Game wont open
WTF my game doesn't open it plays music and box comes up and stays like that --90.209.188.47 23:05, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- You need to be more specific about what box comes up and any messages you get. --Lemming 23:51, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- I'm assuming the "box" is the updater box before the game actually plays. If thats the case, give it a bit. The first time running GW is a bit difficult becasue of the sheer number of updates you need. -- Wandering Traveler 04:33, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- If it isn't the updater that's causing the problems, try a) restarting your computer, and b) reinstalling GW if that doesn't work. -- TERO talk 05:50, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- If it plays music, he's most likely in game at the login "box".
- Sounds like a hardware issue causing GW to lock up. Check your minimum video requirements. My laptop locks up there and says it overheats. ~Shard 23:42, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Fairness
Are the Characters for PVP and AB ect... Supposed to be on a level playing field so to speak? Because if so it has been my observation that they are NOT at least not for Rangers , I play a Lvl 20 Ranger and I have Lvld up numerious times since aquireing Lvl 20 and I have several Elite skills unlocked however when battling in AB it has been my distinct dis pleasure to be rutinely slaughtered by characters of other classes due to attacks dealing massive amounts of damage by that I mean 100+dam . After doing some carefull research it has come to my attention that most if not all other character classes can and often times deal well over 100 dam but not the Ranger oh no at best my Ranger can attk for a maximum of 60 dam and thats if I equip my Fiery bow , activate conjure flame , and attack with Barrage also I have noticed that a Ranger has no healing skills to speak of ....I know what you are thinking Troll Unguent or Healing Spring ha ha yeah by the time you activate either you are usually dead rendering them useless. I know that you might say that I can get higher dam attacks from second profession well problem there is a character with Ranger as primary profession doesn't have enough energy to engage very many atacks before running completly out of energy as many high dam atacks require alot of energy and most rangers only have min 25 energy and 32 energy at best how can we achieve unilateral fairness??--69.46.63.95 19:55, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- guild wars is not fair if fair equals balanced, but it's not that terrible. it depends on your build. also, do you refer to a pve character ranger? create a pvp character then. pvp characters get access to an equipment creation window where they can create max dmg/max armor equipent for free. as it sounds to me, you just have a non-maxdmg bow and a non-maxrating armor. nothing that doesn't ignore armor should be able to deal 100dmg in one single blow to a ranger. Signet of Toxic Shock is a counter example. it ignores armor and can deal well 100 dmg to any character. really, you as a ranger can own anyone, though, with the right build and skill. - Y0_ich_halt 20:02, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- I've had a lot of trouble caused to be my rangers, but not by damage. They specialise in other skills such as interrupts, conditions, traps and effects from spirits which can all be devestating if used correctly - it's less about pure damage power more about effective builds. Although I don't play Ranger so I can't give you any ideas. :p Check out www.pvxwiki.com for some inspiration. Biscuits 20:09, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- It seems that your issue with rangers is that they don't deal enough damage at once. PvP is pretty balanced actually, but it is balanced based on the types of advantages that each character class has. In the case of rangers, you're not going to have too many high-damage attacks. However, you do have a lot of condition-spreading attacks that can prove very effective. Skills like Apply Poison, Poison Tip Signet, Burning Arrow, and Glass Arrows are your friends, since they cause damage over time. This can be effectively used to pressure opposing healers by spreading these conditions over several enemy characters. As far as defense, you have skills like Lightning Reflexes, Whirling Defense, and Escape to avoid enemy attacks, and Throw Dirt to prevent them from landing attacks. With PvP (and PvE, really), it's all about knowing the strengths of your class and using them to your advantage, not necessarily matching up blow for blow. -- TERO talk 21:12, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- You can also learn from others. Open up the observer windows (B by default) and look through the games of high ranked guilds for teams with rangers. Keep the camera on the rangers and see what they use their class like. Concerning the damage recieving/dealing issue, you might want to create a pvp ranger (or look through the wiki) and check through the equipment to see if your pve character is lacking something. Your base armor level should be 70 and the base bow damage should be 15-28 Morgoth Bauglyr 22:06, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- It all comes down to your build. Rangers make up for weaknesses with their extra elemental armor; in AB, there's a lot of Elementalists running around, so you've got an unfair advantage against a lot of them. I routinely own people in AB with my Ranger, taking advantage of high-attack skills that can hit foes before they're within range to strike back; like Biscuits mentioned, PvXwiki has a lot of good AB Ranger builds, go find something, tweak it a bit to your liking, and just practice in AB. Once you get the hang of who to attack and who to avoid, Rangers are one of the hardest classes to kill. :D -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 11:28, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- PvP is supposed to be balanced, but it's not always the case. Rangers are more effective at interruption and causing degen than dealing damage. Some classes just have more damage capabilities than others. Leveling past level 20 does not make you stronger, that's why it's called a cap. ~Shard 23:46, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

