Corporal Bane

Is awesome! I for one hope that Commando or it's variant will make it into GW2. (I could however swear that the voice over was done by the devs, and the lines were a little rushed, the whole thing felt like laughter was about to explode) --Boro 10px‎ 14:27, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

You're welcome. — Raine Valen User Raine R.gif 17:03, 1 Apr 2011 (UTC)
I was not joking. --Boro 10px‎ 17:19, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
You are correct, the voice of the Commando is provided by one of our own. Well, he didn't do the "Worst date ever!", though (a little out of his range), that was Elize, our office manager. John Stumme 21:18, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
He has a voice? I didn't hear it at all. Is it tied to the dialogue option? That's the only one I have un-muted, because Jeremy Soule is nice but Black Sabbath is better. –Jette 02:12, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Not in GW1, but on GW2's profession "reveal." -- Konig/talk 02:28, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Question

Just wondering, since it's been said that you guys have already planned out everything for the year already, what's the point of adding any more suggestions to the feedback space? It's been made useless for the year, more or less, as a result of that planning. Not trying to troll or anything, I was just curious because that's how it seems to me. User Nathe iconR.png Nathe 15:15, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Not entirely. Schedules exist for large projects, so that the team always has things to be working on - for example, there's currently two to three large things that we're focusing on. There's usually time that's available here and there that we can use on projects like "It would be cool to add this," or "It would be nice if we could change/fix that," so there is still a place for suggestions. John Stumme 21:24, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
In another line of sight from what Stumme said, reading and posting suggestions now allows the Live Team to schedule their next year with the suggestions and ideas in mind. -- Konig/talk 22:19, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
A good question Nate, & Not to be a deserter of our grand cause... but at this point I don't think I'd even care if they just stuck to doing their own thing with this game so long we got the same caliber of oddities we've gotten in the last couple updates. I just hope they find a way to direct some human resources towards it again after Gw2 launches. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 21:49, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, guys, that does make sense. User Nathe iconR.png Nathe 23:00, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
I agree ilr, I hope they give the Live Team more assets once GW2 is further in production too. I demand Utopia to be released as an expansion! (gw1 still has potential) -- Konig/talk 00:05, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
I meant the SuggetionSpace<-->Devs interaction in general. Don't forget the Gw2 "official" feedback is hosted here too and there's actually been a few ideas from users showing up in the latest Gw2 info. And it would sure be nice to know if those were purely coincidental or if Anet actually made a decision at some point on how they ultimately intend to use it for BOTH games. This is an ongoing topic of discussion on the Gw2 wiki as well. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 00:52, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Question, Mark II

Although I'm 99.9999999% sure of the answer, I'm curious if there's any canonocity to Regent Valley: 1059 AE - specifically wondering: Was there a battle of the Guild Wars in Regent Valley during this year? Asking because it would be something worth noting as something other than an April Fool's Joke. (also, wtf, Sarah hasn't aged in 11 years!). Also figured I'd ask since a previous April Fools joke became canon in a way. -- Konig/talk 01:52, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Actually... other things aside, one of the major selling points with this content for Andrew was the fact that, all of these many years later, we were finally able to show something of the Guild Wars... in Guild Wars. It's not out of line to believe that battle took place. John Stumme 23:40, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Commando trailers

Hey there, I was wondering what the music used in those was. Could you give some insight? Thanks in advance. - Reanimated X 07:23, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

I was wondering why the helicopters went straight melee against a dragon. Were they suicide-bombers? because they got a nice rack of rockets on the wings and a machine gun so by all means they should have been spreading out and circling the boss. --Boro 10px‎ 08:00, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Same reason as the people who charged into its mouth in the manifesto trailer, I'd imagine. 24.197.253.243 10:34, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Somebody there has no sense of tactics. --Boro 10px‎ 16:31, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
I think they didn't bother with all the effort of making helicopters capable of firing rockets. -- Konig/talk 20:10, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
There are a few awkward cuts to avoid showing any explosions, too. Maybe they didn't have any explosion effects handy? Could it be possible, that - despite the invention of gunpowder - there won't be any large scale explosions in gw2? Someone call Michael Bay, this may be an emergency!!!111 Tub 22:07, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

In america english district one, just before the "Commando Preview" content was released there was a big introduction for it in d1 of Embark Beach, in which General Stumme started warning people to clear the landing zone. It was lots of fun and everyone was like ZOMG, And we were all half convinced that when the new build came up they were just trying to get us to log out for laughs. Teal text. It. Was. Amazing. Wait, wait. Is it actually going to be that long before they release the end? The Misses and I have both been immensely enjoying it (it's kind of ruined other Mahou Shoujo shows for me) along the way. John Stumme 20:25, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
But, the site I am using has 11 episodes. o.0 Which is odd because the other site I had used (switched due to choppy animation) only had 10 episodes. I also heard that episode 12 is supposed to be released in Japan this month so maybe we will see it soon? Oh and Stumme, I don't think it can completely ruin other Mahou Shoujos for me but that's because dubs already messed up Sailor Moon for me as a small child. >.> Now I assume all Mahou Shoujos are more adult than I think they are. Katherinezoltin 20:34, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
Ever since I saw episode one of that show, Kyube has made me think of how "evil" sylvari can become. No lies but not complete truth, no emotion (or rather, not understanding emotions - especially of others), and working for "the greater good." I hope there's some sylvari who turn out like Kyube in terms of personality... -- Konig/talk 22:03, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
Shaft, the studio producing Madoka, has a habit of arbitrarily and repeatedly delaying their shows for extremely long times. User Felix Omni Signature.pngelix Omni 22:29, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Sweet Treat Weekend vs Sixth Year Anniversary?

