Quests and collectors[edit]

These should be added as they appear in game. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 03:29, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Are the quests being released progressively over the course of the event or are they all available today? I can never rememeber how the holiday quests work... Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә User Aliceandsven 1.png ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 19:30, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
With regards to collectors, are they going onto this page, or their own separate pages, I presume the latter, however I suspect they'll want links on this page. Jon Will 00:31, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
I don't understand why anything Wintersday 09 related wouldn't be included on the Wintersday 09 page. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә User Aliceandsven 1.png ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 02:00, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
What I meant was, have links to the collector pages on this page, and have the collector pages separately. I'll see how it was done last year for comparison. - Jon Will 14:03, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
All of the collectors already have their own pages. The table has been added to the page. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 08:42, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Cons[edit]

I hope the omission of Peppermint Candy Canes from the official page was just an oversight. They help us vanquishers. :D Sardaukar User Sardaukar sig.png 03:52, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

It appears as if they have changed nothing but the hats this year so both Wintersday Gifts and Winter Gifts should still have a chance of dropping Peppermints, of course we all know how much fun Anet has with nerfin' all the good easy things out of the game. --Skekzyz 21:08, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
Just had one come outta a Wintersday Gift, they do still exist! Jon Will 01:11, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

No new stuff?[edit]

Uhh yeah, nothing new. I mean, why didn't they give us the hugest holiday event since 2005 for Halloween? Our lack of gratitude is justified. Shadowform Shadowform, shadowform, ShadowForm, shadowForm. Ursan. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә User Aliceandsven 1.png ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 19:14, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Any guesses for the new hats?[edit]

Well anyone? LazloW User LazloW sig.png talk 14:52, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

A ghostly dreamrider hat, since it has already been made for last Dragon Festival Looky. But nvm since hat remove hair. So it would make us all bald :/ Jonny10 User Jonny10 Sig.png 19:20, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
I'm wishing and hoping for a santa hat -- Mocceb 19:56, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
The only hat they have ever repeated is that hideous Lion Mask so I doubt you will get yer wish Mocceb, my guess is a Top Hat because we all know Anet gets lazier and lazier as the years pass. Not all hats remove hair, btw. --Skekzyz 20:03, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
I think a top hat would be nice. Im guessing a hat with some type of star idea or angel idea behind it, or a tree hat. --Burning Freebies 20:54, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
A Top Hat sounds very likely, but what of the other hat? Perhaps a halo? Or maybe another cheap a$$ facepaint like they've done with the last two halloweens. 76.115.4.19 03:50, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
Because Halloween makes a good Christmas. --User Ezekial Riddle silverbluesig.pngRIDDLE 03:55, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
I actually thought to myself that they should have a top hat for Wintersday this year before I even saw this. ^_^ I hope they either have that, or some variant of the Freezie Crown, like an opposite for it maybe...Burnie Crown? =P -- My Talk Lacky 11:14, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
A top hat wouldnt be that bad tbh as long as they dont do any crap ones like they did for 2007, god those were horrific but im sure they will come up with something good as the masks they've done this year have been great compaired to the years before oh and btw @76.115.4.19 oddly enough the facepaints take more time to design and make than the hats do so theres nothing cheep ass about them :P --Azreal of SkyrimUser Azreal of skyrim signature.jpg 12:17, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
Please, anything BUT facepaint! They look very crappy on pretty much everything that doesn't have too much hair. At least cover the whole head and call it Failed Asuran Experiment head-paint-thingy. Let's not bring too much logic here. Markus Clouser User Markus Clouser signature img.jpg 22:01, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
The Zombie facepaint was actually extremely cool, my ritualist was wearing it year round (grey old looking hair, ancient armor) and will continue wearing it thanks to costume slots. It looked good on other chars too. My only qualm with it was how it darkened on the character selection screen.
The Skeletal facepaint was admittedly a little disappointing due to the fact that your nose is for some reason still there (it is supposed to be facepaint but it looks akward). And of course a year later, the same bug occurs. I guess Anet likes their annoying art bugs and transparent paragon hair.
Hopefully Anet does not revert back to shit like the Jester's cap or the card-board santa hat that doesn't obey the laws of gravity. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә User Aliceandsven 1.png ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 19:21, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
Take this with a grain of salt, but looking through the .DAT, it sure looks like there's quite a few textures added that could be combined into a costume. It's not the same color(s) as the Grenth or Dwayna costumes either. Manifold 23:44, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
I think Anet would need to pop out of our screens and shoot us in the head in order to make it any more obvious that more costumes are being added. Good job on that dive into the .dat, though, thanks :D Would you be able to post them or something? Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә User Aliceandsven 1.png ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 02:02, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Eh, you know what, looking at the pictures that are up now of the Dwayna and Grenth costumes, I think that's all that it is. They are red-colored though, which threw me for a bit. I'm new to the .DAT thing. Manifold 03:33, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
I am guessing top hat and Santa beard.--Lensor (talk) 09:36, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
I just realized, every future costume is most likely going to be a cash shop ;_; They won't be dropping from anywhere or acquired from anyone other than the costume NPC so the only choice left is either festival events, handouts from Anet (lol) or cash shop. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә User Aliceandsven 1.png ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 20:29, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
A Santa's Beard would be a funny and Random idea xD --Find And Seek User Find And Seek sig.png 10:13, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
No Grenth hat drop in Lions Arch when Grenth won, also has anyone else noticed you can't add the Dwayna's Diadem to the hat collector? Another bug? Yu Takami 14:39, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
It's a bug that isn't fixed yet. Since lots of players will complain heavily due to the fact that they cannot attend every single finale just to get the hat they might extend it for another day. But that's a big "might"! The hat is the most important part of the event, IMHO, because players may enjoy other parts of the event but ever since the conception of GW people have flocked together to attend the finale. And what is the grand prize at the finale? Bingo! 70.189.106.136 16:06, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Quest[edit]

