Regent Valley, near where he was in pre. A suitable place to start.Backsword 02:54, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Indeed. :) - John Hargrove User John Hargrove sig.png talk 03:01, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Specifically near the southern res point in Regent Valley near the portal to Pockmark. The location is actually illustrated in the post-searing screenshot of him in his article on gw.com. He's looking for Red Iris Flowers. Pkohler01 03:11, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Pretty unexpected location, I've searched everywhere else except Ascalon. Does this suggest his locations won't be entirely random but prescripted? Or it's just the first one like that?--YawgYawg 03:14, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
It's looking like he will follow some sort of path, he is in Traveler's Vale this time which is not all that far from ascalon, but i guess it could just be chance.~Sower~ 16:30, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm curious as to how he's meant to be found each time. Are there clues anywhere or is it just dumb luck? Briareus 04:03, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Dumb luck Im sure. Enough people play this game that he will be found. What did it take, like 2 hours this time? And he's there for a week--96.225.150.180 04:07, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
I believe he should only be at this location until end of day Sunday PST though, since he packs up as the weekend ends. Every other time he moves though, yup, he'll be there for a full week! - John Hargrove User John Hargrove sig.png talk 05:36, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Quick note, 'next to portal to Pockmark Flats' sounds like really bad English.--iRathur 06:17, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

250 Red Iris Flowers

Is down to 249. (I had 250+14 flowers) Gwen was not impressed, unfortunately. --8765 07:03, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Your math sucks. 250+14 isnt 250, its 264. The correct thing to say would be "264 red iris flowers is down to 249."--96.225.150.180 09:25, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
He was referring to the ingame stacks (one stack of 250 and one of 14, seemed obvious to me)...guess your game knowledge sucks. ^^ 145.94.74.23 15:56, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

5k iris flowers

WTF?!?! I farm irisis on gwens garden for free! I hate hillbilly profiteers! You are reading this. Click. 08:02, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Some people don't have EN, or don't have any left over from Pre-Searing, or otherwise don't have access to the Irises, :) I saw someone buying them for 40k in Fort Ranik, and was serious about it when my boyfriend asked. If people are buying them for prices like that, well... people will sell them for that, too, :) Elysea 13:53, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
I just realized that the flower collector is Gwen...nice hint, Nick. :P Benjammn311 17:09, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Does anyone know if he will always be collecting the flowers or will it change with his location?--213.106.88.106 18:57, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

It will always be an item related to his location, so it will probably change as well. poke | talk 19:00, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
Would also be pretty boring if he was just a red iris flower collector that changed location every week that you could only trade with 5 times per week. I'm thinking of placing him near all the mergoyles and gargoyles in North Kryta Province and collecting their skulls. 217.60.105.2 08:01, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Research page

I began a Research page at Nicholas the Traveler/Research. It's essentially just a copy of the one for Nicholas Sandford. Fenyx 22:20, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Only Once a per account per a week

It should be noted that you can only trade one per an account per a week with him. Wynterarwynrose 02:09, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Is it 5 gifts per week or one trade per week? -- User Gordon Ecker sig.png Gordon Ecker (talk) 08:18, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
5 gifts per week i tested this on my first visit cause i only farmed 6 flowers to see if it worked like pre. It does except a weekly limit instead of a daily limit. User Tenri My image.jpg Tenri 08:28, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Same amount of items?

I haven't been over to talk with Nicholas yet, do we give him the same amount of the item he is asking for as we would if he was in pre-searing? Iskandr 15:31, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

For the Red Iris Flowers he wanted only 3 per gift. We'll have to see if that is the default amount for all items. User Xelonir sig.pngXelonir 16:49, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

He hasn't moved yet

I wondered if he would this week on Sunday, but he hasn't. Benjammn311 14:55, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

I suppose Sunday at midnight means he really changes Mondays at 12:00:01am PST. --KOKUOU 14:59, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
I was possibly thinking that he might not move this week since his time there was only 4 days or so. /shrug Benjammn311 15:01, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
I thought he changes location at the end of the weekend (according to the Guild Wars news page under the navigation on this wiki), which would mean Monday at midnight. Gold Chocobo 20:59, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
Sunday night/midnight = Monday morning/midnight. I have changed the text to remove that ambiguity. Tennessee Ernie Ford 21:35, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
Maybe I'm pre-emptive, but he still hasn't moved. It's currently 3:15 AM EDT, so he should be gone. Benjammn311 07:15, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Is he still accepting flowers? If you already reached the limit, is he offering you more gifts? Maybe B311 is correct and that he'll take extra time this week. Tennessee Ernie Ford 07:17, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
He is not. Benjammn311 07:18, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Hmm is it possible that he is going to move every thursday, since that's when he was originally implemented into the game? In that way, it would be a week between each move. Paddymew 14:48, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Gwen

Has anyone brought Gwen out with them to retrieve gifts? I'd imagine there's a chance of dialogue between them. 128.255.195.88 21:59, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Tried it, no dialogue, shame would've been quite a cool feature 81.106.16.151 23:13, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Wow. I'm surprised and a little disappointed. ANet's usually pretty good about those types of easter eggs. 128.255.195.88
Yeah, when I read the dialogue, I thought of bringing gwen out, but I'm not terribly surprised. There is a 6 year difference technically from when Nicholas is in Regent valley and from Eye of the North. (I think, just know post-searing to EN is 6 years, never says how long Nicholas stays in Ascalon mourning Mary's death). Although wording does suggest that he wasn't in Ascalon 8 years after Mary's death... -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 07:30, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Hmm if we are to assume that NPCs that you speak to talk loudly, bringing Gwen with us should allow her to hear him talking about her. Pretty weird that she doesn't react though :/ Paddymew 14:49, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps she simply doesn't remember them, and he doesn't recognise her. I can easily imagine Gwen failing to realise he's talking about her -- not only does he fail to mention her by name, but knowing Gwen she'd be too busy angsting in the corner to bother evesdropping. --Mme. Nicholas Traveler Traveler's Vale.png Mar Talk Master 16:36, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

I wonder how geography-bound his journey will be. Judging from his dialogue, his current position is hand-picked, and he really is "travelling" instead of popping up somewhere. Its a bit too much of a coincidence ANet released a wallpaper displaying this guy and his yak in a blizzard, isn't it? Will Kryta be next, or will he be going north? WhyUser talk:Why Are We Fighting 17:14, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
He is on a quest to fulfill the flameseeker prophecy!!! All joking aside, I thinking he probably is traveling as opposed to popping up randomly. I suspect he will make it to Kryta, but then I think he might pop up in any of the 3 campaigns. That brings up another point: Factions was a couple years (storyline) after Prophecies, and Nightfall a couple years more, correct? If that's true, why not have him in all 3 campaigns at once? That would be possible since they are supposed to be different time periods, right? Gold Chocobo 17:22, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

That makes him a chronomancer ---- Alexanderpas Talk|Contrib|Guild 22:40, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
I had the feeling that the "Traveler" Would go to Travelers Vale next. Just seemed so right... Anyway, what if he is following the path of the story? From ascalon to shiverpeaks to Kryta To Maguuma To Desert To Southern Shiverpeaks To Fire Isle then the other continents. Like the guy before me said, He IS a traveler, which means hes not just gonne popup randomly.(77.208.1.61 23:35, 27 April 2009 (UTC))
Prophecies and Factions take place simultaneously, storywise. Nightfall is 3 years later, and EotN another 3 years later. - Tanetris 23:57, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
If Prophecies and Factions take place at the same time, how is Mhenlo in both Cantha and Tyria? Mr.Hobo 23:52, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
The beginning of Factions (Shing Jea) occurs as Prophecies ends, thus, when Mhenlo returns to Kryta, he gets the message and heads to Cantha. Therefore, not in the same place at the same time, not occurring simultaneously, just one after the other. -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 01:16, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Bolts of Linen

