Location of gates and Interim Headmaster Mhenlo

Stave off the Sensali Tengu assault on the Monastery and defend Mhenlo with your life.

Quest information[edit]

Objectives[edit]

  • Speak with Qao Lin when you are ready for combat.
  • Position the Imperial Guards in defensive positions and utilize your Improvised Fire Bombs. There is only a short time before they breach the gates!
  • Defeat the attacking Tengu.
  • Interim Headmaster Mhenlo must survive.
  • See Guardsman Qao Lin for your reward.

Reward[edit]

Walkthrough[edit]

The Tengu will enter through two gates: first through the main gate (near where the profession trainers stand normally) and later through the north gate (i.e. the Sunqua Vale portal); fortunately, they do not come through Linnok Courtyard, so you only have to defend from two directions. Your best bet is to defend Mhenlo where he stands, since your primary goal is to prevent his death and it is nearly impossible to defend both gates. You have about 30 seconds before your opponents start attacking the gates and perhaps another 30 seconds before they can make their way to Mhenlo.

Once the Tengu start to swarm, their Necromancers will use Aura of the Lich to create massive minion armies and their Mesmers will use Panic. There are no healers (and almost no hex removal). Should you wipe, the party will resurrect near Mhenlo's original location, although this usually leads to quest failure because he will be left unprotected.

Options[edit]

You have two additional types of help available during this quest:

  • Apprentice Zhi will make explosives that can be used as Improvised Fire Bombs or 90 second-duration Improvised Fire Traps (IFTs). These skills can be obtained approximately every 10 seconds. Once you use one of the two explosive skills your skillbars resets back to normal and each skill must recharge before it can be used again.
    • Take note that should Apprentice Zhi die, she does not resurrect, unlike the Canthan Guards.
    • For quick access, you can accept multiple bombs from Zhi, then drop the Improvised Fire Bomb bundle on the ground without using it up.
  • You can move the Canthan Guards to better positions. Talk to them once to get them to follow you; speak to them again to get them to remain where they are.

Tactics[edit]

Tactic #1

First, place the guards to make good use of the natural choke points by having them body block the two stairways leading to Mhenlo; make sure these guards are positioned within earshot of a healer NPC. Then, drop as many IFTs as you can along the paths. Spread out any heroes and pop any defensive spirits they might have available before the Tengu arrive. During the battle, you can keep grabbing explosives and tossing them at the balled-up foes.

Tactic #2

An aggressive style of playing is to fight at an archway just west of Mhenlo's location. Aggro incoming mobs to fight your party there, so they don't reach Mhenlo. Should you party wipe, there will be time for your party to get resurrected.

Tactic #3

If you have a minion master, watch out for Mhenlo following your minions around as he tries to keep them healed. In fact, if you flag your team at the Linnok Courtyard gate beyond the portal, both Quin AND Mhenlo will follow the minions there. If you kill your minions, Mhenlo and Quin will stay stationary near the gate, allowing you to more easily deal with the Sensali at your pace.

Dialogue[edit]

Initial dialogue[edit]

Guardsman Qao Lin
"I knew we could count on you to volunteer, but we are short on time. The Ministry of Purity has moved off of Shing Jea Island in order to hunt down the gangs of Kaineng, and we all know how that is going. They thought the Sensali had lost the will to fight, but that's exactly what the clever birds wanted us to believe. The Sensali have already surrounded the monastery, and it's only a matter of time before they break through the gates. The Ministry is nowhere to be found, and we're the only ones close enough to reach Shing Jea in time. Say the word and we'll depart."
Yes Accept: "Those Tengu don't realize they were attacking the school of hard knocks to their heads!"
No Decline: "I've never really been a fan of education anyway..."
Ask Ask: "Are you ready to set sail?"
Yes"Raise the anchors!"
No"I've never really been a fan of education anyway..."