REALLY hope that Anet continues the Christmas Quests in EoTN with a new series of quests involving the Good Wintersday Lieutenant Thackeray, and not repeat the ones from last year--Lord Randy 01:38, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

LoL it is Anet of course they are gonna repeat everything. They might have a new hat. User DrogoBoffin sig icon.png Drogo Boffin 04:05, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
Don't be so sure Drogo. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 04:47, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
I'd say we're definitely getting something new. Why else would the staff be so quiet (like they were leading up to the new Halloween quest chain)? Just have to wait and see. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 13:13, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
The new Halloween quests were mentioned on the official site, there is no mention of anything new but hats on the Wintersday 2009 page so if they are doing something new it will surprise the hell outta me --Skekzyz 19:55, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
Indeed. I had forgotten that. Hopefully we'll all be surprised. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 19:57, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
I do think it would be a shame if Wintersday gets less cool stuff than Halloween, but I'm reserving judgement. 188.74.101.228 23:16, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Jack Frost buff?[edit]

With many binding ritual skills that receive a buff earlier this year, you reckon Jack Frost will split into 2 versions, with the PvE version getting buffed up? Batchie 11:05, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Nope, it's far from underpowered for the solo quests. Holiday Blues, however... 24.197.253.243 11:54, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
Nah, Jack Frost is fine. It has more health than any other level 5 spirit and deals the same amount of damage as a player. Maybe a cast time buff would be in order, if that, but it's fine as is. --Kyoshi (Talk) User Kyoshi sig.png 21:14, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
I should have mentioned the cast time buff, that was what I meant. :/ Batchie 06:03, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
That's all it should get, if that. But it doesn't seem to have been touched. I still think it's pretty balanced, as far as event skill balance goes. --Kyoshi (Talk) User Kyoshi sig.png 06:06, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

new stuff just need to read[edit]

i know it's small but have a look at the line that says this.

Holiday quests in Lion's Arch, Kamadan, and the Eye of the North! Certain quest chains returning from previous years involve beloved (and rare) holiday-themed animals.

now i know it does not look like anythink new but plese note the s on the end of the line.

this means that we may have new charmable pets :)

i know some of you may be thinking that it's a small upgrade but plese remember your don't have to pay for it, unlike wow players :)--Thedreadlordpie 20:22, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

They added the Jingle Bear last year, so there is already a holiday themed charmable pet. This does not prove anything new. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 20:24, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
ok i know we got the jingle bear, that is one animal, the website says animals meaning there are more then one holiday-themed animal.--Thedreadlordpie 20:37, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
Jingle Bear + Mini Polar Bear/Wintersday Moa = Animals de Kooning 20:39, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
Wintersday Moa can be found any day of the year, and anet have never called mini pets animals there call them by the name of miniatures.--Thedreadlordpie 20:44, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
The rare part is a pretty obviously reference to the mini polar, IMO. Long story short, don't get your hopes up. :\ de Kooning 20:47, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
well i still think that anet will give us somethink new as they do each year and this may be it.--Thedreadlordpie 20:50, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
I don't want to give some false hope, but th live team said they where going to make new content updates now and then (especially for holidays) and each year there was something new.