The dates for both come strikingly close to one another, so which one of these will go first? Perhaps Easter? Lightbringer85 14:48, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Husband and I have been wondering that ourselves. If maybe one would come early or late to accommodate for the other. Alcyone 15:50, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Winds of Change?

I know you guys hate to be pestered and I hate to be the one doing the pestering, but people are getting bored in GW again. Can we expect Winds of Change anytime in the next couple weeks? Or anything big for that matter? XTWISTEDx 00:55, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

I know it's not an official answer, but I can safely say that in the next three/four weeks the Winds of Change content will not be released. But in the meantime you can prepare yourself for the many Community Events (Toga party this saturday) and the upcoming GuildWars Birthday! --User Karasu sig.png Karasu (talk) 02:15, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
In an above section, John Stumme mentions work on both the anniversary build and continuing work on Winds of Change - implying that they're different. As such, it won't be prior to the anniversary but we'll get some content going before the end of the month. How much content and what it is... is to be determined. -- Konig/talk 03:20, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
Personally, I haven't been on GW in a few days, but it's not from boredom. I'm a Game Art and Design Student, and I have an insaaaane ammount of modeling to do for my latest class. That being said I can safely say to you even if it weren't coming out soon, the longer you wait the better it'll be. The time it takes to produce something is quite indicative of its quality. So rest assured your wait should be worth it. Alcyone 11:42, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
Not to throw a wet towel on your campfire or anything (damn Texan metaphors), but some projects that take a long time really suck. As in, they suck so hard that black holes and coke-addled whores would be jealous. I'm thinking of one game in particular, but I can't technically say anything about it anymore....for various reasons. Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 20:04, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
Okay fine, that's a fair enough point, but when we already know some of the specifics that I'm assuming you would be taking into account as well, such as:
1)This is being done by the Guild Wars people.
2)Repeat point one x infinity.
More time spent allows more time for quality, with the team we know is working on it and the extreme awesomesauce they have come out with there is only option. Longer equates to better. Though there is one more thing we can conclude from my statements. I'm a suck up. XD 97.83.82.214 21:41, 14 April 2011 (UTC)Alcyone
Hey, I really respect the team that's doing the other game I'm talking about too. They make great stuff. Anyway, I wasn't trying to counter your point or anything. Sorry I haven't responded sooner, things have been super busy with the anniversary build. We are getting closer to putting out the first part of WoC - Andrew has been spawning like a wild-man. A wild-man on fire. It's actually a little disconcerting to watch. Maybe I'll show off some of the new art that we've gotten after the anniversary, the new armies are pretty spectacular. I do appreciate that people have been waiting patiently, and I would like to stress that when the content drops, it will be a pretty significant drop - not just a quest or a scene. WoC as a whole is getting close to a small expansion's worth of new story, and it's something we'll continue to add to over the year. John Stumme 17:52, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Legitimacy

Now I know this isn't your area Mr. Stumme, but I don't know anyone else to ask because I'm just not that bright, and the commando "reveal" shows that you guys have some ties to the GW2 team , so I'm sure you're aware Charr week is next week. NowGamer is making some pretty bold claims and a lot of people are questioning if things like an exclusive reveal, premier trailer and other bold claims are legitimate. I'm not asking you to reveal anything that isn't supposedly already out there, just wondering if you can verify that they do have some sort of exclusivity that I should be watching their page for. I'd figure the Twitter or FB page would say something but no. Anyways, once again, sorry to direct this question at you, but you've proven to be a reliable and honest source, and also the only one I'm any good at stalking. Alcyone 19:10, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

The Live Team (GW) and the rest of ArenaNet are still situated in the same building ;-) What ArenaNet does with these exclusive reveals is to give one different news site each time the first content they are allowed to reveal first. The exclusivity is thus usually being able to release it first and having an accompanying exclusive interview on the subject. Don't worry though. If you keep an eye on several fansites they will link to all the new information that will be revealed starting tomorrow. Also the Charr Week will probably propagate from the official blog and site, where you'll find most of the information. Happy Charr Week! --User Karasu sig.png Karasu (talk) 00:27, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

As mentioned I checked the information through twitter and fb first, but nothing was mentioned about now gamer, and it seems that what confused me was the massive hype as if some major game changing thing was going to be revealed. Char, while interesting and fun and worthy of a week isn't quite the level of exclusive they made it sound like. That being said, thank you Karasu, you explained it well. Alcyone 14:54, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
CR's are under marketing which might as well be worlds apart from every other department these days so you'd be better off waiting for Martin to address it on Guru or whatever. Also keep in mind that "exclusive" is a real bullshit term in the media biz these days and covers so many nuances that it doesn't mean anything anymore. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 22:30, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

