Hi, I have a simple problem but it still is a problem. I no longer know my e-mails password, and my emails site is currently down. So when i signed up for the tourney to make predictions I wasn't able to because I had to go to my email, Which I thought was suppose to be my accounts e-mail.. I looked on the site for information on this but I couldn't find any.. Any suggestions?

Stolen Account

Hi, well lets see.. I was giving my buddy access key to a buyer. He said he needed my email and password to put the money in my storage. I'll pipe up while you are waiting for Gaile to respond. You would be best opening an issue with support and explain the situation to them is as much detail as possible. Also, as has been stated on the in-game log-in screen for ages, you should never give your password to anybody. Now ive been "hacked" the same way bla bla you know..... Once i wanted to buy something from plaync ingame store,so i made a account ingame but it didnt work so i canceled it. Now im trying to reset my password and it keeps sending me to plaync website and i can log in. so i made a new account there. Then i tried to add acces keys but it said it was invalid. Ive posted this also on Reginas page and they said i should talk to you. And i dont know how to contact support. At the top of the Support page you'll see links to log in and also "Ask a Question." You'll need both of those. First create a PlayNC account - This will open the way for you to submit support tickets. Once you've made the account and logged in you will be able to use the "Ask a Question" function to send a memo about your case to Support. You'll find a few drop down menu options on the petition page behind the "Ask a Question" link, but don't be too concerned if you can't get exact matches for your problem. They'll figure it out. ;) One you're done, submit the ticket and start waiting. Do not post your email address here as it only makes you more of a target for such things, including spam. If you have really been hacked, you should contact support, although there's probably not much they can do, unfortunately. Kokuou 20:14, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Problem with guild name

Their is a high ranked guild on the ladder that's name is highly inappropriate and I felt that I should ask why the guild isn't banned. Come Honor [Face] is very sexually inappropriate for an MMORPG and am wondering why this guild has yet to be banned. I heard a rumor that they aren't getting banned because their too high ranked, I think this is crazy! Just because a guild is high ranked means they can make an inappropriate guild name? I think the guild "Puff Puff Pass That [Shit]" was less offensive and vulgar than Come Honor, and Puff Puff was banned several times!--'ÑöĭƑýtalk 23:11, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Someone sending fake e-mails?

One of my friends also had this issue: Just letting you all know.

There's a fake e-mail going around claiming to be from a "Guild Wars Community" website sent by someone named "yulia". It's supposedly about "account security" but since I was not signed up for that site I know that it's fake. I did not click the link or even mouse over it (Deleted it instead and marked it as spam). I'm posting this here so if anyone here receives an e-mail like that, they know they should delete it immediately without clicking or mousing over the link. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:71.174.18.132 (talk).

Thank you for the warning. This week's set of in-game (log-in screen) messages addresses fake emails of this sort, and we are all hopeful that folks will be very, very leery of unsolicited emails of this sort.
It is not hard to figure out of an email is legitimate. Use your email program to look not at the "return address," which can be faked, but at the actual "properties" of the email, which will show you the real sender. Please consult your particular email program's help info to learn how to view "the skeleton" or the background information, and do not trust the "From" that you see on the surface! -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 01:06, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Secondly, as you were told, the credit card was reported as stolen. This is something that you need to take up directly with Support. I cannot mediate this issue, for they have access to the tools to resolve this, not I. Hello BadaToT. I just checked your ticket (yes, that is the "Incident" that you asked about). It appears that you have provided more information to the Support Team, which is good. The team has checked the credit card charge and they have found that it was not processed -- you were not charged for your purchase. You may want to speak with your credit card company. Hi Gaile! I would like to bring your attention to this conversation and ask you to investigate it and respond. This is becoming a major issue for just about everyone I know who plays this game, and if it continues, I'm afraid GW is going to lose a lot more of it's player base than the skill balance issues have already driven away. When players can't complete missions, cannot properly play their role within their party, etc. due to lag and disconnection issues, they will just stop playing. This problem is really becoming chronic. Hi Wyn. I've been working with different folks over the last couple of days to find out more about this situation. We've certainly seen an increase in forum posts about the matter, even while Support hasn't seen a spike in tickets. Regina is advising folks to contact Support, and of course she's right about that. I have contacted Technical Support to ask their input on the situation, and I will report back when I have their comments and pass the word along to Community so they can post in forums, as well.
We're sorry for any inconvenience that players are experiencing. So far, in careful looks, we are not seeing internal issues, but we'll keep monitoring, of course, and will be casting a particularly watchful eye on all the data that is available from both internal and external sources to see if we can figure out what's causing the latency and/or lag spikes. What I tend to see Pika Fan is people hit some very noticeable problem and combine it with some other very noticeable problem, within hours or days, to reach the conclusion that there is some kind of "ongoing problem lately." There could very well be ongoing faults somewhere, but there could just as easily be multiple little issues all over the network.
Related note: I hit a bad one something like 30 hours ago where some guildies and I were aiming for consecutive wins in Team Arenas and I suffered some bad lag spikes in two matches before being dropped and getting a failed reconnect between matches. The opposing team after that drop had a member hit the same problem and those who were left fought 3 versus 3. I had no other internet connection issues at the time, so the problem was close to the Guild Wars servers, yet my party (American, Canadian & Italian) weren't touched by it. -- WarBlade 08:58, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Well, some of the lag spikes I've been experiencing have only affected my, while others have frozen entire parties for 30+ seconds at a time, and when it's done we are all dead. In most places in pve, that's not so much of an issue, but it really bites when you are in the Domain of Anguish, UW, FOW, and other elite areas where when you die you are done. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 16:44, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Has anything been done to the American server(s), its been really good for me today, for the moment at least. In-game I'm running around 344ms in Shing Jea, though I'm not sure about how many American users are on at this time (its 9.21am Friday morning here.). More importantly, my pingplotter isn't reporting mass packet losses from the plaync servers, occasionally (with the odd spike in ms too) but nothing near as bad as say yesterday. 000.00.00.00 20:23, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
No changes were made that I am aware of. I can check with our TS Team, but I think they will tell me that everything is as it was yesterday from our corner of the world. I will read up the thread, but have you sent in a ticket with the valuable info that you're gathering? Out of curiousity, has anyone tested for traffic shaping on the isp level? A number of the "major" US (maybe all, I don't know) ISPs are quietly implementing traffic rules to close down on p2p and other high volume users which eat up alot of the pipe at that level. I read about (and if I can find a link again I'll add it) some open source tools that would help detect such things but I believe they require an install on both ends of the connection. Gaile, I'm running the pingplotter today for as long as I can, I did start one overnight but we had a power-spike here and it reset my computer and broke my microwave (the 'old beast' is no more [cries]). As I said, got it running now but today has been really good so far, most of the speeds on the 'hops' come back green and very few packet losses, thats the US end, the Europe address support got me to check is still in the high 400ms mark as a standard, the US 197ms according to this program.
I am confused though, my understanding on the whole ping, hops, ms, packet loss thing is really... really low, just know a higher ms is not the best thing. But, the Pingplotter returns say, as it is now, 193ms round trip from me to the end server, while in-game its saying - as a I stand the Great Temple America Dist 1 - that its 343ms and staying around there.
None of my friend to whom speak 'Nerd' (I say that with love of course) are around to explain what my brain lacks in the whole ping/ms/internet stuff... anyone got an understanding of why this might be? Have you used the "Test my computer" tool? Have you submitted a support ticket giving the Technical Support Team that information? Was funny, I just sent off an updated ticket and Guild Wars went, how shall we say "lag-tastic" and I managed to catch it with Pingplotter. Over a 20 second episode of 100% packet loss with Guild Wars spazzing. So that went off. I was in KC Europe Dist 1 at the time. That log has been sent to Support as well. Edit: I think your servers just don't want me to get a second Legendary Survivor... every time I go on a survivor character, or go it, it always lags >.< ^_^ 000.00.00.00 06:32, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey Gaile, for about an hour and a half maybe now the web address Support gave me to test using Pingplotter has become unreachable, and pinging through Command Prompt in Windows reports Timed out (100% loss). The address is 206.127.145.228. If there's an issue this can't be a playing server, so to speak, cos I'm currently in-game, Sunspear Great Hall Europe Dist 1 (206.127.145.9). (Reset indent) Thanks to those of you who are sending over tickets to Technical Support. It takes a bit of time, and we thank you for giving us that effort. I personally asked TS about something two nights ago, and sure enough, the issue with my getting sudden "overlapping page" slow-downs ("It's a bloomin' slideshow!") was related to my running my email program while playing. Doh! I did know that, but being a bit obsessive about accepting emails, even at 1 in the morning, I just didn't like to switch it off. ;) Anyway, I was in last night and experienced no lag, probably because I turned off the other programs.