Maybe there will be a great new feature, And if there's none, get over it, there will be another great update an other time. Don't mind my english and try not getting this topic archived as other "speculation topics".

Well if (and that's a big IF) they have added something other than new hats a mini Reindeer or Kidnapped Reindeer would be one of the more likely items. --Skekzyz 21:54, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
Just completed the EotN quest chain, it spawns a White Jingle Moa next to the Jingle Bear. It has the same necklace as Wintersday Moa and you can charm it. ~~Brodly 20:42, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Secret Santa?[edit]

I know this doesn't corrospond directly to the in-game wintersday 2009 event, but this seemed the most fitting. would it be possible for the wiki to run a player organised secret santa type event? People could sign up on a list, and possibly state what they wished for, and after a certain sign up date ended players would have a partner randomly selected. then they had a week or so to get a gift togethor (with a cost limit), and on one designated day everyone could exchange gifts. the Wikia version of the guild wars wiki did this last year and it was a lot of fun, so i thought we could bring a similar idea to this wiki. Just a thought, people can expand on it or reject it as they please. If theres a more appropriate section for this please relocate it if you can :) Death By An Arrow 22:20, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Category:Community_hosted_events
That being said, I have done/participated in such an event last year, and I have to say that the wiki was a messy way to organize. We had at least 30 participants... a lot of people had to wait until like April to finally get their gifts, some didn't ever get them, a lot of people could never be contacted because they signed up as IPs or whatever... and so on and so forth. The actual swapping of gifts was also a contentious matter, since some people were poor sports about getting "bad exchanges". Vili 点 User talk:Vili 22:25, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
hm, i completely forgot about that category page.. thank you :) i thought i would make the suggestion because i had a really positive experience with it last year, but maybe it could be organised more firmly? now that we know what went wrong we could possibly change the game plan. (such as for people who cant accept gifts, should not join at all, or if you cant be there to accept your gift the giver would just keep the gift. just quick ideas off the top of my head) i wouldnt have a clue as how to lead it though :s Death By An Arrow 22:50, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Rift Wardens[edit]

They are in the game and are timed to appear. Stop taking this section out. We document tons of other things players don't currently have access to. ~Shard User Shard Sig Icon.png 23:16, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Where is it said that they come in at a certain time? Also, I think the way it currently is, is fine. A little subtext saying that they are not in the game yet. BTW, hello! Long time lurker finally made an account. FireMarshal 00:23, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

In the past the rift wardens haven't been in game until the quests are available. I think the change is due to the way they are "automating some event stuff" now. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 01:03, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Don't feed the dwarf[edit]

Is it a bug? I was able to get in and out the dwarf cage without the "don't feed the dward" bug

No, you can now walk in and out of the 'cage' freely, even trough the candy cane bars. so people picked up gifts and went into the cage wich let the Grentchies stay at the cage so others could give gifts to the children without being bugged :P Jonny10 User Jonny10 Sig.png 15:01, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Candysmiths[edit]

I haven't been able to find them anywhere... Are they always late (I didn't pay attention last year because it was my first Wintersday^^), or were they forgotten this year ? 213.166.213.254 16:03, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

They will likely be added in the update which brings the Rift Wardens. Usually what happens is they put in the decorations, some quests, and the collectors on the first day, and then a few days into the celebration more gets added in. :) Death By An Arrow 17:44, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Candysmiths can already be found in the snowball fight arenas. They are dwarves with the "collector" title. --DAVAUser Dav Tick green.png 20:03, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

White Jingle Moa[edit]

This page doesn't tell anything about the White Jingle Moa, it even doesn't link to it. I think it's worth a section for it's own... --Mozoziz 11:33, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

