A Gate Glitch is the crossing of closed gates (or similar thin boundaries like fences and barricades) while getting hit by a foe in melee range.
This mechanism occurs in some cases because of the collision box between player and foe (responsible for bodyblocking). When this happens, the game will move the player away from the foe, resulting in an access to otherwise unreachable areas.
This is often referred to as minion trick or masterless minion trick since it is possible (and easier) to create a foe out of thin air by using Aura of the Lich and then making the summoned minion masterless.
Getting access to otherwise sealed areas greatly benefits Cartographers, as areas that are normally out of reach further contribute to the Cartographer title, but also to runners, to gain early access to outposts that normally require the completion of quests or missions.
Gate glitching is famous for being the only way to get access to the Elonian character starting area for non-Nightfall characters and for allowing the players to skip a large part of the Canthan questline (see Outpost runs (Factions) for more information).
The player's build doesn't really matter, but self-protection skills such as Shroud of Distress or Shadow Sanctuary and/or area healing skills such as Heal Area to heal the minions (if a beginner) is advised. A hard resurrection for the minion master can be useful too.
