Resurrection refers to any mechanism that brings a being back into life after it dies. Most players consider "res" (or often "rez") skills to be a vital component of any build in both PvE and PvP. You will not be popular if you are the only surviving member of the party and you cannot resurrect the others.
Resurrection shrines are found in nearly all explorable areas and missions, with the exception of certain PvP arenas and Elite Missions. In PvE, 10 seconds after a party wipe, all members are teleported to the shrine and (if dead) brought back to life at full health, but with the energy they had when they died. In PvP, the timing depends on the arena.
There are two main types of resurrection skills:
- Hard resurrection (AKA hard res) refers to reusable skills.
- Soft resurrection (AKA soft res) refers to the two resurrection skills that cannot be reused until recharged by a morale boost or by zoning.
In PvP, every character that is not a dedicated healer/protector usually carries some form of resurrection, unless they serve a special function (e.g. the flag runner in GvG). In 8-player teams, one player carries a hard res (often a Mesmer with high Fast Casting), while the others carry the speedier Resurrection Signet (a soft res). When a party's res signets are depleted, they will try for a morale boost to recharge them.

- Resurrection skills that return the target to 50% health (or less) will fail if the target's modified health is 1 point. For example, a 55 Monk with 60% Death Penalty cannot reliably be brought back to life by Light of Dwayna.
- Players that swap weapons frequently might have trouble managing energy after being resurrected by a skill that only restores a fraction of their energy, especially if they were wielding their high energy set when dying.
