Automation

#1

Is there anyway to automate {{Automated weekly bonuses}}, specifically for Login screen announcements (i.e. format=Login screen announcements), so it will automatically display the Breast Cancer Awareness Month announcement during October (Pacific Time) each year? Unlike other announcements for special events, the Breast Cancer Awareness Month announcement will most likely use the exact same wording (since the event begins on the same date of each year) and appear on the login screen during the same time each year (i.e. 12:01 AM Pacific on 1 October to 1 November).

Also, can the same be done for the Breast Cancer Awareness Month text on {{Foreman the Crier dialogue}}? If not, a second special event parameter (e.g. "special event 2") will probably be needed to include Foreman the Crier's Halloween text, since during the Halloween event, his dialogue will include two special events (Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Halloween). Thanks. --Silver Edge 07:04, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Half done - BCAM login screen announcement will work when I sync my copy onto the mainspace version. I'll finish adding the functionality for Foreman the Crier before moving it to the mainspace, or I might mess up the mainpage (had enough trouble with a missing pipe earlier..) -Chieftain Alex 09:46, 14 October 2013 (UTC)
I'll need to see what structure the dialogue on Foreman the Crier has before adding that bit actually. -Chieftain Alex 09:48, 14 October 2013 (UTC)
You mean in what order BCAM and Halloween will be listed in his dialogue? Can you fix the issue I brought up at Template talk:Foreman the Crier dialogue? Thank you. --Silver Edge 01:09, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Foreman doesn't seem to be displaying any halloween messages btw, I wonder if anet only coded it to allow one to show. -Chieftain Alex 12:09, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
Ok the messages started when the quests and drops did. I've added it to foreman. Login screen announcement needs fixing still. -Chieftain Alex 22:35, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
I think the Halloween dialogue on the Foreman template can probably be automated too since Matthew Moore's comment seems to imply that Halloween (and probably all other special events) will start on the same date (i.e. 18 October) of each year (and probably end on the same date too). --Silver Edge 00:40, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

#2

This edit corrected one of the two instances of capitalized Guild Versus Guild to lowercased Guild versus Guild. Can the capitalized Guild Versus Guild bonus week also be changed to appear as lowercased Guild versus Guild bonus week? Thanks. --Silver Edge 08:25, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

#3

Can {{North American daylight saving time}} be automated? Pacific Daylight Time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. --Silver Edge 06:25, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

done. I couldn't believe that #time took an input so vague :) -Chieftain Alex 09:39, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

(A) The Anniversary Celebration announcement has recently started to appear on the in-game login screen announcements. It seems most special event announcements (except April Fools' Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Month) begin appearing on the in-game login screen announcements a week before the event begins. So can you edit {{Special events}} so it shows a special event announcement (except April Fools' Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Month) on login screen announcements a week before the event begins?

(B) Also, the login screen announcements is transcluded onto News#LoginScreen, but {{Automated weekly bonuses}} doesn't use the login screen announcements format there. Could you fix that too? Thank you. --Silver Edge 20:00, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

(I've annotated the sub-sections here now) point B addressed with this edit.
point A is much more difficult, it will need a second calendar. -Chieftain Alex 20:37, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
that was much easier than I expected. I think I've done as required? -Chieftain Alex 20:45, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
The Anniversary Celebration and Sweet Treats Week announcements both currently appear in-game, but Sweet Treats Week doesn't currently appear on login screen announcements and {{Special events calendar/login screen announcements}}. Is it because the dates in the template now overlap each other and the template can only display one announcement? --Silver Edge 02:22, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
yes they overwrite each other on this template -_- -Chieftain Alex 08:43, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
Regarding this edit summary, I added it because of the previous comments in this section, but the template now displays both the Anniversary Celebration and Sweet Treats Week announcements when checking with {{Special events|format=Login screen announcements|date=16 April 2014}}, so yes that has become unnecessary. --Silver Edge 17:27, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

#5

Regarding these edits of yours [1] [2], sorry, I thought this edit of yours meant that "Halloween, Breast Cancer Awareness Month" became unnecessary. --Silver Edge 08:16, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

No need to apologise, its a horrendous template! I split the "special events" template so that it calls:
  • {{Special events calendar/login screen announcements}} for the login screen bits - this produces a variable for each event name... it seemed rather unnecessary for everything else, but was necessary to avoid typing out all the possible overlapping events that appear at the same time on the login screen announcements.
  • {{Special events calendar}} for everything else - produces one variable for most events, and another for the case where breast cancer awareness month is active. -Chieftain Alex 17:39, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Disgruntled Zombie

Thank you. It's not that impressive considering that when I was doing the quest on my warrior, I had actually forgotten to set his secondary profession to monk =P, so I couldn't check the monk boss or if Candy Corn Tyrant had additional monk skills. --Silver Edge 22:31, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

oh drat I didn't even think to check the tyrant :D -Chieftain Alex 22:59, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
I eventually completed the quest on my monk and Signet of Capture showed that the tyrant didn't have any other monk skills except Mending Touch. --Silver Edge 22:41, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Template:Verify

Could you add a named parameter to that template (e.g. "link") where a wiki link can be used to replace the {{TALKPAGENAME}} wiki link. Thanks. --Silver Edge 22:41, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Done. -Chieftain Alex 00:46, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Sortable tables

For some reason the tables on several present pages (e.g. Trick-or-Treat Bag, Wintersday Gift, and Dragon Festival Grab Bag) aren't sortable. --Silver Edge 08:21, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

You need to use a header row in the table (i.e. using exclamation marks !! ). I don't see a need to sort small tables (~3 entries) though -Chieftain Alex 12:06, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Template request