This is crazy, they are all gone, plant fibers, bolts of linen... --Soulforged 17:37, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Getting 75 plant fibers to craft 15 bolts of linen should take you less than 20 minutes out in the wild. Starting with 0 linen and plant fibers (with both sold out), I completed this collection faster than zoning in and out of the Eye last week. --Mystisteel 17:45, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't understand why the trader only buys linen for 140. Right now they are more scarce than ectos, yet so cheap? 76.84.34.210 19:25, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Whenever an item goes "Sold Out!" the price fixes on the price it had just before it went "Sold Out!". It is similar to what happens with items like Orange Dye, those items have a supply way higher than their demand, but the Trader never offers you less than 10Gold. -- BlackHoleSun 21:24, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
I don't see what the orange dye thing has to do with this - the trader never offers you less then 10Gold because that's his minimum offer, he can't go lower. Anyway, while the situation is kind of absurd, I think it's still better then having dramatic price fluctuations every time old Nicholas asks for something new and people rush the trader in order to make a killing on it. Nate User talk:Nate Alluran 23:40, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
To be honest it's not even that bad, you can buy them from players in yak's bend for about the same as it was cost to craft the linen from plant fibre. Of course you could just go to the following page Category:Drops_linen and go kill a few monsters. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 23:59, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Finding The Traveler

Well.. good news so far. He's been by a portal in both cases thus far. If the pattern keeps up, it'll be much easier to find him when he moves then many people had thought. Magic 22:25, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

That a serious question? xO *starts counting* -- BlackHoleSun 22:54, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Done, there are 355 portals to explorable areas in the game.
Please note with most portals he may appear on both sides, while with others (portals to an outpost, dungeon or most portals in Elona) he can only appear on one with of the portal. -- BlackHoleSun 23:19, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Would it be safe to assume that he is working his way through Prophecies first, then possibly Factions followed by NF? so far he's on a path to LA :) --Craz1 23:41, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
nevermind, just read he travels ascalon.... --Craz1 23:43, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Technically he's already LEFT Ascalon, and my understanding is that he's traveling the world. On the other hand, he does seem to be only moving a relatively short distance - following the trend, his next stop will probably be heading down Lornar's Pass, hiking north to the Far Shiverpeaks, or, probably most likely, continuing west into Kryta. Of course, once he gets to Lion's Arch the places where he could show up next expand exponentially. Draxynnic 01:46, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Chances are that he will appear in the games landmark locations such as the random statue of glint or the shiverpeaks temple of grenth. Chaos Beserker 15:16, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
Boy, the Temple of Grenth would be a great place, and an experience for a number of folks. I imagine a lot of grumbling if Nicholas set up camp there, and multitudes of run offers. I actually find the area rather fun to explore. The area has it all, avicara, dwarves, imps, giants, wurms. Good times! Ralmon the Gen 02:45, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
According to his dialogue in Pre-Searing, he was planning on traveling the world. For Dull Carapaces he mentions Kryta, for Icy Loadstones he mentions the Crystal Desert, for Skale fins he mentions Cantha, and for Worn Belts he mentions the Shiverpeaks and Elonian Leather. So I think we can expect a cross campaign tour. It'll be interesting keeping up with him. Sardaukar 12:31, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

I wouldn't be surprised if he turns up in the Ascalon settlement in Kryta, either next week or the week after...Hyper Cutter 19:18, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, thought so, 52 distinct locations (if he doesn't repeat) could be a lot... we'll see. --Nekki 20:29, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
52? How do you get that number? There are 52 other Prophecies explorables, but what prevents him from going to the other continents and EN locations? And I'm sure he'll show up more than once in different regions (of which there are 18 not including Core locations, 21 if you do). Seriuosly, what about this UTC thingy... Ther's a PDT, SDT and I don't know all the timezones... Isn't its just easier to enter at what UTC time he will appear/relocate since there is n UTC clock on the top of the page??? All these timezones make ppl confused... I wote for UTC antries only, no PDT and all those other zonies... :D Cheers! --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 80.217.137.217 (talk).

I posted the new map in PDT, because that's the time when Arenanet makes changes. You will obviously note that my signature had the UTC timestamp. Please sign your post with 4 '~' chars. Mar Talk Master 12:47, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
PT is apparently the time that ArenaNet staff think in - I agree with you that UTC would make much more sense on a wiki page (and not just because I'm British :D) Also, I'm not quite sure of the relevance of signature timestamps being in UTC, other than to underline my point. --snogratUser Snograt signature.png 13:02, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
Actually it is not so much the staff as what the operating system thinks the wall clock time is that matters. The game wants to do something on the Sunday to Monday transition and asks the OS on the server for a reminder at that time. Since the server is in the Pacific time zone, it sends the reminder at midnight Sunday night/Monday morning. The OS also keeps track of the difference between Daylight and Standard times. On the other hand, when talking to each other, the people on the WIKI need a global time to avoid confusion. UTC is the standard for global time. (And it is technically a standard of French origin, not British, although there is no functional difference.) --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:mtew (talk).
I did know it was a French thing, mtew - I suspect something to do with the history of enmity between France and the UK and the fact that the French would never use anything that's a British standard (i.e. GMT, the hitherto accepted standard). But I digress - this is all about formatting of GWW pages and we're in agreement that it needs to be in UTC :) --snogratUser Snograt signature.png 15:12, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
I dunno about the US where Anet originates from, but the daylightsavings time (i.e. GMT +1/+2) makes me all fuzzy :P Wouldn't it just be easier it Anet signed all their updates/changes with a UTC timestamp as an actual service, intead of million players sitting at home, trying to figure out at what time the Traveller will move on? :D 80.217.137.217 15:54, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
If you look at the earlier version, it did include all the UTC information. Some of that information is now missing. As for ArenaNet's location, check here. And for the daylight-savings thing, Ben Franklin's Folly give everybody (with a few exceptions like politicians) the 'pip'. --mtew 16:28, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
Whilst we're on the subject of pedantry, it's singular: Daylight saving :p hehehe --snogratUser Snograt signature.png 19:45, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Really confused, new edit on the page went from 7:00 UTC to 8:00 GMT, UTC is exactly the same as GMT (Except for historical dates) so was the time wrong? --Nela 23:25, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

PST is UTC-8; PDT is UTC-7. Why they changed from UTC to GMT, I don't know, other than the fact that people change perfectly good things all the time. Though I note, if that person is reading, that I'm staring at a UTC clock at the top of my wiki page right now, and not a GMT clock.
All of which is not really why I'm posting. I'm posting to add my opinion that the time just be only in UTC since theoretically wiki users can look up at the top of the page and see what the UTC time is, which I think someone else mentioned as well. It really doesn't matter what time it is at ANet when the change happens as long as the time is comprehensible to the wiki users, right? Xylia 03:42, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
We've had the time discussion dozens of times. While the wiki clock is in UTC (which is the same as GMT), ArenaNet's announcements and times are in Pacific Time, since that is where they are physically located. The general practice here is to use those two times as the standard. If someone is unable to calculate where their own timezone is from either of those, I suggest they use Google. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 04:04, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
And if this were an ANet announced event I would understand that. However, as it's purely a piece of wiki documentation, I don't. But, whatever. (And yes, I realize GMT and UTC are equivalent, which is why I don't get why it was changed, my comment was meant to indicate that. I forgot the sarcasm tags around it I guess.) Sunday 24:00 vs Monday 00:00 ?

