I loved that great Rit and Para buff, but I don't know how they can sleep at night knowing there are still crappy skills in this game, eg Lamentation, and the massive power creep with Necrosis over Discord. --smøni 13:23, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Because Lamentation was lolhax in spikes when it came out. Apparently Ritualists get really, really overpowered when you take a lot of them at once (like everything else). Necrosis really isn't better than discord, for a few reasons: first, unless you have pitifully low death magic and very high SS rank, it still does more damage on the same energy cost, cast time and recharge. Second, for a necromancer skill, neither of them actually has a trigger condition unless the mob you're fighting has RC or something (and there's only one monster in the whole game who uses it, so that's pretty unlikely), because necros get more stupid spammable AoE hex and condition spells than any class in the game. I will admit to you, however, that both of them are disgustingly overpowered (and Discord is really no less powerful in PvP, it just isn't run for some reason, probably something to do with the people who would use it (i.e., faggots) not having realized that 1 extra second of casting time does not an underpowered skill make, especially if you're a bad enough dude to use your 40/40 set). --Jette User Jette awesome.png 13:51, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Can the term "power creep" be used for PvE? Huh....never heard it that way. But anywho, yes, Lamentation is bad....but there's a whole myriad of skills that are just god-awful that I hope they get to (the majority of them are elites). And I hope to god they've fixed the XTH (they already said they've worked out the points...so why haven't we gotten them?) and added some sort of content to the game. So the hopes are: skill update, content, and XTH. I doubt we'll see but one of those things, but it will be nice to have anything at all after last month. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PVP NEEDS A SKILL UPDATE! Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 13:55, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) In PvE, Power Creep means that foes become harder and higher level with more pew pew. You see that through Prophecies-Factions-Nightfall, with EotN levels being the about the same as Nightfall. Titani Ertan contributions 14:09, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

I'd say that power creep is most visible in PvE because basicly all that happened between proph and eotn was stronger monsters vs stronger skills (especially when the pve only skills came out) its basicly what titani said. However in PvE you don't have to play against monsters with both skill and skills (I'd say that you need to be rly rly rly rly terrible to have the iQ of a monster)Lilondra User Lilondra Sig.jpg*poke* 14:44, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
I meant Necrosis is creeping on Discord because it's a new skill, and it's alot more easier to use than Discord. Yeah sure, applying a condition isn't hard, and I think most people have an SS rank of 6 or more. I've got a Necrosis spammer build on my Mesmer, and 80 damage every second or so doesn't seem like it should be allowed. EotN gets on my nerves with all the condition and kd spamming wankers, and it's like a hardmode factions or nightfall or something. Maybe not that hard, but it defo has power creeped. Thanks for reading that. --smøni 16:03, 4 August 2009 (UTC) (This was 666 characters, that freaking pwns!!)
If you're gonna QQ about a skill at least get your facts right before you go off the deep end. Necrosis has a 1 second casting time, and a 2 recharge, so you are NOT going to get 80 damage every second. It does less damage than Discord, but has the slight advantage that it's easier to use. Hell what's next QQ'ing about YMLaD, cos it does armour ignoring damage and causes KD and cripples it's target. I know some of you don't like PvE skills, but heck the mobs have PvE skills to Spectral Agony, or Twisting Jaws anyone? Anon-e-mouse 12:03, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
"Every second" is more a way of speech than literal meaning. Discord can kick Necrosis ass in some instances, but in other ocassions, Necrosis>Discord. And that means lots. Besides, Necrosis doesn't waste your elite slot, doesn't require attribute points, is spammable, is cheap, is cheap, and cheap. YMLaD is much a less of a problem simply because it's not spammable. And in PvE, it's not worth bringing more than 2 copies of it, than things like, I dunno, insta-gib? Your Monster skills were amazingly bad examples: Spectral Agony is either the most powerful skill of all, or Power Shoot. Twisting Jaws is so OP it's not funny: It should be tuned down from it's seat of pwnge, especially since you got 50 copies of it charging onto you. Titani User Titani Ertan chrome.png Ertan 12:56, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
"Every second or so" != "every literal second". Also, Twisting Jaws is manageable when it's the only source of damage that actually effects you thanks to SY/TNTF. The whole bloodspam thing gets annoying, though.
And yeah, YMLAD is pretty overpowered. It's basically gale - attribute - cast time - drawback + damage + extra snare. It's the ultimate interrupt while also great defense. A lot of the norn skills are awesome like that.