TS tells me that some anti-virus can cause delays, but team members can provide advice on how to resolve those issues or conflicts. Some players run music programs without realizing that those can impede the resources needed to run the game. But there are many other situations not inside the player's home, of course, and we'll want to check those out, too. So keep sending those tickets, include whatever data you have (ping reports, "Test My Computer" results, etc.) and again, thanks for doing so. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 17:18, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

I know Windows Media Player doesn't like to run in the background, for me at least, when I've got Guild Wars on. But I usually don't haven't had mass programs in the background, say bar an anti-virus and TS. Two-three months ago I had more in the background and ingame was sweet with a capital SWE and a capital ET ^_^. [pats his trusty mac sitting proudly on the desk behind him, the bearer of all his extra entertainment as he plays online] "You never let me down. Look look. It can play music, browser the internet, it even folds the washing O.O" ^_^
This is quite fun, a nice guy at Support, a Mike C. explained a lot to me, especially about the in-game meter so I might need to check my system yet (if so, its a reason to buy new hardware ^_^). Kaspersky, AVG, Avira, Avast, Norton, and NOD32 (ESET) are all the same...so it can't be related that way. I tested with my firewall off and anti virus off...maybe 3ms difference. With neither installed again nothing really different. WLM doesn't cause network problems as it only uses <0.5kb over 5 mins very little. Also the lag with WLM is FPS based. The cure? Minimize or close WLM its a known bug in THERE end. I still get the seriously high average pings of 200-400ms. I think do to the fact that I live in Edmonton...well from the server. Now I think the issue of the lag is because guild wars only sends about 3-5kb of data per second, maybe if it send a extra kb or 2 to confirm that things are where they are. Going from wireless to directly connected to my modem (by passing my router all together), it shaves off ~30ms...still not good enough. Gaile does the servers have some sort of a scaling program? As I think the issue is one server getting overloaded, and causing it to have a theoretical heart attack. Which creates the the lag as the server goes brain dead for seconds or more. As I notice after a error 7 I'm not connected to the same server (different IP). Also I notice I only get lag spikes in Alliance battles or another populated areas of people from around the world. Which makes me think why is the server forcing ME to connect to them rather then it being the hub? So many theries and so little answers XD. Dominator Matrix 20:21, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
As I am sure I've made everyone aware by now, I'm not a techie. :) However, I want to say that I am not at all sure that all those programs are, technically speaking, "the same." I've heard of significant issues with Kapersky, but not with, say, Norton, and I have used Norton without problems for years.

Been running Guild Wars in a barebones environment but still getting it. As I said to Support, yes, switching off my Avast and other stuff helped make things be a bit more steady but still getting these interesting spikes, still getting losses from the plaync servers etc. I'm in New Zealand, I ping the Europe address Support gave me and it gives, on average, nothing below a 400ms mark. Us servers, generally around 200ms. I still think there's stuff going on somewhere at the servers, or near them at least. But, getting there ^_^. 000.00.00.00 00:06, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
I have noticed, in my 3 years of playing GW, that a week or so before a monthly update is when there is increased lag with error 7's and such. Before and after an update, for myself I run lag free. Im no computer genius but I do know that uploads/downloads will cause lag. So maybe it's something to do with the updates? All I know that is right now I'm not experiencing any lag issues but about a week before next months update it will be lagtastic and barely playable again.--BabyJ 12:29, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
After turning off most of what I can in the background, and even dropping settings in game to laughable there is still lag, Pingplotter still showing packet losses (20%-100) and spikes on the Plaync servers which show up as Guild Wars throws it's toys from the cot. There's not much more I can give to Support in the way of logs and words as they're the same words I've expressed when starting the ticket. There is nothing more in the background I can turn off that wasn't there already (and running prior to now) when I started Guild Wars over 15 months ago (where I hardly ever got these kinds of issues.). 000.00.00.00 19:05, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

2gb mem total and a very good configuration that works perfect during week day's. It's simply impossible in-game at the moment. FPS is below 20 atm, ms average 322. It is so very nice to point out many players experiance the same lag and we feel a bit "neglected" as if we are talking nonsence and all is individual problems. News Flash: Points Distribution Issue

I learned this evening that there was a problem with the points distribution of October 9th. Our website programmer was able to retrieve a full list of the points that were not given in the October 9th distribution. Those points will be added to any points earned in this month's predictions and they will be given in one seamless batch when this month's points go live sometime in the first half of November.

There is no need to submit a support ticket about this matter; all points should be adjusted in the November distribution. Do keep in mind that you much pick up points each month, so even if you do not have points coming in November's distribution, be sure to visit Kun Shao to get the balance of your previous points, if you were missing any. That's right. If someone was unfortunate enough to experience a problem with both August and September points, he or she will be getting a windfall in the next distribution. We're very sorry for the problems, and the changes to the program that are being put in place in the next couple of months will hopefully make these issues a thing of the past.
I should make something clear: You do not need to make predictions in order to pick up your missing points. Even if you forget to predict this month, your missing points will be presented in the October point distribution, which will take place in the first week or two of November. Also, if you're curious about why we don't just add the points in the middle of the month -- perhaps in an emergency build or during a bug fix update -- well, we can't. If you are missing points in a certain month, you really need to follow up in that very month, because a set of points expires when the next distribution is made. (They do not accumulate and carry over.) So, only those missing points in August who didn't receive them in September's distribution will get them with their October points in the November distribution. And of course, those who were missing September points in the October distribution will receive them in the November hand-off. Those missing points for both August and September will get them in November, unless they picked them up sometime in September or October. And those who neglect to predict in October can still claim their missing points for September when they are added to the October point distribution that takes place in November.
Ok, I had waaay too much fun with that. *evil grin* (Seriously, though, if I confused anyone, please do ask and I'll answer the specific question.)
The fact is, players who are missing points for September -- who have not already picked them up -- should receive them in the distribution next month. Most August points were added in September. If the points were added in September, they must have been claimed by October 9th, when the new list went up. When you wrote Support with your concerns in August, the team did a thorough investigation of the issue. What they found is that the account you wrote about is directly connected to an RMT company. Accounts that are related to Real-money trading will be closed to protect the game economy and to prevent further abuses of the User Agreement. Brief Disconnect Today

I wanted to mention that if you were booted off the game today about 10:30 AM (around 17:30 GMT), the network team was alerted about it immediately and they've confirmed that we did experience a brief network issue. Enough of the sqabiling of the network issues. Its on her support page. The 33% ussally don't have a few good things to start with. 1) A badly maintained computer (disk clean up, driver updates, bios updates, defragmenting does wonders). 2) A not optimized network connection. (Vista does this by itself so if you have it move on). 3) If there using a wireless router, they maybe hogging the same channel with the neighborhood (E.G phones). 4) Bad Internet service provider. 5) More then 1,000km from the servers. 6) A old computer that probably barley meets the requirements to begin with. 6) Unknown virus/spyware/trojan. 7) More then one active anti-virus/anti-malware. The variables are to huge, we can't really expect the network team to fix every issue. To begin with most of it is not there fault. Things happen, and things get fixed. Sure, let's talk about those issues, the ones that a lot of people are calling "server issues" or "network issues." I hold a weekly meeting with members of the global Support Team, and as part of my role as Support Liaison -- you know, the communications "bridge" about support issues -- I've been pressing our Technical Support Team for the last few weeks to try to get information about reports of lag, disconnects, and other "network issues." I've been thinking "Where's there's smoke, there's fire," and I believe we have seen an increase in comments about such issues. The team reacts promptly and as fully as possible to such reports, but interestingly, over the last week the Technical Support Team received a grand total of ten tickets about lag, disconnects, or other connectivity issues. Ten! If this is such an issue, why isn't the team hearing about it? Why aren't they seeing tickets and getting follow-up system reports and other details?
Secondly, of the ten issues that were reported, the majority (perhaps all) involved internal issues related to the customer's ISP. For instance, there were a few tickets on 10/07 about issues that seem to have resolved about 10/11. To those who wrote to thank us for resolving the issue, though, we had to reiterate what we'd said earlier: The ISPs were the source of the problem and, thankfully, the cause of the fix. (It was mighty nice to get the kind notes, though! :) )
I understand some level of skepticism about responses. "Whenever I write about gameplay/network issues, Support tell me it's not them!" "My friend and I both had issues; it can't be coincidence, it must be ArenaNet or NCsoft." It's even human nature to believe that even if it is us, we'll try to shirk the blame. ;) I mean, you might think that it's standard operating procedure to try to put the blame on someone else: an ISP, the Internet backbone, a 'Net relay point, etc. But from what I've seen, the team members handling the tickets really sink their teeth into the task, and they really are open to the notion that the problem can have any cause, including our network, a specific data center, our authentication system, whatever. So if the problem is ours, I'd say the team would say so. (Earlier today, there were two problems: One was outside our network, one was a power issue within our network. We're taking half blame on those.)
So, here's the bottom line: We have people on staff -- a crack team of highly-trained professionals (God I love saying stuff like that!) -- whose sole job is to handle tickets and work with you guys on problems, maybe even provide you with occasional consultation on things like component upgrades and individual computer hardware issues. I really hope that instead of posting on a forum about the "horrible lag," players will contact the people who can actually do something about it: Contact support and see if the team can identify and help resolve the issue that you're experiencing.

