w", it was fine. The filtering/censoring system in Build Wars is paranoid. You can't even say the word "bite" without getting censored. Apparently it annoys Frenchies who fail at the game anyway, but no one cares except the tin foil hats at Anet.
I don't like the overzealous filtering either, which is only necessary because some people take themselves too seriously and get offended way to easily. But you've got to look at it from ArenaNet's point of view: Those same people will stop playing the game for these reasons, whereas the presence of the filtering is at most an annoyance for everyone else. I also confirm this. Yesterday i tried to name a storage character as "Jewel Box" and was not allowed until i removed the word (combination) of having "Jew". I totally disagree with this filter option, but we have to abide by it :( -- Pixy | Talk User pixy hand.png 08:20, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Naming Delay[edit]

There's been a couple of times where either one of my friends or myself has tried to delete a character and recreate it with a different profession or the like. However, when they try to reuse the same name, it says the name has already been taken. It's not as if someone has quickly used the name, since after a short period of time the name resets and becomes useable again. All I was wondering is if anyone knows how long for a name to reset, and if there's a faster way to speed up this process. Blood Red Giant 03:02, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

I've just tested this with the following results. Bottom line is that it depends upon when you delete your character.
Scenario 1: When I create a new character and immediately delete it (i.e. don't go into town, don't take any quests), the character doesn't seem to get fully registered with the system but the name does get allocated. So if you logout at that time and go to the character select screen, you actually won't see your newly created character there. However, the name has been registered. Since you don't seen your newly created character there, you cannot delete it. And so the system views the name as still being in use.
Scenario 2: When I create a new character and go into town or take the initial quest, the character is fully registered. I log out and go to the character select screen and see the new character. I can then delete the character and then immediately create a new character with the same name. I tried this using the same chapter (e.g. Factions) and the same type of character (e.g. Warrior) and was able to reuse the name with no issue.
So the summary here is to make sure you go into town or take the initial quest before your log out with a newly created character. Otherwise, they won't show up on your character select screen and you won't be able to delete them and the name cannot be reused. Luke1138 17:36, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
I solved this problem by filling the empty character slots with dummy characters. It rewrote any lasting data, and thus freed up the name for reuse. Should solve just about any delay issue. Blood Red Giant 06:52, 13 February 2009 (UTC)


I just tested another version of this theory. I am a Guild Wars addict and, as such, have multiple accounts. I decided that I wanted to delete one of my characters on account A and recreate her on account B. Every time I tried to recreate her, I got the message that this character name was still in use. Campaigns[edit]

Quoted from the article: "It is actually a good idea to switch campaigns before completing your starting campaign. The Prophecies campaign has quests that offer free skills; the Factions campaign gives early access to max armor and weapons; and the Nightfall campaign gives access to level 15 heroes." "The only way to change ..."[edit]

The article says "The choice of primary profession cannot be changed once a character has been created. The only way to change is to delete and recreate.". Now I wonder what exactly this means? You will not have the same character with a different profession. You'll have a different character with a different profession. You did not change your character's profession. If it means the only way to retain your name while changing profession, that makes more sense but it's not true any more ever since you can change your name for a fee.

Basicly, if you want a character with the same name with a different primary profession, you'll have to delete and recreate. So you can't change your primary profession without deleting your character, if you want to have the same name. But I agree that the note is a bit cryptic and weird. Using armor and weapons after character renaming.[edit]

"Do not create characters with obscene or offensive names, even indirectly, partially or suggestively. The filter will block most offensive words and words that have the potential to be abused. This is specifically mentioned in the Naming Policy. ArenaNet will offer you a chance to rename the character but take note that customized weapons and armor cannot be used on or by a renamed character. " I was under the impression armor and weapons weer bound to a unique character-id, not to the character's name. So getting your name banned and changed would still allow you to use your 'old' gear. False missing character bug[edit]

I came across a *minor* bug. Since I don't believe this is anything major I have not reported this bug, but felt that maybe it might be worth noting in this character creation guide. I'll let someone else decide if it should be added or not though.

When creating a new Factions or Nightfall character, if you log out to the character selection screen immediately after the opening cinematic, your newly created character will not show up in the character selection list and you will instead see the same amount of empty character slots you had before creating the character. Despite the appearance that your new character has been deleted, the character is still on your account, you are just not able to access it. Creating another new character after this will still not display the previous new character in the character selection screen. Despite showing no loss of empty character slots, you are using up your available character slots and will result in an error Code=043 when all empty slots on your account are used up and you attempt to create more characters. In other words, you will be able to access the character creation when you shouldn't be able to, but you will not gain additional characters for free. Prophecies characters do not appear to be affected. Fully logging out of your account and logging back in fixes this bug.M4411k4 09:16, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Well, I was somewhat worried about taking ANet's time away from Guild Wars 2 for such a minor bug (like many, I'm very excited about their next game and want it now :) ). But you're absolutely right, I should report it. ANet knows how to prioritize things and so they should be the ones to decide. Checking the link you provided to ensure I do not report a duplicate case, I managed to find that it was indeed already reported on another page. Campaign for PvP[edit]

In the article, it says that campaign does not matter to PvP characters. This is not true: it affects the choices a player has down the character creation line. It affects your choice of primary proffesion (sin and rit factions only, para and derv NF only) and you choices on the appearance chain. It also affect your starting armor appearance, but this doesn't matter as much because armor can be customized in the PvP equipment panel.--Bold Baby Undies 04:39, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Music for each Profession is different[edit]

As in, when making a new character, if one were to highlight any of the Professions when choosing one and leave it without proceeding on to choosing the Sex, it will have a music specific to that Profession. Would there be any reason to adding a note/trivia/whatever of any kind about this, or is it just something I find some minor interest in and adding a note would just be a pointless waste of space? Its an old beta element and release element as they are themes to the "hero's of the GW storyline" henchmen, mehenlo and crew, which correspond to these professions. Also the male warrior, ranger and Mesmer pictured here never existed in GW upon release. Also goes for rit, dervish and paragon.24.160.87.94 01:21, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

So what can't I access?[edit]

In the description of role-playing characters: "This eventually allows the character to gain access to virtually all PvE and PvP content Guild Wars has to offer."

So if it is "virtually all", it isn't "all", and there must be something a PvE character can't access. Since a PvE element that can't be accessed by PvE characters can't be accessed by anyone - PvP-only characters by definition cannot access it - there would be no way we could even know about it. So it must be something PvP. What piece of PvP content is inaccessible for PvE characters?

"Virtually all" and "almost all" mean the same thing in vernacular English. Only in advertising ("virtually" == "not") and computing ("virtual memory" is, um, "not" memory) does "virtual" mean anything else. I stand by my comment that a user interface element is not what is usually understood by "content", therefore I read the original statement as meaning that there was some sort of item, skill, outpost, etc. that only PvP characters could access, and I couldn't imagine what it was. (Although now that I've thought about it, PvE characters having PvP weapons doesn't seem likely to work, nor is it necessary.) Cynique 13:11, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Character Preview[edit]

Could someone pls make an option to choose the appearances like a preview for the character you want to make, on the wiki? I'm like rly, rly noob at coding. I mean like how you can preview a character ingame when making it, it would also be great if that was possible for armor combinations.