Could someone point me to the post/page in which ANet announced that there would be an update in August? (whether official or on one of the ANet employee pages). My memory is that they said that they wanted to focus developer attention on on less-frequent, substantive updates, for example every 3-4 months. I don't recall it as a promise to release 3 times a year, however I cannot find the original post. Thanks.   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 17:01, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
There was an update in April, the 4th month. 3-4 months mean July, 7th month to August, 8th month. Since the July update was so amazing and spectacular, there should be an update in August. Titani contributions Ertan 17:07, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Erm, yes, I agree that July/August would be 3-4 months after the last major update. My question: when did ANet make the promise of every 3-4 months? I can't find it. Thx.   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 17:15, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
It's here. Word for word it says, "Content updates will be done separately from the monthly maintenance and occur every three to four months." Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 17:21, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
You all have to know there has never been a "promised" release date, and Anet has NEVER provided release date specifics. Their policy is and has always been that updates will be released when they are ready, and not before, so hounding them about it is going to get you exactly where it has always gotten you... nowhere. Give it a rest, enjoy the game as is, or go away until the update is posted on the wiki, but stop with the whining already. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 17:41, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) KJ: thanks for the link. To my eyes, that quote (even out of context) reads as a stated goal rather than any kind of release schedule, promised or otherwise. I suspect that ANet would be better off if they would discuss their plans more often so we didn't feel the need to interpret to death the few words they do post.   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 20:19, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

If you read the rest of the dev notes from that update, you'll notice that they say exactly what you just suggested. Basically, that they will communicate more with the player base. But if anything, I'd say communication has been on the decline. Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 22:28, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

September 17 Update

moved to Talk:Game updates/20090917

Please

If there was one update whose talk page I could go to and find solely intelligent discussion instead of an equal number of users spitting out their drink/grabbing their crotch over the same change(s), I would be happy. If this were real life, and you complained so horrendously about every tiny setback that was done out of your control, you would be ridiculed. There are two possible outcomes of every update:

  1. Your build got a nerf too powerful for your intellect to replace any part of it.
  2. It didn't.

Luckily, each one has its own excellent solution:

  1. Keep playing, enjoying a game that--quite uniquely--actually changes winforms every now and then.
  2. See #1.

Thanks. | 72 {U|T|C} - 20:50, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

What do you mean, changes winforms? I fail to see how the meta has changed at all in a very long time. -- Tha Reckoning User Tha Reckoning Sig.png 22:07, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, generally it goes by eighths: e.g. Mantra of Resolve was 1/8 of any winform involving it on the skillbar. Now, it (probably) is not. This is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. Auction House

Did you know that an auction house was implemented in Factions Alpha testing. The town marketplace may have been named such for this reason? There may be more than one purpose to the name I suppose. But due to being able to only utilize this feature in international districts they scrapped it. Which also proves that people at anet know nothing about economics. Thus making several game designs worthless, such as green items and all chat. Having to price fix the ecto and shards at the trader to fix the economy. GW economy would be a great example of the current real-life economy. No movement of goods, services, or currency. But since you don't have to pay for rent or food in GW you slowly accumulate worthless internet wealth. Knowledge is PoWeR. 99.145.46.158

No, they do, and you dont. You're looking at it the wrong way. My guess, as unfounded as it is, is that you can cash in the rewards for quests already completed, even though you cannot accept new ones. You know, I stopped playing because I lost interest. The lack of a feasible skill update in close to three months is irating. You can say GW spoiled me, but it was the regular skill updates is what kept the game interesting for me, especially after clearing all the campaigns and quests. After a good four years, It's lost it's flair, and I was hoping a skill update would at least draw me into some PvP, as it always did.

Guess not. -P.Gaston --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 98.116.158.151 (talk).

You rarely get people using "it's" for two different things in the same three-word phrase. :P But meh. People lose interest in games for all kinds of reasons, and personally, I drift in and out of GW interest and always have, updates or not. Considering the fact that I don't care for Shadow Form and farmers don't affect my day-to-day playing (except maybe to reduce the cost of ecto. Thanks guys!), when SF is nerf/changed I don't see how it would excite me or lure me back in any more than, say, walking out of Cavalon and remembering how cool the Jade Sea looks on any given day. | 72 User Seventy two Truly Random.jpg (UTC) 16:47, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Actually, they did. They made an official announcement that "This is our last skill balance update before moving officially to a bimonthly schedule.", followed by a justification as to why. Source Generally when a company officially announces a change: say to a bimonthly schedule with a pretty link to their official website, it's going to be bimonthly as mentioned. It's more than a promise, it's becomes company policy that it will be such. Think of it this way: a pizza company has a policy "we deliver in 30 minutes from your time of order or it's free"... ~~000.00.00.00~~ 19:42, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