Hey! So I've been using your miniature template to keep track of my miniatures, and it's been a huge help (I'm a very disorganized person by nature). I saw on your page that you're super busy lately, so I'm a little hesitant to ask, but if you have time, I have two requests for you. First, if it's not too much trouble, could you add the Miniature Legionnaire to your template? Second, and this might be a little more difficult, would you be interested in making a festival hats template, perhaps one that follows the format of the box on the festival hat page, but with rows for crosses and checks under each year's row, like there are on your miniature template? I tried making it myself, but I have the technical knowledge of your average grandmother, and I spent a few hours trying to trial-and-error my way into figuring out what the different parts of the code did, with embarrassingly little success. I completely understand if you're too busy or if you just don't feel like doing either of these things, but I thought it was worth asking. Thanks in advance! Ailina (talk) 21:33, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

On the legionnaire, no problem, I've added it to the template as an option. We are missing the ingame icon though (I don't have one since I didn't have gw installed during WR2013) - it would be amazing if you (or anyone reading this who has one) could extract the game icon using texmod, but hey thats entirely optional!
The festival hat template would take longer than the above addition, I might get around to it tomorrow or at the weekend. (ugly other user's version at User:Tender Wolf/FestivalHatTemplate) -Chieftain Alex 22:21, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks very much for the addition of the Legionnaire. As I mentioned, my technical skills are a bit lacking (hilarious understatement), so I'm not sure how to go about making such an icon, but I'm hoping someone gets around to it eventually. I can take a regular screenshot of it in my inventory and upload the image as a placeholder though, until someone makes a better one. Should I do that, or is it not worth it? Also, I saw that other festival hat template, but it's a bit... unorganized... and if you do get around to making a better template (take your time, no rush at all), that'd be awesome. Thanks again, and let me know the story on the icon. Ailina (talk) 22:51, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
texmod is really quite simple to use.. download. open. set gw as target. select logging tab. run gw through texmod. login and load the character with the Legionnaire. Press minus "-" until the icon is highlighted green. press the capture key.
yeah a screenshot will do the trick for a placeholder.
want ticks and crosses below the images, or grayed out images like
Yule Cap.png
Yule Cap.png
-Chieftain Alex 22:59, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
Just to clarify my question: Is it better to have a crappy icon than no icon at all, or is it better to leave a red link so it's more obvious to everyone else that it's something that needs to be added? Ailina (talk) 23:05, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
Whoops. Wrote that before you added your comment. Where should I download texmod from? I used to have it on my old computer (used it for carto), but I'm pretty bad at figuring out what are legitimate sources and what I should be wary of, and I don't remember where I got it from all those years ago. Also, I think I'd prefer crosses and ticks, mostly for the sake of uniformity, but I didn't realize the other thing was an option, and now I'm all conflicted, because it does look cool. Probably crosses and ticks, since that's what the miniature template uses. Ailina (talk) 23:09, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
Put together User:Chieftain Alex/Templates/Festival hats pretty quickly. Unfortunately there are 3 more Wintersday than Halloween masks, so the columns don't line up neatly. and if I put spacer empty cells in, then it looks stupid :<
I could do it by year, meaning a longer vertical template instead. -Chieftain Alex 00:02, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
Interestingly, it looked fine on your page, but when I used the template here, it ended up all screwy. I was thinking something along the lines of the box I mentioned above, with a line for crosses and ticks between each year row, but I'm not sure if that's possible, since I tried it, and it ended up all funky (to be fair, I had no idea what I was doing). As a nitpicky thing, if this is going to be the final version, the Freezie Crown and the Great Horns of Grenth should probably switch places, to group the years together. I appreciate you doing this. Ailina (talk) 00:18, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
"ended up all screwy" - that was me changing it so that all the columns had equal width :p
Freezie Crown+Great Horns of G are the same year - they're in that order so that some kind of pattern occurs between LA + K columns.
If you preferred the previous layout, by all means retrieve it from the history. -Chieftain Alex 00:29, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
Hah! I see. You must have changed it after I looked at it, but before I saved the changes on my own page. (I did it in a different tab, so yours was still open to the old format, which I didn't realize had changed). As for the Great Horns of Grenth / Freezie crown thing, on the old format, it was switched so that the Kamadan hats were interspersed with the LA hats of that year, which seemed a bit odd. That comment is irrelevant for your new format. Ailina (talk) 00:48, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Template:Foreman the Crier dialogue

Currently in the game, Foreman the Crier seems to be bugged and displays both the Wintersday and the old Wintersday in July dialogues and quotes. Can you modify {{Foreman the Crier dialogue}}, so it displays the following:

"I bring good tidings and announcements of exciting events! Right this very moment, you could be taking part in...
Wintersday
Wintersday in July [sic]
Northern Support bonus week
Guild versus Guild bonus week"
Ask Would you tell me more about Wintersday?
"Whether you like the cold or are praying for the thaw, Wintersday has something for you. Join the forces of Dwayna or Grenth for holiday quests in Lion's Arch and Kamadan. Talk to a Wintersday Priest to join the snowball fight. Stock up on seasonal treats and save your candy cane shards to get some stylish headgear!"
Ask Hey, tell me about those other events again. (Returns to the previous dialogue.)
Ask Would you tell me more about Wintersday in July? [sic]
"The snowball arenas are open and magically still frozen despite the heat of the Season of the Phoenix. Start collecting those candy cane shards and watch out for flying snow!"
Ask Hey, tell me about those other events again. (Returns to the previous dialogue.)
Ask Would you tell me more about the Northern Support bonus?
"To the tall and the small, your assistance is twice as important right now. You'll receive double reputation points while helping the Norn, Deldrimor, Ebon Vanguard, and Asura with almost everything except completed books. Take a warm coat!"
Ask Hey, tell me about those other events again. (Returns to the previous dialogue.)
Ask Would you tell me more about the Guild versus Guild bonus?
"Until the bonus ends, those who participate in GvG battles receive double Balthazar faction and Champion title points. To learn more about guilds, you'll want to speak with a guild registrar. I know I've seen them in the Great Temple of Balthazar, Lion's Arch, Shing Jea Monastery, and Kamadan."
Ask Hey, tell me about those other events again. (Returns to the previous dialogue.)
==Quotes==
"Happy Wintersday, everybody!"
"Happy Wintersday! No, you didn't mishear." [sic]