Thank you Gaile :). You said exactly what I was trying to said but got to complicated on it. Just theres still an issue the reason why players don't send in the issues (I think anyways), is that theres no clearly posted information about the problem. I think another reason why support received so low of tickets as well its a long and complicated process the fix the issue. Easy fix slap a "We are currently experiencing issues with A isp, or B server". At the login screen would be nice. (Even though it will only be a heads up of who haven't had it yet, since you don't get sent to the login screen often after a network problem). Or a global message warning saying "People who have a or b isp maybe be experiencing issues". Update the error codes to say "Where sorry but we are currently experiencing a network issuing with the servers. Code X". Or "The network issues maybe related to your ISP. Please contact support or your ISP. Code Y". On the site there could be a panel that says "Current issues". It would be nice as then if we know that its not your end, we can't really scream at you but rather our ISP that would like to know about the issues. This might need EULA changes (I think), as you would need to know the host of the people experiencing issues (if you don't already have that. *Large brainstorm over*. Highly trained professionals who also makes mistakes - recalls the time Support was sure my issues were down to the fact I was playing via wireless, even though I stated clearly in my support ticket I had a wireless router but I was not connected via it. Then it was drivers that weren't updated. Then it was the anti-virus (which even when uninstalling it or fully formatting my computer and updating Windows and to the latest driver and only installing Guild Wars, then making sure nothing but the bare minimum was loaded in the background I still got it, and the program Support got me to use to test the route still showed issues at their end more than anyone else.
Its insulting sometimes when you contact Support and they say its your end, especially when your end hasn't changed in months (I defrag, update, remove old programs etc and so forth regularly. I also format my computer back to a clean state each month. I also have a computer setup that looks at Guild Wars requirements, points, laughs "ohhh, whos' the poor cousin!"). Its also insulting when Support gets you to do stuff (like downloading programs they don't support) which shows issues at their end and then still say its not their end and such things are perfectly normal. I'm sorry, but when the program(s) they get me to download starts screaming error messages at me and Guild Wars starts going quote unquote 'lagtastic' or at worst starts disconnecting me, I seem to think that there is something wrong at their end... but I am completely dumbfounded to take all this information and mass logs to Support to have them says its nothing (or just seemingly ignore it). I mean, I caught a large spike using their programs (I'll say their programs because they wanted me to have them) and it was dismissed relatively. Yes, any person -- highly-trained or not, professional or amateur -- can make errors. And it could be that the issues you've experienced have not been properly diagnosed. Or not. :)
As I'm sure you're aware, "lag spikes" are not necessarily rooted in the game. Lag spikes can be caused by any number of elements that run between your computer and the network servers. So while a player "sees" the lag in the game, it's not necessarily the game that is causing the lag, just like a flashlight isn't to blame if the batteries are weak. I've been told many times that Guild Wars uses computer resources in different ways than other programs and even other games. That unique (or at least unusual) utilization of resources can result in situations that appear to be game related but are, in fact, related to some of the elements you've mentioned: anti-virus software, various configurations (system, router, etc.), drivers, and so forth. And all that is decidedly not a dismissal or a diagnosis - that's just a bit of fact stating as background.
Why don't you provide me your Incident Numbers and I'll take a look at the full entries on this matter. I am not a TS person, but I'm here to help and I'd like to see the details of the issue(s) you're describing to see if I can assist in any way. We're proud of the fact that Guild Wars does a lot with medium-level systems, and doesn't require a screamin' dual quad triplet sextuplet maxi-core thingie! (I have to admit, I would really like to have a dual quad pro at home myself -- they're great machines!)

Gaile think you can try seeing if the team will make a GW.exe file for Linux and Mac? The current way to make it run requires a program that people have to pay for which kind of sucks in my opinion =D. I think you missed it =D, the really good programs cost money and in this time of economic struggle it's really hard to pay $50 for a program. I tried "wine" (turns Windows programs into Linux) seems to work for the most part but the only problem is it gets you pretty thirsty xD. I've noticed that the log-in menu has a glitch with Wine though; there's a corner that continues to blink; not a very big problem but enough to annoy me. The huge problem is the support, as you very well know; Support Team doesn't support Linux and Mac....bugs the heavens out of me when I need help and the only person I have to ask is Bob. Mr. Bob isn't part of Anet so he helps in his freetime which sometimes isn't convenient for people "like myself". I saw this one website that mentions that the support team would start implementing Linux and Mac but that was over a year ago when it was written, I don't really know if the website was right because I could not validate it. I play GW alot and now since I have Linux I would like to continue playing alot....look at my character "Capt Ruijiyo" (named after the NPC at Canthan New Year). When you speak of costs, costs apply not just to players like you and me, but to developers like ArenaNet. :) As far as I know -- and I've asked on behalf of Community (in the past) and Support (in the present) a few times -- we have no plans to offer a Mac or Linux exe in part because the costs exceed the overall benefit. Just as we don't try to customize our website for every single browser but instead focus on supporting those selected by the vast majority of user, we have no plans to turn our PC game into a Linux or Mac game. Well, off the top of my head, I'd say that we would all agree that it's important to prioritize things (indeed nearly all things) above tidying someone's hero page. :) For instance, since reports and issue tickets are in a queue and are viewed in the order received, Support would want to help those with an account dispute or a scam report before they address someone who wants this sort of service. Yet having such requests in the queue is going to slow down response time simply by the need to read them, even if they are set aside for later.
If we had an "abandon title" option, players could make the choice for themselves. However, as in the case of the abandon quest/mission option, I can almost guarantee that the function would cause people to write Support to ask the team to reinstate the title they accidentally dropped. And lastly, the decision to drop an account-wide title may be too drastic, as the player may decide to go for it later. To be honest I don't think the idea would be feasible, before even getting to the question of whether or not Support has time to deal with it on a case by case basis. My assumption is that the titles are merely reflections of accumulated points and to set them to 0 would mean erasing all those points that cause titles to show up (and we already know death count can't be reset to 0).
On the other hand I expect making titles disappear could be treated from a UI angle... Supposing we had another page we could open with a list of check boxes labelled "Display title X," "Display title Y," etc. That would give the player the capability to turn off unwanted eyesores. If it were a bigger deal that many other players wanted, then why not just have a button next to every title that says "Do not show this title on my Hero page"? Something that could be undone, for instance, by going into the options to show the title again if one chose to do so.

Character name Violation

Hello, long-time Guild Wars player here, and I have a rather severe problem and I can't contact support because I lost my PlayNC account info for reasons I'll leave undisclosed (here, at least). Long story short, I log in after a long hiatus to check and see if my characters had any presents and to join any arguments that might occur while I meander about (a small past-time of mine, I stay rather civil, mind you). However, when I logged in to my character, Rumpel Pimpskin, I find that someone reported him as having an "offensive" name. I won't go into how idiotic this sounds, but ANet is busting my balls saying I need to rename my character. I won't unless they just wanna be assholes about it. I've had this character for almost 2 years and never has anyone complained about his name (quite the opposite, actually). I'm sorry that you're upset about the name block. I seem to have to explain this on a regular basis, but I'll try again. Long Answer: We have hundreds of thousands of people playing in any given hour of any given day. There are well over 5 million Guild Wars accounts. People join the game from both genders, a wide variety of languages, and a large number of ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. The word "pimp" is obviously inoffensive to you; but then, judging from the language you used here, your standards of offensiveness and mine have a bit of a gap, and I'm not at all straight-laced. Read up. Think about it. :)
Names cannot be filtered; they're seen by all. So the standards for name blocks are higher than word blocks. Use the word "pimp" (in a context that itself isn't over the top) and I highly doubt you would be blocked. Use the name pimp, and yes, you're going to get blocked. I don't necessarily personally agree with some of the blocks that are placed, but as someone who wants to be "a good citizen of the game" and who wants to show respect to people who are more conservative about word use than I, I will support such blocks for the good of the game community as a whole.
Make good choices: Not only should you not use names that are obviously offensive, you shouldn't tread so close to the line with a name that -- while you find it amusing or clever -- someone else can find unpalatable. And please don't use as a defense "nobody noticed for two years." That's as pointless as saying, "But officer, I speed down this road every day, it must be ok!"
  • Longevity is not a guarantee of acceptability.
  • Not getting caught doesn't mean what you're doing is acceptable.
  • The time-out is short and there's no lasting penalty; rename the character and resume playing after the block expires.

I can understand that they have a lot to check, but still, that's a good deal of lag time, considering one of my friends came in with an unacceptable name and was blocked after 2 hours. You ask why it took so long for someone with an offensive name to be caught? Because we have hundreds of thousands of people playing at any given hour. Maybe no one reported the name; certainly we didn't see it. By the same token, as I said earlier, someone might drive over the speed limit several times before he/she gets a ticket, might shoplift a time or two and get by with it, or jaywalk and not get nabbed, or cheat on a test and not get busted. There's no certainty you'll get caught with any of those actions, but the preponderant chance is that bad behavior will catch up with you -- or the authorities will catch up with one's bad behavior. :)
There is no shelf life for offensiveness. The right to take action doesn't expire if someone manages to avoid getting caught for a certain number of hours, days, or years. A player with an unacceptable name may be caught within a few hours, within a few years, or, quite frankly, may never be caught at all. But we'll do our level best to keep the game world pleasant, and we'll action those we see or those whom player help us become aware of. Support does not block just for gold transfers that appear to be linked to RMT activity. They also block for the transfer of other goods when the transfer appears RMT-related. You're free to appeal, but since you have been reinstated after having been banned for RMT activity multiple times, and since you appear continue to play from an RMT location, I don't know that the appeal will be successful. As the Support Team has relayed to you, the account has been terminated due to involvement in RMT (real-money trading) activities. RMT companies do not deal only in in-game gold. We know that, and we track the exchange of other things to address the RMT issue. I asked Support to take a second look -- as I have done a few times in the past. The team was more than willing to do so, and they provided me with records that prove that the account (presumably you) was involved in item or gold sales. The characters on the account do indeed show they've been played a lot; they are not typical of characters on an RMT account. But high-level armor or titles doesn't mean that someone isn't involved with gold and item sales. There may have been a loan of ectos; I don't know about that. What is critical, though, is that there definitely was a delivery of goods through an RMT made by someone on this account.

Halloween Lag Spikes

Hey Gaile, I have been getting large lag spikes while playing this morning (I'm in Australia) and they seem to be persisting. I was enjoying the Costume Brawl but now I can't seem to be able to play much with the lag interrupting everything and now I'm stuck on loading screens. My internet doesn't seem to be having trouble doing other things - just with Guild Wars. I remember with previous festivals (Dragon Festival 07) lag had been a problem in some places. I'm worried I will miss out on the weekend fun and possibly the finale if it persists. Is there a known problem? 122.111.99.141 03:18, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm in New Zealand, having issues playing also, but this is nothing new. However I'm monitoring my connection (and have been for the last week or so) and I have been noticing that my connection is going through 4 asianetcom.net servers and 2 of them seem have spiked every now and then; sometimes will cause a bit of lag, other times it will cause me to disconnect. This has happened a few times today for me. Infact, most servers to the plaync.com servers and them included have had a few high spikes (increases in ms). Alert: Don't Use 8 Accounts on One PC (Guru-topic)

Alert! On guru is a thread from someone stating he uses 8 accounts simultaniously with one pc. HE states you can whisper hi on all the accounts. One account is a hacked account from one of my guildies. Due to the fact the threadposter mention to download software i urgely advise not to download this. He uses the hacked account to get respons.