^ . And even if there were, that was in the past. GW changed too much, too much shit has happened. — DarKNeSS (Contribs) 12:08, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
I think you are missing the fact that one of the major reasons EU dist's are empty these days is because alot of the player base migrated to the American servers. I for one am based in Edinburgh and yet I haven't been in an EU district in about 18 months and the same goes for alot of my EU friends. Their is however no denying that the game is losing players. However the good thing about it being free to play, is that when updates do come those players can come back, if they so wish. I am in agreement with alot of peeps above though, GW is slowly dying, but then it's an old game and that's what happens with games over time with little substantive new content. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 12:20, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
GW may be old, but it still has no competition. The only thing that shares its genre is Chronicles of Spellborn, and that was a distaster of epic proportions. So the only reason people would leave the game is because of a lack of change. Koda User Koda Kumi UT.jpeg Kumi 12:35, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
Koda - wat? The only unique thing Guild Wars ever had was PvP, and without competition, even that's not worth doing. The PvE is vastly outdone by mainstream MMOs (i.e., ones that offer actual reward for PvE grind and have actual economies and auction houses and the like). People leave Guild Wars because there are better options that are more balanced. Hell, Aion is more balanced than Guild Wars right now, and Aion is a huge pile of ass (and I'm talking about PvE balance here, not PvP). Seriously, what real MMO has maintainable invincibility that is allowed to exist for over a year? People leave GW because of terrible design decisions like that one. MapleStory starts to look promising after years of watching ANet fumble around.
Salome - for years, the place to find groups for PvP has been international district 1. Go to HA id1 now. I actually logged in the other day, during peak American hours, and counted roughly 30 people in the district. Back when I played, there was always 5 or more districts in that time period, and in peak euro hours there was usually more. By the time I stopped playing, the average number of districts had dropped to 2 (but id1 was still really, really full). Now id1 is empty as shit. Dead game is dead. The only time I ever see people on is during holiday events, and it turns out to be 100+ districts of people being afk; even the holiday events are designed to be afk'able because they're so godawful. -Auron 12:52, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
Auron, I would agree with you completely, but there's one point in which I disagree: there are some PvE players who don't want grind to be rewarded, and so GW's PvE has one reason to be better than that of most MMORPGs. Erasculio 13:00, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
Granted Auron, the PvP community is pretty dead. That is to be expected though considering the relative unbalanced skill sets, shocking power creep and stale meta which has existed for the past 2 years. Don't get me wrong, I agree the reason that the game is dying is because of many of the terrible design choices which have been made over the years. In PvP you have no new challenges being added, no new maps, no new content other than unbalanced skills being added forcing gimick play and that has been the case for years now. In PvE you have over a year of Ursan, over a year of perma-SF, not to mention countless other things which should have been corrected wihin the week and never were. Added to that you have no real substantive reward for playing PvP any more and the reward for playing PvE is not worth the effort or time required for alot of it. The game is suffering from a lack of new content and this has showed itself over the past year. My guild was thriving 14 months ago, with 90 members who were active often, now we have the same number of members but only 6 of them are even slightly active. I have heard the same reports from across a broad range of friends in many different guilds, their is no denying that GW is dying and this is due to the state the game has been allowed to degenerate into. Which is a sad thing to behold really. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 13:07, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I think the tl;dr of this is that Anet won't ever cash the check that GW wrote when it was a good game, and they won't keep their word, and that (for the most part) assassins and balance failures rule the jacked up inbred child of what used to be a fun game. -- Tha Reckoning File:User Tha Reckoning Sig2.jpg 13:48, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Auron, Guild Wars also pulled away from the "kill X number of monsters" "collect X number of items" type of generic quests that every MMO out there has an abundance of because they have no imagination, and that is an accomplishment to be considered unique as well. As for the PvE grind, there is actually one main reason, and that's for skill pts to buy skills. But really though, is there a reason to grind most MMOs besides raising your level? For example, WoW = grinding for gear, WAR = for renown, Aion = for abyss pts.
Every MMO gets stale and if you play it long enough, the challenge disappears. I swear I was looking for the END GAME screen playing WAR after about 5 months. WoW has no PvP to mention, except for 3v3/5v5 arena, 2v2 doesn't count. But for it's PvE, you do enough raids, you see the pattern (Stay out of the flames), and most new bosses become almost a one-shot cakewalk. GW is no different. PvE has no real challenges to mention, except for elite areas, and for most they were only challenging for the first month or less after introduction. For PvP, without the skill updates, players would be using the same cookie cutter builds and what challenge that gave is gone. Really though, there is nothing to do right now except biding time until the next big MMO comes out. — Gares 15:35, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
I'm waiting for ToR to come out. I'm sure Anet is happy to know that most of their former customers are going to be paying for better games than GW2. -- Tha Reckoning File:User Tha Reckoning Sig2.jpg 20:08, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
GW still has the highest metascore on Steam, tbh. User Raine R.gif is for Raine, etc. 21:55, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
Assassins didn't ruin the game. Gimmick builds did and the machine of laziness and greed that caused the builds to flare up in the community, it just so happens the builds were generated from an elite skill of the Assassin. I guess all 10 professions ruined the game back when the war-cry was "Nerf Ursan!", right? Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә User Aliceandsven 1.png ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 00:48, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Spirits