Thanks. --Silver Edge 09:31, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Oh dear :p It took a few attempts, and I've implemented it mostly as you wanted, but the last [sic] tag isn't outside the quotation marks. (I need to add closing italic '' marks to most of the dialogue template lines after they've fixed that ingame) -Chieftain Alex 13:24, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Could you edit the template so it displays Classified information? What's going on? instead of the current Would you tell me more about Classified information? What's going on??, since the dialogue options are different for April Fools' Day. Thank you. --Silver Edge 08:26, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

that looks about right. no problem. -Chieftain Alex 17:20, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Calendar

You are usually a good source for Wiki information... I am looking for the Guild Wars calendar - It is an actual image that is in the shape of a circle with dates and events etc... I cannot locate it... I would assume you know which that I am talking about? :P Thank you in advance! Gladiator Motoko (talk) 00:10, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

easy one. File:Special event calendar.jpg. do remember that it only got removed cos its a bit inaccurate :p (proper start/end dates listed at Template talk:Special events lookup) -Chieftain Alex 00:23, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Template:Weapon campaign categorization

I created {{Weapon campaign categorization}} (based off of your {{Material categorization}}) to categorize non-unique weapon pages that list two or more campaigns in the campaign parameter in {{Weapon infobox}} (since weapon pages aren't auto-categorized into any campaign category if more than one campaign is entered, e.g. Dead Staff). I need your help with it since I'm not certain how to implement it into {{Weapon infobox}}, without breaking the unique weapons auto-categorization. Would it be better to have {{Weapon campaign categorization}} also auto-categorize unique weapons or leave that to {{Weapon infobox}}? Also, is there a method to make {{Weapon campaign categorization}} categorize weapon pages that list two or more campaigns in a category for review, since most pages that list two or more campaigns could probably be listed as [[Core]] instead of multiple campaigns. Thank you. --Silver Edge 22:34, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

weapon categorization wasn't actually my template, rather it was User:Tub's, and i copied it to the mainspace without putting that in the history ;) I'll have a crack at it though. -Chieftain Alex 23:21, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
I've created a list at User:Chieftain Alex/sandbox 2 of all of the weapons and their campaign parameters. They look pretty consistent to me, we might not need the #pos template at all. -Chieftain Alex 23:38, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Would we have to remove the commas used to separate some of the campaigns? And will any piped links (e.g. [[Guild Wars Prophecies|Prophecies]]) be a problem? --Silver Edge 23:49, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
There aren't many of those, we could convert them to use <br>. (there might still be a use for a "no category" thing though) -Chieftain Alex 23:54, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
didn't see that "piped links" bit >.> thats you adding those right :D -Chieftain Alex 23:59, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
ok I've put some of the logic from your template into User:Chieftain Alex/sandbox 2. (main campaigns in capital letters, expansions in lowercase, wierdlink = something using a pipe and "guild wars", and spaceBR means there is a space between the text and the <br>. I can kill those with AWB. -Chieftain Alex 00:27, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
(a few rounds of testing later, and dozens of junk edits...) I think that the parameters are now consistent across all of the weapons. -Chieftain Alex 01:01, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Bah, too many for a real switch template. {{Weapon campaign categorization}} will need updating to capture all of these values. Dunno if the table on the sandbox will suffice for checking "two or more". -Chieftain Alex 01:19, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the help. Regarding piped links, I wasn't sure if any of the weapon pages had piped links in the campaign parameter. How would I go about updating {{Weapon campaign categorization}}? --Silver Edge 04:35, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
Or would it be better to just have {{Weapon infobox}} auto-categorize the campaign parameter similar to how the salvage parameters were auto-categorized before {{Material categorization}} was implemented? --Silver Edge 07:27, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
The way I see it, there are three ways ahead to categorize them:
  1. Now that everything is consistent in terms of how the parameter is filled out, I could run a bot through all the weapon pages + stick the relevant category at the end of the page. (I'd do this after we check core items)
  2. Use the "Weapon campaign categorization" template as you planned (probably not needed)
  3. Do it with a switch statement (its a few cases, but not so many as to be impossible).
With another step being needed to make sure that the category matches the infobox parameter (i.e. a bot running through and removing all the manually added categories)
I reckon we should remove the manual categories, and do it with the infobox using method 3. -Chieftain Alex 09:00, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
I'll run a bot to remove the manually added categories later, and add the code sitting in Sandbox2 into the bottom of the weapon infobox (directly, not as a sub template) some time after that. -Chieftain Alex 09:47, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
Manual categories removed. {{Weapon infobox}} code updated to catch all. Category:Weapon pages without campaign seems to be empty too, which is a good sign I think! -Chieftain Alex 17:41, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. It sort of always bothered me that a lot of weapon pages weren't categorized by campaign properly. --Silver Edge 20:36, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
I can't say I ever noticed it, but I think there has been a large improvement as a result of our efforts. The bit that bothers me about the infobox is the other categorization code related to attributes... it makes me think that there might be many erratically filled out parameters. only one way to check.. -Chieftain Alex 21:48, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Pt 2 - Attributes

(Reset indent) Currently, the attribute categories and attributes listed on staff and wand pages are inconsistent. E.g. some staff and wand pages, such as Amber Staff and Ancient Moss Staff, have a list of attributes in their {{Weapon infobox}} template, but the pages aren't categorized in Category:Variable attribute items or any of the Category:Items by attribute categories; while some other staff and wand pages, such as Zodiac Staff, lists "Varies" in their template and the pages are auto-categorized in Category:Variable attribute items.