condition max duration.
is there one... ive been meaning to test this but might as well ask here first Mashav 18:23, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not aware of there being a fixed maximum. The length is just worked out from the skill used, plus any effects that modify the length, such as mods on the inflicter's or victim's equipment, and any other effects from other skills. Biscuits 22:47, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- I don't think there's any hard cap, two necromancers should be able to bounce conditions back and forth indefinitely with Plague Signet. Tonics last 50 minutes, so if there is a duration cap, it's probably too high to test in scrimmage. -- Gordon Ecker 23:21, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

FPS
i would like to know what the little dot is in the bottom right hand of the guild wars screen that has fps....the game has been lagging pretty bad and my fps has been dropping..anyway i wanted to know if it had to do with internet, server, or graphics???? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:68.209.155.39 (talk).
- FPS = Frames per second. Anything over 20 is generally fine, except in high-quality graphics areas or close combat. Under 20, the picture becomes choppy. Calor 00:20, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- Also, the color of that little dot indicates your "ping" to the GW servers. Red means extreme lag, orange is borderline, green is good. FPS is in regards to your graphics, while ping indicates your connectivity, and is measured in milliseconds (how long it takes a packet of data to travel between your computer and the server and back).-- Wyn 00:33, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- If your ping is an arbitrarily high number (say, 1000 or more, perhaps), then it sounds like internet issues. If your ping is really low (less then 250, just about), then perhaps it's more of a graphics issue. Generally though, like Calor said, FPS isn't a big deal unless it's super-low. I believe 60~ FPS is the maximum the human eye can see, for that matter, so if it's anywhere close to that, then you're good. -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 04:42, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- 72FPS is the absolute maximum an eye can see. But it really depends on how, where, what and who is watching. If you're in a dark room with a distant bright source the eye will be totally happy with as low as 24FPS (for example cinemas use 24FPS). For TVs 30FPS is adequate. Your peripheral vision requires more FPS to have a smooth image (for example some people can see lights flicker out of the corner of their eye but not when looking at them). Generally younger people and women require a higher FPS. For gaming an FPS of 30-60 should be adequate (depending on the darkness of the room), any less and it starts to seem choppy. If it is getting choppy just lower the graphics settings for a better experience.- TheRave 09:53, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
slow guild wars....
ok so i just started playing after about 4-5 months of a faulty video card... and i know before i neaded to download the driver the game was loading fairly fast... so my question is should i uninstall the game and install it again to make it faster or, would i be wasting my time, and just let it adjust to the game again? PLS help me the game takes 30 minutes to load an area... thank you --209.112.150.166 04:29, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- You may want to spend some do a full image download to download any new content that has been added since you last played. This should speed up the load time when zoning between areas. I will warn you it does take several hours (even on a fast connection) so is usually best done overnight. For more detailed instructions see Command line arguments. -- Wyn 04:37, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
How do i do that?
- For more detailed instructions see Command line arguments.-- Wyn 05:15, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- Specifically, go to that page and look for "-image" for the instructions. What's downloading is not the graphics driver, but the game data. GW will download data only when you need them, that's why you had to wait. But that download only happens once (unless you uninstalled). Wyn just pointed you to the steps on how to pre-download the game data (preferably overnight, since you seem to be on a slow connection). -- ab.er.rant 10:01, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
ok so i dont get is what do i do after i put in "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image -windowed in the target thing... how do i start the download?
- Doubleclick on your GW shortcut, and have patience. It could take up to overnight. When the image has finished downloading, the update window will close. Don't forget to remove the "-image" part of your shortcut before you play! — kyrasantae 03:09, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
so all i do is wait on the login screen? sounds too easy.... but ill try it :D
- Well, no, not quite, you have to change the target line of your shortcut. If you right click on your guild wars shortcut on your desktop and go to Properties, add -image with a space before it to the end of the Target line and save it, THEN double click on the shortcut and it will force a download of the entire Guild Wars dat file containing all the maps, images, textures etc. It's something crazy like 80k files, so it takes hours, but will shut itself down when it's finished. Then you simply remove the -image from the command line and you are ready to play again. -- Wyn 05:18, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Getting from seitung harbour to the mainland
Hi Guys I'm sure some one out their will be able to help me, I got asked for some help in game with getting from Seitung Harbour to the mainland, I could remember their was a mission to get you a ticket from the first mate but when my friend went to the first mate this mission did not appear I think he has to do a mission prior to this to do with Za Daijun but I don't remember how to get it up or how to start it. He tells me he has no missions available in his quest log. If this is correct I am not sure what he should do. Graham Jackson 11:48, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- When you first get to Seitung Harbor, you can't get to the mainland yet. You have to complete the quest chain to get to Zen Daijun and complete that mission. That quest chain starts with Brother Pe Wan and is called Looking For Trouble. --JonTheMon 12:15, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
stacking items
I have searched and cannot find how/number on stacking items. I have an all seeing eye +1 (stacking) and 3 earth +1 (stacking) items and cannot find how to stack them or if they have to go on a certain item. Is there a certain combination or way to stack items or a maximum amount? They seem to be headgear and I have an elementalist. So the wiki shows they are for an elementalist but not what or how to make them stack.--Smcsw2000 15:21, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- Headgear attributes will stack, but attribute boosting runes will not stack. So if you have an earth ele eye with earth magic +1 on it, then you can stack, say, a major rune on it, giving earth magic +3. but if you add another earth rune to that, it will not stack. it will remian at +3. Does that make sense? I'm terrible at explaining things like this. -- Wandering Traveler 15:40, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- Expanded the part about this in Stack. Still needs to be cleaned up though. -- ab.er.rant 16:17, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- The key point is it's the modifiers or bonuses on the items that stack (or not) to produce a compounded effect for your character. The items themselves do not stack - i.e. you cannot wear more than one headpiece at a time. Biscuits 16:51, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