Intermediate dialogue[edit]

Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "Thank The Six you have arrived! The Sensali fell back to regroup when you arrived, but they are many in number and will be back soon."
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "The gate won't hold much longer and the ward that Headmaster Amara created on the staircase grows weaker by the moment! Are there more forces on the way?"
<Party leader>: "The Sensali have the monastery completely surrounded. We were barely able to get here ourselves."
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "But what of the Ministry of Purity?"
<Party leader>: "It would seem chasing political dissidents is a higher priority to them than defending the lives within these walls."
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "Even with the favor of the gods, I still fear we are outmatched."
<Party leader>: "We just need to improvise. Quickly! I need rope, any empty bottles you can find, and every drop of lantern fuel you have!"
Apprentice Zhi: "I found some rice wine bottles, but they're full..."
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "Then empty them, my child!"
Apprentice Zhi: "Uhhh...yes, headmaster!"
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "What do you have planned?"
<Party leader>: "We can construct explosives out of these items. We can either throw them at the enemies over the walls, or place them on the ground as traps."
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "Brilliant! Here is the rope and fuel. Now where are those rice wine bottles?"
Apprentice Zhi: "I'm...*hic*...emptying them as fast as I can. Come...*hic*...talk to me when you need one."
When timer is up
Canthan Guard: "Headmaster, the Sensali are coming back!"
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "To the gates!"
When the south gate has fallen
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "The south gate is down!"
<Party leader>: "Reinforcements to the south side of the monastery! Hold them on the bridge!"
Headmaster Amara: "I...I can't hold it any longer! The line of warding is failing!"
After the main gate has fallen
<Party leader>: "We need to move some of our forces to the north side of the monastery. We have to hold them in the choke point!"
After the first wave is defeated
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "We can hold them, just keep fighting!"
Canthan Guard: "The walls! They are coming over the southwestern wall!"
<Party leader>: "You seem surprised. They may not fly but they certainly aren't afraid of heights!"
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "Move our forces as needed, we must hold strong!"
After the second wave is defeated
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "They are greater in number, but our wills are stronger!"
After the third wave is defeated
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "Stand strong my brothers and sisters! The Six smile upon us this day!"
After the fourth wave is defeated
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "They just keep coming! There are so many!"
<Party leader>: "This is it, they're sending in all of their forces!"
<Party leader>: "If we hold them now, victory is ours!"
After the last wave is defeated
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "We've done it! We won!"
Apprentice Zhi: "We...*hic*...won? Wait, what did we win? Was it more wine!? I think I need a nap..."
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "Thank you, <Party leader>. Without you the monastery surely would have fallen."
Canthan Guard: "Headmaster, our scouts report Ministry of Purity boats on the horizon."
<Party leader>: "Always so timely...it seems it is time for us to take our leave."
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "Leave? But you're the heroes of the day!"
<Party leader>: "I've seen what the Ministry does to heroes that do not share their convictions."
Interim Headmaster Mhenlo: "I heard rumors about your falling out with the Ministry, but I did not realize the extent of your disagreement. Perhaps if I speak with them on your behalf. I could speak with Reiko..."
<Party leader>: "I thank you for the offer, but I think it's due time I speak with her myself."

Reward dialogue[edit]

Guardsman Qao Lin
"Well done, <Character name>. You defended the monastery and, perhaps more importantly, greatly weakened the Sensali. This was a desperation move, and their numbers will be greatly depleted by it. Of course, that hasn't stopped the Ministry of Purity from using this attack to propose a new law banning ALL Tengu from Cantha. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the reason they were not there to defend the monastery was because they wanted it to fall to the Tengu, just so they could point to that to pass their hateful law! But I digress. This was a great victory, and you have our thanks. I would say you should stay and celebrate, but I believe our mutual friend would like to speak with you in Shenzun Tunnels."

Notes[edit]

  • After using one of the explosive skills or dropping the bundle, all of your skills begin recharging for their normal recharge times.