I ask Arenanet and guru work together to have investigate this person. And try to find a way to nail him.

Anyone involved in account theft has his/her account terminated, once the facts are known and the theft is confirmed. And yes, the team is generally able to establish the primary account, and not simply take action on the stolen account. Server doing... ehhh WTF

[comes in with my most whiny voice] Gaile, the game's doing something really really dumb. I can't access character that were last logged out in my Guild Hall. Thats like half of them and my more played characters. I am also unable to travel from the "america districts" (the ones with 216 in the address) to "europe districts" (with 206 in the address) with any other character, I just get a code 007 message. This is just stupid.

[throws his toys from his cot] Is anyone else having difficulties or I am, for some reason, repelant to the Europe districts or something? I can move to every other main type of district: America, International, Asia but not Europe. This kinda blows, I'm literally unable to play with over half of my characters.

Actually, the support ticket is an on-going one from the 10/10 :P Its big, I feel sorry for the people reading it, sometimes I ask a lot of questions ^_^
I was about to walk away from my keyboard and curse the game when I got a 004 error (which I kinda went "aha!" so it might be your problem, not mine... so to speak) and then after that I could access my Guild Hall, though this accessibility has recently stopped again. Its just weird. Oh well, I got my survivor and main characters out before the landlord shut the doors again ^_^
This has actually happened to me before, but was specific, only stopping me from letting my main character go to the Hall, usually corrected itself quickly. Was weird, every other character could move around fine but him, now its everyone :(. Server Outage Earlier Tonight

I almost entitled this entry "This one was us" because we've had reports of lag and disconnects and the truth is they're usually outside our network. Tonight, though, around 9:00 PM Pacific time, we had a hardware failure that cause a brief (<10 minute) outage; this probably booted about 1,000 players out of the game.

I do not have the details of the referenced bit of chat, but I do know that I witnessed -- and heard about -- many instances of people going well and truly over the line in promoting their candidate of choice... or running down their candidate's opponent. Advocacy is ok, in limited measure. A few lines about politics wouldn't be objected to by most players, I'm sure, although this past week or so I've sure seen a lot of people saying "I play the game to get away, please don't bring RL politics here!" (I think many agree with that plea.)
Anyway, we've noticed more spamming lately because of politics, and we've seen and heard about a fair number of aggressive and unpleasant comments, including those containing racism, jingoism, whole-nation put downs, hate-speech, and more. The best way for any of these sorts of issues to be resolved is to refer the person directly to Support. There isn't much that can be gained by discussing (pleading/arguing/etc) such matters on a wiki page or on a forum, for Support is able and committed to getting players the appropriate information, and as promptly as possible.

Gotta say, when the American election was on it was crazy in Guild Wars, lot of comments flying left, right and centre. Lots of comments I'd consider a bit racist, lots of belittling comments etc and so forth. Toned down now with the election over but it was a party there on some many levels. Thankful these things only happen once in a while and I hope Support was overrun with a lot of emails and /reports coming in.
Though, I probably am in there somewhere. Not an American and expressed my view on Obama being better choice and got called many colourful names, even a terrorist lover, which was replied with a "but I'm not American" reply, which was over the top really and probably a bit 'racist' or something, but a lot of non-Americans point of view is that Americans (not all obviously, but maybe "America" since the government really doesn't represental all) are seen as the biggest terrorists in the world, but hey, we all see different. Some people get, quite frankly, pissed off with me, others asked for reasoning and had a nice discussion.

Accessing my access keys

I was just wondering... If i wanted to be able to get at my access keys (say i lost them or they got destroyed etc.) is there any way that i can get them? Hi Mashav. I don't think we can release this information under any circumstances because the access key information is part of account ownership verification. I also lost my keys. My only problem with my code keys is, I have to dang many and I have no clue which one goes to which account and a few are lost, I think. I have 4 accounts but for some reason I have enough keys for 3 of them. And I'm not real sure if the ones I have are a couple to one account, some for another, and a few for that one, and a couple for this one. AHHHH! Attack of the code keys! The nice thing is, we have the means to sort thing out for you. I tell folks "Keep all your keys, no matter what." So say you have trouble with one of your accounts. Send all the keys and just tell the Support folks: "Here are the keys I have, I'm not sure which apply to this particular account." We can pull all sorts of data -- believe me, by the time I get around to calling a player, I have so much data in front of me I have pages to scroll through in trying to resolve one of those escalated issues. But when we pull that data, it's really possible for us to say, "Ok, these keys go with this account, this other key goes there." And if it turns out that you're missing keys from the account in question, we'll let you know that so you can keep searching.
The value of having keys is that we know there are cases where people share accounts, and instead of just saying "Nope, can't tell who owns this, we're going to have to close it," we try very hard to determine actual ownership so that someone retains the account. Hi, Tesla. I am very sorry to hear that someone has had a bad experience with another player, and I am sure that the Support Team will help with this matter. Your friend should continue to try the PlayNC page to submit an official ticket, which is the best and fastest way to get help. I believe there were occasional issues with one of the providers into a data centers recently and that may have caused difficulty in submitting a ticket; but I saw an email today that indicates that the issue has been resolved.
We have a team of well over 50 people handling Guild Wars tickets of all kinds, and they need to do what they do. Each report needs to be submitted as a ticket so that it can be properly read, researched, routed, assigned, responded to, and archived. I do not get involved in individual research, investigation, and resolution unless the team feels it's appropriate to escalate the matter to me. Rather than being a place to accept individual issue reports, the Support Issues page allows GWW members to discuss broad issues such as policies and practices, and occasionally to pursue individual issues after they are in the system.
So please do ask your friend to continue to try to submit a ticket; I'm not aware of any issues that would prevent him being able to do so. Also, he should write himself because the team works best and fastest through contact with the individual(s) involved, rather than through a friend. If the system is confusing for him, he could call NCsoft and the team will start a ticket for him. Customized weapons

So why would anyone be offering such items for sale... unless it was to scam an unsuspecting or uninformed buyer, such as a new player? New Phishing Attempt

Support has been made aware of a new phishing attempt. Someone is sending out bogus emails demanding that players "verify their account" by providing all sorts of private information, including game password, home address, etc. The email threatens closure of the recipient's Guild Wars account if the player does not provide this information with 24 hours.

These are not legitimate emails. For one thing, we would never use a Hotmail address. And of course, most importantly, if we needed verification, we would request it via a much more secure manner. Please do not respond to these emails and pass along a word to your friends to avoid them, too. If you ever have concerns, drop a line to support or post a question here before acting upon anything that looks even slightly suspicious. Hi I run a guild which contains just family members, i know it sounds selfish but we have fun and enjoy our own company though maybe we might expand it to include "outsiders" one day :P

Now heres the interesting bit, My son has had one of his accounts hijacked, stolen or whicher ever way you may look at it and is now being used by someone else. He raised a ticket with arenanet concerning this stating he is the legitimate owner of this account and can produce the cd box set with all the 25 digit cards and purchase receipt.

Instead of suspending the account to find the legitimate owner and confirm who owns what, his only reply from arenanet was you must of give him it...end of ticket. I find it hard to believe that this is the only answer that can be given considering we as a family play this game for fun and have not intention of giving any of our accounts away.

So in light of this beware of any scams through emails or otherwise cos arenanet realy dont care about you accounts anyway, they aleady have the money for it. --Sir Spended 21:56, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Try re-sending the ticket again, and if that fails try asking Regina for intervention. As long as you have the box, keys, and ideally proof of buying the game, you are considered the owner of the game, and ArenaNet should be able to give it back. The answer you received makes me think that you failed to explain the real problem somehow.
Either way, you are informed almost everywhere that you should NEVER share your account information, and that arenanet (besides support through the guidlwars.com site) will never ask for it. If your "son" somehow gave his information away (be it to a friend, a trial key buyer, gold seller, or downloaded something that had a keylogger on it), it's not really Anet's fault.--Fighterdoken 22:05, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
Yep everything was explained and kept it as simple as can be to avoid confusion. He has not given his details away it was a just a case of he went to login and his account was disabled for him so he logged in with his other account and the person with his stolen account was online.
He attempted to contact the person but everytime he sent a message when he/she was on that person logged off, even when i attempted to contact him/her the same thing happened so if this person had this account legit then why not reply anyway.
And yes i know it is not anet's fault and i never said it was but considering the circumstances the reply from them is utterly deplorable seeing as my son has all the proof that the account is his and the other person has nothing. Then i feel like a lot of people who have been wronged and had their accounts hijacked obliged to raise this issue so others are aware of the shortfall of online game support.
Its all very well bleating the keep it safe and dont tell anyone which is the obvious but if the internet was so safe to use 100% then no spyware or antivirus software would be required to protect you from such things that can steal your id's. Age has never been an impediment for people doing silly stuff, specially over internet; accounts don't get stolen magically, there is always something "silly" happening in the background, and people usually has problem recognizing what was that "thing" that they should not have done.