I suggest the {{Weapon infobox}} does what this IP did on Dead Staff and display all the attributes available for a staff or wand based on what is listed on Staff#Other staves or Wand#Other wands. E.g. if "uninscribable" is entered into the attribute parameter on a staff page, all spellcasting profession attributes (except Healing Prayers, Protection Prayers, Soul Reaping and Fast Casting) will be listed in the Attribute(s) row; if "inscribable" is entered, all primary caster attributes (except Fast Casting) and Inspiration Magic will be listed in the Attribute(s) row; or if "inscribable and uninscribable" is entered, all spellcasting profession attributes (except Healing Prayers, Protection Prayers, and Fast Casting) will be listed in the Attribute(s) row. The {{Weapon infobox}} can then auto-categorize the pages in the applicable Category:Items by attribute categories. Also, if "uninscribable", "inscribable" or "inscribable and uninscribable" is entered in the attribute parameter on a staff page, the "Damage type(s)" row of the {{Weapon infobox}} could automatically display [[Staff#Damage types of random attribute staves|Dependent on attribute]] instead of a list of damage types. --Silver Edge 23:50, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

I've created Category:Weapons with multiple attribute requirements, which will, temporarily, list any item with two wikilinks in the attributes section (also triggers on anything beginning to wikilink after the first word, such as Wintergreen "No [[requirement]]"). I think these are the only items of interest, and everything else is currently autocategorized just fine. I think that "uninscribable" might have to also exclude Restoration Magic? -Chieftain Alex 19:56, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I guess it should also be excluded for both staves and wands. --Silver Edge 08:46, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
alright, I added these parameters to the weapon infobox a minute ago. I'll sort out some categorization later. -Chieftain Alex 09:15, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. Based on Wand#Other wands, some inscribable wands are available with Domination Magic instead of Fast Casting, while other inscribable wands are available with Inspiration Magic instead of Fast Casting. Should the template be edited for those inscribable wands that are available with Domination Magic instead of Fast Casting or should those wand pages just be edited and categorized manually? Also, could you edit the damagetype parameter based on my suggestion above? --Silver Edge 08:15, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
I don't know, I make it up as I go along, if you're indicating that the attributes appearing should be different for wands and staves, then we can do that. If you want to improvise, thats fine too. -Chieftain Alex 10:06, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
would "caster" be appropriate for weapons with any (all) req? (bone dragon staff/frog scepter/any tolkano weapon) -Chieftain Alex 11:44, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
"Caster" would be fine. Based on Staff#Other staves and Wand#Other wands, the only difference between staff and wand attributes is that some inscribable wands are available with Domination Magic instead of Inspiration Magic. I've edited the Weapon infobox to reflect this. --Silver Edge 07:25, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
When entering "caster" in the attribute parameter on staff and wand pages, should the weapon infobox display "Caster" or a list of all caster profession attributes? --Silver Edge 00:48, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
My thought was all of the attributes. -Chieftain Alex 09:26, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
I've made the change. --Silver Edge 08:16, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Could you edit {{Weapon infobox}} so that it will display "Can only be salvaged for upgrades" if upgrades is entered into the salvageable parameter? It will be used on certain pages, such as Destroyer Staff, to remove the need for the Notes section to clarify the "Not salvageable" that appears in its weapon infobox. Thank you. --Silver Edge 08:42, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

done, although i shortened the text a bit to "Only for upgrades" - the note still assists in saying that the weapons can be broken, that could be put on the line below "Only for upgrades" with a <br> --Chieftain Alex 16:32, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
I'm thinking about removing that note and not mentioning it in the template, since any weapon that can be salvaged can also be broken, and I believe the note was just to clarify the "Not salvageable" that appears in the weapon infobox.
Do you think a value parameter (similar to {{Item infobox}}) should be added to {{Weapon infobox}} to indicate weapons that cannot be sold to merchants (e.g. Destroyer weapons and Tormented weapons; all the Tormented weapon pages mention that they cannot be sold in their Notes sections)? Most weapons that are only available from weaponsmiths could also use that value parameter to display its merchant value (e.g. Norn weapons). --Silver Edge 08:18, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
Could you edit {{Weapon infobox}} so that it won't display Damage type(s) when "|attribute=caster" is used on focus item pages, e.g. Deldrimor Focus (unique). Thanks. --Silver Edge 10:14, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
Regarding the merchant value, could you edit {{Weapon infobox}} so that it automatically displays "Can't be sold" in the merchant value if no or upgrades is entered in the salvageable parameter and nothing is entered in the value parameter (so it doesn't affect Cruel Staff, Diessa Icon, Gemstone Staff, and Lotus Staff). Thank you. --Silver Edge 05:19, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

Delicious Cake

Regarding this and the block on that IP, what was written may be true based on Talk:Delicious Cake and the results that appear if you enter it into a search engine. I have no opinion on whether it belongs on the page though. --Silver Edge 09:28, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

portal probably made it well known. I've unblocked the IP, but I can't really see ANet deliberately referencing child porn. I won't be reverting my revert. -Chieftain Alex 10:34, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
Although I wholeheartedly agree with the revert, ArenaNet has a mad fetish-loving development team. The amount of references to sexually tinted subjects and jokes are quite ridiculous. The sea men quest is only the most blatantly implemented one. - Infinite - talk 11:33, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
A Sticky Operation and its quest NPCs are possibly referencing semen; however, Emily claims that they aren't, so that quest and the quest NPC pages probably shouldn't mention it. --Silver Edge 20:40, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
As she stated herself, you can't put (read: confirm) such references in a PG-13 rated game. The team can deny it all they want, but the reference is still there and very obvious. Locked Chests Appearing

Hi, i've been playing almost seven years and this has never happened before. Today i was farming Bog Skale Fins in North Kryta Province (i also do the Graven Images quest while i'm there for dust). I decided to Try Hard Mode for better drops and when i did the Graven Images quest, the nightmares spawned like usual but when i killed one of them in the third wave a Locked Chest spawned right in front of me. I did not have any lockpicks so i just ignored it, but on my next run i brought picks and it happened again! I have never heard of this happening with normal enemies so i'm wondering if i should post something about it on the quest or nightmare page. Is this a bug or what?