Not sure what this should be, just my gut is saying it's 00:00... or just say Midnight Sunday :) --Nela 18:24, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

23:58 → 23:59 → 00:00 --TalkRiddle 18:41, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
It's optional. In my job (London Underground) we use 24:00 purely for trains that depart at that instant. Anything thereafter is 00:01 etc. Using 00:00 is just as correct - the only problem I have is, when someone says "midnight Sunday," is that 24:00 Saturday into Sunday or Sunday into Monday? I know it's the latter, but it always makes me stop to think for a while. 00:01 Sunday would be unmistakeable ^_^ --snogratUser Snograt signature.png 19:43, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

(editing conflict)It was a guess by the "once a week" - according to last week, he moves every Monday at 10:00 AM U.S. Central (which would be 8:00 AM Pacific, and 15:00 UTC), i.e., about 7 hours 15 minutes to go according to last week. Might be less, might be more, maybe it's a different time and day each week!-- Azazel The Assassin\talk 07:46, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Remember: on his first move, he didn't leave the old position until 01:30 PT (still 45 min away). ANet originally promised, after the weekend; now, the official site says, he moves after a week. We have collectively assumed that meant at the same time as Nicholas Sandford. (By the way, he moved well before 8 am; we just didn't find him that quickly.) Tennessee Ernie Ford 07:47, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Most annoying collectible item yet

OK, so red iris flowers, kind of annoying. But not hard to pick up. Linen, pretty easy by killing plants in Watchtower Coast with a fire ele (plant fibers galore). But this... linked to one quest in one campaign, for an untradable item, grrr. Not only that, but the quest itself is evil. I can't count the number of times I've had problems convincing Toma to actually eat before heroes and hench kill the foe. I hate this quest, dislike this collectible item, life is pain.

Now that that's off my chest, I guess it's another week of waiting to see if Nicholas is collecting things I have to give him. --Nkuvu User Nkuvu sig button.jpg 15:54, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

As I've mentioned on GWO, I just hate the associated quest. I generally prefer to not buy things like these, I'd rather collect them myself. But in this case I may just end up buying the Juni berries (now that there's confirmation that they are, in fact, trade-able) just because I really don't like the quest.
Also, I should have made it more clear, but this was generally just a rant -- now that the rant is done, I'll point out that I'm not really upset by this. (ri) So I played with minions and self-sacrificing heroes. I'll take a moment to mention that I wish Elder Jonah wasn't color blind. He kept healing the minions (red! they're red dots! not green! stop healing them!). The best I got was 2 juni berries per run. The timer cut off at 20 seconds one time when Toma had somehow managed to eat 14 creatures (and there were still more he could have eaten in that time). Getting the hang of the run, plus doing enough runs to get to 15 berries, took far more than eight trips. So yes, I still hate this quest. On the plus side, for my other account I just bought 15 berries. It may not make financial sense (I doubt I can make 20 platinum in the time it took to do the berry runs), but it was very satisfying. I know other people might not hate this quest, but I really really do. I'm very glad to be done with this for the week. --Nkuvu User Nkuvu sig button.jpg 21:29, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

As much as I love repetition I wish when they do things like this they actually fix the quest (Woot, and extra 20 secs... no wait... it lies) and the AI of the creature (woot, this kournan is way below 20% but not yet dead... ohhh, he decides to kill it instead of eat it.............". 000.00.00.00 21:35, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

OK, maybe an analogy will help illustrate my point. Imagine a food you don't like. In fact, it's a food you really detest. Let's say... slug flavored ice cream. Mmm, slugs. Now there's something offered to you if you have 15-20 servings of slug flavored ice cream. That's not a whole lot of slug flavored ice cream, but are you going to enjoy the process? --Nkuvu User Nkuvu sig button.jpg 14:59, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
You have a week to farm, and it takes about 3 minutes a farm *just because it's timed*. It's not as bad as "slug flavored ice cream" trust me. Even if you are slow, it won't take more than 45 minutes to farm 15. Enough for one account. -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 15:29, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure why it's a hard concept, but... I don't. Like. The. Quest. At. All. Does it take long? No. Is it particularly hard? No. Did I say it was either of those things? No. Did I say I don't like it? Repeatedly. Should I emphasize that my personal dislike of the quest doesn't indicate that it takes a long time, and should I emphasize that my personal dislike of the quest doesn't indicate that it's a difficult quest? Apparently. Because I keep getting the same replies over and over and over. But I really can't explain it any more clearly than I already have, so I'll stop trying to explain this whole point. --Nkuvu User Nkuvu sig button.jpg 19:23, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
I hear ya Nkuvu... I did it a few times, got bored after the 2nd time, quit after the 4th farm with my 6 branches... I purchased the rest at a respectable 1k ea that I'm willing to pay to save me the time... those who say its only 3 mins need to get out a stopwatch and actually factor in all the extra fluff time (leaving the sanctuary, walking to the quest giver, leading toma, walking back to the questgiver, zoning)... Its a boring quest that people only really ever do for the one branch for the mini moa... I'll be happy not to see this one again on nick for a long time MrPaladin 19:28, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Just try and find a more annoying repeatable quest that gives you a stackable item, or a trophy that can only be found in one place, preferably one that cannot be directly entered from a town or outpost. (Hopefully they're all already set, and this doesn't give them any ideas!) Freedom Bound 16:02, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Um... dude... I'd rather farm this than any other "normal" monster collectable drop. This way you have a guaranteed drop (I was getting 2 per 4-min run). Any others will also cost more to buy, as they're more difficult to find. I don't know what you're complaining about. Sure, it's boring. So skip it. BIGFINDEAL. People who like to complain just to complain shouldn't get involved in what they complain about. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 18:58, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Sheesh, you'd think that I kicked your puppy or something. I'm sorry that I expressed my dislike of the quest (and I will point out that I already said I didn't think it was a big deal, by the way). But I will never express my dislike ever again, everything in Guild Wars is happiness, peaches and kittens. It's all perfect, forever! --Nkuvu User Nkuvu sig button.jpg 19:36, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Nkuvu, you shouldn't take this personally, at all. Usually when someone posts a comment like yours, it starts a discussion, and people reply to each other, get off topic, misread things, post while drunk, etc. Most of these replies do not even direcly apply specifically to what you said, they are more general comments on the topic. You posted your opinion, someone else posted theirs, and it's ok if they differ, nobody's kicking any puppies. If you post something in a public place while realizing that many will disagree with you, you should expect replies like that. ;) User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 08:03, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Map

IMO we shouldn't use a map image which needs to be updated every week due to caching and maintenance issues. PUGs

Because of all the juni berry farms lately, people have been getting into PUGs to farm them as heroes and henches attack the enemies. I got all of my Juni Berries through PUGs, dear god it was hell. I've made some calculations to check what's the real value of the gift. Some ppl sell them even for 12k each in Kamadan. So i've made this sheet http://kukuryku.ovh.org/gw_wiki/gift_of_the_traveler.xls Prices taken from guru, chances from Gift of the Traveler/Drop rate

Lol interesting spreadsheet, I always though they were much personally anyway. Price of the mini's will come down quickly too, plus we can't really gauge the correct drop rate for mini's yet as there is definitely not enough entries to correct for the variances. Nope, this is pertinent information. For example, if I'm a new or casual player I might find these items very difficult to get and wonder if I am doing something wrong. The information that yes, in fact these items are annoying to collect, tells me that that is just how this item is and really there's no point in me trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong/how to improve. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:65.184.76.241 (talk).