I don't know when this might have started, but playing my Ritualist today I'm noticing that several enemies will actually retreat if you cast spirits in their area. I'm Not sure if this the right place to bring up this issue or not but its been far to long since paragons have had anything nice. All I'm saying is they could use a Big buff in all areas! When they first came out in October 27, 2006 Paragons where great there was nothing wrong with them, and since then they have been slowly reduced to a "Cute little mini pet that toss a tooth pick! Are they not suppose to be like guardian angels? I mean Shouts are all they really have to make a difference, I mean sure it helps others here and there but what about the paragons them selfs. Also in the description for the paragons it states " Through insight, they help others resist Hexes and Conditions! ... well Conditions yes very much so but Hexes.... Not at all.... NO wait theres one just one. That takes 8 adrenaline to use PLUS its only useful if your using a spell (How about them apples!?) Theres a time for a change and that time needs to be now! I think para is in high need of an update and buff in all areas, some of the skills I refuse to use because they take SO long to charge up and the conditions applied to the skills in question make them worthless, I play Imbagon, but its boring, and really think a buff for the para should have come before mesmer. Mesmer was not really broken and now they are too overpowered but who cares? Lets nerf everything then make the worst class the strongest so that everyone has to go caster? oh joy, caster. Who wants to play warrior when they can be a caster? <sighs ME. I WANT TO PLAY MY WARRIOR. It is easy, the least played is often considered the worst. Logical. Rogueonion 18:06, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, but you learn otherwise when a good mesmer gets you by the balls in pvp. Hell, even the bad ones can do significant things post update. -- Tha Reckoning 18:43, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I concur, however they were doing rather significant things pre-update. which was my point, ele's have become outdated and should be deleted since mesmer now does their job, wars cannot do crap now post update, shoot melee in general is having trouble post update. but they fail to see (I wonder if they even tested this from the perspective of other classes?) that this supposed "balance" had an UNBALANCING effect on other classes. I apologize if i insulted you, that was never my intention, I just think they need to rethink how powerful they made one class over all others, and I think that whomever said it was right, "mesmers are not supposed to be flashy, they are supposed to suborne and do things that are not very noticeable, because THAT is what a mesmer is," <- not a direct quote but the gist of a paragraph, and they did that rather well pre-update, Rogueonion 18:49, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I agree that mesmers were in a good place (more or less) pre update. You had A) VoR/Backfire buttonmashers, or B)Any of the balanced mesmer builds, like powerblock/pd etc. Now, all you see is VoR, and Esurge/mind wrack. That doesn't make your warrior any less playable. I took mine out last night and destroyed all the mesmers running e denial with no distortion or anything. I haven't seen a single ineptitude/wandering eye/clumsiness mesmer, either on obs or in matches, since the update, which is surprising. I see bsurges far more often, see the mAT final. So far, it seems melee are still in the same position they were in pre update, which is definitely better than the alternative. -- Tha Reckoning 18:56, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Granted, though, I haven't been on a whole lot lately, I was /raging at what happened to mesmers. -- Tha Reckoning 18:58, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I hear you, I guess the places I have left are the ones with all the nasties, go check out Magus Stones, Salt Flats, Skyward Reach, oh man how about this go fight some WiK npcs, they are all secondary mesmer these days, or is that thirdeary? whatever the word is, some of them have 3 professions, And in hard mode the mesmer enemies ARE very much spamming ether feast, to eat your energy up, No joke, we were fighting oh god the stupid plant things outside ToA my alliance in a vanquish and every one of the players was ether feasted into no energy, nobody could phys attack because of clumsiness spam, we didn't party wipe on that group, but as soon as we hit greves and HIS group all of whom ended up being secondary mesmers, we had some issues. Anet killed 4040 sets, so monks can only cast 25% faster now, and that is hardly enough to counteract hexes on such a large scale, then add in all the spell slowing skills, which causes a lot of slow speed times which is even worse for hex removal, they really over did this update thats just the way it is, I think that mesmers really need to be toned down. Since I cannot play the game, I post here how idiotic is that? be a caster < because phys attacks just don't cut it anymore. Rogueonion 19:07, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Ah, pve. My advice would be to tank and spank, anywhere and everywhere. Anyway, I was under the impression that the cap didn't affect 40/40 sets. -- Tha Reckoning 19:11, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