If not a bug than i think it may be possible that there is more to Hard Mode than previously thought. --Tidus (talk) 18:34, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

heya, I'm sure that its random if a chest spawns there or not, but its not uncommon for chests to popup with foes that popup. (you can see this behavior in factions where am fah/wardens appear + in the "good deed" quest (that one has inscribable UW items..) You could put it in the notes section if you like - something along the lines of A chest can spawn when the Nightmares appear -Chieftain Alex 19:21, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
That must be what it is because it happened in one run as soon as i took the quest. Some people were telling me it was because of graphics at low settings and the chest only appearing when getting close enough. You would think the chest would replace one of the popups though the way it just appears. Thanks for the quick response. --Tidus (talk) 19:29, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Nicholas the Traveler

For some reason {{Nicholas the Traveler dialogue}} doesn't display his dialogue this week. --Silver Edge 05:09, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

the problem was to do with the comma in the pagename - it messed up the dpl include basically because idk how to avoid it treating the comma as a regex symbol. (rubbish fix by cropping the page title after the comma and letting the regex do the rest) -Chieftain Alex 08:32, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

Could you restore Abaddon/Temp, just for a couple days? There's lore on there that can't be found anywhere else, I'd like to put it on my userspace. Costume pages

Hey there! I was going through some of the costume pages and noticed that there's several different format types for the various pages (i.e., main costume page, male and female gallery pages). I was wondering if there's a template somewhere that shows what each page *should* look like? If not, may I reformat them so they're all uniform? Thanks! -Rayven (talk) 01:35, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

There aren't any formatting guidelines specifically for costume pages, but there are for armor pages: Guild Wars Wiki:Formatting/Armor art galleries. --Silver Edge 03:12, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
That should work for the gallery pages; a lot of them already follow that format. Would it be preferred that the 'overview' gallery (which is dyed on armor pages) be the default colors and the separate pieces be in grey? ..or is there something else that you think would be more appropriate, such as a dyed overview with default components? Also, how should the 'traditional' wedding outfits be addressed, since they're unable to be dyed?
The initial reason I asked for a format was because early costumes link to the dye charts using the actual costume name, whereas later costumes use a default 'outfit' or 'headpiece'. Which would be preferred? I know it's a really minor thing, but I'm mildly OCD about certain things. =x -Rayven (talk) 22:08, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
I have no preference. You can can decide, but try to make things consistent. --Silver Edge 08:52, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

IIRC you have a bot account

Do you reckon you can bot-edit all mentions of the in-game store or the NCsoft store to "Web Store," (with verify) as they seem to have changed the dialogue for all (or at least the most obvious) NPCs in-game. - Infinite - talk 22:05, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

they never gave me bot rights on this wiki, so it appears in RC like everyone else's. I don't think I can do that task to be honest, from a quick special:search I can see quite a bit of variation in the wiki-link structure which means it'll be difficult. -Chieftain Alex 22:48, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I was actually going to ask about this, as well, concerning the costume pages, but the Web Store doesn't have all of the costumes up yet. Not sure if we should just assume they will eventually be up there? -Rayven (talk) 23:23, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Did you ever ask for bot rights on this wiki? Also, Wikichu is still a bot, and Poke is still alive, so that's always an option. - Tanetris (talk) 02:01, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
Guild_Wars_Wiki_talk:Projects/Editing_bots#Bot_flag_request probably did request it. -Chieftain Alex 07:16, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm not sure I'd count asking about the flag for one small non-automated edit spree over a year ago, since we generally give out the bot flag for... Y'know... Botting with. You should probably ask again if you ever want it for that purpose. - Tanetris (talk) 14:35, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Several issues...

  1. Is it possible to increase the value number of Mostly deprecated section of the Skill Infobox template beyond three? Numerous skills (i.e. Shockwave, Cry of Madness, ect.) have "Causes", "Removes", etc. values of 4 or more.
  2. There is an overlap with Category:Damage types and Category:Skills by cause effect. Which is the official/proper category? Should a Damage-specific parameter be created in Skill Infobox to help sort these out?
  3. Is there a way to categorize skills with "benefit from", "dependent effects", etc, and similar non-conventional categories (examples: Cracked Armor, Feeder, Overcast)? If not, can you create them?
--Falconeye (talk) 18:29, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
  1. Yes, definitely possible.
  2. The content of the categories sitting in "Category:Damage types" should be deleted/reassigned to stuff like "Category:Skills that cause lightning damage." (lowercase category names?)
  3. ANet won't be introducing any further skill updates, we can use static lists, and afaik, they're mostly complete + that would thus be a complete waste of time :p
-Chieftain Alex 18:44, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
  1. Thank you! Ive wanted to increase that variable fort 5+ years. Skill infobox looks legible now, and im starting to make sense of it!
  2. One that note, should all Category:Skills by cause effect be lowercased? I also suggest for you, SE, or anyone else re-examine Category:Skills for any redundancies, organization issues, etc. while were on topic.
  3. Time is what I currently have in abundance to waste. ^_^
--Falconeye (talk) 19:16, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
You created all the subcategories in Category:Damage types (e.g. Category:Armor-ignoring damage and Category:Cold damage) and then half a year later you created Category:Skills by cause effect with four elemental damage subcategories (e.g. Category:Skills that cause Lightning Damage and Category:Skills that cause Cold Damage). I don't see the point in these categories when the pages themselves (e.g. Cracked Armor) already have lists (which Alex previously mentioned above) of all these skills (which are already sorted by "benefit from" and "dependent effects") and the skill descriptions already link to these pages (e.g. Mark of Fury has links to Cracked Armor). The only difference is that the categories sort the skills alphabetically instead of by profession. --Silver Edge 05:53, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
I will correct that error. --Falconeye (talk) 04:14, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

MW1.23 Update

Hey guys, I've quickly run through Monobook and Vector to see if I can find + fix anything particularly broken after the wiki update (per sitenotice).