First, you've come to the right person but not to the right page. Therefore I have moved this thread to this Support Issues page and reformatted it to ease readibility. Thanks for your understanding with the change. I ask for:
  • A ticket number (incident/report number from the ticket)
  • Details from the person directly involved (particularly if he's nearly 30 ;) ) including times, dates, characters involved, etc.
  • Exact quotes from the Support response.
What you're suggesting is that the team is disinterested in resolving this issue. I know that is not the case; we all are very interested in helping resolve issues of this sort. Resolving account thefts is one of our highest priorities because we all care deeply for our players and want to do what's right for them when wrong has been done to them. I don't think I've every seen Support say, "you must have given this account away." I have occasionally seen them say, "We have records that show that you gave this account to someone else (by providing your user name and password)."
I see issues like that every day, where the logs reveal someone giving his user name, password, and in some cases his home address and phone number (!) to an account thief. People can be tempted by fake offers for platinum, items, power leveling, extra gold drops, or a special mini. (I've seen all those phony "offers." :( ) No one legitimately can offer those things -- no third-party program delivers them -- but we hear of people being tempted by them every day. The thief comes up with a cockamamie story about how he'll place those benefits directly on the account, gets the credentials, and bye-bye account. I dealt with a ticket yesterday where a 12-year-old boy was offered those things and, yes, turned over his account to a thief. :( It breaks my heart to see that!
If your son still have questions, I encourage him to refresh his ticket (not by making a new one but by responding to the existing one) to get details. If you submitted a ticket on his behalf, he, as the account holder, should be the one to contact Support, because due to our care with account security and with player privacy, we want to deal with the account holder (except in cases of a minor).
If your son wishes to provide me with the 12-digit Incident / Report / Ticket number (usually near the top of the response) I will look into the matter as well. I do need some clarification from him (chat records, actual context of Support's response, etc.). I can probably gain that directly from the Support ticket. Ok Gaile i just got an update from my son; apparently he has had a reply to his ticket after i encouraged him to continue. He has been give a 5 day waiting period to see if the Hacker/Thief/Lowlife can come up with the serial key and purchase receipt (which obviously he can't) after which time i presume he will be re-united with his stolen character.

Character Deletion

Gaile I also have a question regarding account hack or character deletion mistake from server. About 5 months ago I was playing my necro then my connection timed out, when I logged back in ALL my characters were deleted. The reason why I didn't tell anyone was because I really didn't care...it's just a game, you know? Besides all my old characters were mistakes. I would like to know the answer to this question too. The same thing happened to a dear friend of mine. He lost all his beloved characters that way. his account is 3 years old but at that time support wasn't able to "support". Account restore is not possible in GW (still hope for it in GW2). I agree it is just a game :(. But to lose characters carefully created and enjoyed for so long... The answer would maybe console a bit since not knowing what happened is the biggest mistery. I once logged in myself and had no characters, logged out immediatly, rebooted my pc, cleaned the secondairy directory that was created somehow and logged in with all where it should. I have never heard of someone losing his characters except in cases where they were deleted by himself or another person. Anyone who accesses an account can of course delete the characters and that is the only way that I've ever seen deletions take place. There are so many players of Guild Wars, if there were some sort of glitch or bug, I am confident that we would have seen incidents on a broader scale.
If these are matters that were reported to Support -- and they certainly should have been! -- I'd very much like to see the ticket/incident numbers so that I can read the history of the incidents. I am not sure when, how, or why Support "wasn't able to support" and I'd like to know more about that, too. It's true that we cannot restore accounts through roll-backs or resets because we would be required to roll back the entire game and everyone's account. My guess would be, you get kicked off due to you can't have 2 of the same account logged in at the same time. While you try to connect, the person who has hijacked your account deleted your characters. You connect back, and boom gone. Virus/or just a bad password could be the problem. Account problem

I tried to contact support as i forgot my plaync master account password and they ask me to provide some info including guild war cd key and stuff i did that and then my account was being block as they claim that 2 or more party can verify claim to this account??!! I never share my password or account info with anyone and i doubt i've been hack. i ask them to send me some prove of what they mean by "2or more party can verify claim to this account" and so far after 24 hours i still haven't gotten any reply. I've also send an email containing photo of me with my guild war games and photo of my cdkey and my malaysia citizenship photo and my driving license. EOTN and nightfall campaign i bought from an online store which save the cdkey in my online purchase account(i also send my username and password for that online store account so that the support staff can verify i bought the game) The reason i ask for my plaync master account username and password is that i wanted to ask support why i didn't get the fire imp summon stone when i type /bonus and find it hard to contact support without the plaync master account otherwise i never use it. And now my account is block or ban T_T. I want to play my guild warrrr!!!! It cost me half a month of my salary to purchase all the campaign except the bonus mission pack. It is a little hard to tell if you can predict. I just tested, and placed everyone into the spots and only then noted I could not hit a "save" button to hold the predictions. :)

Hi Gaile, my friend has aproblem. He was spamming people, like an idiot (he isn't the smartest person alive). But, anyways, after a while a player came up to him name Prince Achillles. He said that he works for guild wars and that my friend has to give him 15k in 72 hours or be banned for 2 months. This doesn't make sense to me, why would he ask for my friend's money. My friend is always short on cash so I'm paying it. I want to be there when the money is exchanged. Is there any way for us to know if he really works for guild wars? Yep, it's a scam, the Conduct Breaches and Outcomes page on the main website only mentions account marks, temporary blocks and account termination. IMO you should tell your friend to contact support and report the scammer, preferably with the date and time of the incident. Actually after talking with the people my friend scammed and listening to the dude he works for play nc and asked for the 15k to give it back to the people scammed. ok everyone I left out alot of details when I told the story. It was not a scam several people who were scammed thanked me and told me they got the money. Now the whole story. Prince works for nc, he is a gm but doesnt have their prevleges. That is why he couldn't prove it. My friend scammed several people for 15k total. I earned the money and talked with several of the people who were scammed plus Prince. He is part of a new nc group that is working to help people who were scammed. He asked for the money as part of his job, he had to give the money back to those scammed. Everyone got their money back and my friend wont't get banned. I lost 15k, but I'm happy I took this risk. Many people were helped. Thanks everyone for trying to support me, but it was not a scam and now it is over and I'm happy. the case is closed and u have the story. Of course the people you gave money are happy. I've never, ever heard of NCSoft having a GM group that goes around asking for people to give money back. Besides, even if you did give them their money back, your friend still scammed people and got away with it without consequence. I also find it hard to believe that this "Prince" would say, "Oh, I can't actually prove it because I don't have ArenaNet GM privileges, so you're just going to have to believe me." That's a terrible way to run a business and extremely unprofessional. Now they've likely scammed you out of money, and with you being so happy to "co-operate," they won't be reported. Your friend might have scammed them, but I have a feeling this Prince was pretending to be a NCSoft employee, which is a breach of conduct in itself and should be reported. Kokuou,I appreciate what you are trying to achieve but some people just dont want to learn. All of us wiki-veterans know that what he's talking about is utterly ludicrous and that is it much more likely that a friend of those who were conned in the first place, just conned the 15k back to return to those people. We all know their is no such Anet team but if ranger wants to believe that, let him. Next time any of us are low on cash though it seems to be an open invite to message him and say "I'm a GM but I have no proof, give me money", maybe he'll learn in time. Also just for the record I've done something similar to this myself, when i had 4 accounts a friend of mine got conned out of 105 ectos for 105 mursaat tokens before the update which switched their art work. Thus I made a few vague threats to the conner without ever actualy claiming to be an employee of anet but implying it strongly and as proof when he tried to block me repeatedly, i just remade the charecter on a different account. Ultimatly I got the 105 tokens switched back with the ectos and all was good in the world, that doesnt however mean that i was part of an anet task force and that I didnt in essence "trick" the person into giving the stuff back. Yeah, its me Prince Achillles. My account just got suspended for impersonating an employee of Anet and NCsoft, and I just wanted to let you all know that it was completely and totally worth getting back at a scammer that scammed my brother. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.............SCAMMERS DESERVE EVERYTHING THEY GET AND THAT'S THE TRUTH. If you have ever been scammed, I know you would have done the same if it had been you. And to actually straighten the story out so there is no misconception, Devils Assassin X IS the scammer (portal ranger conveniently left his name out of the article) and for the record has felt no repercussions for his actions. I have a screen shot of the confession that has been filed and guess what, his account is fully intact and untouched. You tell me that it's fair for my account to get suspended when in fact I was bringing justice to a little twerp that made a killing off people who had nothing to do en lieu of his adolescent actions. So, I took it into my own hands to punish his @$$, and unfortunately Portal Ranger took the fall for this little punk. Me and Portal Ranger are on good speaking terms and I have returned half of the money to him in respect to the idea that he did nothing wrong. I realize why my account was suspended, and by legal documentation Anet and NCsoft had the right too. However I have also filed a formal complaint through PlayNC, and if Devils Assassin X's account is not suspended or banned for these actions I will pursue this issue legally (as I have provided the screen shot of his confession). It also helps that I have access to their entire support system (powered by Right NOW) and I will see that it is filed and followed up correctly. Well, I do have a few thoughts on this:
  1. This page is a resource for players -- and clearly you are aware of it. On this page, you can contact me directly in order to pursue issues of a support nature that you feel need review, intercession, advocacy, or even just another set of eyes on a specific problem. But instead of using this legitimate resource, you stole from another player. Now, you may call it "justice" but in fact it was theft. For as we're taught as children, even if you were trying to steal from a guilty party "two wrongs do not make a right." And, in fact you did not steal from a guilty party; you took an innocent party's goods. :(
  2. Your scammed; you stole. Why give Portal Ranger back only half of what he gave you? He acted in good faith, he tried to help the situation and the people involved. What possible justification do you have -- even in your personal sense of "justice" -- to keep a single gold piece belonging to Portal Ranger? A scam, by any other name, is still a scam. Keeping half the gold is just wrong.
  3. How do you know the account of the person you allegedly reported is intact? How would you be certain he was not given a suspension?
  4. You claim access to our support system. Knowing the name of software hardly indicates access. Excuse my skepticism, but after all else you've said and done I'm going to request proof. Please give me the final post in this incident: 081031-000160.
  5. Anyone can "pursue a matter legally" at any time; that is your right. But "I'm going to sue you" is meaningless. The only thing that matters is, will you prevail? :)