You've just met one Tahiri. But for one reason: I can't afford it atm. q.q I'm very behind on my video game playing unfortunately, so I've been scouring Steam for cheap games. I haven't even played Portal 1 (except the demo) or Amnesia. :( -- Konig/talk 05:55, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
I will probably play it as soon as I seduce my boyfriend off his computer sometime within the next week or two. Too much going on in GW to play Portal 2. Though I did watch my friends last night play through the beginning bits and help make sure the Steam people got it somewhat earlier. We were glued to GLaDOS@Home all night. I'm really torn too. I really want Portal2 for the SDK tools I'm sure will become the new standard for Modding in that crazy Minecraft sandbox kind of sense (it';s got rotating walls & LIQUID/GOOP PHYSICS, ZOMG!) . But I don't wanna get started on any of it this month if the GW Anniversary stuff is gonna be really good this year. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 21:06, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

I started playing it last night, and I'm having a fantastic time with it. They've done a fantastic job with creating interesting puzzles that make you feel clever for figuring them out. Also, the voice acting/writing has been pretty spot on. John Stumme 17:40, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
I watched through it last night (yay youtube!) and wow, that storyline is impressive. I have never been so impressed with a game since Arkham Asylum in terms of storyline (sorry, GW1's story was good but never THAT good in my opinion). It felt almost cinematic and not just because of the fact I was watching it. The interactive environments helped lead the plot so beautifully and the ending, I haven't felt so happy/sad since I finished the last Harry Potter book. Boyfriend is going to have to watch out for me tomorrow, I'm stealing his computer because I KNOW he preordered it on Steam and I want to play. By the way, urge to make a Chell costume for Halloween is rising. Katherinezoltin 22:22, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
I went as Chell for Halloween last year! It was the easiest cosplay ever, though I recommend buying the boiler suit well in advance so you have time to make adjustments. I bought mine at the last minute and ended up stuffing many crazy origami-like folds under a tight belt just to make it look like I was wearing an actual article of clothing and not an orange bedsheet. I'm a bit sad that minipets have been replaced, but for purely selfish reasons: I'm 11 away from maxing out the statue in the HoM, and more minis would have served to drive the prices of the existing ones down. -- Hong 08:18, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
I'd be okay with tonics, if they weren't all ugly-ass henchmen. The only halfway decent ones are Shiro and Kuunavang, which will be prohibitively rare. Not to mention you can't use tonics outside of towns and outposts, which I never visit because I hate people and hope they die. I guess I can sell the gifts, though. –Jette 12:52, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Apparently you can use the Tonics in explorable areas though. --File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.pngChieftain Alex 12:56, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Yes, they chose tonics that already had the animations needed for use in explorable areas (which is probably why they chose to use tonics rather than create minis, which Linsey had mentioned was a lot of work). -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 12:59, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
If they're useable in explorable areas then I guess it's not as bad, but it's still pretty disappointing. The only ones worth having at all are in the green and gold categories, while the others will be next to worthless. They would've been better off using tonics with incomplete animation sets than turning players into stupid heroes. –Jette 13:03, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
The only expensiveness will be player related. Due to the high amount of tonics, the %'s to get them are close even between different rarities. It's far more likely to get a green tonic than a green miniature (likewise, it's even harder to get a specific tonic). -- Konig/talk 20:14, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Villainy of Galrath Quest Text Is Vague

Hi John, I've noticed that the in-game text description of the Villainy of Galrath Hard Mode quest lacks all indication that the player is actually supposed to do this quest in HM (otherwise Galrath won't show up). There is only a [Difficulty: Master] tag at the beginning. If someone doesn't read the update notes or the interview, he'll have no idea he needs to manually switch to HM in order to complete the quest. I'd propose adding a new objective to the top of the list of quest objectives that tells the player to switch to HM before starting the quest. 78.92.3.160 21:05, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Agree with that, the quest descriptions need to clearly state that HM is required or else it will just cause confusion and annoyance to the players. Damysticreaper 21:18, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

New Friend List Feature

Hi there John... I was wondering if we could talk about the friend list for a bit? A few weeks back, you guys instituted a change which inadvertently allowed players on our "ignore" lists to be able to see that we were online and to message us. To your credit, this was quickly resolved... and the recently added ability to select our status (online, offline, etc.) at login has been great and is much appreciated. However, now you guys have instituted another change, this time giving out our location to those with whom we are mutually friend-listed. There is a suggestion thread on Guru right now in which many of us have expressed reasons why we are not happy about this change, and why we feel it is an invasion of privacy forcing us to either always be in offline mode, or to de-list people with whom we may want to stay in touch but don't necessarily want to be able to track our every move through the game. It's also worth noting that this change was instituted without warning, and that's an issue in and of itself. I would really like to ask that first, if you're going to make a change that will impact our privacy, we be given plenty of advance warning. I would also like to ask that you provide us with an option to NOT broadcast our location whenever we're in online-mode. Having to choose between either being able to talk with people in-game (whether friends, or part of trading in Kamadan or whatever) all the while broadcasting our location to everyone on our friend list - or alternatively, to be stuck in silence in offline mode... they're just not reasonable choices. With an abysmally small ignore list allowing for only 10 slots, it becomes that much more important to leave control over communication, location and online status in the hands of the players. Perhaps some day the more casual contacts on our friend lists are people we would one day be comfortable knowing our location... but I don't think we should be forced into it with no recourse but to permanently set ourselves to offline. Thanks for your time, John! TheGizzy 01:03, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