It's terribly useful and relevant to have (on talk pages) farming techniques for the traveler, such as last week's discussion of using minion masters to feed Toma. They should stay and even be encouraged. The wiki is nothing if it's not to provide information. --Emkyooess 18:41, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

I suggest we move this part over to the discussion on Mandragor Roots itself as that would be a more appropriate place for it, drop reasearch would suffice. RandwulfX 19:04, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Oh I didn't realize wiki only supplied information to expert players. I thought it was supposed to be a resource for those who actually needed it. I said new or casual, in other words the average player. But way to jump on that one word and turn the whole conversation around.

Anyway, MAYBE it would be better to move this to the mandragor root discussion page. However it's also pertinent here. It's simply a matter of opinion as to whether or not the difficulty of Nicholas's requests is of informational value or not.

And just because one forgets or chooses not to do something does not mean they do not know how. But how is attacking me pertinent on this wiki page? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:65.184.76.241 (talk).

This should be on Talk:Mandragor Root, or at least the bulk of the discussion. --JonTheMon 19:53, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
The talk pages are to discuss the article pages themselves, not for people to have a wee natter and how they want to go about farming things. However as said by Jon, if this convo is to be on the wiki at all, it should be on the mandragor root page, not here. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 21:07, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
I'm sorry but even if we did agree on the point that there should be information on the relative difficulty of collecting the items, the first two posts on this discussion do not even constitute an affirmation of that. If this page is not used in the correct way in the future it may have to be protected to save our sanity. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 21:34, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

The troll-fu is strong here. Perhaps "Getting some roots" could have segued into "Here are some good methods of obtaining this weeks item" which is perfectly on topic and useful to anyone who came here seeking information on Nick. But alas, NOW it's a "spam wall" (lol) and it's about the authority and elitism ("sign your comments or i trol u") of wiki's pseudo-librarians rather than something useful. Am I signing right? ~~ ~~ ~~

Almost, it's 4 ~'s all together without spaces. ;) Lol, troll-fu. ^_^ Why do people never agree on a medium? It's always the extreme of something... User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 04:19, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
I have already offered a medium. I've said that it is perfectly permissible to put a wee note about where best to farm these things and even a very short description on possible run locations on the relevant item page itself. However including farming build information and the like on every page for everything nick ever asks for is simply not viable and clutters up the page with pointless information that people will only be interested in for a week and it is not what this wiki is for. We have very general skill and build advice contained within the walk through on primary quests, missions and dungeons because those pages maintain a constant interest by the player base, but having the same information contained on every possible nick item is just not maintainable nor desired for a wiki of this size. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 12:41, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
We don't do builds. That's for PvX. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 12:58, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Yer the PvX Wiki has a vetting system to work out the "best" builds... since really all you need is a group of people to slam the enemys that carry these in NM I hardly see why Farming article specific to roots is really needed... Grab some friends and have fun as the game was intended (in a group we were seeing about 4-5 roots every time we went out per person) MrPaladin talk 13:02, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Incidentally, PvX is doing exactly that here. It seems people have decided it is exactly the kind of thing PvX does and are willing to do it on a weekly basis, so if you don't mind sending traffic off-site, perhaps a link to that guide would remove some of the less desirable aspects of this talk page. Misery 13:04, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Cross wiki links are fine, but it's more appropriate on the item page, rather than on Nicholas' page.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 13:26, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Map

Do we really need a map of the region Nicholas is in for every week? Could be misleading. This page gets changed several times already, but most people should be able to find him using directions from the links of the location. --TalkAntioch 16:10, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Yes actually i think it's very cool to have a map of his exact location. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:65.184.76.241 (talk).
Personally, I find a lot of directions on quests / missions without maps much less useful than a good map, and it's really not hard to keep this page current... (I'll add the map myself in a few hours when I have the chance to get on if no one has done it by then) -- Chrono (talk) User Chrono007 sig.png 16:32, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
The map has been updated now, but the problem lies in the Wiki's slow to update cache. It can sometimes take hours to process the new image change. Perhaps if we handled the images differently, then it might be better.
How about uploading the image under something like File:Nicholas the Traveler location_dd_mo_yr or the like? That way every week someone can update a red link for easy upload and the cache stays current. The downside is it could take more space, but I think the wiki can accommodate. --TalkAntioch 16:35, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
I though we already decided that: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Talk:Nicholas_the_Traveler/Archive#Map and yes I think that's a good idea. -- Chrono (talk) User Chrono007 sig.png 16:42, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
I think the servers may be able to cope with some extra pictures, the amount of rubbish that gets uploaded for the user spaces every day is much higher. I agree, name it different for the sake of the cache if anything. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 16:43, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I've checked that archive link (thanks for that Chrono007), and we should be doing that now. "Annoying Collectible"

Just asking to all the people that found the juniberry's annoying: Did you get these roots easier then the juniberry's? (without buying them) --User Karasu sig.png Karasu (talk) 17:12, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

IMO, juniberries were easier. A run would take 4-5 minutes, and you could easily get 2/run and do it solo. Mandragors, you have to get a group, and even then the drops are pretty random. --JonTheMon 17:16, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Someone's going to say, "the wiki is not a forum", but... Personally, I did find these easier, since you don't have to try to *not* kill something. Much easier to go out and wipe out a bunch of red dots than try to "feed" some uncontrollable NPC. Freedom Bound 17:18, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
You have more control over farming roots, although it's still subject to luck. Unlike juniberries however, if your farming screws up, it's pretty much your own fault. --128.54.74.143 17:22, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Not only do you have more control, but you also have more choices. The drop table for mandragor roots lists Arkjok Ward, Bahdok Caverns, and Sunward Marches. There are also mandragor in Jahai Bluffs and Barbarous Shore, although I don't know for sure if those drop roots. But if I get tired of Arkjok, I can meander somewhere else. I also can go out and kill mandragor and get things aside from just the juni berries, so all around this is more satisfying.
Regarding the "wiki is not a forum" gripe some people are having: Show me a forum where ArenaNet developers regularly respond and I'll bring my talk there. --Nkuvu User Nkuvu sig button.jpg 18:44, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Not really our job to supply an alternative though Nkuvu. If people can't think of a better way to contact dev's thats a shame but it's still not really our problem. Using the wiki as a forum however, just piles the talk pages with needless chatter which shouldn't be here as it doesn't further the communities understanding of what is being discussed, all it does is convey individuals opinions which aren't very helpful. If it is any help however i think Regina is over on guru an awful lot. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 10:37, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
I am just going to second Salome here, if any more discussion on "how hard it is to get the roots", "are the roots harder than the berries" or anything else that is not directly related to the content of the article in question of this talk page we will be forced to protect this page next week until people can use it correctly. There are plenty of fan forums out there if you wish to discuss the matters mentioned. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 12:41, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Whatever. I'm sorry to have tainted your precious wiki with something so irrelevant as talk. It's attitudes like this that make me shamed to be involved with the wiki in any way. Unfortunately the developers (hint: That's not Regina, she's community relations) have chosen the wiki as the sole point of contact to the players. So I'm forced to continue to use the wiki if I want developer answers to my questions and responses to actual game problems. But given the high and mighty attitudes presented here, I sure won't be adding anything to the wiki. Good job. --Nkuvu User Nkuvu sig button.jpg 13:25, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

(Re-indent) Lemming/Salome: could you explain again why you think this Talk page needs protection? I think one of the most interesting things in the game-within-the-game right now is the volatile market in items-of-the-week (and the now stabilizing market in items-of-the-day). Personally, I want to see even more information here about the search for the GotT grail. Perhaps a compromise alternative is to create a subpage (e.g. Nicholas the Traveler/Requested Item Farming) that would concentrate on the meta-game aspects of Nick's presence.