EDIT: This is now listed under returning features, thx to the one who did it! --Mozoziz 12:43, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
the white jingle moa isn't a returning feature. it's brand new to this year, is there a more appropriate location for it? Death By An Arrow 01:56, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
This may require another year, but perhaps a new type of table thing that shows the year accompanied by the charmable pet for that year (2008 - Jingle Bear, 2009 - Jingle Moa, 2010 - etc.)
Can a new section be added to document the changes from the past Wintersday celebrations to this years. Aside from new rewards, maybe some new NPC is added, changes in the dialogue, new headgear, new pets, new quests, or maybe something old that has been removed or replaced. - Decollete 13:29, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

I agree that there should be something different in regards to the Jingle Bear and the White Jingle Moa. There is a separate section for the hats for a reason. Same reason applies here. Each year so far there is something new. Maybe simply adding a new section called "New Stuff" would also be appropriate. To me it just seems like a redneck way of doing it the way it currently is setup. Since each year there are new items added to the festival it makes perfect sense, IMHO, to add a section dedicated to display the new items so players don't have to thumb through a lot of old stuff to try and find what is new. However, this is only one man's opinion and everyone knows what opinions smell like... 70.189.106.136 17:45, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

The hats that you receive from the Dwayna/Grenth Support Rings in the Districts of Lion's Arch and Kamadan are free. -- My Talk Lacky 11:23, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Am I the only person noticing people are ignoring the Odd/Even split? Going through twenty Districts to find one where I can try for the hat I want is annoying, especially with the bug added to the mix. Tashiro 14:22, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

No. You are not the only one. I had to rezone several times until I found the Dwayna district (meaning more people stand on blue side in even dis). Panah Api 02:56, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
I don't know if this applies or not, but people were talking about that very thing in LA. They were saying that the majority of people in the district were on the wrong side when in fact they were not. Grenth was closer to the entrance while Dwayna was closer to the merchants. I think people were looking at the colors and trying to justify which side was which based on color. I didn't see any districts on the wrong side. But then, due to the bug I gave up trying to get a mask/hat.70.189.106.136 17:50, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

New hats?[edit]

At the bottom of the Wintersday 2009 page in the German wiki, there are the alleged new hats for this year.

Loosely translating their filenames, we have: Icicle Diadem and Snowflake Diadem. 76.164.111.57 23:46, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

It also says "Please note: The official names for the objects are not yet known! The file name here in the wiki has nothing to say.". Interesting find though. -- Cat Slayer Calli User Cat Slayer Calli signature.png 23:51, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes, that's rather obvious. I meant that it would be nice if we got costumes as well as hats for the festival this year. You know? Celebrate the new feature added by allowing everyone to use it? Btw, I got the costumes for free, so I'm not just saying this out of spite or anything. I just think it would be smart. Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 03:22, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I get you now. You mean get an outfit as well as a hat for each festival? That would be pretty sweet I suppose, but I highly doubt it will happen. It's not just you, the hats were really cheaply designed this year. Grenth's crest is just a crappier ice crown and Dwayna's crest doesn't even have any polygons, it's just a texture. And it looks terrible on other people in town with low res skins.

I have now changed toons that I'm doing this next one on in a desperate attempt to see if that helps. Mel from Hell 14:56, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
There is no "Sometimes" regarding players receiving a hat, even if they are there for a complete event session in either location, it should read "Most times" and I will change it (and dare anyone to disagree!). I have been running 5 gw accounts simultaneously for all 3 events, for 1st one all in same American dist in Kamaden, 2nd all in same dist in LA, 3rd five different dist in LA - zero hats from events! ...But! now this is weird, between the 2nd and 3rd event times (about an hour before 3rd event) a Dwayna hat suddenly appeared in the inventory of one char, for no apparent reason! On checking lots and lots of districts in both locations, I would suggest that < 10% of people have received a hat so far, even with multiple accounts and events. Note I have also removed the question mark from the title. Arrowmaster 15:19, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

The statement on the page: - Sometimes the finale event will not trigger, and as a result, players will not receive a Festival Hat. - is incorrect. The event triggers fine, people get presents and everything, just not the hats. Some do, but most don't. Up till now there's no clear reason. People are discussing on guru and INC, and have tried attending with and without hats on or off, or in/out of inventory, costumes on/off/inventory etc. It seems to be completely random. Not A Single Hat[edit]