I somewhat agree (I actually posted a suggestion about it) that it would be nice to have more control, but I'm really curious as to why people care if others know where they are in the game? What difference does it make? It's not like you're broadcasting that you're in the bathroom. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 01:17, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm personally more annoyed about all the "omg why aren't I on your flist" drama that has resulted from this feature. Personally I won't cry about not being on someone's list, but sadly there are plenty of people willing to angst over this. -.-* -- User Elveh sig.png Elv 18:54, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Zaishen Scout problem with beginners

I keep finding beginning players wandering around Embark Beach unable to figure out how to get back to their playing area. They are low level and do not have access to boat travel. Is there some method to prevent under level 10s from traveling via Zaishen Scout? One newbie said he had been there for three days because everyone kept telling him to use the boat to get back. Darcy 19:48, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

He/She can talk to the traveler of the continent of which he came from to get back to that mission outpost. Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 20:02, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
The Zaishen Scouts are in beginner outposts for the very people who get confused by Embark Beach... We need a pop-up text for when zoning into Embark Beach but not having unlocked port towns if possible (like when you first enter a port town you get the pop-up text telling you who to talk to gain access to other campaigns). -- Konig/talk 20:27, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
Without access to a port town, you can only leave via the travel-NPCs. But doing so requires a newbie to know a) how the travelers work (which isn't documented ingame unless you talk to them), b) which continent they were born in, c) the region they're in and d) the name of an outpost already visited. That's quite a lot for someone who's apparently new to the game and hasn't familiarized with the lore yet. For the record, I've encountered a few of these lost souls, too.
Considering the amount of people asking "how do I travel to <continent>?", a popup that's only visible once is mostly ignored. A simple, but effective way to help them may be to add a button to the map similar to the "Leave Guild Hall"-button. No need to memorize the last visited location, just throw them back to their home town (Ascalon, Shing Jea or Kamadan) and they'll find their way from there. A less simple fix would be a quest automatically added in embark beach that forces you to NPC-travel to your home town once. Like the quests that explain regular map-travel. Tub 20:59, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
Good idea, Tub. It could just say, return to native outpost or something along those lines. (Although, I wouldn't mind if EB and GToB has a return button/NPC like we have for GH.)  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 21:03, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

I agree this is a subject that should have the focus of the live team. A pop-up upon entering would be the best solution. But also adding the ship for all players but with a changed feature. naming it will return you to the last outpost visited on that campaign. Beside fixing this problem, it would be great to have this option for other players. (eg. when you need to get a certain skill for the next vanquish, you get it and upon entering the continue you go right back to the right outpost.Rumian 09:02, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Friend list improvement

Hello, John! I have very simple suggestion, so I write here (excuse). Could it be possible to add to online friends the tooltip, like in the party search window? For example:

A/R20 Character Name
Size: 1/4
Location: Kamadan
District: English-1

or

A/R20 Character Name
Size: 8/8
Location: Joko's Domain

I hope, the reason is obvious - more informative and more compact view. --Slavic 19:35, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Historical/Unimplemented quests/events with lacking data

Hey John, I know you're most likely highly busy with WoC, but I have a request if you ever have the time. I was wondering if you could shed any light on the quests from this category - I believe they were originally pulled out of the .dat and are beta quests, but unfortunately I don't go far back enough to know, and I was wondering if you knew anything about them so we could fill out those pages at least a bit. Likewise, I was wondering if by any chance you could pull up the dialogue from the finale of the Dragon Festival 2006 and the dialogue from the Day of the Tengu quests, since we can't get it anymore we can't really complete it on our own. Much appreciated if you could help. -- Konig/talk 07:56, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Actually, when I posted that comment I meant the category I linked. However a couple days ago I "filled them out" (e.g., added quest templates and where we found them) which also meant changing the template on the pages which placed their category to {{Unimplemented content}} and in turn placed them in Category:Unimplemented content. -- Konig/talk 23:46, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Vanquish Consumable

This may not be the place, I have searched for a suggestions page unsuccessfully. I was part of a discussion to where people were talking about how nice it would be to have a consumable that could ping the last few enemies on the map when doing a vanquish. It could be anything, a summoning stone that summoned a scout npc to lead the way, something different than the search for the last mob. I understand to some that may be part of the game, just seeking them out, but some others would enjoy some kind of guidance in the last few mobs. Possibly a new feature to be added to ranger pets where a certain percentage is killed you could click a new tab in the pet bar that put the pet into scout mode. I know there is likely no ability to do something like this, but it was just an interesting possibility.PS. If this isn't the place feel free to move my topic to where it belongs. 69.242.196.134 00:24, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

If you are simply asking to be pointed to a specific disucssion, this isn't the worst place to post. But it would be better to place questions like this at the community portal or Ask a game question or even Ask a wiki question (so as not to clutter up Stumme's page.) I and others within my guild have joked about this type of feature, but I don't think anyone has formally proposed it. — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 01:42, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

r12 Commander?