Fixed:

  • Collapsible Tables (copied from gw2w)
  • Upload Form
  • Monobook clock
  • Feedback namespace border
  • GWWT + ATools

Might change:

  • Editsection links currently float on the left like wikipedia's do. We can restore these to the right hand side easily if we want to. Thoughts?

Let me know if you find anything broken by dropping a note here or at GWW:BUG. -Chieftain Alex 23:27, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

1. The note that use to appear at the top of Special:CreateAccount that informs people to request an account on the admin noticeboard before attempting to create an account no longer appears (which is useful, since people who read it won't waste their time answering the reCAPTCHA before requesting an account).
2. The abuse filter warning messages aren't formatted properly anymore. E.g. in the account creation disabled message, Sorry! isn't bold and appears as '''Sorry!''' instead, and [[Guild Wars Wiki:Admin noticeboard|Admin noticeboard]] doesn't appear as a link. --Silver Edge 04:41, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
Fixed by transcluding MediaWiki:Gotaccount into MediaWiki:Signupstart. (could delete the first and just paste text in the second.) Use raw html for #2. -Chieftain Alex 06:45, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
Hmm might actually be a bug.. the $1 isn't working anymore either. -Chieftain Alex 06:54, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I'm not certain if it was caused by this update, but {{skill table}} no longer sorts energy nor recharge time properly. E.g. on List of enchantment spells, it seems to sort energy or recharge time numbers with one digit as if they had two digits where the second digit is a zero (e.g. "5" is sorted as if it was "50"). --Silver Edge 06:41, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

I'm building a new pc tonight - MBs/CPUS/GPUs/Cases/Fans all over my room. I'm giving priority to that, but I've fixed some of the problems here by adding a sortkey which pads the values with a zero up front to fill 3 or 2 characters. (e.g. pad "5" and "50" with zero to make up two characters total, "05" and "50" - as a result these sort properly.)
Anything with wierd fractions in it, particularly {{3/2}} will need a special case added to it. I can do this, but maybe later. -Chieftain Alex 18:47, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
I have no idea why I needed a special case for every number between 0 and 2, but well, at least it works now. -Chieftain Alex 10:34, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

Image redirects no longer redirect anymore. E.g. Resurrection Signet.jpg. --Silver Edge 22:16, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

Yep, poke dropped support for that. He had literally been adding it to the mediawiki files every time ANet did an update. I could probably run a bot through all of the skill icon files and remove the broken redirects. Hopefully most templates link to the destination.. -Chieftain Alex 09:27, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
{{skill table}} links to the icons at the moment - I could patch it to link to the skill page, or I could leave it. imo they should link to the files in these cases. -Chieftain Alex 10:37, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
Agreed, since there's a link to the skill page next to the skill icon in {{skill table}}. The only templates I can think of that is most affected by this are {{Skill bar}} (when the text parameter is set to "hide") and {{Skill bar preset}}; while {{Skill bar 2}} is unaffected. --Silver Edge 19:56, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

Template help

1

Can you edit {{Item infobox}} to display Varies in the "Value" section of the infobox on pages of non-stackable salvage items (e.g. Shiverpeak Bowmaster Vest)? For it to not affect pages of stackable salvage items (which have a fixed value), I'm guessing the template would have to be edited to not display Varies if type = Salvage item and stackable = Yes. Non-stackable salvage items don't have a fixed value, it's unknown whether the value range is suppose to be when unidentified or identified, and there isn't enough research for most (if not all) of them to note this information. E.g. Shiverpeak Bowmaster Vest is listed as having a value of 6-16 gold, but that seems to be based on normal mode (which isn't mentioned on that page), since the one that dropped in hard mode for me is well over that value (even when unidentified). Also, the value would vary a lot for non-stackable salvage items dropped by foes whose level changes greatly in hard mode (e.g. Shiverpeak Longbows' level in hard mode is almost triple that in normal mode). Thanks. --Silver Edge 03:51, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

This edit prevents the value on trophy pages from displaying (e.g. Kurzick Bauble). --Silver Edge 11:37, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
good spot. -Chieftain Alex 11:49, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, but now it seems the template is back to the way it was before the edits: it displays value on the pages of non-stackable salvage items (e.g. Shiverpeak Bowmaster Vest). --Silver Edge 00:19, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

Words at the bottom of the infoboxes on Promise of Death and Sugar Rush (long) overlap their respective infoboxes (i.e. {{skill infobox}} and {{effect infobox}}). Can you edit the templates to prevent the overlap? Thank you. --Silver Edge 07:12, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

I should be fixing this by rewriting the entire infobox... but I've put kludge fixes in instead :/ -Chieftain Alex 08:08, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

3

The value is not displaying in the {{Item infobox}} on Celestial Sigil even though the "value" parameter is used. It seems to be caused by the "stackable" parameter set to "no" on that page. --Silver Edge 09:26, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