However, in the absence of an in-wiki alternative, where is the harm in allowing people to post here? 1-2 days a week, people are going to get very excited about Nick's new item; why not let them express that passion here? And how does this page deserve more protection than, say, Talk:Heavy Equipment Pack or User Talk:Gaile Gray, which have walls of text not directly related to the content of the article (HEP: the gold- or ecto-value of zoins, the fairness/unfairness of the zoin price, ...) (UT:GG any numbers of off-topics) Tennessee Ernie Ford 15:08, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

I've asked for support for that line of thinking on Lemming64's talk page, but I would also like to chime in with support for TEF's solution. Freedom Bound 15:16, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Well, as has happened recently, I think that perhaps on the day of his change, protecting the page right up to the point where he moves. That would prevent "OMG HAS HE MOVED?!?" spam, but still allow discussion and collaboration for finding him again. --JonTheMon 15:19, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
This discussion has been had before on the wiki, and generally some discussion is tolerated, however consistent edits to the talk pages moaning about how difficult it is to obtain "this weeks" item are not constructive or helpful to anyone. The first post in this particular line of discussion highlights exactly what I am talking about. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 16:00, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
@Lemming: I appreciate the quick response. You say the conversation has been had before. Could you point me to it? I'm still unclear how a discussion on a talk page is bad for the wiki. Typically, I wouldn't propose to re-open a decision made earlier, especially since I wasn't around at the time. However, I believe the circumstances have changed: these new features (Nick Hunter, Nick Traveler, and z-quests) all require daily or weekly updates, whereas most topics have static needs. We have already found the need to create new templates (item-of-day, item-of-week) and added new subpages (z-quests).
  • So, does anyone object to the creation of a subpage to separate the item/farm discussion from the Nick discussion? (And does anyone have a better name than Nicholas the Traveler/Requested Item Farming?)
  • Does anyone object to the idea of protecting this talk on Mondays until there's a sighting by a trusted wikian?
And perhaps it would make sense to move discussion of these two ideas to the community portal. Tennessee Ernie Ford 17:34, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
I am always open to debate and discussion and reaching a common ground, so please forward the debate the best way you see fit and I will aid you anyway i can in doing so. However as said by lemmings above, it is not ALL chatter which is the issue, it is the sheer amount of pointless chatter. If people can keep it relevant thats cool and I'm happy for that to continue, however pointless forum type posts simply dont belong here as they do not add to the wiki knowledge or aid anyone in anyway. On this page this week we have the following pointless edits: (i hasten to add this isn't meant to be a dig at any user, its just an overview of the type of edits which shouldn't be made on NPC talk page.
  • Has anybody found him yet?
  • naw im gunna be lookin so he has moved?
  • Just get on with it. CHOP CHOP MOVE IT MOVE IT. Find him NOW!!!
  • They are 7, 23, 25, 56, 67, 89. HA
  • There isn't a 67 or an 89 to choose
  • And Move it
  • You may have forgot these to look for so.
  • will be annoying. agreed?
  • agreed (in reference to line above)
  • Just asking to all the people that found the juniberry's annoying: Did you get these roots easier then the juniberry's?
and these are just the most obvious examples til about half way down the page. Needless to say though their are many more examples from all over the page that I omitted for brevities sake. Edits/discussions like the following however are perfectly acceptable:
  • CONFIRMED.... Arjok Ward, Mandricore Root Cake.
  • Does he require 1 or 3 of these for 1 present? Nvm I just noticed the main page got updated, it's 3
  • It's 1 cake per gift
  • I donno, but it seems like any other type of quest in the entire game to me... they are either Fed-Ex, Killbot, or Scavenger... (IE, take something to a location, kill something at a location, or get something and bring it to me)... I don't think its worth mentioning unless you wanna flood every quest with this type of trivia?
  • Agreed. This kind of trivia is merely irrelevant.
I hope people can see the difference. In the latter case people are discussing the article itself and the content there of. In the former people are just discussing personal random stuff or their personal oppinions upon the difficulty of attaining the item the NPC wants. It doesnt help anybody and nor does it add to the content of the page. I dont think anybody would argue otherwise unless some of you want us to add "This week the collectible wanted is a ball breaker to attain!" and then we could revel in the joy of getting a whole host of people coming in and saying "well i can do it, cause im leet!". As both Lemmings and I have said, pertinent debate is great and encouraged as we do take a pretty chilled out view upon the wiki/forum cross over point, but alot of users on this page are taking it far over the margin into just pointless random subjective viewpoints.
I truly hope this wee blurb hasnt offended anyone, I'm simply trying to illustrate the basis of my reasoning so as to foster greater understanding between those on the other side of this debate. :) -- Salome User salome sig2.png 17:59, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
"...consistent edits to the talk pages moaning about how difficult it is to obtain "this weeks" item are not constructive or helpful to anyone" (Lemming64) It's called feedback. Some companies use feedback to improve the quality of their products. Of course negative feedback is thoroughly frowned upon on wiki pages, as I've already experienced when discussing last week's collectible item.
Talk pages are not significant server resources, and unwieldy chatter can be archived like has been done already. So all of the arguments I've seen for staying on topic are trivial at best, and the threats of locking the talk pages just seem like power trips.