My husband and I have both been online since the Finale has started. We've been in both Lion's Arch and Kamadan. Neither one of us has received a hat. I am going to log out of Guild Wars and run the program again to see if it helps. If it does, I'll let everyone know. I did e-mail Guild Wars Support around 6am this morning, but have not heard back yet. I figured something weird was going to happen after 2 straight days of some major lag in Kamadan (pings over 20k). I've been in District 25 and District 75 of Lion's Arch and Districts 23, 25, and 5 of Kamadan and no hat. I'll update this as needed... Shiva Eluluu

True, there still is the bug of not getting a hat at all, but at least this lets people know why they cant get their second hat.--Neithan DiniemUser Talk:Neithan Diniem 16:52, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
Me and a few guildies have gotten both. Tidas 17:02, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
It still says "In the tradition of the season" so I still believe it's meant that we get one of two hats each finale event, like we always did. There is still something wrong with the hats, but I have no idea why ArenaNet & NC haven't said anything about it so far. — Ciborg Golem.jpg 17:04, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
"In the tradition of the season, you will also earn one of two special, holiday-themed masks for participating in the annual Grenth vs. Dwayna holiday event!" ---> Always has been the case, you get ONE hat per finale of the event (since you can't get both Dwayna and Grenth at the same time...) This is just a matter of logic (You get the winning side hat, how in heavens could you get both ???). I think you should dig a little deeper before stating things like "I have the answer, it's obvious".... Meredy Redleaf 17:05, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
In comparison, previous years that statement was worded like this:
2008: "In the tradition of the season, you will also receive special holiday-themed headgear for attending the Wintersday finale...!"
2007: "In the tradition of the season, you will also receive special holiday-themed headgear if you attend the Wintersday finale. And this year, the hat you receive will depend on which deity wins the day, so choose wisely."
2006: "In addition to the seasonally appropriate headwear you can receive from either Dwayna or Grenth at the end of the grand finale..."
These all make it clear that you will recieve hats, they do not state how you will only recieve one per event. That has been the case the whole season of this holiday, so what cause would they have of clarifying that wish does not need it? I know they re-word it a bit different each year due to event changes, but this is a noticeable difference. And yes I know some people have gotten both hats, but that could just as well as be a bug as only receiving one hat when trying for both. And I hope this helps with "digging a little deeper".--Neithan DiniemUser Talk:Neithan Diniem 17:46, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
The 2007 version is worded to similar effect as this years, Neithan. "will depend on which deity wins the day, So choose wisely" More to the point, this year's reads as a variation of what has been said previous years, as has been the case each year. There is nothing in the wording that implies that each can only get one hat (and considering how well people are known to go for both, it is highly unlikely that the GW staff wouldn't make it explicit) any more so than the years before. The only explanation that makes sense at this point is that the hat-giving is bugged, which we already know. A lack of second-hat is most accurately attributed to the rarity of getting any hats at all this year, which many players will attest to. 74.248.147.122 18:14, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
I've seen both hats on the same account, given to the same toon, during the same event cycle where one was received in LA and the other in Kamadan.Mel from Hell 18:18, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
I've seen people with both hats. This is not the case. --User Master Fast sig-icon.pngShinigami King 18:22, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
We've gotten both hats ... for years. And for more than one dual-hat yearly event. Sorry, but changing it now would be complete and utter horse shit. Especially in years that one side has a crap hat and the other has a reasonable to cute one (like LA's fugly Charr hat and Kamadan's necro-appropriate skeleton face paint this past Halloween). Or, as a voice for the minority of role-players lurking around, what if we would like to continue to play different characters supporting the different deities and sport the new hats to show it? These two particular hats may be very similar, but that is most definitely not the case with most sets of hats years past. And if nothing else, too many people have gotten both. It would be unfair at this point to limit to only one.
As to different wording...? Well, that's likely just the marketing dept. or whoever. It looks professionally lazy to put out the same statements every year for an annual event. Lillium 18:27, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
What I posted is simply theory, Im not insinuating that I know exactly whats going on like some big shot. I know by reading it now that it sounds that way. Im putting out a theory only. I hope that my theory is proven wrong without a doubt, cause if it is indeed true then it sucks. I plan on attending more events myself to prove/disprove bug reports on here.--Neithan DiniemUser Talk:Neithan Diniem 18:43, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