In addition, I tried to buy a skill with faction points. A message appeared saying that the new skill was unlocked, but after I could never find it or use it.
What is wrong?--Zen walk 04:34, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
- First, check your secondary profession, and make sure you are looking for the proper profession. And are you sure that it was skills that were unlocked in Boreal Station? I thought it was only heroes. -- Wyn 04:36, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
- I think that is exactly the point. The skills being "unlocked" doesn't mean that you "learned" them, just that they have become available for Heroes or PvP characters, or that you can buy them from any skill trainer or learn them from tomes. Also, you can "unlock" skills from campaigns you don't own yet this way.
- If you wan't to be sure that the skills where unlocked, check the skill lists for your heroes instead of yours.--Fighterdoken 04:42, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

- Anyway. If I'm reading correctly, Steam's "overlay" feature is for the chat and networking features, and doesn't actually modify the game. Just like XFire's in-game chat features, which is really only putting the XFire windows on top of the game, not in the game. Game balance question for PvE
Why do the npc monsters have unlimited spell recharge and casting abilities especially in HM? I believe the monsters should not be able to spam their skills faster than the players or have such massive spell points to make them untouchable. Serious issue areas are HM dungeons in EON and in Torment. And are lvl 29 to 30+ necessary especially since we are all only lvl 20. I like the challenges but I am a pretty good player but when the npc monsters can kill a party of players in a couple hits, This is just insane. I understand you, ANET could actually program the npc's to win but shouldn't they be balanced like you do to the players. Also as you will note this this isnt a complaint, but a serious question about the game mechanics.--Greyhawk of tyria 19:44, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hard Mode is called Hard Mode because it's intended to be just that... HARD. The increase in monster levels is to make players think, and use the synergy designed into various skills to win. Dungeons are also designed to be more difficult than average game play. All of them are beatable with the right builds and teams. -- Wyn 19:56, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Ah, yes I know that. But that does not answer the question. Why the rules which govern PC's don't govern NPC's? I wasn't looking for an explaination of HM since I know that. --Greyhawk of tyria 20:17, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
- Because they are NPC's and not players, so they already start out at a huge disadvantage. The only real advantage an individual NPC can be given is speed (movement, casting, etc.) since AI is technology is no where close to being able to out strategize "most" players. Finally, your questions would be better addressed to ANet, since as the heading on this page points out we are just other users like you and not ANet. -- Inspired to ____ 20:23, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