I'm not sure if you are the right person to ask but do you know what the max rank for the Commander Title is? It was documented on wiki as being "Commander in Chief" but it has now been changed to "Legendary Commander". It can be found through DAT crawling or, possibly, through memory editing (change your rank and the title may change retroactively). Consecutive win streaks in RA

Hey, great job putting asstons of PvE rewards in PvP. Should keep things a little less than dead for a few weeks. Would it be possible to remove the consecutive win cap from RA now? It makes no sense to limit the number times you can win in the arena (I believe the limit was only put on in the first place because TA was removed and it was an easy way to deal with what happens after 25 consec in RA). Just put a hard cap on the max number of glad points you can earn per win. That way players who want to continue their streak beyond 25 can do so, but you don't force entire teams to stick together. Cheers--TahiriVeila 13:58, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

I think this was done for two reasons: 1) To help break up syncers (instead of letting them run free completely), 2) to give others a better chance at gaining consecutive wins. The developer notes mentioned the sending back bit so it seems they intend to have that stay. Also, this is a suggestion. -- Konig/talk 15:02, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

Emergency

You need to do something (and quickly) about the match manipulation that'll be happening in GvG. People are going to be red resigning for strongboxes now. They shouldn't be dropping at low ranks anyway. It'll give more incentive to climb the ladder.60.234.197.191 23:37, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

I say do nothing. Either people will manipulate matches and get away with it, which will ruin GvG, causing stress and suffering to some, which will make me laugh; or they'll manipulate matches and not get away with it and all get banned, causing pain and suffering and incessant whining, which will make me laugh harder.Jette 00:04, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
You don't even need a high rank requirement to prevent RR. Just make it so you don't get strongboxes unless you have 1025 rating. Or just ban a couple guilds for RRing and set a precedent--TahiriVeila 00:37, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Alternatively, or in addition to the minimum rank requirement, you could set a minimum activity threshold of some kind for the strongboxes to appear. Possibilities include number of NPC kills; number of player kills; total damage dealt; and so on. I'm not familiar enough with GvG to work out the details, though. -- Hong 16:26, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Guild Wars Maintenance

Just received a Guild Wars Maintenance message... I was so close to getting my Slavers' Exile for my HoM... :-( Just was wondering what was up... Thanks. Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 07:16, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

"We’ll be doing some maintenance work on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 12:01 AM Pacific Daylight Time. We expect the work to take about an hour, during which you will not be able to log in. We’re sorry for any inconvenience, and appreciate your patience.

End time: Thursday, June 9, 1:01 AM PDT" Main Website
However, there is nothing posted at Network News. Naturally, many people were taken by surprise. I know my guild leaders would have posted status updates had there been any warning that this would take place.
I assume there was an emergency, but the note at the main website implies it was a planned outage. — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 07:34, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
I agree, there's nothing on the network news. I'd expected it to be on the login as well, if it was a planned outage or a system wide notice to all the players like when they switched servers. Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 07:44, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
Gold farmers finally got into an administrative account, and they're ransacking the entire game. Soon, everyone's account will be empty and everything will be for sale on eBay. –Jette 08:21, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Unless it's something that is an emergency fix. Plus since they are based out of Pacific time they assumed nobody would really be on, which is stupid, but no other reason to do it at midnight their time. Dervish-tango-icon-20.pngDevi Talk 13:35, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

The Facebook page and the official website aren't things I check often. A note on the login page couldn't have been hard and seems like it'd get the most attention, which is the point of sending out a message. (That said, I did learn of it beforehand from Twitter.) --ஸ Kyoshi User Kyoshi sig2.png 16:12, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

(Reset indent) There is still nothing at Network News. I'm not sure when the main page was posted, but I certainly shouldn't have to read Twitter or Facebook to learn about scheduled maintenance, which is why I believe this to be have been some type of emergency fix. (FYI midnight PDT is about as good a time as any: the numbers of europe-based players are tiny and all but a small fraction of US players will have already signed off.)

What was unusual was that people were kicked without warning at midnight PDT (0700 UTC); that happens only very, very rarely. Normally, there's a main site announcement 3-7 days in advance and a login screen message. (We know it's no longer hard for them to update that.) Kyoshi: when did you get the Tweet? — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:27, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Here is the relevant tweet. It links to the European site's network news. Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 16:32, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the link. There's still nothing at the default network news page. (And even the Euro-news page has nothing new.) According to the time stamp, the tweet was sent about 6 hours ahead of time, which is another indication that this was hastily scheduled. — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:38, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Your new desk and anime stuff

Alright, I have heard rumors of your amazing desk at your old office, can we see pictures of the new one? Is Haruhi still commanding her Dalek to assimilate the masses? Seriously, it's the one thing I've been wondering about since the Anet move and since I didn't win the contest...I must ask for pictures.

Oh, and thanks to you I have watched "Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka?". Might watch the rest of your "now watching" list, mostly because they sound interesting according to their tvtropes pages. And as a suggestion, "Ano Hi Mita Hana No Namae O Bokutachi Wa Mada Shiranai" is really good in my opinion if you haven't seen it. It has 3 episodes left to air in Japan at the moment but it's a good slice of life story that doesn't get too sad considering it deals with grief and loss years after a girl's death. I think you'd like it, I've already got Konig watching it, but I make him watch everything I find. Katherinezoltin 06:21, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Zombie was pretty funny for the first half of the show, then it just turned into generic ecchi comedy and the plot never materialized. Ano Hi Long Name is quite excellent, but I think this season's best show might be Steins;Gate. User Felix Omni Signature.pngelix Omni 07:40, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Too bad im in th army and i cant go to any conventions because of that :\. Holy crap...another Blood: The Last Vampire anime?! Written by CLAMP and animated by the GITS team!? I think I'm going to really be looking forward to July 7th, and I don't even have a bamboo plant. Need help determining if you guys intended for this to be a reference of Long Island Iced Tea or Not. Too many want to speculate and say it is, while I think for the moment, It should be possible to keep from speculation. Can you help confirm or not? Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 18:40, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