I performed my own justification and it worked, bottom line. An illegitimate player screwed people over and a poor sap took the fall for his a$$hole of a friend. I smell a pot calling a kettle black. Prince, your initial post was rude and condescending. It was also immature. "I'm going to sue you" or any such phrasing is petty, especially if you intend to do so after having confessed to be in breach of the EULA etc. In case you were wondering, that "contract" does have legal power these days. There was a case involving Blizzard (yes, the WoW company) and its EULA recently and guess what? Blizzard won, and the losing party ended up having to cough up damages. You might want to rethink your earlier threat, because honestly you haven't got a leg to stand on.
Gaile is absolutely right about being skeptical. As Support Liaison one of her tasks is to make sure that Support issues are handled correctly, and it falls to the Support team in its entirety to resolve in-game injustices. It is not up to players to distribute their own form of justice. Ever. I'd hate to see the mess that would result from any game being run that way. So even though you thought you were doing the right thing, you were wrong. Full stop. Just because you don't like having this pointed out to you does not mean it's not true.
In my experience, Gaile has always been very friendly and very helpful where Support issues are concerned. Yes, she is skeptical. No, this is not unprofessional. In fact, it is very professional. If someone like Gaile believed everything any given person would post here, all the time, I don't think Guild Wars would be a better place for it. Gaile being skeptical about the post of a confessed scammer (yes, scammer, because that's what you are, and as far as I'm concerned you're little better than any other scammer) makes perfect sense to me.
Gaile has offered to help sort out this matter, even after your blatantly rude post. She may be skeptical, but that doesn't mean she will not look into things fairly. Your refusal to provide additional details that she requested doesn't work in favour of your credibility, at all. Your attitude is puerile at best. You're not looking for justice. You're not looking to have this issue resolved properly. You're just here to troll now.
So as far as I'm concerned, there are two options for you: you can either make another polite and respectful post, preferrably with an apology to Gaile, and ask her to help you after all. I'm sure that with a proper apology and the appropriate details, Gaile would be professional enough to look into it for you. If that's not your cup of tea, I suggest you take your trolling to some dark little corner that's not on the wiki and keep it there, while you stare at a ban that may never be lifted.

I imagine that the vast majority of those reading this thread will agree I greatly exceeded both the bounds of acceptable presentation and the normal standards of professionalism in my reply. It seemed appropriate to this case; I believe it to be true in nearly all cases. Or do you argue that players impersonating employees is a good thing? That players taking "justice" into their own hands is appropriate? That doing so is fine no matter the collateral damage to other players? Would you truly argue that extracting "payment" through bogus claims and overt intimidation is acceptable? That causing distress to other players is fine, as long as you achieve your own goals?
For from what I've learned in early research, this whole issue may be related to the non-payment of 2,000 gold for a run. Is that truly the matter on which this revolves? If so, how does extracting 15,000 gold -- from anyone -- seem "justified?" Compound interest? A "penalty fee" on top of that which you are not authorized to collect? And, further, how do you "justify" keeping half of that gold when you know, now, that it did not come from the player you were trying to intimidate?
Again, stating the name of our software is not proof that you have access. I will be bold: You do not have access. I ask you respectfully to prove otherwise, by all means! (And if you think tracking views is going to reveal something, so playing our game.)

This whole thread reminds me of something what happend 1year ago it was cantha new year and I went to Shing... monestry and someone wispered me. I stole his kanufang and if I didnt give it back he would report me and get me banned. But I never traded with him didnt know him and hadnt stolen any minipet ever. Look for the "Ask a Question" tab (usually near the top of the page), create a support account (usually takes just a minute or two, if you don't already have one), and then request information on your account suspension. Hi Gaile, I've been appealing a block account that i got for spamming. It just seems everytime i apeal it the GMs just move me over to a new department. I have been playing GW for about a year and a half and just dont want to have to lose time i've spent playing on random moving. I was blocked with 3 other members and 2 of them have already been unblocked from appealing. We were recruiting in LA on Firday (9th January) and YaRR were in the district. In fairness i shouldn't have said the recruitment message as much as i did but then on Sunday night right in the middle of cartography im pulled out of Guild Wars and cannot do anything besides Appeal for a ban thats longer then im told is given for a second block. It is meant to be 47-55 hours i believe and seeing as i served 71hours for a previous ban i feel that its not really right. Hope you can help meUser:Ashanti

We have no blocks of 47-55 hours. If you had a previous ban in recent weeks, the current block would be considerably longer than the 72 hours you previously served. If you did not have a recent mark on your account, then the block would be 72 hours. The team tries to be kind about the blocks for spamming; they do not action an account for occasional repeated messaging. If you have not been unblocked, I would say it's because (1) you had a previous recent block for the same issue and did not learn from that, and/or (2) the incidents were so grievous that the team cannot, in good conscience, remove the block.
I am not going to intercede in this -- the team will let you know the outcome of your appeal, but keep in mind that the successful appeals of others in your guild may be related to their offenses being fewer, or to the fact that they didn't have previous marks for the same issue. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 22:10, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Since a few months my old email account (which is my GW account) has become unusable due to us changing internet providers. It has been deleted :\. This is pretty annoying as I can't make predictions and can't get emails from ANet. Is there any way that my account email could be changed?

Hi Mini. You cannot change your game user name (that is, the email address that you use to log into the game). This is something that was in the works a couple of times, but I believe it was found to be more complicated than originally believed and quite honestly I don't know if that option will ever be enabled. However, you can edit your account information in the game (see the log-in screen) or in the PlayNC system, depending on whether your account is bound to PlayNC or not. (If it is bound, you must make the chances in PlayNC.)
We don't send emails, as a general rule. The only thing that we would email you would be the newsletter and you can opt in to receive the newsletter, or change the address to which it is sent, on this page.

You can ask for a re-submittal of your registration email, but if your email is inaccessible that won't help you, I can sure understand that. I think you should ask Support for assistance -- I know they can make a change. Yes, we are aware of the problems. Specifically, I have reports of issues involving a drop of about 6,000 players around 10:55 AM Pacific, and another a similar number (hopefully not the same ones!) 40 minutes later. The team has contacted one of our providers -- the source of the issues -- and they are working to correct the issue. I cannot say for certain if the same provider problem is related to the earlier issues, but I suspect that may be the case.
I am going to clip some of the player comments from that forum thread and send them to our Network Operations Center folks (who are on board 24/7) and the internal team, as well. I agree -- this is a critical issue and I know several people are working directly on this even as I write. I just got another note from the Network Operations Center, and they report a minor outage. It's more than an individual issue, I have the same problem too, as well as others, some who have posted here: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10343650 I am having to use a proxy site to access the wiki. Logging into the game is normal, using the official US web site and wiki and rss feeds are being blocked. I have flushed the cache, deleted cookies, used Firefox, Internet Explorer, Epiphany, and Opera, all are unable to access those 2 sites. They can all access other sites normally. I don't think we "ban" ISPs from accessing our website -- I'm not even sure that is possible. :) I do note in the forum thread that someone tried to submit a report to Support about this and did not get a response. That is very unusual -- we send an automatic response to let people know the channels are clear and to inform them they'll be hearing back from a team member as soon as possible. NCsoft reports that they occurred once in the past, with City of Heroes, and it was related to the ISP doing something wonky. (My word, not theirs. :) ) They will research, as will the web team. I have a question you may be able to answer. I know about the auto-ban guild wars has (or had) for people who trade 100k vs nothing. A friend recently gave me 100k, and did not get blocked, and I was curious. The support system doesn't have auto-bans. The system has a sophisticated means of flagging accounts for review, but account terminations are placed by human beings who look at accounts from more than 20 different data points before placing a block. (These data points are reviewed and adjusted frequently to keep "false positives" to an absolute minimum.) To SaphyreRose: It's not hard. Some basic stuff, choose function over fashion, collector weapons go up to max, and can be free, by collecting the required trophies. Collect all the "garbage" drops from killing uglies and sell to merchant, you can identify white drops and increase their merchant price by a small amount, etc. Save crafting mats for armor crafting rather than buying from merchant. Sell "hot" items on the first market, buy back on the third or fourth market (i.e. The fourth year mini-pets will sell for a fair amount when they come out, several months later they can be bought back at a fraction of the cost you sold it for). Then there is the favorite of everyone, repetitive farming... High end power-selling is another way. There is only so much you need, the rest is just fluff. Drakora 20:36, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
The secret is you tap into your inner greed, fabricate an outright lie and then use that lie to leverage the greed of another unsuspecting player into handing over their account. From there you steal everything they have and wave goodbye. Please note that very few legitimate players will have that kind of money and even fewer will make offers to give it away like that. It's a scam, plain and simple. Nothing more, so don't believe that the scammer indicated in those screen shots actually has those assets, because the chances are that the person probably doesn't. ;)

You'd probably be best asking this question to Gaile, as she's the Support Liaison. Also, just because there is a filter, it doesn't give you a license to spam. The filter is there as a safeguard. Recruitment is not the problem, not at all. The problem arises from frequent, repeated messaging. Spamming is placing a repeated message in a district. And by "a lot," I'd say that's probably more than, say, 3 or 4 messages, but that's just my own appraisal, not an official stance. It's tricky, because you want to catch people as they come and go, I do understand that. But on the other hand, those folks who are in town don't want to keep seeing the same message over and over again in All Chat. Guild tab staying blank

Hi!

On Dec 14 after leaving my guild to join a new one, I accepted the invite, but nothing happened despite clicking "Accept invite" multiple times. Then I relogged and opened my Guild tab to see if I had joined. It was blank! I had no tag or cape either, and I guessed that it was simply guild database server lag causing this. After waiting for several hours, relogging, restarting internet and such I made a support ticket. The person who invited me to the guild could read under "Guild history" that I had joined the guild, but I was nowhere to be found in the roster! It didn't say I had left the guild either.