new files in my Guild Wars folder
Hey, so... today there was that new build with updates with skills, right. So then I happened to glance at my Guild Wars folder (NOT Screens or Templates; I mean the main Guild Wars folder), and I have these weird new files there that I've never seen before in all my 3+ years of playing: Gw.000 and Gw.001 Does anybody know what these are? I think they're messing with my ability to run two accounts at once. ^-__-^;; Which kinda sucks when you're trying to borrow your other account's heroes so your Survivor character doesn't, you know, DIE due to "brilliant" PUG's. I've tried deleting them, but then when I re-login, there they are again. They're like Fendi Nin in file format (i.e., THEY NEVER DIEEEEEEE). ^@__@^;; --Dragon nataku 04:21, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- Lol, yeah. I think that this would probably be a better question for support, but you might want to wait for some one with more experience at this stuff than me to see if they know anything. The Cabal 12:27, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I figured I'd have to contact support, but my past dealings with them have been... less than satisfactory. Plus, just cause I'm stupid with stuff like this doesn't mean everyone else on here is, so maybe somebody non-Anet knows something about it. If not, I'll just go ram my head into the wall, er, I mean, contact official support. --Dragon nataku 15:40, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Sunspear hero skills not showing up....
Hi all
I bought the sunspear skill (eternal aura) from Shiloh in Nightfall for my dervish hero. Shiloh took the 1 plat and skill point but I'm not seeing the skill showing up when I check under my dervish hero skill list. I can only see it when I change my secondary profession to dervish - then it shows up on my skill list only. How do I get this hero skill to show up under my dervish hero's skill list??
I even went back to Shiloh in case I hadnt done it right but when I look at the list of sunspear hero skills the dervish one no longer shows up. I'm not sure where I am going wrong here......Any advice/help would be really appreciated as I really want this skill loaded up onto my derv hero!
Cheers

- Eternal Aura is a Sunspear skill. Sunspear skills are PvE only skills. Heroes cannot use PvE only skills.- TheRave 16:04, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks "TheRave", 'preciate the quick response :) That will teach me to read the wiki a bit more closely before spending plat <g>
~Mel~
- Reading the Wiki article on Hero skill trainer wouldn't've helped much, as it doesn't say that Sunspear skills will not be learned by your heroes. Instead, it says: "To buy a skill at a hero skill trainer, the character must spend a hero skill point. The skill is then unlocked for the whole game account, and as the skill is unlocked, it will be available to any hero on the account. (...) It is important to note that, apart from the cost, there is no difference between spending a hero skill point at a hero skill trainer and spending a normal skill point at a normal skill trainer. Learning any skill for the first time unlocks it for all of your heroes, regardless of how it is learned." I'll edit the article later with a note about Sunspear skills and heroes, unless someone beats me to it. --Dragon nataku 16:16, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
inscriptioins on weapons
srry i messed up my first message, how do i add inscriptions onto my characters weapons, does it hv to be a pvp character, if not how do i add them to my weapons?--The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:68.113.145.78 (talk).
- Inscriptions can only be added to items that have an Inscription slot. Unlike the standard prefix and "of XXX" mods for items they can only be used on items that have "Inscription:" in their description. Currently this means any weapon not from Nightfall, or the chests that spawn after clearing Underworld and Fissure of Woe will not have them. And only blue or rarer weapons will have an inscription slot.
Having a weapon that you can add an inscription too, you just need to double click on the inscription and then click on the weapon. 75.146.48.190 20:36, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
ok but my character is pve does my character hv to be pvp b/c i cant add inscriptions onto my weapons.
- Both PvE and PvP characters can have inscribable weaponry. however, you cannot add an inscription to a weapon that does not already have an inscription. To clarify, you must literally see the words "Inscription:inscription here" (even could say "none) in order to add an inscription. -- Wandering Traveler 23:05, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