As a couple have stated in reply already, yes it sounds like feedback, but this is not the place for feedback. Sorry to disappoint you. As for power trips I have stated it is not my aim to lock this page, I am trying to prevent it being necessary. It is not a matter of server resources, it is a matter of being able to find useful relevant discussion for bettering the wiki itself. As I have stated, moaning about something here does not solve anything. Arenanet read plenty of forums, like guru for example, and have stated they do so if you want to give feedback. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 22:02, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm going to add the two suggestions independently to Guild Wars Wiki Talk:Community Portal, since it seems like people might have strong opinions. (I will leave this discussion untouched.) Tennessee Ernie Ford 22:31, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
I don't think this talk page is bad enough to warrant protection/discussion about protection/"this-isn't-a-forum-stop-posting". The size is ok (this sections happens to be the largest), policies aren't being violated, discussion is still readable, and the discussion is somewhat useful (opinions about how easy it is to farm the item-of-the-week actually help me to decide whether or not I would be bothered to farm it). Discussion about improving the article seem to be clear enough to find and discuss (see the section below this as an example).
Evidently some people don't agree. How about we watch the condition of the page over a few weeks and see whether this "forum-like chatter" gets worse (to a point where anything else is hard to find or read) or if the page remains 'containable', and whether it's hard to administrate with policy violations flying about and whatnot? I'm assuming the traffic will go down as Nick gets less 'new' (i.e. as time goes by), but we'll see.
It probably doesn't need to go on the community portal talk, this is the best page for such a discussion; however, a request for comment may help to get more opinions. --User Brains12 circle sig.png Brains12 \ talk 22:48, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
I agree with TEF to create a separate discussion on the items he collects, and posting a nice big pink notice at the top of this page to direct people there. All "irrelevant" posts from this talk can then be moved there, and problem solved, you don't have too see it if you don't want to, but those who want to rant can do so 'til their eyes bleed. Protecting this talk page is hardly a solution. How are we then going to find out when and where Nick has moved? Create a separate Nick Tracker page? (lol) Protecting is to avert repeated vandalism of mainspace articles, not to prevent discussion on TALK pages. In the latter case, it would just seem like saying "Hey, you're all stupid and are talking about stupid stuff some of us don't want to hear, so we just won't let you talk at all, HA! STFU NOW!" It's ridiculous... User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 22:51, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Well, whoops on my part — I went ahead and added two proposals to the CP. (I wish I had thought to listen to Brain before he posted! Much better idea to request comments and direct ppls here.) Anyone/everyone has my permission to edit them mercilessly and move them to an appropriate page.
The two suggestions are mutually exclusive, so I think it's helpful to treat them distinctly. Tennessee Ernie Ford 22:56, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Relatively new to the wiki, but would like to add a few things to this "discussion on whether or not this is as annoying as last week's collectible" -
  • I found some good info here last week on suggestions for speeding the Insatiable Appetite quest. Obviously this is not a "hard" quest, but consistently getting 3 berries instead of 2, which helped a lot (as I hate to farm). Thank you to those who posted ideas - I found it helpful and relevant.
  • This week's collectible made me shudder (been worried about Nick collecting trophies since he first popped out), but after reading here and hearing "yeah, it really didn't take that long", I think I'll go for them instead of paying the outrageous prices people are asking. Thank you to those who posted about this - I found it helpful and relevant.
  • I do not find it helpful to be discussing whether or not we should be discussing things on this page. In fact, folks have spent a lot more time talking about whether or not we should be discussing things here than they have talking about mandragor roots. Just look at the giant wall of text above me decrying the act of "filling up a talk page with irrelevant information" - all of which is totally irrelevant to Nicholas the Traveler. Ironic, no?
People (obviously) can argue whether or not discussion about collecting mandragor roots has anything to do with the article - and you're all very entitled to your opinions. However, I would like to see someone justify that mandragor roots are less relevant than the flame war above me.
In summation: I found the talk useful, and some other comments lead me to believe some others do as well. Yes, there are other forums, but what does that have to do with whether or not people should discuss things here? I propose:
  • Folks take this discussion elsewhere. If you are truly against "discussion not related to the article" on a wiki talk page, why add more?
  • Just because some find discussion about Toma irrelevant, doesn't mean that others do. Why not go with the Wiki spirit and put it to a vote or something, rather than asserting authority. Leadership is action, not position. --The Penalty Of Sin 16:07, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
PS: Just asking to all the people that found the juniberry's annoying: Did you get these roots easier then the juniberry's? (without buying them) --The Penalty Of Sin 16:09, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Welcome to the wiki. In response to your post, notice where you said "other forums", that seems to be the main flaw in your reasoning. This is not a forum, it's a wiki and talk pages are for discussing the attached article page, not for general chatter concerning how hard it is to farm. As misery said above, PvX wiki loves the farming chat and their is even a supplied link concerning the weekly farm for nick's stuff, which can be found HERE. Thus the discourse about farming should be over there, not here. Also this debate is about the use of this page in particular, thus its most pertinent to be included here than elsewhere. Personally I think a good compromise for all parties would be to put that link to the PvX article at the top of the talk page and direct everyone who wishes to discuss farming Nick's wanted item to its page, that way everyone is happy, pvx gets more people interested in it, people get to discuss farming and the WIKI isn't being used as a forum. Win/Win :) -- Salome User salome sig2.png 16:34, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Whether or not this is a forum is debatable. The fact that you and I are posting back and forth in the internet means "forum" in my book. :-) As others have pointed out above - Nicholas is a little different than most because he changes every week. Whether or not this SHOULD be a forum is what folks are talking about. I mean, you are telling me that is not a forum because we're at guildwars.com/WIKI, but then point me to pvx.WIKIa.com/WIKI. Really, though, that was a very small part of my post, so I wouldn't really call it a main flaw in my reasoning. My main points are:

  • There is more talk on this page about whether or not this is a forum than there is actual "chatter".
  • The above point is very ironic.
  • The relevancy of so-called "chatter" depends on who you ask. Seems to be a relatively even split to me...but I think it's good to discuss it. I was only pointing out that it's a matter of opinion on whether or not it contributes.

"Also this debate is about the use of this page in particular, thus its most pertinent to be included here than elsewhere." None of this discussion pertains to information in the article at hand; it's talk about a talk page. Seems like it would be more appropriate as talk:talk:Nicholas_the_Traveler or some kind of wiki policy page (although as far as I can tell, nothing here constitutes "spam"). At the very least, the debate about whether or not people should discuss things should be moved to its own section. When I click on a section called "Annoying Collectible", I expect to see a lot of people QQing about how hard it is to farm and how dare ANet do us this "terrible injustice" - not people arguing over whether or not this is a "forum". If we use sections like they are supposed to be, everybody could find the information they want without problems. I am going to create another section for this discussion to help organize things, and hope that this discussion goes there.

If I am coming off as disrespectful in the slightest, please accept my apologies in advance. I know a lot of folks have put a lot of work into this wiki, a wiki which helped a lot of folks. I just have not seen any reasons presented for why people should not post here about this. It has been stated that it is not a drain on resources. The only reason I've seen presented is that this is not a forum don't use it like one...but I don't see a reason why not to. --The Penalty Of Sin 18:35, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Trivia

I donno, but it seems like any other type of quest in the entire game to me... they are either Fed-Ex, Killbot, or Scavenger... (IE, take something to a location, kill something at a location, or get something and bring it to me)... I don't think its worth mentioning unless you wanna flood every quest with this type of trivia? MrPaladin talk 12:53, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Agreed. This kind of trivia is merely irrelevant.
NOT irrelevant! All other collectors have fixed items they want. Nick's items change daily or weekly depending on which version you consult. With other collectors you can plan on getting what you need. With Nick it is very much more random. You do NOT know what you will get in advance and the amount of time that you know what you will need to give him is limited. There is a huge qualitative difference between Nick and all the other collectors.
OK, maybe it's not trivia, but it is very much a scavenger hunt, as compared to the 'gopher' stuff the other collectors want. --mtew 18:58, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
yer but that information is already contained in the article... sorta... weekly change and quotes are mentioned as well as any substeps... I see where your comming from... kinda a triva entry that sets him aside from the other collectors... with the right wording I have no problem with that... but what would the wording be? MrPaladin talk 19:07, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Phrasing is not my strong suit. That's why I didn't just put it back in. But I did see a need for referencing the 'scavenger hunt' idea in deference to the 'gopher' idea. Suggestions are in order. --mtew 19:16, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
As paladin said, how is that information not already covered by this?:
Nicholas the Traveler provides Gifts of the Traveler in exchange for various items to those that can find him. His location and requested item changes weekly, which occurs at 15:00 UTC (8:00 PDT) on Monday.
just curious as to what more you feel it needs? -- Salome User salome sig2.png 19:33, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
It was there for emphasis. The details form a 'wall of text' and that makes the overall difference a bit hard to see. The trivia item was (or should be) a bullet point to make it stand out. --mtew 20:08, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
A wall of text? lol?
If someone can't be bothered to read through 4(!) sentences to get the details, it's not our problem. It doesn't need to be there, it's redundant. Mini Me talk 20:11, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm assuming you mean other than the part which states:

Discussion on this discussion page?

This seems to be a hot debate...so rather than argue all day long, I offer the following suggestions. I think people should be free to discuss things here, so here are my suggestions to help keep it tidy:

  • Try to keep appropriate talk in appropriate sections. Don't argue about whether or not this is a forum in sections pertaining to getting the item of the week. Let's discuss that in this section.
  • Archive old sections

I really think that's all we need to do. Then, old sections are easy to archive (like this one once the dust has settled), and peace can return to the wiki. So, discussion on this discussion page? Discuss. --The Penalty Of Sin 18:39, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

PvX Note?

It has been suggested above to link to PvX...I think we should add this as a note in the main article: "For more information on how to collect each weeks item, see http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Guide:Nicholas_the_Traveler_Farming" Agreed? --The Penalty Of Sin 18:39, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

If it ever becomes an useful resource. why not? Right now it just says 'bring a bunch of nukers and kill mandragors', which isn't something we need a link to say. Backsword 19:06, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
The week before was somewhat more useful, it depends what needs to be farmed. Misery 19:09, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Proposal: create a subpage for Nick Traveler's item of the week

I propose that we add/create a subpage that allows people to discuss Nick Traveler's item of the week, the farming thereof, the in-game trading of these items, and their relative wootness/lameness. Chatter on Nick's Talk Page suggests that discussion of the items (and etc) distracts from the discussion around Nick's main page article. The subpage itself might be short (some comparative tables, perhaps); its main value lies in separating discussion about the items from that of Nick himself.

