A work-in-progress list of skills with more accurate skill descriptions.

Goals[edit]

Many skills aren't quite clear in their description. Rupture Soul Rupture Soul for instance centers its AoE on the location of the destroyed spirit; this can be guessed from its description, but it's not clear. These revised descriptions aim to describe the skill's effect clearly and accurately, so that you don't feel the need to check the skill's wiki page for an explanation.

Some skill descriptions are just plain wrong. Ward Against Harm Ward Against Harm isn't disabled, the Union Union spirit frequently takes less than 15 points of damage, and Vampirism Vampirism's attacks are weaker than described at low Sunspear ranks. These inaccuracies can make or break a build, and correcting them is the prime motivator behind creating this list. A description like this, that differs in functionality from the in-game description, is marked has having received errata.

Additional changes include:

  • Describing a common but easy to miss mechanic, such as Ebon Battle Standard of Courage Ebon Battle Standard of Courage's bonus armor being limited, attack speed modifiers being more potent than the in-game description implies, or PvE-exclusive skills being limited to players.
  • Adding green scaling numbers for skills that scale off multiple attributes, such as Critical Agility Critical Agility.
  • Using clear, consistent phrasing and terminology inspired by Magic the Gathering's card descriptions, the inspiration for this game's skill system.
  • Eliminating unnecessary repetition, such as the constant "if this attack hits", while retaining as much as possible of the long descriptions' flavor.

Formatting and Terminology[edit]

Green scaling numbers
  • Most skills scale off attributes. The green numbers indicate efficiency at attribute levels 0...12...15. This is the format used throughout this wiki, although notably different from the in-game formatting when you first unlock a skill.
  • Title-related skills scale off your rank in their associated title, typically reaching maximum efficiency at half the highest rank; at rank 4 for Lightbringer, rank 5 for Sunspear and Eye of the North titles, and rank 6 for Kurzick/Luxon titles. This scaling is listed with just two numbers, as 0...4, 0...5, or 0...6 respectively.
    • Some parts of these skills still only reach maximum efficiency at the highest rank. In these cases, scaling is listed with all three numbers, as 0...4...8, 0...5...10, or 0...6...12.
  • Sometimes, different parts of a skill will scale off two different attributes, or one off an attribute and the other off a title. In these cases, the part that scales as expected—with the attribute or title the skill is categorized under—is listed as normal. Any parts that scale in an unexpected way list the scaling attribute or title track as reminder text, like this: For 4...16...19 seconds (Critical Strikes)
Damage
  • Bonus damage from attack skills is listed as "+<num> damage". This bonus damage always is armor ignoring.
  • Damage from other skills is listed as "<num> [<type>] damage". If it ignores armor, it is instead listed as "<num> armor-ignoring [<type>] damage".
  • Abilities that trigger on damage dealt or taken are listed as "[takes/deals] [<qualifier>] damage".
    • Usually these skills trigger on any amount of damage dealt, as long as that amount is greater than zero. If an ability also triggers on zero damage taken, the qualifier is "zero or more".
Miscellaneous
  • Some text is de-emphasized with a gray text color.
    • PvE-only skills are marked as Can't be equipped by heroes or in PvP.
    • Some skills have de-emphasized reminder text in parentheses to explain a previous phrase or number or an obscure game mechanic.
    • Some skills are disabled in addition to their recharge time. This is part of the regular skill description, but listed as de-emphasized because you probably don't care about it.
  • Changes to attack speed are listed as the actual change on your attack rate, not the change to the attack duration stated in the in-game descriptions. Despite this, we use the same "attack[s] <num>% [faster/slower]" phrasing.
    • We list the actual modifier, rounded towards nice, round numbers. 49% and 50% are effectively the same number but one of them is much easier to think about, and both are clearly greater than the 33% described in-game.
  • Many skills that have a duration use specific terminology. Be as specific as necessary.
    • Effects can be applied in various ways:
      • You are enchanted by enchantments, hexed by hexes, and you enter a stance.
      • You suffer degeneration.
      • You are inflicted with conditions.
    • The terminology for being under the effect of a specific skill is different:
      • You are enchanted, hexed, and in a stance.
      • You suffer from a condition.
    • Skills can be reapplied by their own effect (echoes, some assassin enchantments) or when you cast the skill again while still under its effect.
      • If you want to clarify that something only happens the first time, use specific phrasing like when you cast [this spell] or when you are first enchanted with [this enchantment].
    • Effects can end in two ways: expire naturally when their duration ends or be removed by other skills. Effects are also removed when the affected character dies.
      • Some skills have additional effects that trigger when [this] ends. Rarely, this additional effect may also trigger when [this] ends or is reapplied or might have a more specific when [this] expires or when [this] is removed trigger condition.
      • Dervish skills might refer to you losing or having lost a dervish enchantment. This is identical to end.

Research needed & TODOs[edit]

Obviously this table is still missing most skills, but even with just the few listed here there's still open questions.

  • How does targeting work for Whirlwind Attack Whirlwind Attack and similar skills?
  • Is Lightbringer's Gaze Lightbringer's Gaze disabled or not? Notes on the page and discussion page seem to imply not, but don't use that phrasing.
  • Seed of Life Seed of Life's anomaly indicates that it triggers once per source. I suspect that each instance of the enchantment triggers, regardless of their source. Meaning that if the same player applies it twice, it should trigger twice.
  • What exactly recharges Sunspear Rebirth Signet Sunspear Rebirth Signet and the regular one? Morale Boost says there's two categories of morale boost and one should work. Talk:Powerstone of Courage implies it doesn't recharge the signets, but I can't find any other mention of that on any proper article.
  • We need a clear phrasing for skills that fail to activate in some circumstances, such as Never Rampage Alone Never Rampage Alone. Right now we just start the description with an if clause and that's somehow different to Necrosis Necrosis ending with an if clause.
  • Attribute level for summoned/created creatures would be nice.
  • I'd really like a nice phrasing for "apply this shout to all <targets> [who <condition>]". Right now, TNTF just uses the soulless effect language from the game. "Never Surrender!" "Never Surrender!" uses fun language but it's a bit awkward and won't work for many shouts.
  • The time scaling language on Wastrel's Demise Wastrel's Demise and Savannah Heat Savannah Heat is a bit odd, but these are the only skills with that kind of effect so at least it won't spread.
  • Foe or enemy? Which is it?
  • The note on "Together as One!" "Together as One!" implies that it affects all party pets, regardless of their location.
  • Vow of Revolution Vow of Revolution probably reapplies whenever you successfully use a non-dervish skill.
  • Not quite sure how Time Ward Time Ward affects skills after you walk into/out of it, and whether or not multiple time wards stack.