I've simplified the code a bit, hopefully the results should be similar but fixed for this problem (section 3). However, I'm going to run *a bot* through pages which should be using "varies" for non-stackable salvage items + remove their values completely so that the problem in section 1 can be addressed. -Chieftain Alex 19:54, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Hey Alex. Can you edit {{ArenaNet image}} so when the parameter is item render or npc render it will categorize files into Category:ArenaNet item renders/Category:Item renders and Category:ArenaNet NPC renders/Category:NPC renders, respectively? Thank you. --Silver Edge 22:38, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

Hmm. While the answer is yes I can make the change, what is the difference between the two sets of categories? They seem very similar.
NPC renders seems to be manually added to most of the pages in ArenaNet NPC renders - are the two categories not identical apart from one using gallery format and the other being plain? Imo we could just add {{Category:ArenaNet images|gallery=y}} to the top of Category:ArenaNet NPC renders to make it do galleries, and delete Category:NPC renders. -Chieftain Alex 22:16, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

So, do you see the reason behind my proposal now, Alex, after the green woods-dweller came back? ;) All we need is its little tweaking, here and there... :)

As of Joe being a programmer, it's very unlikely the poster ever bothered to discover that, as he simply picked up the page's address from this thread. Dmitri Fatkin (talk) 01:38, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Minimalus Page Deletion

I disagree with your decision to delete the Minimalus UI page. It is a tool that players use in-game, and therefore fully valid to have as a page in the namespace under this policy. It is fully relevant to Guild Wars, its community, and in-game play. Other mods don't have their own pages because they never thought to do so. Where is the policy or anything that disputes the validity of this page? Please show them to me. ~ Jujin User Jujin Hope Once More Icon.jpg talk 23:57, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Moving a page is not the same as deletion per se. The page still exists at User:Jujin/Minimalus UI Mod, per my comment on User talk:Jujin/Minimalus UI Mod this matches historical note storage locations. All that the end user needs to know can be found linked from here (download link, few pictures). -Chieftain Alex 00:02, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Minor bot edits

Hey Alex, I'm currently running a script to collect the concise skill descriptions for a little project and noticed some inconsitencies there. As an aside, I noticed the links to the GW2 candidates for deletion page aren't the easiest to be found on that wiki. I mean, without knowing that the "GW2W:DEL" shortcut should exist, I never would have found it! Was there any particular reason why it isn't a tad more apparent for the average user of that site? Granted, it may just be me trying to think too hard about nothing late at night. G R E E N E R 10:29, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Well that was random. On gw2w I have a bit of javascript that sticks a link to gw2:User:Chieftain Alex/CFD in the sidebar under support.
If I was navigating to the del list, I could go "Admin noticeboard" → "...tag it for deletion..." (that links to template:delete) → See also: "list of candidates for deletion". This wiki just happens to link to the DEL page from the AN... -Chieftain Alex 18:34, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

I am sorry to cause you any grief Alex, it took me a long time "in game" just to find a player with the item. Then try to convince the player to disrobe so I can take a screen shot of the weapon from both sides. That guy must think I am a real perv for sure, but the wardrobe was purplish and clashed with the item. Was I aware, there was already such a weapon and image available, I never would have made the effort. I meant no slight against you or the people who maintain the wiki on the "God mode" level. It just seems like, every single time I try to assist or make even the smallest change, someone stomps on it and/or deletes it. So I just crawl back to my user pages where I know it is safe. Happy 10th! --Wendy Black 00:43, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
You caused Alex no grief, I'm sure. Btw, love the effort you put into getting the pic! It's wonderful to see the wiki jump to life again, and all effort is appreciated. On any other day, we may seem as dry and immovable as a desiccated corpse (or British humour - shots fired), but chalk that up to us only have text with which to communicate.
If you still have the bottom portion of that picture could you upload that? I think it would complement the one we currently use as it doesn't have armour interfering with the shot, and gives more depth in my opinion. G R E E N E R 04:38, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

Skill Nav Revamp

Requesting feedback on Skill Nav Revamp. --Falconeye (talk) 21:37, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

template:Skill infobox

Requesting assistance per Discussion. Also, is it possible to add "skills that interact with" parameters (in addition to the current "Causes/Removal" ones), and if so, how? --Falconeye (talk) 21:16, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

I keep seeing these in the Assassin attack-chain skills:

| checks = hexed | checks-true = crippled

What do they do and how do they work? --Falconeye (talk) 00:43, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
the changes requested on your talk page have been made to the skill infobox.
interacts with: I guess you mean skills like Unnatural Signet? There can't be many of them, just stick categories on the pages manually.
"checks" + "checks-true" does nothing and were added back in 2007. -Chieftain Alex 01:32, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
So its another redundant coding that serves no transclusion or categorization purposes? Is there a way to repurpose them and make them useful? --Falconeye (talk) 01:40, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
You can safely ignore them or remove them as you wish. -Chieftain Alex 01:42, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
What about the "| requires = lead" (like Mantis Touch)? Is there a way to transclude "count as off-hand attacks" into the infobox? --Falconeye (talk) 02:00, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

perfect page needs fixed

your perfect page you did looks aweful in a format resolution that I can use of 1366 by 768.

Please fix it.

Hey Alex check out my project.

I spoke to Greener and hope this greatly improves the wiki. User:Wendy_Black/UGC_Project As you know many players use uMod and TexMod to alter game graphics without harming the game. I would like your input if you get the chance stop by my talk page and say something. --Wendy Black 22:09, 14 November 2015 (UTC)

Fiddling around with event timers

Hey Alex, there was a slight delay in the weekly timers rolling over after 15:00 UTC on Monday. They were showing up as being on the 7 March week instead of the 14 March week. I made two edits to the timers, Automated weekly bonuses and Nicholas the Traveler/Cycle just before 16:00, and they both were successful in adjusting the week. If I change them back now that 16:00 has past, they remain proper.