Proposed SubPage Names
  1. Nicholas the Traveler/Item of the Week
  2. Nicholas the Traveler/Requested Item Farming
  3. Nicholas the Traveler/Request Item Comparison

Tennessee Ernie Ford 22:43, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Agree — Create the Subpage

  • I like having a one-stop page to see what people say about the item's of the week. I find the discussions fascinating (re: items, farming them, the trade market in them, etc.) Tennessee Ernie Ford 22:43, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
  • Having subpages for non-gibbery discussion about the weekly stuff would be good. Or perhaps you could leave the current-week stuff on the the main talk page, and provide a template like monday's date which generates a "This topic is about the week of [foo]'s item [itemlink] and should be archived on [foo+7days]." header like the things we have on linsey's page. Keep an achive for each item or week, if that's not too much work. --Star Weaver 05:04, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
  • Edit: (forgot to sign) Agree, mostly. How about we just have one sub-page: "Nicholas the Traveler/Previous Items of the Week", and move all talk there once a week? --The Penalty Of Sin 19:48, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Disagree — Do not create the subpage

  • A wiki is not a forum. There are plenty of other places to discuss such things. WhyUser talk:Why Are We Fighting 23:07, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
  • Agreed with Why. Many places can and will offer this kind of thing. This is not the place. --User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png Wandering Traveler 03:30, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
  • I would agree that the wiki is not a forum, and quiet discouragement of the practice with nudges to the forums or IRC should be sufficient. Adding a subpage simply encourages the practice. I also disagree with subpages for farming discussions, since PvX is already providing a special Nicholas the Traveler item farming page complete with builds for each weekly item. Simply direct that discussion there. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 03:53, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
  • I must agree with both Why and Wyn on this. There is no need for rather meaningless discussion on the wiki, and those points that do have meaning (i.e., more than "this item is hard to farm!" comments) could and should go to the PvX wiki, or fansites. Also, keeps less clutter on the wiki page. -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 19:38, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
  • No subpage, as wyn said, this is not a forum. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 22:20, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
  • I agree. I'm not even too fond of this way of splitting the discussion, feels like people are voting or something. The wiki isn't a forum, and we don't decide the really important stuff through voting. Erasculio 03:13, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Additional Discussion / Other Thoughts

  • Also, I think Talk:Nicholas the Traveler would be a better place for both this and the following topic. Since they are relevant to that page only. I would suggest it get moved there. If you wish to bring more attention to the discussion, add it to the RfC list. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 04:00, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
  • Agreed with Wyn on both of the points above. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 12:26, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
  • To all stating "the wiki is not a forum", I do not see any justification in this. Talking about the current items each week on this page and then archiving isn't hurting anyone, even if some of it is "lol has he moved yet?". So, rather than just state what this is/isn't - what's the harm? Myself and others have expressed why they like this talk, so I'm interested in what you feel so strongly the harm is in this. --The Penalty Of Sin 20:06, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
The harm is the unnecessary spam in RC every 30 seconds when someone posts... has he been found yet? much like the wtf threads that we discourage on user talk pages. The wiki is not a forum, or an im service. Talk pages should be used to discuss the content of the associated article. If you are someone who watches RC for actual vandalism, the high number of entries during these 'sessions' makes that really difficult. People should AGF that when he moves and is found it will be posted, and confirmed as soon as possible.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 20:57, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Proposal: protect Nick Traveler's page on Mondays, until he's been discovered

People have suggested that we protect Nick Traveler's main article and talk page on Mondays, until a trusted wikian confirms his new location. There's a lot of excited and relatively non-article related chatter in the couple of hours immediately after midnight pacific time (as Nick is supposed to leave his old location) through his reappearance (at his new location). Some find this (a) distracting from the article discussion and (b) of low value (infinitesimal signal:noise ratio).

(The trusted wikian could probably be anybody who can update the item/location note that auto-updates Nick's page.) Tennessee Ernie Ford 22:52, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Agree — Protect the Page/Talk

Disagree — Do Not Protect

  • sup gais, wats goin on n tihs thred? tbh i can't see whatever problem there is (archives are there for a reason), but something that would lower the rc spam/distract people from the 0% discussions about the article (or any other sad excuse you have to QQ) would be to add some kind of farming guide to the page. --Cursed Angel Q.Q 23:39, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
  • Keeping the page unprotected would allow it to be updated more quickly and cause discussions about Nicholas the Traveler's location to spill over into other, less appropriate locations. If the page is the target of frequent unregistered vandalism, it should be semi-protected. If registered users vandalize it, they can be warned or blocked as appropriate. I don't have any strong opinion with regards to the possibility of protecting the talk page. -- User Gordon Ecker sig.png Gordon Ecker (talk) 04:50, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
  • First measures should be a warning banner, with instarchiveing/deleteing of chittery comments, warning the users who do it, and possibly giving repeat offenders a 4 hour block or something. If that dosen't work, try something like this. Semi-protect on the first few hours of monday might be a good ieda, though, not sure. Are we getting a lot of IPfoo over there? I know there's a lot of foolishness going on on the non-talk page each week . . . --Star Weaver 05:08, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
  • Make an archive for pointless chatter, if it just happens once every week. Protecting is a measure against vandalism etc, so it can be done on a case by case basis, it should not be something that happens all the time. I expect it to calm down over the next few weeks anyway. - anja talk 06:48, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
  • Agreed with Anja. Protection should only be used on a case by case basis as it has been done in the past. I do not advocate protecting a talk page weekly to quell all debate on pertinent topics. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 12:30, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

  • I think there should be a discussion/discovering section in the talk page, cleared everytime someone finds him for the week, protecting the page just seems like a form of denial to some who are rushing/excited about the location of Nick. - Vonturn Runesworth 04:13, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

No Objection — Eh, There's No Harm in Trying to Preserve Signal:Noise for a limited time

  • While the chatter seems heavy on excitement and low on valuable information, I enjoy watching people express their passion for the new feature. (Perhaps it will die down as we get used to Nick's comings & goings. Tennessee Ernie Ford 22:52, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Additional Discussion / Other Thoughts

  • I think each Monday should be taken as a separate case. I have protected the page for a short time each of the past two weeks because it becomes a vandal target due to the high volume of miscellaneous chatter on the talk page. I don't think any specific directive to protect is necessary, as our Sysop team are on the job and intelligent enough to make the call. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 03:51, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
  • What the hell happened to AGF? What is up with all this "from a trusted wikian" nonsense? It takes about a minute to confirm any new location, check it, revert if incorrect. Giving an incorrect location for 5 minutes isn't any worse than having no location for 5 minutes. Misery 06:39, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
  • As said on the talk page by misery, a very good compromise for the people who wish to discuss farming roots and the like, would be to include a corss wiki link to the relevant pvx project where they are documenting weekly farming guides for Nick's wanted item. Those people could then debate it to their heart content. Not only would it prevent nick's page from being spammed weekly but it would also direct people to a place where other people interested in the same topic could have meaningful dialogue and thus help everyone. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 12:32, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Again.. this time I forbid anyone to metadiscuss about this being a discussion or not. Just answer the question: What do you think is the right kind of collectible for nicholas. Why is one of the previous ones "good/bad" (red iris, juniberry, rare crafting, trophies, ..). And what about the locations? Personally I'd say anything up to now was very easy to farm in 1.5 hour or less. Also everything could be traded or bought. Though I have not bought any of them myself, I'd still like this for when I am unable or do not have enough time to gather everything myself. --User Karasu sig.png Karasu (talk) 17:38, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Rare Materials

