Talk:Mad King Thorn
Well, I was thinking about leaving this out, but it's amusing *patpats Gaile's talk page*. There are rumors that Gaile dated Mad King Thorn :o. And his real name is Mad King Eugene. ~ | Pae - Talk | 23:51, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
Question[edit]
What does he give in the Halloween 2007?
- We don't know, no one does, go poke Gaile :P but she won't say anything :P just wait till Wednesday Tomoko 21:21, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

2006 & 2007 (& soon 2008)[edit]
This page has information from 2006 Halloween and 2007 Halloween mixed. Therefore it is corrupted. I have two proposals. First one is to make it so when players search for Mad King, they come to page asking them to choose - Mad King 2005, Mad King 2006, and Mad King 2007. Each page will have appropriate information for that Halloween such as what prizes you get and what dialogue was used.
Or if it is determined that differences are minor such as it's just joke dialogues and hats/masks that are different then we catorgize such on pages - for example Joke Dialogue - 2005, Joke Dialogue - 2006, and Joke Dialogue - 2007. The problem is information for 2006 Halloween is incomplete and there are dialogue lines in 2007 I do not recall seeing in 2006 along with several others. Anyway I created 2007 page - http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Mad_King_Thorn_2007. Barinthus 13:25, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- lol i loved the paragon joke, dont know why.--Cursed Angel 14:08, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
Would it be too much to have separate sections within the article? Or are there too many dialogue differences? --Lemming 17:18, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Separate sections would probably work, if the dialogues aren't too different. But currently most of the article refers to 2006 and not much about 2005, some details from this year. - anja 17:21, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Yes I noticed the main description at the top needs to be updated as it refers to the previous years. I think almost all the jokes are different this year, however for 2005 and 2006 I remember them being fairly similar. --Lemming 17:26, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- I'm against splitting into different years, because the differences are minor, and can be documneted under subheadings in the proper section of the article, as Lemming suggested. Calor - talk 18:58, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Right now I suspect dialogues differences are not too great to justify three seperate sections but I want to double-check. Blame it on my history major background if you want but we're taught to not make assumptions with our research. I will visit the Mad King again later today and capture all dialogues this time. However, FYI half of joke dialogues on this page are from 2007 not 2006. Anyway, back to the point, if it is as what I suspected we can just do it all on this page with subheadings such as "Joke Dialogues - 2006" and "Joke Dialogues - 2007." Rewards will have to be differentiated as well since this year we get trick and treat bags and last year people got various items. It's also a shame we don't have 2005 data unless 2005 and 2006 are exact same other than the Kamadan addition? Barinthus 19:34, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

- I vote No on splitting the page. It should have separate headings for the different dialogues --Primeval Sentinel Talk
- One other thing to consider is that most of dialogues were added to this page after the initial appearance of Mad King for the current Halloween so how do we know those pertains to 2007 or 2006 or both? The whole thing is corrupted. The only proper thing to do is to revert to the version it was before the first appearance of the King for 2007 and edit in 2007 information. Then after that, the community can look at 2007 dialogues and determine whether if they were the same for 2006 (tedious at best unless there's evidence somewhere else) or leave 2006 information as it was before the edits made after the first appearance. Barinthus 03:25, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- Speaking as the person who added in that massive bunch of dialogue, it's from the 2007 version. LA, specifically. I'll also note that the dance dialogue, at least, is exactly the same as the screenshot I have of it from 2005. I've attended all 3 Halloween events and, aside from the jokes, I'm quite confident that none of the dialogue this year was new. I see no reason to split the article. A subpage for retired jokes, maybe, but there are more differences between LA and Kamadan dialogues than there is from year to year. - Tanetris 12:38, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