lol just looking at long island ice tea and battle island ice tea its hard to find a argument against it being a reference.-User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 21:51, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
I know, but I'd rather it not be speculation and I'd like for an Anet staff to say yes or no to whether or not they intended it to be a reference or not. It'd save a lot of reverts, arguments, etc. It'd save the drama that's there. Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 00:36, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
Considering the number of points it gives, and the number of different alcoholic drinks in a single Long Island Ice Tea, I'm pretty sure it's safe to assume it's a correct reference. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 23:28, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
That's understandable, but It'd be nice for a dev *cough*John*cough* to have a say. Really, it'd be interesting on kinda how they came about it and things. ^.^ a great kinda lore background/idea, maybe. Heh. ^.^ Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 00:09, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Well, we can't bother Devs with every single trivia and reference, considering the sheer number of them Guild Wars has. There are some that are not clear at all, like in the case of Shiro's name and its countless homonyms in Japanese and other Asian languages that makes it hard to know if his name is a reference to something. But in this case and many others like most Monty Python references, many shouts, many of the inscriptions, movie references, the GWAMM title rank quotes... They are clear enough without asking a dev for each one. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 13:04, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
That is obviously true, but this one has ridiculous debates that I'd rather see settled with a Dev, than allow some speculation. Allowing any speculation in one area, can cause issues in others. Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 16:32, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

GW(1)Fanday

Hey John. I feel like I've been pulling myself in a dozen different directions since getting back, but one thing I want to make sure to do is say thank you to you and the rest of the team. I was the one front row, second-from-the-left from your perspective, if you remember individual people and not just a blur of oh-god-people-staring-at-me-expecting-me-to-be-clever. ;) Regardless! While all the buzz is about Guild Wars 2, I still consider the original near and dear to my heart. I've played the hell outta that game, and I expect to be among the first in line when Winds of Change starts going live. So I was quite happy we got some time with you and your team, putting some faces to names and just hear from you guys. Plus half you guys dressed up for us, which was sweet of you. ;) As for the rough start... Well, things may not have been perfectly smooth, but that was kinda the order of the day. Everyone on both sides was a little fumbling at first, but then it comes down to devs who enjoy the game and fans who enjoy the game having fun together. So long story short, thank you for taking the time out for us, and don't think you guys are forgotten amidst the GW2 lovefest.

PS: I just know there's something to "What did the Afflicted say to the Mursaat?" but a sufficiently (candy-)corny punchline just isn't there yet. I'll keep thinking about it. - Tanetris 04:28, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Bahltek

Just a quick question, does the Live Team still intend to use Bahltek in the future? I know Linsey said that there were plans for him, but everything has changed since then so I was just wondering if that still applies. If not, could you maybe tell us what he was going to be used for? I was always curious :3 --Santax (talk · contribs) 17:26, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

& what if he's sealed away now? How can we be sure his involvement in the world didn't end with NightFall's Epilogue? The thing about an Envoy or Puppet is that they're only around as long as their "Boss" is. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 01:55, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
But Bahltek was never (shown) to be a puppet (and certainly isn't an Envoy). Konig/talk 20:50, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
Besides, he wasn't added to the game until long after Nightfall was released. --Santax (talk · contribs) 20:52, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Tonics bugfix

Hi John,

As I'm sure you're aware, one can use two tonics in the same outpost by quadruple clicking a stack of two or more tonics. Prior to the most recent update, doing so would cause two disguise effects to appear on the skill monitor and would award party animal points as normal for consuming two tonics. This could lead to, for example, a brown rabbit and a white rabbit disguise, a footman and a guild lord disguise, etc, on the same character at the same time (save the half second or so at the beginning and end of the disguises), with the character visually appearing as the latter (right-most on the standard skill monitor) disguise.

Now, however, doing the same thing grants only one disguise effect on the character. I didn't have much time to test this properly, but I am wondering if this was a known bug that was fixed. Specifically, I am wondering if:

  1. Any of these changes were intentional and intended to fix a known issue;
  2. The tonic disguise effects overwrite a previously existing disguise;
  3. The character gains party points for both tonics; and
  4. Given the existance of Loose Magic, if quadruple clicking tonics was considered a bug, feature, or exploit before this change (if this change was intentional).

Yours,

24.130.140.36 17:36, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

This still works just fine, perhaps you're not clicking fast enough? I can still click through a pair of mystery tonics and receive two disguises and twice the points. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 01:35, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
you would probbably get a reply if you would have taken the time to post this on the support forums-User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 03:26, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Well done!

Winds of Change was a fun. I really liked having the badass NPCs along with us, and their armor was awesome. The ability to get (purple) platinum martial weapons is nice, and I'll probably invest in the fan-and-dagger combo at some point, unless Imperial Weapons turn out to be absolutely amazing.

My only real negative feedback was for the last couple quests; for the very last one, we spent ~20 minutes fighting through <area> and didn't move very far because there were so many enemies. Perhaps we should have been better at ballin' and rojjin', but I feel like it was a very dense finale that took away a bit from the surprise ending. Also, Minister Cho's was hard, but I'm not sure if that's a bad thing or just a side effect of using four players instead of six or eight.