What don't work[edit]

For the convenience of everyone, these are "solutions" to the hat problem that doesn't work (i.e. doing these won't help in getting a hat):

  • Putting your existing grenth/dwayna 2009 hat in a Xunlai box
  • Showing your existing grenth/dwayna 2009 hat to the hat npc then deleting it from your inventory
  • Changing characters
  • Logging off and logging back on
  • Closing guildwars and reopening
  • Trying higher numbered districts
  • Trying lower numbered districts
  • Arriving 2.5 hours early
  • Arriving five minutes early
  • Arriving late, but before gifts are given out
  • Waiting until after the gifts are given out and the avatars leave
  • Bashing your head on the keyboard

These are verified by me. I have three accounts getting the hat in parallel on three laptops. On all counts, I got a hat (Dwayna/Grenth/Dwayna) on the very first event at LA. Succeeding events netted me no hat on all three.

- 122.2.214.86 17:20, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

  • Standing on a different circle than the center

I tried since the first time, I stood in the corner and got the hat, but afterward stood in the center of the other avatar in winning districts and never got that one. I think it's just that the first round in LA worked and something FUBAR'd the code afterward. Leon Drakenhart 17:30, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

I'm thinking the only fair thing at this point is to extend the hat event an extra day, once they've repaired things. Anet is pretty good about making up for their mistakes. I trust them.

A repeat of two years ago seems more likely. 24.197.253.243 18:56, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Wintersday Nine Rings Game[edit]

Unlike the game of Nine Rings that is highly popular during the Cantha celebrations along the Shing Jea Boardwalk, the Wintersday game does not yield the same expected value (EV) for participation.

In the Shing Jea Nine Rings, players expect to win the same number of tickets/lucky points, regardless of which circle they are in. This expectation is to receive 85 tickets per 90 tickets spent, for a -EV of 5 tickets per 90. Given that people will lose more often in a corner circle (six times of nine) as opposed to the center circle (four times of nine), it makes sense to stay in a corner circle and wait out the variance. This yields additional value of the "Unlucky" title points over the EV of "lucky" title points of 85 points per 90 tickets spent. As noted in the Nine Rings Wiki page (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Nine_Rings), this game will inevitably result in losing their tickets over the long-run.

By contrast, the Wintersday game allows for players to GAIN shards over the long-run. Allow me to breakdown why this would be:

Center ring chosen: Person standing in the center ring will receive 3 shards + 3 Lucky pts. Person standing in a side ring will receive 2 shards and 2 Lucky pts. Person standing in a corner ring will receive 0 shards and 1 Unlucky pt.

Side ring chosen: Person standing in the center ring will receive 2 shards and 2 Lucky pts. Person standing in the side ring chosen will receive 4 shards and 4 Lucky pts. Person standing in a corner ring adjacent to the chosen side will receive 2 shards and 2 Lucky pts. Person standing in a non-adjacent/-chosen ring will receive 0 shards and 1 Unlucky pt.

Corner ring chosen: Person standing in the center ring will receive 0 shards and 1 Unlucky pt. Person standing in the corner ring chosen will receive 5 shards and 5 Lucky pts. Person standing in a side ring adjacent to the chosen corner will receive 2 shards and 2 Lucky pts. Person standing in a non-adjacent/-chosen ring will receive 0 shards and 1 Unlucky pt.

So, looking at those outcomes, we get the following results (on average) per 9 rounds of Wintersday game:

Center ring: 11 shards, 11 Lucky points, 4 Unlucky points Side ring: 10 shards, 10 Lucky points, 5 Unlucky points Corner ring: 9 shards, 9 Lucky points, 6 Unlucky points

As you can see, unless you are specifically chasing the Unlucky title track, it is the most profitable (over the long-run) to always choose the center ring. In the Wintersday variety of Shing Jea's game of Nine Rings, Grenth and Dwayna have granted the people of Tyria and Elona with an opportunity to not only gain from gifts (random Wintersday gifts in inventory) and costumes (winter hats), but additionally give them a game that is structured to award the players, as opposed to causing them to lose in the long-run.