Almost a week later with no signs of update from ANet's side I'm now writing this as nothing has changed. I changed computers, got a mate from US to log in to the account, received several guest invites that I don't get the usual notice of - when they try teaming up with me and manually porting there it can't either, found out that despite having no tag or cape, inviting me as a member to other guilds fails with the message I am in a guild, and even attempting to create a new guild myself causes an error. As a GvG'er this is a quite annoying issue, as it leaves me unable to play and even attend in the snowball AT's that I had planned to :(

Hi. I have not seen anything from our Network Operations Center, nor from our internal IT Team about this. As a player, I know that events bring out a lot of people, and I do generally see a bit more lag -- or at least think I see a bit more lag (my ISP isn't the best) -- when I'm playing. However, we have a lot of servers, and we're not trying to squeeze more than they should hold as some sort of economy measure. :) This means if there are incidents of this kind, things aren't as they should be. Have you submitted a support ticket about this? I don't really want to raise an alarm with the teams unless I know there are tickets on record to which I can direct the team's attention. Guild Wars really does need a better report system. The current system requires you to target them and select report. But most of the people who should be reported leave the town before we can report them! Cant you allow reporting to be used anywhere at anytime by anyone? You can also type /report and their Nickname and it'll also work (like "/report Burning Freebies") but yes, most people leave their districts before and human has a chance to react. The system is probably their so you can't baselessly report anyone you want. You're right, it's frustrating to find someone, tag 'em, hit /report, choose a reason, and find they've left the district. I've been there/done that myself. But here's what I do. When I hit /report, if I get the "That person must be in your district in order for you to report them" message, I have the name in my cache and I cut and paste it into a ticket and submit that way.
I've asked about cross-district reporting. There are concerns about abuse of the system (social engineering, harassment), it's true. Plus, enabling that system would also take programmer time. However, this is something the team said they will consider for the future. Kick System and more accurate Restore Connection

Hey GG, i have been seeing more and more people, leeching or being rude and scamming in runs or groups. I think that a Kick System would be good, basically my idea is, X player is being rude, and player Y is also being rude, while the player Z is trying to scam (not paying). The group has 8 people, but they can't do anything, and the runner says he will leave if the last guy doesn't pay. So, here's where the Kick system makes presence. It allows the "good players" to vote to kick player X and/or player Y and/or player Z. This can sound weird and not accurate, but actually if the 5 good players vote to kick player X while the other two don't, he gets kicked and goes back to the last visited town. So, if most players votes to kick a player, he will get kicked, no need for the other two to vote, as it will be the same if they are like from the same guild and are both scamming, etc. It will also work if only the party leader could kick, but that is inaccurate because people can actually pay and the leader kicks them after paying, so i guess a "majority of votes" would work good. The problem with this, is that it can easily be abused. Player A, Player B, and Player C are in the same guild. They decide to do a mission and on their way there they pick up Player X. I have mentioned the disadvantages of a "kick system" quite a few times in the past, and King struck on the major drawback. Personally I'd like to believe that there are far fewer people who'd abuse the system than people who would use it fairly. One of the reasons why I stopped playing with random groups is because in most cases there would be a leecher, or an annoying little prat who'd spam team chat / our radar. Usually you're well on your way and happy to finally be getting somewhere, so it's too tedious to start all over. (Especially because /resign only works when ALL players use it.) An ability to kick that player would have been perfect, and certainly would have improved the gaming experience. Instead, since no such feature existed, I've seen other players ragequit over it, which usually ended up leading to a team's failure at a mission. GW is set up for team play, so it's not strange to want better support features in the game for it. The gameplay experience is unfortunately affected by the occasional bad egg, and usually filing a support ticket is too little, too late. You still have to start over Mission X, or had to put up with the abuse of Player Y for too long just to get something done. Pyron has suggested a useful solution to one of the /kick issues, so I'm sure that a feasible system could be worked out. It all sounds good until you're the one that gets kicked for absolutely no reason. To quote Dr. Cox on Scrubs "People are bastard coated bastards with a bastard filling!" You can't regulate that very well, just as it's hard to regulate the leechers and the agro-meisters. Actually, what is needed is a support ticket, as the poster has been informed. The only way that the issue can or will be addressed or resolved is via a support ticket. So, I'm trying to have a meaningful conversation with some people in Ascalon when, wouldn't you know, about 20 guild recruitment msg's pop up. Could I get banned for reporting these people for spamming every 10-20 seconds? Trade Scam

Is the trade scam, where a player will repeatedly change a trade first with the real item and then later with a fake look alike item, a bannable offence? What you describe is absolutely a scam. If it can be established that it took place, that person will be actioned by the Support Team. I strongly encourage you to fill out a ticket -- it only take a few minutes and removing people like that is very helpful to the overall community. Can you please change the in game reporting menu for scamming to allow for reporting of people who have left the district? A lot of bots these days will advertise they are selling CD Keys but will leave a district before you can finish typing their intentionally long and difficult to type names. I have a request in for cross-district reporting, but there are concerns and issues with it on a few different levels, so it remains to be seen if that can/will come into being. In the meantime, the team has told me that in-game /reports for scamming are not nearly as effective as the website support (ticket) system. This is because scamming is difficult to prove and the player being able to give more details than just a name -- like where you are, what happened, the character names involved, etc. -- will help the team nail more scammers than an in-game report, whether in the district or outside of it. IOW, it's always preferable to use the website link for scamming over the /report option. Leeching Issues

Hello Gaile. I've been playing Guild Wars for well over 2 years now. After playing PvE for a long time I'm absorbed in PvP. My problem is in Fort Aspenwood. I've been playing on the luxon side for a few weeks now and I must say, 75% of the time there is at least one leecher. I'm not totally sure what can be done about all of them considering many times you don't get enough people that take the time to report the leechers. I played a match a few minutes ago that had 3 leechers (from the same guild!) and that just pushed me over the edge. The fact that you don't need a group and that you got large amounts of faction there make it leecher heaven. Guild Wars has been my favourate game for such a long time, but every time I try to play my favourate competative mission, I end up getting so angry over all the leechers that I just quit. I'm dissapointed that I've been looking around in stores for other MMORPG's (too cheap to pay for WoW). I'm not completely sure if you can do anything to help but I just needed to voice my opinion somewhere. The only solution I can think of that is better than the current one is maybe having players type a random given phrase before entering the battle, kind of like the thing you have to type out before you make an account on a website. If the players down't type it in a certain amount of time, the battle starts without them. Thats all I can think about and thanks so much for reading my big rant. Merry Christmas! -- DoD

I guess the answer is: Players need to help. There's a system, and it only takes a few reports to make a "leeching" report stick. But we need a number of reports rather than basing all actions on a single report in order to prevent abuse of the system by fake reports. If players can't be bothered to help with a report then I don't know what else to suggest. :( (Certainly it is not feasible or even possible to put staff members in each instance to observe, as has been suggested in the past. That would be a huge waste of resources on both a personnel and financial level.)
My suggestion is that you tell your fellow AB team members, "ArenaNet really does read the reports and they will take action of these leechers, if we all do our part and hit /report when we spot a leecher." Hi Gaile. I'm also having some issues with this. Playing in Fort Aspenwood, I noticed that most of the time there's at least one leecher on the team, but no one else reports him/her. Even after telling people how leechers are a problem, telling people to report them, showing how we lose because of the leechers...No reports.
This isn't anything Arena Net can solve, unfortunately, but my issue is something slightly different: after noticing how the /report system often doesn't work, I decided to submit support tickets through the Support section of the site. However, a GM replied to me that the leeching system is automated, so there's nothing they can do to leechers despite my ticket. IMO, this is a problem; if the /report system doesn't work and submiting support tickets also doesn't work, we're left without any way to punish leechers. Erasculio 23:47, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

European Guild

I am in a fairly high ranked GvG guild and we have a problem. Our caller is on a European account. He did this because of back when which area you were in mattered but when they took away the feature to change back he was stuck there. This means we have 7 American players and 1 Euro. So, when we fight a Euro team we are stuck on European servers. This means increased latency for everyone on our team which means we can barely interrupt 1 second casts. I was wondering if you can do ANYTHING about this. I know there are quite a few American guild that have this problem and I think it would help Guild Wars as a whole if you helped the American PvP community. Ok, in the case of guild resets, we're not able to reset guild territories (or rename guilds), so the only options are to (1) continue as is or (2) recreate the guild and start over. I need to clarify.The problem is not with the territory. The problem is that he is on a European account which means if we fight a euro team there are 9 euros and 7 Americans which almost certainly means euro servers. Players can reset their territories within their individual game accounts, but whether that would effect on what servers a guild match is played is something I do not know for certain. Not sure that's entirely fair as a system. Any sort of random area should be just that: random. It shouldn't be synchable, but it shouldn't discriminate against certain guild tags either. If you're in a big guild that plays a lot of RA, there's a fair chance you'll end up in a team with a guildie even without synching it. Second of all, I am very confuse and shocked that the dev team does not consider sync an exploit and cheat, did the design/dev team intended for RA/SA/FA/JQ to be sync-able? Why was the name Random Arena used. Why was SA/FA/JQ although does not contain the word "Random" using the Random Arena join battle system without letting players form team first? What is the purpose of winning 10 (might have been change) wins to get pass Random Arena as a Random team and proceed to Team Arena? What is the purpose of Team Arena then if Random Arena is meant to be sync-able? What do you tell the players who joins random groups, after possibly 50 bad groups finally gotten into a decent group and upon the 9th wins they get wipe by a sync group? (50 bad groups might be a bit of an exegeration) Please, I like to know. Thank you for your time. somehow the siggy is not working yet again.
Let me ask another question: A sync team that has been playing together and knows how to coordinate with the rest of the team up against a randomly form group of possibly no healers, players that brings bad build, players who lag, players who leech, players who wants to play but have no idea how to play well, and any possible RANDOM "mishaps" is not an exploit or cheat? As I mentioned, I checked again with the team, and the answer remains: Syncing is not currently considered an exploit or a cheat. The team does understand that syncing frustrates some players and that some of them would like syncing to be addressed either through a change in game mechanics that prevents it, or by ruling it a disallowed gameplay factor, in which case Support might be asked to action accounts of those involved (if it were even possible to verify that). Thanks Ms Gaile, love it when there's an answer to question that's been asked, I've been asking this for ages, this is the first time I have some sort of a real answer, see the above reply before this one, need anymore proof that players sync? read forums, they practically flaunt it at your face on top of the frustration they added in Random Arena, as if getting a decent group isn't hard enough already. One can even find guide on forums on how to sync. Syncing should be removed by adding in a random wait time for RA. Don't display the timer. The reason people who sync like it is because it makes RA so much easier, when playing against an actual random team, or to a lesser extent, they want to PvP with friends, and get their butts kicked in TA, however, there is still AB. I'm willing to bet that if they fail to sync, that they leave the group they are in, causing a second problem, quitters. For FA and JQ, there is nothing Anet can do, since there are only about 2 instances of them that run. I don't think syncing is rampant in FA and JQ. Since there are only 2 instances, it is very probable that if you finish one, then immediately enter another, that you'll get a similar team as before.StatMan 15:04, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Suspended Account