Paragons still suffer a lot in less-than-eight-man zones, but that's probably not your main concern right now.

Also, needs more Miku. Just sayin'. (But I would say that anyway.)

Can't wait for the next part!

-- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png 14:05, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

The thing that I think is giving people so many problems with the last quest is that if the named Jade Brotherhood bosses are killed, more Jade Brotherhood guys are spawned in the map - and this happens for each of those bosses. They all have various scenes, and don't need to be killed unless they get charged into. Actually, Reisen reacts differently in the final scene depending on how many of the bosses you've killed along the way. John Stumme 16:30, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
I have just a small question John. I think someone mentioned that part 1 would consist of 42 quests. But there are only 17 (or 18?) quests discovered by the community as of now. Is the rest of them in? (and yes I am aware that there are 21 NM and 21 HM quests so I am speaking of the NM quests) And I think you guys did a pretty good job with part 1. The storyline is great even though I don't quite like some of the quests, because of the sheer amount of monsters in NM. I mean they even have gimmicky builds so nice trolling us :P So keep it up for part 2 and 3 and good luck with finally killing Shadowform ^^91.62.245.227 16:57, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) I really liked the final quest, but then I have a thing for big, chaotic fights -- that's one reason why Factions is my favourite campaign, the quests/missions with 12 or 16 party members against hordes of enemies. It did make my character's reaction in the final dialogue a bit weird, though.
I actually had the most trouble with the Haiju Lagoon quest: the constant damage from using skills seemed to make this one a lot trickier than the others, even Minister Cho's. Possibly I got unlucky; on both occasions I did it, I encountered eles with Meteor Shower and that tends to really do over heroes/henchies.
Overall though, very nice! Definitely looking forward to the next instalment, with, hopefully, more Miku.

Well SF can only be cured if it gets a complete function overhaul. But talking about builds, who the heck comes up with these builds. I know some are taken from meta builds but like WiK Woc enemies have quite a uhh unique skill set. Damysticreaper 17:04, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
Reisen wasn't a problem at all, actually; he died without my noticing what hit him. I have a really strong suspicion it was Pain Inverter, though; our sin had been one-shotting afflicted rits with it. We also only killed two extra bosses because someone (namely, our sin) decided to be a spoil sport about it. Something about dying because the imbagon (myself) was off pulling assassin bosses. I dunno what that was about; bosses give morale, after all. -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png 22:08, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
The fights are challenging, which is nice, and it's cool fighting mobs that even I can't just steamroll without doing a bunch speed, coke, and PCP. The story seems vague and a little lacking so far, though, and the entire content thus far is basically a dozen copies of the exact same quest: "go kill Afflicted, it's important." The quest mechanics are a little dull, as well; there's nothing new or interesting. I was hoping for mini-missions or similar more than combat quests; not as big as the BMP content or anything, but something with a little more meat than the numerous Afflicted fights.
I had no problem with the quests, but I think most players are going to have substantial difficulty with a lot of the quest line, especially in areas with less than 8 party members. I think the Normal Mode quests are more challenging than they ought to be for the average player. I was disappointed by the use of recycled skins for the Ministerial Commendation rewards, particularly the ones that are craftable as is (katana, for instance) although I am thankful to finally have a collector who rewards Platinum Staves. However, I've heard Imperial weapons are coming, and if that's the case then maybe they'll be a little more original.
I'll withhold any general judgment until the whole thing has been released. –Jette 00:02, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
In perspective, I also enjoyed it. You basically wipe out the afflicted and start a hunt for the Jades. I don't mind the big massive battles (like BFLA). It's a good prequel for the next two installments. But a several of my casual friends had a lot of trouble with the nm quests. some even quit. It was very repetitive. I hope the next installments have more variety in the gameplay. Maybe a few good team missions, role playing missions, historical missions idk. 17 quests of vqing was just a little over board. and dido on the weapons. new skins would be great :) --Moto Saxon 00:54, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
I enjoy the fact that I can't quickly and easily beat these quests with my hero setup (though the fact that I'm not using consumables may be a factor). I'll have to rope my friends into playing it with me. I agree with the storyline being a little lacking, but as an introduction to the story and enemies it's not half bad. Looking forward to more excitement in the next installments. --ஸ Kyoshi User Kyoshi sig2.png 01:51, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
It's okay, so far, but it also confirms what I've always thought - that Anet is full of sadists. :p Only they could design quests like Cleansing Shenzun Tunnels and think dying over and over and over again is somehow fun. That and using HM level enemies in NM. There are other ways to create quests beyond just making them hard, hard, hard. I understand some players tend to be on the masochistic side, but not all of us are. Quests that are actually completable without violent hair loss are much preferable to those in which death is assured. And you only give purple weapons with recycled skins as a reward? Whose idea was that? Make the content worth our time, or don't make it at all. Not to mention the whole thing was half a year late to begin with.User Nathe iconR.png Nathe 14:52, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
I don't like the cleansing quests; it's just too much kill ten rats for my taste. I expected something a little bit more imaginative, but I guess there will be more coming. What I have enjoyed so far, are the quests that are not regular: the Drake quest, and the Courier quest. Those were fun, different, and with good dialogue. Keep 'em coming pl0x --talk Large 16:06, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
Nathe, if you're going to be a bad troll, do it somewhere else. Did you miss the part where a skeleton crew made this, and it's part one of three? Also, if you don't bring the default hero builds or builds made by /roll, it's really not that hard (in nm, at least). -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png 16:38, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
Armond, I create my own builds, for my PCs and their heroes, and I've been doing so for the whole 2+ years I've been playing. Never bothered with anything from PvX, I go with what I create myself. Most of the quests haven't been too bad, it was just that one with the ridiculously huge mob in the sewers. That's the only one I've had real trouble with so far. And you can thank NCSoft for being too cheap to let Anet hire more people for the Live Team. Companies are so terrified of taking risks these days that their content suffers for it. That and keeping it locked up with outmoded protectionist government-granted monopolies (aka copyrights) do nothing but harm. If we don't call Anet out when what they produce is underwhelming, not to mention months overdue, how can we expect content to get any better? Sorry if it came across as trolling, but I was aiming for dry humor, hence the emote - text doesn't translate it very well, though, unfortunately. But perhaps you should try making fewer assumptions in the future, just to be sure. It is possible for you to be wrong, you know. ;) User Nathe iconR.png Nathe 21:25, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
I get the impression, Nathe, that you think that ArenaNet is somehow obliged to produce all of this free content for you. But the truth is - they aren't, they gain absolutely nothing by catering to your every whim or by releasing any new content at all. You also make a point about NCSoft being cheap, please explain that to me because I can't seem to be able to grasp your inane logic. They're afraid of taking what risk? There is no risk, since the Live team is practically non-profitable, they gain nothing by giving you free meals. No company in their right mind would invest in projects that do not return funds in at least some way. Money is being wastefully diverted. In other words, your argument holds no water. And just who are you to "call Anet out when that they produce is underwhelming". I mean, you're getting a free meal and you have the nerve to complain? Get off your high horse, for Pete's sake. - Reanimated X 21:51, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Pike off, there are better places to bitch about capitalism than this. With that said, people have every right to complain about something if they don't like it. –Jette 00:43, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