- Two (or three) versions of the same article are only going to confuse people. Surely there is enough redundancy to just add a note like "applies only to 20XX" where appropiate?
- Or just add a sticker at the beginning that dialogue and whatnot might vary. I doubt ANet will really change that much, would be needless work for them.-- Cyberman 15:48, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
When does the Mad King "see you"?[edit]
I noticed in LA that the King gives Presents/Kills you as long as you are on the circle of these mysterious green flowers. Lets say, you stand some feet behind him, next to the witch's cauldron, he wont interact with you. if you stand at the edge of the flower-circle at the stairs, he will. In Kamadan, he will still see you if you are a bit outside of the "flower cycle". About the middle between the stairs and the nearest flower is enough to still be able to play his games. Well i dunno if this was a bug or if i was just to slow, but when i stood in kamadan at this place, i died immediatly after having entered the commands at the "Mad King Says" part. —ZerphaThe Improver 14:17, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks[edit]
I have all the masks from Halloween 2007 now. and will the other masks from the past able to get later?
- No sorry, you have never been able to get masks from events you were not present at at the time. --Lemming 17:19, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah it's a shame. I trashed my masks from first two Halloweens and first Wintersday because I ran out of storage space then now they introduced that NPC hat maker. Ah well, c'est la vie Barinthus 19:37, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
Massive Revision at 2007 page[edit]
After visiting the King again and taking more complete screenshots, I am satisifed that the overall script is pretty much the same with some minor differences. This page does need to be edited big time although. I've came up with a proposed revision for 2005, 2006, and 2007 visits by the Mad King - see it at [Revision]. If the community approves, it can be simply moved over to this. Main points here are to differinate dialogues from LA and Kamadan along with changes in scripts over the year along with rewards given out. Tanetris - since you say you have screenshots from 2005, go ahead and edit that in.
If a dialogue section is exact same over three Halloween we can just remove years from the subheading. If a section is particular to 2006 and 2007 (due to Kamadan/LA dialogues or whatever), we can just label as 2006 & 2007 or Post 2006 or whatever.
Anyway I am done here - I present my revision for the community to look at, consider, accept, edit, or flat-out reject. Barinthus 20:29, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- Bad formatting here - here's the revision at the right address [[1]] Barinthus 04:43, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
- I'm fine with keeping everything on same page but the way the current page is set up, it's misleading. Every Halloween isn't exactly the same. Every year there are something new and different dialogues. I even have to wonder if people even bothered to compare this with the one I set up. *shrug* Barinthus 06:44, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
Merge proposal[edit]
I believe having 2 separate pages for this NPC is redundant and unnecessary. I would propose that the yearly dialog be maintained together (2005 dialogue/2006 dialogue/2007 dialogue), rather than split into the various subheadings and possibly even as subpages as this page is going to get very long otherwise. I would prefer it keep the Mad King Thorn name, rather than adding the year. -- Wyn 11:28, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

- Merge, it's pointless having multiple pages for the same NPC when all the information can easily be shown on one page. Draco 23:16, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
- If something is to be separated, it's the quotes. IF they keep chaning every year, they could be in a "Mad King Thorn/Quotes 2007" style. MithTalk 10:29, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

New Jokes for 2008[edit]
I only managed to get a screenie of one of them
- "What's the difference between someone who doesn't laugh at my jokes and a corpse?"
- "I don't know either!"
Thats the one i got... the other i was there for (but emote spam pushed it off my screen too fast) was something Like
- "I know you're all looking for information about the future. Well I'm gonna tell you something...In 200 years... You're all dead!"
If someone feels like adding the first joke to the article and finding the actual words for the second one id say go right ahead Mashav 05:41, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Repeating Names[edit]
When Thorn calls on an individual to play RPS with him, he will occasionally (happened twice in one visit, once in another) call the same name. Meaning he calls their name, then goes on to beg, laugh, etc., and when he returns to RPS he will call a previous contestant again. Is it simply because they failed, or some weird bug? And also, since I have been asked by more than one person, does /pickme make it more likely to be called? - Vik 03:44, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
- I don't think /pickme influences it as I have been picked a total of 3 times this Halloween without using that emote at all in active districts. In the first two occurrences I was picked back-to-back, he picked me once and then right after I tied him in the rock-paper-scissors match he picked me again, even though I was in an active district. --Silver Edge 08:32, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Mad King's Dialogue if not all Instruments are played[edit]
Hey, I was in a mostly inactive district, and I noticed this dialogue when the Mad King asked us to play instruments: "Where are the GUITARS? Don't you know you can't choose a better instrument? YOU SHOULD ALL BE ASHAMED!"
After that, he killed everyone. I imagine that the GUITARS part is replaced with whatever instrument that is not played or whatever. I can provide a screenshot if requested.

What - or who - is he?[edit]
In the Halloween quests this year, he gives us temporary control of creatures in the Underworld - creatures usually controlled by Dhuum. But if he is so powerful that even invoking his name makes evil monsters bow their heads, he could very well be a god, also since he even has his own realm. I mean, mere ghosts usually don't have the power to kill persons by thought alone, as he does when his crowd fails his emotes. Paddymew 20:04, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- He's definitely the most BA NPC IMHO. It'd be awesome if he was a god, as he seems to be the most powerful thing in the game as well. GW2 better have him. --ScorpDeception63 22:51, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Member of Ascalon's Chosen?[edit]
Is Mad King Thorn a member of Ascalon's Chosen? On April 1, 2010, while we were all small and the minis were HUGE, I saw a gigantic mini of the Mad King. His Guild Cape is charred, but is is definitely an Ascalon's Chosen cape. Here's the screen shot I managed to take: File:Mad_King_Thorn_Guild_Cape.png. Silmalel 18:13, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
- Probably not, his model looks similar to Adelbern's or Rurik's. It's probably a detail they didn't edit out when they modified the model.