my account was also suspended today for a innappropiate name and i believe it was due to a player spamming me in gates of Kryta and me and my wife were doing 600/smite runs out of gates of kryta and i think he reported cause he got mad.i asked the player to stop spamming me invites to go with us and i even said please and me and my wife proceeded to do our 600 run and after about 10 mins into the run i got suspended for 71hours due to a innappropiate name which was not true,my chars name was A Monk that Smokes...please tell me whats wrong with my name i have been a more than perfect GW player for over 2 years i also played the Beta when GW was first introduced.never have had issues before and would like to know how to fix this there is nothing innapropiate about the name.i rarely cuss in game due to kids playing online and its all about respect anyways,im also a member and admin over 5 servers of another online game that is a FPS game and we have children in game also and i know how to act and not have vulgar names.i think this should be resolve asap because this was an act of anger from that player.(signed Red Neck Smoker)
Hi. Support doesn't have the ability to reset a guild's territory, so with regret there would be nothing to be done about the guild territory at this time. But let's talk about the other issue: Yes, one of your characters was blocked, but not the one you've mentioned. A different character name was blocked for racist overtones: You might recall the one with "spear" in the name? Out of consideration for your request for a review, I discussed the name with both a Support senior and the team lead, and they both felt that it must remain blocked.
Interestingly, though, the use of "creative spelling" for the "F-word" in your guild's name caused it, also, to be blocked. You may not be aware of that because the one block would probably make the guild name block invisible at the current time. You are listed as guild leader, so you should be prepared to recreate that guild with a name that does not attempt to use Spoonerisms or spelling errors to introduce offensive words or phrases into the game. We're particularly concerned about character and guild names because other players do not have the option to filter them on their own. Sure, I can explain. After the block (which is only a few days), you will be able to change the character name. You will not lose anything -- the character and all items will be intact. As far as I could see, only a single character was involved.
As far as a warning about the guild name, may I ask what purpose that would serve? You cannot rename the guild, we cannot rename the guild. You cannot retrieve the items in the Guild Hall, nor can we. So it doesn't seem sensible to go through a warning process with potential discussion and monitoring to make sure a change was made, etc. It seems more logical to simply mark the guild for deletion and re-creation. sorry for spamming your talk page today Gaile, but also just saw this issue here, just as a related and very quick aside: Anet itself has a history of adding content which could be considered as being racist or derogatory themselves. For example 2 of my closest friends quit playing GW when NF was released due to the racist overtones included within the game.
One of these friends is of of African decent, who admittedly is a wee bit on the sensitive side, quit playing due to what he perceived as a direct racist attack contained within the game. I have to admit that myself and our friends thought he was over reacting a tad, but we did see his point in that in introducing Elona as an African themed campaign and then making one of the new professions a profession that throws spears as standard, it did seem errr... less than Politically Correct as it so easily lends itself to a common racist insult and even if someone does not name their character to reflect this, it's so strongly implied that its really hard to escape.
The other friend is a practicing muslim who follows the sufi tradition of Tariqah, also known as a Dervish. Admittedly he has not taken a vow of poverty like many in this religion but he still found it highly offensive to see his religion portrayed in such a manner. I pointed out to him that in the past members of his religion had been embroiled in conflicts, but when he asked me if I would be offended if anet added a proffession called Catholics who ran around in closley resembling ceremonial attire, killing all and sundry, would I be offended? I did kinda see his point.
They however were not the only ones as many people around the introduction of elona commented that anet had played on negative stereotypes when introducing Elona.
I will admit I thought this was over reacting a wee bit and that to a degree was historically and geographically accurate however I'm a paddy myself (and a T-totaler), and I have to admit I wasn't too happy when anet introduced a drinks drop for St Patrick's day as I felt that reinforced the stereotype that we were all a bunch of drunks. I'm not asking for anything to be changed at this point, but just maybe in the future a greater degree of caution should be taken when introducing things which can so easily lend themselves to being interpreted in a racist or derogatory manner. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 11:35, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
Africa has a rich and fascinating history and a beauty uniquely its own, and we're proud that we were the first game company to explore the lands and the histories that we touched upon in our game. The use of the spear as a weapon is historically accurate; its implementation was not / is not a slight nor a politically incorrect reference. Millions of points of data will corroborate this. The use of a Dervish is, I would warrant, no more targeted than the oh-so-typical "knight" with his many cultural (Catholic, Crusade, etc.) references.

I see your point Gaile, however knights although affiliated with forms of Christianity are in themselves not actually a part of that religion. A dervish is however what members of that religion actually are. Thus your comparison isn't really apt. The comparison would be more apt if say you mentioned a rabbi or the like, as these are things intrinsic to that faith itself. Thus creating a profession called Rabbi which ran about stabbing people may indeed be termed racist or at least portraying Judaism in a negative light. I know however that as support manager and ex-community manager their is no way you can agree with me on what im saying here as it would portray A-net in a bad light, however the fact is that upon the release of NF the amount of people I saw running about saying "OMG Anet made a spear chucker in Africa!" was really quite substantial. Not to mention that NF's possible racist overtones have been discussed on many of the fansites. I myself can remember raising at the time of the first St Pat's day rasing my issues with you about the drink drops and the fact that it could be taken as a slight against the Irish quite easily. I hasten to say here that I don't think anet or any staff member within anet is racist in anyway, however I do think that perhaps the possible obvious negative player interpretations of these additions were overlooked. However on the flip side of all of this, I also believe that we as a people need to lighten up about race instead of jumping on the defensive every time something could possibly be deemed as being a racist slight, so I'm more playing devils advocate here than actually trying to garner in-game changes. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 18:32, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Although i see your point misery, just to point out that the terms cleric and priest are generic general terms for people involved in religious ceremonies in various manners and thus not prescriptive of one particular faith, thus could not be taken to be from a certain group of people. As for templar, it is a Christian order of knight endorsed around about the 11th century which historically was involved in warfare and slaughter of many varieties. Sufism on the flip side is however not a warlike order and I think its tenants actually preach pacifism, thus joining that term and many of its integral characteristics (for example their garb and the female dervish dance which is a derivative of the whirling prayer that dervishes carry out) with violence could indeed be seen in a completely different light. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 02:25, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
Zzzzz semantics. There are also "Bishops" in some games, including "Chess" amongst others. I don't think bishops move diagonally or kill people or use magic to heal people. Misery are you unable to debate something without resorting to sarcasm? You do indeed have bishops in chess, however you dont get banned from playing chess later for naming the bishop something intrinsic to its existence. E.g. if you named it Bishop the Basher or some equal play on words you would not be banned from playing chess, however it does seem odd to be banned for calling a paragon, "spear chucker" when that is indeed a mechanic which defines its existence. Thus I am not advocating us going crazy with the P.C.-ness all i'm highlighting is that suspending someone for using a name derived from Anets own game mechanics seems a tad hypocritical. EDIT: also your point doesnt actually answer the fact that the armour design is clearly based on sufi attire and the dance of the female dervish and parts of the CE edition dance are also based upon sufi practices. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 21:00, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
No, I can't actually debate without bein sarcastic, it's in my nature. I personally actually think it's pretty stupid to ban someone for calling their character some derivation of "Spear Chucker", R/Ps are commonly known in game as "Spear Chuckers", it's not an ethnic slur, it's a description of what they do. I think it's hypothetically possible for someone to get banned for discussing "Spear Chucker" hero battle builds in all chat. Also your earlier arguments failed to answer the fact that many renditions of "clerics" and "priests" use Christian symbolism. Ironically Christian groups do get pissed off about that occasionally, they also like to try and ban things which involves demons or the word "demonic". You always piss someone off. I'm sorry your friend took it so personally and decided to quit the game, but I can't say that I've ever quit something I enjoy because it included portrayal of my Irish, Scottish, New Zealand or Christian heritage in a negative light. Neither have I misery and I agree with you completely. I don't like censorship myself, I find it distasteful, but my aim in this debate was not to get more stuff censored but rather to highlight to Gaile that their are many points within the game which anet included which people have taken to be racist or in some way a slur against them, thus banning people for then just describing those mechanics seems a tad on the hypocritical side.