I think collecting materials is vewy baed, because it cleans out the material storage of both the rare mat itself, and the constituents used to craft it from Artisans. For those who are late, their only option is to hope that they had some stashed away, or buy them at inflated prices. Also, some people would be forced to put off crafting some armors/consumables that would involve the said materials. Anet (I think it was Linsey) mentioned that it should be very rare that he does this, so it shouldn't be a problem. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 04:35, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

I agree with this. I needed linen for my elite armor, and I was planning on getting it that week after I turned in a few books for money. But then this came along and...my plans got delayed for a while. 24.233.254.51 17:08, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
Collecting linen for Nick was a joke 60.241.230.79 05:56, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
As long as the chosen Rare Material is also commonly dropped by certain foes, like Linen, I don't mind seeing the material being sold out for a few days. However, I won't like him collecting something along the lines of Spiritwood Planks, which drops too randomly from foes --Arduinna talk 08:47, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
Well I wouldn't mind if it were spirit wood planks. I happen to know a good way to farm spiritwood planks (and I have a stack of them :P). I think for every material there is a way to farm it. It's just fun to find out :D --User_talk:DewdropPepper - Dewdrop talk 09:07, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
If he started collecting Ecto, maybe their price would finaly go up again --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:81.165.106.238 (talk).

Monster Trophies

It is very likely that these will constitute the majority of Nick's requests. The Iris Flowers and the Berries are exceptions, and there aren't many items of that kind in the game. Luckily, the Mandragor Roots were not difficult to farm within reasonable time, and were available early in the campaign, so easily accessible to most characters. As long as this trend continues, I will be quite happy. If he asks for collectables that drop from rare foes (like Oni) or dungeon-only, etc, I'll be rather disappointed. So far this hasn't been an issue. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 04:35, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Those were most expected but so far NONE of the 4 things he collected were straight monster trophies (Mandragor Cakes being almost that but not exactly). Will they be annoying? Some may be sure as hell (imagine him collecting Dark Claws :s), but at least there are new challenges coming which is a great thing.--YawgYawg 08:37, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
As long as he only want the more common trophies, I'm fine with this one. It's fun to party up with other people, and although it's frustrating to only have 5 Roots after 4 runs, the gold, Rare and Green drops made up for it. --Arduinna talk 08:50, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Iris Flowers

This was a joke. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 04:35, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Indeed. Made a good introduction of the Traveler though. Both lorewise (Gwen) and gameplay wise, because people got to enjoy his gifts without much hassle. --Arduinna talk 08:49, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Juni Berries

So far, I think this is the only item of its kind, so we won't be seeing something like this any time soon. What I liked about it was the fact that the drop was guaranteed and very predictable, unlike random drops, and the farm was quite easy, especially if you used some of the more gimmicky builds to get them 2-3 at a time. The location was fairly early in the campaign, so accessible to most players. It was also unique in the fact that it could be "ran" so that everyone in the group got the reward, which was good for runnees (cheaper than buying the berries), made some money for the runners, and made it possible to run your own multiple accounts to speed things up for yourself. The repetitiveness made it kind of boring, but then again, that will be the case with 99% of his items. Farm it, or buy it, that's that. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 04:35, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Kinda likes this one. It rewarded thinking outside the box (chomping Minions), yet was also very much doable if you just did what the quest told you to. --Arduinna talk 08:53, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Actually it's because of the bug stated at the bottom of the Battledepths page. FC 16:15, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
If you head into battledepths from the Central Transfer Chamber then there are three groups nearby Garrett 16:21, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
4 groups - very useful. Bring a Prot though - Sliver Armor is teh ouch. Oh, and "Bug - resurrection shrines in the Battledepths don't work" - that's a pretty major bug, hmm? --snogratUser Snograt signature.png 16:39, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
If you go from ctc and take a right, theres 3 there. if you turn around and keep going that same hall way, theres one more group in the wall, and then another 2 groups at the entrance to HotS, then zone in and out of HotS and get those two groups. pretty fast i think. Death By An Arrow 17:30, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
There's some in Raven's Point level one, too, not sure how many; never engaged more than one group 'cause we've only been there on the gate quest. --Star Weaver 18:41, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
Arbor Bay is also a viable option, around 5 groups around the lake area there. AshTempus 20:15, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Gwen in the party

The first time you visit the garden with Gwen in your party, Nicholas does not appear, the same as Vanguard Pet Tamer. However, for subsequent visits to the garden with Gwen in your party, Nicholas appears as normal. First visit to the garden with Gwen and Second visit to the garden with Gwen (alternate links first visit, second visit). I'd re-word the note on the main page, but can't think of a succinct way to say that and still be clear. Monday writing is not my strong suit. --Nkuvu 20:10, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Note reworded, does that do? :) --Star Weaver 20:50, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

That's how I've felt most of the day, oddly. I keep thinking about going and working over that Quest thing I've been thinking about, and going "blergh zzz not enough coffee in the world." :). --Star Weaver 23:04, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Weekly's box

As there were no complains on the Zaishen Challenge Quest page I thought it would be ok to simply add something compareable to this page, as I think it good for User pages etc. Now someone reverted it and I don't see the point in this. Including the whole page is senseless and its no pain to have 4 new tags in the page. Also why should it be better to include the research page? Its more work to move the tags (or the content) instead of just edit something in them. Also the information given in this page would be better for including on other pages because it contains more details about the location (the research page only contains only the area) But as stated before I really don't understand why two times the same action results in a revert here.. Because when someone doesn't need something, they assume nobody needs it? User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 18:37, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
I made the include possible for the Zuest page. Though i am not entirely happy with it. Poke or another skilled scriper will find a better version and put it on the main page. For the moment you can use the Zaishen include. For Nicholas I've solved this differently. Look on my page for the code. Gz --User Karasu sig.png Karasu (talk) 18:40, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
You could also use to get this:

As a collector

For the week beginning 22 April 2024 (Click to refresh this if this is not the right week; future appearances are documented on the cycle page)
  • Guild Wars
    • [[]]
      • [[]] (collecting per gift)
Reminder: The Traveler often will not appear if local spawns are affected by active quests and/or quest chains.

create subpage for weekly data

why don't we just simply create something like Nicholas the Traveler/Weekly which includes different parameters in a swtich function that serve as fixed values? that could then simply be included in other articles. like this, we'd only have to edit that page. It could look like this for example:

{{#switch: <!-- insert weekly value --> |Month = May |Day = 18 |Item = Chromatic Scale |Region = Far Shiverpeaks |Location = Ice Cliff Chasms |Landmark = in Gwen's Garden |Amount = 1 |Year = 2009 |Note = Nicholas the Traveler will not appear on your first visit with Gwen in your party as her monologue event clears the garden of all NPCs. |DayCount = {{#switch: {} |1 = st |2 = nd |3 = rd |#default = th }} |#default = No parameter chosen. }}

Included in the Nicholas the Traveler article, it would look like this:

Locations
:for the week beginning (previous appearances are documented on the research page)
*Region}}
**Location}} ({{#if: {}||<!--do nothing-->}}, collecting  Item}} per gift)

{{#if: {{}|Note: |<!--do nothing-->}}

Making use of this in the Gift of the Traveler article would be even simpler:

Acquisition
Gifts of the Traveler are given by Nicholas the Traveler in exchange for various items he requests, this week Item}}. Players may only receive up to 5 gifts per account each week.

What's the point of banning for a week? They'll just come back and vandalize it next week.