- Yes, I'm aware on both fronts. Not long ago, it had all of Thorn's dialogue for during the finale. Okay, with this halloween we now know a lot more about thorn.
- -Former King of Kryta
- -Ruled at same time as Joko
- -8 wives
- Thorn was a canibal
- -Wife 5 was his "favorite" that he burned alive...
- -Randomly executed people
- -Lives in the realm of Madness somewhere... Possibly realm of torment, but I don't remember seeing him
- -Was executed by his people
- -Corpse was desecrated
- -Pretty much killed everyone who didnt laugh at his jokes
- -Trying to get ressurected and take over the world... like Joko

- The Waiting Game 2009 quest description states he has a "Mad Realm", which I always assumed was his own personal little hide away in the Mists.
- Ah, right, I remember that now. It's most likely within the Underworld though. -- Konig/talk 22:53, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

- Not everything we see in the Underworld is the whole Underworld. Look along the edges - it continues. It's possible that the beginning area(s) of the HA/Tomb maps are of the Underworld realm. Do we go to them in the elite mission? Nope. Do not think all we see is all there is. -- Konig/talk 02:29, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

- Well, Mad King Thorn seems to be under a layer of enchantments that weaken around halloween. So I'm assuming that some sort of magical force is actually allowing mkt to force his way out of the realm of madness for a little while. and realm of madness is part of the underworld, but maybe not completly under grenth's command. grenth seem to only control the newly dead. he is in charge of determining where the dead go, but doesnt have long term control over them. im thinking, maybe realm of madness will be a new instance that we can enter via lyssa's muse.Nibelhim 15:20, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) What's with the link to Lyssa? Nothing about Lyssa is ever brought up around Halloween and Lyssa is not connected to madness... -- Konig/talk 22:38, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
- Lyssa is connected with chaos, which is synonymous with madness. King Neoterikos 23:04, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
- Lyssa is actually based on greek mythology.... and she IS related to madness. even in guildwars. her statue drives ppl who stare at it long enough mad.Nibelhim 23:21, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Does all this mean that Thorn is loosely based on an actual King or maybe several? I think I remember hearing something about Henry VIII having a whole mess of wives and having one executed, although I am not sure it was death by fire or whatever. 69.182.192.223 05:58, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
- I find all that highly doubtful and the number of wives could very easily be a pure coincidence. Anet may have a lot of references, but Thorn is one of their most original characters. They wouldn't screw it up by making him a mirror of a living guy. Not to mention I don't know of any king who not only starved his people (makes me think French Revolution - but no fish ladies were involved with Thorn) but also had 8 wives, skinned villages alive, lived during a time of famine, and so forth. Yeah, I don't think he's based off of any king. At all. -- Konig/talk 06:08, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
- His 5th wife was burnt to death, not by him but rather an army of disgruntled peasants. at least, i think its his fifth wife.Nibelhim 02:19, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
- "Thorn was a canibal" - this might be in reference for after he became a spirit. @ "not by him but rather an army of disgruntled peasants" Proof? His castle was burnt, and his fifth wife while alive (out of 8) was burned alive. They may be two different cases - though he could have married 3 times after his death. Not impossible. -- Konig/talk 02:31, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
- if it was after death, then not canabalism since a ghost eating flesh isnt really the same species.... unless he ate other ghosts. anyways.... thorn is funny132.205.103.57 13:04, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

The page says doesn't know when he ruled, but also says same time as Joko. Bit of conflict no? I mean we could ballpark when he ruled from then couldn't we? 70.30.81.158 05:13, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Nope. We don't know when Joko was an "up and coming king" the only thing we can ballpark is "between Kryta becoming independent and Joko's defeat by Turai" which is basically a 500 year span (358 AE to 862 AE). Which isn't very helpful, tbh. -- Konig/talk 06:35, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
Thorn's Hate list...[edit]
Well, just noticed, but a lot of collectors seem to say thorn hates specific things... lets start a list
I know he hates tengues and etins.

