[edit] Objectives

  • Mamp in Rata Sum will brief you on the defenses
  • Protect each golem kiln as it heats up.
  • Learn how to deploy each golem into battle.
  • Raze the Destroyers hive.
  • Drop an Asuran beacon obtained from Sokka to summon golem reinforcements.
  • Defeat the Bringer of Destruction protecting the hive.

[edit] Walkthrough

Oola and Gadd will each take a side. Your party has two choices:

  1. Split to defend each side, keeping behind the bridge to gain the NPC support. Destroyers will attack in small waves until the kiln is heated. Once heated, the waves will cease, so it is safe to regroup.
  2. Run between the two sides, defending each Golem the best you can. Don't worry about Oola and Gadd, they will respawn if no other enemies are in their radar.

One effective tactic with heroes and henchman is to send 4 henchman (suggested are Devona, Lo Sha, Mhenlo, Talon) to the eastern kiln and flag them there. Then flag the 3 heroes at the northern kiln. You should then join the heroes at the northern kiln. The henchman usually can defend their kiln by themselves but you can run between the 2 kilns to help where ever needed.

Note that this means you will probably need both a healer henchman (e.g. Mhenlo) and a healer hero of some kind, one for each group (remember that all the henchmen must stay together as they only have one flag between them).

Once the kiln is heated, talk with Sokka to have him follow you and hand out Asuran Beacons to produce a pair of G.O.L.E.M. 1.0s. Since they follow you, there is no sense waiting. You should create them as soon as you can. You may have two golems at any time, and if one dies, talk to Sokka and drop the beacon to create a replacement. Interacting with a golem will toggle it between waiting and following. Fight your way around the chasm and you'll see a burnt area on the map guarded by many Destroyers. Defeat the Bringers of Destruction (you do not necessarily need to kill the rest) to complete the quest.

[edit] Alternative

An alternative approach that works well when you're with hench & hero, is to avoid having the destroyers attack the golems at all.

Do not approach Sokka at the start, instead turn Left and head directly to the destroyers. They can then be cleared as a full party, as they will not attack the Golems before you return to the center.

Once you have killed all the destroyers that are there, you can keep the party at the edge of the burnt area (flag if using hench & hero) while someone runs back and activates the quest. Destroyers will then begin to spawn and will be intercepted by your party, while the eighth party member returns to join the fight. If you have a Minion Master, there should be no problem holding off the destroyers as they spawn as two patrols of two destroyers each.

Once these patrols have been destroyed and the G.O.L.E.M.s have reached full health, be sure to go back and activate the G.O.L.E.M.s before you move in and defeat the Bringers of Destruction. However, it is possible to finish the quest without going back and activating the G.O.L.E.M.s - once the two Bringers of Destruction are dispatched the quest is over.

If you follow the alternative approach the time needed should not be more than 20-25 minutes.

[edit] Alternative 2

Another alternative approach is to combine both flagging with heros and henchmen and killing all the destroyers that spawn at the beginning of the mission.

Simply follow the first alternative approach by turning left and heading directly to the destroyers, clearing them as a full party. Once all the destroyers are killed, go back to Sokka to activate the Golem Kilns.

Flag your henchmen at the Eastern Kiln and you with your heros at the Northern Kiln. With the original Destroyers killed you'll simply have to fend off several pairs of Destroyers which is easily accomplished.

Once the Kilns are up to temperature, talk to Sokka and activate a Golem and defeat the Bringers of Destruction which can be done without clearing the spawn destroyers that crop up once you attack the Bringers.

Sometimes a G.O.L.E.M. spawns with unlimited health
Bug Bug.
There is a delay between when the Bringers spawn and the task to defeat them is added to the quest. A sufficiently powerful group camped on their spawn location can kill them before the task is added, making it impossible to finish the quest.

[edit] Initial dialogue

(Rata Sum):

These golems don't just make themselves, you know...although that's not a bad idea. But for now, this process takes some time. I'm sure our enemies don't want us to finish. Make yourself useful and defend this G.O.L.E.M. foundry from the attacking Destroyers.

Mamp

The G.O.L.E.M. production site is almost ready. With any luck our defenses will be set up before the next Destroyer assault. Are you ready to go there?
Yes Ready, willing, and able! (sent to Before the Battle)
No I'll check back later.

[edit] G.O.L.E.M.

Gadd: "Destroyer swarms are headed this way. Here is what we need to do: protect the golem kilns while they heat up. Once they get to the correct temperature, Vekk's human friend here can summon the magical brutes to battle."
Oola: "Brutes? The Destroyers don't stand a chance against my magnificent golems!"
Gadd: "Your golems? These things would be worthless junk without my power source."
Vekk: "Hrumph! Gadd never lets anything like reality get in the way when it comes to claiming all the credit."
Sokka: "Enough arguing. Here they come!"
Oola: "It takes some time for the kilns to produce a golem squad, but once they are ready, you'll be able to summon them to the front lines."
Oola: "Fight your way to the hive and destroy it. The golems will overwhelm the hive, if our hypotheses are correct."
Sokka: "A golem is ready to be deployed!"
Sokka: "Oh, my! What is that thing?"

[edit] Notes

  • If the opening cinematic is skipped before someone loads it, they will be separated from their group and will start the mission separately. So it is better to wait a little before skipping if you are with players with slow loadings.
  • This quest (and all primary repeatable Eye of the North quests) may also be obtained from the Scrying Pool in the Hall of Monuments after completing it once.
  • During this mission the entire area can easily be explored as the normal creature spawns are removed. Simply use the Alternative method and go to the right as you approach the burned area, before you go back to activated the Kilns.
  • Since there are a lot of Destroyers here, it's a good place if you're looking for Destroyer Cores, or just Destroyers for any other quest