At least you can log on! We got kicked off just before the 20:00 event and now get nothing but Code 50. Been trying all day to get a hat without any success... Dorsk 20:48, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
I cannot say that it's a bug, but definitely a design miscount. For example, while in Kamadan on European English districts 1-15 event #5 was in progress, people on districts 16-20 were staying and waiting, and only after some time most of them realised that this event will never come to their districts. Imagine the situation if districts 1-15 would be completely filled up and nobody outside is able to travel there. In my opinion, there are 2 options to resolve this issue: carry out the event on all districts strictly synchronously, no matter when a particular district has been created, or delay the start of event for every new district created before the planned end of event in the initial timetable. I don't think that any of these options is easy to implement, but this could prevent the complaints of players who missed the start... --Slavic 21:10, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

i am guessing that they dont have people in to update the big official page but our small community fourms are quick to update and the word will get out quickly.Rockweaver 21:57, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

I am new i adding something to Wiki, so excuse me if I do something wrong. But an important matter is, if there is going to be a rerun of the finale, do we need to keep canycane shards in stock ? If there is no official news about this people will not know if they need to save them. Normally after the final I would trade them all in so if someone can help me on this question it would be appreciated. Splendor Simplykind 22:03, 1 January 2010 (UTC) Splendor Simplykind 21:16, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

I'm assuming that by "rerun" they mean the entire finale will be redone, including the nine rings game, so yes shards will be needed in order to win. Unless they're going to do a hat vendor or something, but why else would they have said rerun? Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә User Aliceandsven 1.png ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 22:20, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
If the event is reduxed the associated drops will probably still be present along with the quests, allowing people to re-acquire the items, also not many shards are needed as if your in the center ring your guaranteed almost to gain shards.--Neithan DiniemUser Talk:Neithan Diniem 22:24, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
I think that gift givers and candysmiths will be working at least until rerun and even more if need. So, you can keep some shards and exchange them later. Really, a small amount like 15-20 should be more than enough for a single event, of course if you don't attempt to farm unlucky points. --Slavic 22:29, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Hats[edit]

I guess next years hats will be a floating pile of crap? cause thats the way its looking. 90.211.36.116

Bah! Quit your Humbugging! Some people actually like these hats (me for one). And they by far beat all the hats we've gotten for the last few years at any event. Lillium 00:00, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

That's completely not true..I know it's just an opinion but this year's hats we're almost identical as each other, AND there's only two instead of 4. Classic guild wars had 4 hats every wintersday, and 2 on halloween. MANY people were dissapointed this year AS WELL AS Halloween this year. pure...disgust.. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 75.41.126.141 (talk).

Well, as a woman, I really like these hats. There's a shortage of feminine head wear in this game (among other things), and while these are very similar in model, ice shards vs snowflakes is a complete difference in actual item and usability. And um, there were only 4 hats one year, that hasn't happened since four years ago, which was not even the first Wintersday, in what delusion would it happen again? (Minus the costumes, they're bought not given.) Lillium 15:52, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
I dislike Dwayna's hat this year, but I think the Ice Shard one is awesome. Recent hats are definitely a step ahead of the old "lose all your hair" hats. I don't think I'll ever be wearing the Snowflake one, it just looks like anet took a bent 2d plane and slapped some snowflake textures on it. But I know my elementalists will be getting a kick out of the Ice Shards. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә User Aliceandsven 1.png ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 20:18, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Why did everybody die?[edit]

When Grenth won everybody in the district died repeatedly. Last year, wasn't it only those who picked up a package who died? That made sense, having everyone die makes the presents unnecessary. Ramei Arashi 05:31, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Grenth has always sent minions around to randomly kill people after he won. The minions are Grentches that leave trapped presents. Both nothing new. 76.164.111.57 06:01, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
The minions of Grenth strike again! Grenth did want to prolong winter and all... the death of everyone... well, that's just because it's fun for him. Ugg McFly 17:53, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

No more duplicate hats?[edit]

I am in a district where Dwayna won, but I'm already wearing a Snow Crystal Crest that I had the festival hat maker create. I have already obtained and registered that particular hat earlier. When the fight ended, I did not receive another Snow Crystal Crest in my inventory. I remember having multiple copies of the same hat if I just went AFK through several events in town. Has there been changes, since I presume an update performed earlier already fixed all bugs? - Decollete 08:17, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Judging from the bug earlier (which appears to have been an attempt to implement such code) and similar experience with not having to toss half a dozen duplicate hats, this seems to be the case. Seryu 08:38, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