confused about 'stonefist'
it says knockdown for +1 second...max 3seconds (non-stacking)!! non-stacking = only one... how can that reach 3 seconds????
or is it, if i use a skill that make knockdown for more than 3 seconds...then 'stonefist' wont have an effect.
plz explain. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Lilleput (talk).
- Knockdown generally lasts 2 seconds. Max 3 seconds means that if the knockdown effect already lasts for 3+ seconds, Stonefist Insignia won't increase the duration. As for non-stacking, it means that 2 or more stonefist insignia won't stack with eachother, although I don't think there's any 1 second knockdown effects, which would make the non-stacking part irrelevant due to the 3 second limit. -- Gordon Ecker 03:25, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Automatic game updates
Hello, Is there a way to make the game updates not automatic, so I can view the update before it downloads? This last update corrupted some files on External hard drive immediatly after installing. One of which was ventrilo, making it inopperable. (unable to open) That whole folder was corrupted. Now almost every time I turn on my computer before the logon scren comes up I get a message saying that the e drive (my external harddrive where guild wars is installed) is corrupted and it needs to clean up some files. Do you know what could be the cause of this? Is it the update or is it something else? Is it just a coinsidence that ventrilo and other files were corrupted right after the update was downloaded? And is there a way to be able to view the update before accepting the download to prevent something like this from happening in the future? Thanks.
--RothShar M 17:41, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- As far as I know you can't disable the automatic updates. The main reason, I assume is that the game can't work with lots of people on different versions. Everyone has to have the same client and server versions (This is why different versions are different instances. As for the update corrupting the drive and other files, it could possibly be something to do with it being an external drive. TBH, that shouldn't make a difference unless you're adding/removing the drive a lot. I don't think GW was designed to be run from a removable drive so that could be it. My advice would be to contact support.- TheRave 18:06, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

lightbringer ranks - nightfall campaign

- What I'm understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) is that they won't let you acquire bounties for Lightbringer points in Vabbi/Sulphurous Wastes? 1) Are you talking to the right dudes? Before The Desolation, the LB bounties are given by Whispers Informants, but afterwards they don't have a specific name so you gotta hunt around. 2) After you reach a certain LB rank (I believe it's r6, but the LB title article isn't telling me right now), you will no longer be able to get LB bounties ANYWHERE in the game in normal mode. You will then have to beat the Nightfall campaign in order to get to r8 (Holy Lightbringer). --Dragon nataku 14:48, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

lightbringer ranks Part II
Many thanks for the helpful suggestions. What i meant was that Wiki suggests farming lightbringer promotion points around mirror of Lyss and another place in Vabbi by speaking to resurrection shrine people to get the bounties. They won't give me the bounties cos my sunspear rank is too high. guildwars - selling/buying items
hello,
I've been playing guildwars now for some time now (just over 2 years) and was curious as to how come guildwars does not have a "selling" system? Not to compare guildwars to other games, but as in World of Warcraft, an automated system where players could place there items to sell, so that other players may buy, would be great, and allow for more game time, and leave players satisfied without the time consuming "yelling of items" method.
I would also like to suggest (if possible) if weapons may been seen in the character log in screen and in towns and outposts (by choice) similar to how one has the option to show or hide their cape.
--99.251.34.130 22:04, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I'd guess that Party Search was intended as the "Auction" service, but it's hindered by the fact that it can't support more characters than about 20 in typing. However, there are many forum/auction services, like Guild Wars Guru. Give that a try.
- Also, you might want to try your suggestion here. --Chaiyo Kaldor חיו 22:08, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- There's no option to show equipment besides armor in towns or on the log in screen afaik to answer the other part of your question. If you want to screen shot them you have to step out into an instance, which will also be able to render armor at a higher resolution (though you can force hi-res armors in towns) 75.146.48.190 16:30, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- How do you force hi-res armor in towns? Biscuits 16:58, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

There is a high res armor mod here:http://www.k-u-n-t-z.com/ksmod/ksmod23.zip (the mod also adds UT sounds). You should note that Arena-net does not endorse the use of third-party mods of any kind.- TheRave 17:07, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Quest retake in Nightfall
I beat the nightfall campaign and for the title protector of elona,i need to beat Dasha Vestibule Cooperative mission.Where would i have to go to recieve the quest leading to the mission? plz note that i chose master of whispers--75.36.187.23 14:41, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Famed559
- AFAIK there isn't a specific quest to get there if you've chosen the alternative quest chain. To get there you can go from the Mirror of Lyss. The entrance is on the South Facing wall to the South East. Walk up to it and it will open.- TheRave 14:57, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- I think you still need to acquire Margrid the Sly to do Dasha Vestibule mish, though. You can do so through this quest. You have to have spoken to her in the Throne of Secrets, though, so if you didn't, you'll have to go and beat Abaddon again to talk to her (yay!). Orrrr you could just coerce a friend/guildmate/other associate of yours who has Margrid already to do the mish with you. --Dragon nataku 16:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- You can also join a party who is doing it and has Margrid, you don't actually have to have her yourself.-- Wyn 17:26, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