Re-write proposal[edit]
As mentioned above, a re-write, or rather an expansion, of this article is needed. I got a funny idea not too long ago about a unique way to write it up, and had done so here. It's rather unconventional, so I didn't go replacing it, and wanted other's opinions. Would having a unique writing style for this article be worthy? -- Konig/talk 08:19, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
- You get a gold star for effort, but I'd prefer a more conventional description of MKT and his history. Arshay Duskbrow 08:42, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
- Well, its obvious the wiki for MKT is in sore need of a lot of additions. I like the idea of the wiki being wrote in first person, but it is a wiki. Nibelhim 23:49, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
- Wanted to get people's views on this before updating the article - if people liked it, I'd just copy past, if not then I'd rewrite my write-up. I'd like more than 2 inputs before changing the article either way though. -- Konig/talk 05:18, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

While your writeup could be amusing to some, it is not appropriate for use in the manner you are proposing. This article is immediately informative and should remain as such. -Faer 07:59, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

New 2010 jokes?[edit]
Are there new jokes for 2010? I'll be sorely dissappointed if there isn't. 67.149.248.3 14:13, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

- Correction: Invisible Crony (Candy brony). 'Overlord Frosty' 14:45, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- Not really. His pony is invisible. Why would he have a pony that is invisible? So he doesn't have to SEE one. Bronies want to see ponies. MithTalk 18:55, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

"Pick Me" has no influence[edit]
It seems that contrary to the ongoing popular belief, emoting "Pick Me" while attempting to play rock-paper-scissors with Thorn has no effect. For today's celebrations, I had two characters just standing idle during these times when they were picked. The first instance occurred at the second finale of the day in LA. I had logged in and was doing the usual emotes as necessary, but when he began the routine for r-p-s, I stopped to do some other stuff outside of the game, and when I glanced back, my character was dead from having been picked by Thorn. The second instance occurred at the third finale in Kamadan with a character on my other account. The same thing happened. I was following along, but when it came time to play r-p-s, my character was idle. As point of fact, he actually picked my character three times during this finale while I was idle. So, it appears that "Pick Me" has no bearing on your character being picked. HanokOdbrook 13:51, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- He seems to ignore those who don't participate at all. This morning, I had both my characters picked shortly after another (I tried to keep up). Aside from me and perhaps a dozen others, most seemed to be afk and died a lot. 91.14.237.184 16:49, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- I was in a party with someone who was AFK. I was active, but Thorn picked my teammate. (Naturally, they lost.) – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 02:57, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
- They could change it next year so he only chooses characters who have Mad King's Fan and avoid picking AFks. --Silver Edge 07:23, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

- I dunno know about you, but next year I plan to be celebrating H'ween in Guild Wars 2, not GW1 ;-) – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 07:55, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
- Assuming GW2 will be released... but even then, I and others will be returning for new content and festivals. I just hope Anet is smart enough to not put festivals on rl holidays in GW2 (or at the very least, make sure the two games' finales don't overlap) - biggest issue with festivals in GW1 is that they're linked to rl holidays so people are often having plans outside GW on the finale days. Seals[edit]
"The first seal was broken when Salma took the throne." - what's the source for that? EDIT: Oh it's the quest text from the Countess of Hakewood. For some reason I was under the impression Halloween quests came out before WiK content. razor39999 13:15, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
Armor similarities?[edit]
Forgive me for asking as this may seem very obvious and confirmed by the developers, but does his armor seem A LOT like king adelberns? --71.202.172.177 07:59, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
- It's probably intentional. They're both royalties after all. And you can even take note that Thorn's cape has the same emblem that's on Adelbern's cape (along with a lot of other places). Konig/talk 08:10, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
- Thought exactly the same myself, it can't be coincidental its not just adelburn's armor also since he has some features from rurik's too so in someway he could be related to there bloodline, that and there all warriors too so maybe we will find out one halloween in the future ^^. --Find And Seek 23:47, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
- While it's never said Thorn is descended from King Doric, the modern Krytan royalty (Salma and her father) were - King Doric was the first king of Ascalon and the ancestor of Adelbern. However, I think it is more related to the fact that it is a royal armor (only those three figures wear armor like it, and are the only male Tyrian kings seen in the game). Konig/talk 03:00, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- Seeing how Rurik has the same armor as Adelbern, it's completely possible that they had been using the same armor their ancestors had for a long time. It could also just be a coincidence with no relation, created by using Adelbern's model as a base, like with the White Mantle and the Shadow Army humanoid shadows. MithTalk 04:41, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- The cape might be, but the armor isn't. Look at the concept art by Katy Hargrove where the armor is *more* prominent. Also, I believe that Thorn's model was created from scratch (I recall this being mentioned during a discussion with the devs on possibly improving the Halloween event sometime during 2011).