seems to me cap affects 40/40 sets, I have used a 40/40 on my monk for ages and I no longer benefit from it, Rogueonion 19:14, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Alas though I digress here into mesmer talk when we should be talking about paragons, I have legendary survivor on my para, that was fun, but alas after buying/capping all skills, I realize most of them are crap. Rogueonion 19:17, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
and after some careful thought, I posted this in response to someone questioning the 12 second recharge on most mesmer skills...

if you read the fast casting update you will notice that every rank of it reduceds recharge by 3% making all mesmer skills at max fast casting spammable skills, which in my opinion is WHY the update needs to be retested from the perspective of other classes, there is no getting out from under hexes now, you can bring all the hex removal in the world but BECAUSE they now insta recharge, they reapply them pretty much instantly as well, <I mean... really... do the math... Rogueonion 19:43, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

There aren't as many mesmer monsters in PvE, and the spell recharge doesn't work in PvP. What's the problem? You get Empathy, you stop attacking, no biggie. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 13:08, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
LOL you dont fight mesmers in PVE? what 3 zones do you go to on a regular basis? I see mesmer monsters EVERYWHERE that I go. Rogueonion 18:03, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
Not all of them have Empathy. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 18:38, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Mith you are correct the ones that usually do not have empathy to spam have clumsiness to spam instead=) Rogueonion 09:10, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Discord, sabway, smitemonks, SY!, proper hex removal, good pulling, good playing and not caring about PvE all popped in to say HAI 79.203.68.58 16:44, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Update 25/11/2010

There was an update about 10 hours ago, is there some note regarding this? Erebo85 15:37, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Stéphane posted a description of the update on guru. http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/lack-update-info-t10460449.html?p=5317164#post5317164 . Can someone add it to the page? Darcy 19:34, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
Done. --Silver Edge 19:54, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Update

This is what happens when you don't update the page fast enough. Remember that people actually playing the game want to know what's changed. Rolain1 02:12, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

If by that you mean, get updatin' yer pages or we'll vandalize the heck out of you, I'm sorry, but we don't negotiate with terrorists. Everyone is free to add whatever was changed in this update to the update page. Or was, 'till they started vandalizing and I protected it. WhyUser talk:Why 02:48, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
I'm sure your e=peen is now huge from your awesome prot skills. But the point is that if you don't update a page when anyone who still plays this game is on this page, don't be surprised when people do frankly hilarious shit. More to the point, you're a wiki user for a 5 year old MMO, not someone in government. Please grow the hell up. Mmkay? Rolain1 03:01, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
As I said, people who still play this game are free to update pages. I just happened to stumble across vandalism. Thanks for your contributions. WhyUser talk:Why 03:06, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Wait, you're vandalizing for shits and giggles and your response to "stop or jail/ban/prot" is "grow up"? -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 07:45, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Nope, I didn't vandalise anything. Check the update page history before making your ridiculous accusations. Also, <2c> this is a pretty good update </2c> Rolain1 21:03, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

Embark Beach and Map From Guild Hall

Not showing up on map unless you actually hit map at Great Temple of Balthazar. Is it supposed to be that way? --VintageRose 22:10, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

To unlock the outpost, you must either visit a port town or get there by talking to a Zaishen Scout. If you simple go to the guild hall without doing any of those two, it won't appear in the Battle Isles map. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 04:56, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