On the whole not a bad start, if (as others have pointed out) a little repetitive thus far. Hard? No. More challenging than a lot of the older content? Yes, but that's part of the fun. I know a good number of my friends have been complaining for something of a challenge for ages- this gave us a little something to chew on at least. I managed to do these quests no problem without cons in NM on my Survivor Mesmer without dying, so it's not that hard. Heck, I steamrolled Silent Surf. Maybe a little imbalanced in the Shing Jea quests (Haiju Lagoon springs to mind), but overall doable. Not sure I want to take my Mes into HM though. ;) I'm looking forward to the next part and I trust that it will be less repetitive- Act 1 existing in this form to set the stage I'm sure. With these quests experience comes into play...not cons and pvx. You have to know what to play to get trough these areas, once you know how to you can do it pretty easy. There are still some difficult quests but even those with the right setup can be done without too much dificulity and no cons (DP removal being the exception). Da Mystic Reaper 16:55, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
I am, Nathe- I'm not claiming WoC is a cakewalk so far, but it's not as stupidly difficult as some people seem to think, either... at least not in NM. Anyone with a balanced party can do it, all it takes is a little caution with aggro. Even if you do overaggro, a balanced party can handle it I've found. Crowd control and targeting the weakest links works just the same as anywhere else. Once you take out the healers the mobs typically tend to drop like flies I've found. Of course, since the new healers are actually half decent at their job, that is still a small challenge to achieve. :) -- User Elveh sig.png Elv 19:04, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
They are not easy, that's true, but you must remember that they are end-content. They are quests that happen after the ending. Enemies are supposed to be challenging. Unlike normal enemies, their builds are not limited to Factions skills. The variety they have available is what really makes Eye of the North, WiK and WoC enemies harder than average. You no longer just thrash them like all the enemies before them. You have to adapt. That's the best part of these enemies. The bring the full potential of PvE combat in GW by losing the campaign skill limitations. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 20:17, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
And yet there's no lore explanation for how Canthan enemies can somehow use non-native skills. Interesting. Just as there was never a lore explanation for how enemies in EotN and WiK could use skills from continents they've never been to and whose professions had never yet been seen in that part of the world in-game in terms of canon. User Nathe iconR.png Nathe 14:41, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
I fail to see the reason why there should be a reason of lore behind it, players can travel trough all the continents and learn all the skills so can't NPC's do the same? If you thing outside lore-only logic you would not even need to ask such a question. Da Mystic Reaper 15:06, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

(Edit conflict) Whoever said that skills are, in lore, native to a certain place? The only questionable things are professions and they've been used outside their native lands since Nightfall (in the forms of rit and sin bosses only there though), so I really fail to see why its such an issue. Fun fact: Not everything in the game has lore behind it. My bet is that the location of learning skills is such (this is not counting the nativeness of expansion professions). And considering that charr have monks yet are clearly not praying to Dwayna and Balthazar, I bet you that they are only the non-native (or even native!) professions in mechanics only, and in lore they are what they are called and they merely serve the same role (healing and protecting other charr, for instance). Konig/talk 15:44, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Fine, but such could have been said in-game for clarity in the initial encounters with such enemies. And to get back on topic, I was merely trying to point out that not everyone shouts the "harder! harder!" mantra and that those who don't should be considered as well when creating content.