I'm not sure if that value was meant to do anything else, and I'm hoping it'll work out next time it has to tick over. G R E E N E R 16:13, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Hello Greener. I think I remember what i was trying to do with these templates, and whilst your fix probably works, I had a quick think and I figure its probably better to replace the code with something else:
{{#time: j F Y H:i | 7 March 2016 15:00 + {{#expr: floor( ({{#time:U}} - {{#time:U|7 March 2016 15:00}}) / (60*60*24*7) ) }} weeks }}
So it calculates the whole number of weeks (60*60*24*7 seconds) between the current time ({{#time:U}} in seconds) and the time of the reset (any monday at 3pm, e.g. {{#time:U|7 March 2016 15:00}} in seconds). Adding the number of weeks between then and the original date gives us a nice way of reaching the last reset time. Better? -Chieftain Alex 16:32, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Modular arithmetic is so much more up my alley than if-then statements (I may have done well in my proof courses, but it doesn't mean I enjoyed them). Thanks for swinging by! G R E E N E R 17:01, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Automated featured article

Hey Alex, it looks like Main Page/featured article/automated grabbed Main Page/featured article as it was located in Category:Featured articles this week. I removed it from the category, but there's a chance it will also grab the template {{Featured article}} at some point (which I'm half tempted to see the results of).

Is there any way you could set the code to exclude those two if they come up? Thanks! G R E E N E R 02:43, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

I'm inclined to just say that they should be removed from the category. They're not featured articles, just pages that make the featured article section work. Someone looking for a list of featured articles doesn't need links to the backend mixed in there. I think Falconeye needs learn to use categories appropriately or refrain from adding categories without discussion. Toraen - talk 07:46, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
Not sure if another contributor needed to be called out there, seeing as there would have been no way to predict how adding the category would interact with the template.
But yes, removal may be the best. Maybe we'll see how RNG favours us when next Sunday rolls around ; ) G R E E N E R 15:57, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
It's not just that category, but sorry for that. Toraen - talk 20:57, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
You guys did good. The alternative fix would be specifying the "Main Page/featured article" under nottitlematch = on Main Page/featured article/automated --Chieftain Alex 23:17, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

Glad to see you edit

But just so we're clear, are you using the wiki to plot your course in taking over the world? If so, know that I've always been a fan and am willing to help out in any way possible. If your edit was not bent towards world domination, ignore this message and carry on. G R E E N E R 18:45, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

After trials and tribulations trying to find a python script that worked on various websites, I had to rewrite something instead, it's working now but I have a tendency to delete stuff that's on my desktop so hopefully if I need it in the future i can find it again :) -Chieftain Alex 19:35, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Lovely tile set you uploaded with AWB Alex. Can't wait to see the results! G R E E N E R 21:15, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
Well I've got something workable at the moment:
  • Unluckily the widgets extension isn't installed on this wiki, but perhaps we could request it. For the time being I've stashed it over on gw2:Widget:World map (Guild Wars 1).
  • As you've seen, I'd uploaded ~40MB worth of tiles to this wiki (of the filename structure File:World map <continent> <zoom level 0-6> <y> <x>.jpg) to support it.
  • I'm quite happy with what I've managed so far, and I could also add the bosses to it. Smiley has coordinates saved from before the german gw1 wiki was taken down.
  • I probably won't be doing Factions or Nightfall any time soon, but I've done it for one continent now so could mechanically "do" the others.
  • I've also figured out how to roughly convert the [x,y] coordinates into the gw2 coordinate space, and have plotted them in this sandbox revision.
Seems a tad better than the old "interactive" maps we did huh ;) -Chieftain Alex 12:38, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
Alex, that is jaw droppingly beautiful. I will go down to Seattle and start knocking on doors if it will help get the extensions you need. I love all the details, including the landmarks. And now I owe Smiley big thanks for saving the boss data.
I was supposed to just swing by this wiki to check on things before grabbing breakfast, but this now has me enthralled! G R E E N E R 16:50, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
All I can say is 'wow'. We needed this about 10 years ago, but you still put the time and effort in to make it now. I bow to your commitment. Also hi. - Infinite - talk 09:50, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
Justin was super kind and added the widgets extension for us (well let's be honest here... me :p) -Chieftain Alex 16:53, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
So now the trick is to find a home for the widget. Maps is a disambig page, which could link to a page solely dedicated to holding the map. I'm not sure how well it would fit on List of maps given the size of the map. Perhaps just toss it on top of Main Page/featured article/automated? I'm sure that'll work just fine. G R E E N E R 19:20, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

You just changed EVERYTHING

Oh my. So efficient. Why was this not always the thing? - Infinite - talk 21:50, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

Probably because users love categories. -Chieftain Alex 22:05, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
I've said it before, I'll say it again; to hell with the users. They know nothing. - Infinite - talk 22:34, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Can we (read: you, because I am not capable) maybe.. run a bot to change all user templates in this fashion? That would help reduce the amount of categories to keep track of by a fuckton. - Infinite - talk 22:58, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

Not a chance lol. -Chieftain Alex 20:50, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

Non-functional embedded Wikipedia and Support links

Good morning, Alex. Could you please take a look at what's wrong with [[w:]] short Interwiki link so that it differs from [[wikipedia:]] when it comes to redirecting the readers to the English version of Wikipedia on mobile devices? In the first case, my tablet PC returns a non-existing page error. Also, there's a missing link at the bottom right corner of the main page within the Wiki community section, which should be referring the visitors to https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/support/, as was originally implied. Thanks for taking a look into both of these issues. Dmitri Fatkin (talk) 08:11, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

I terminated the "forum" interwiki since it's not a wiki and should never have been created. Doubtless there will be more links to it around.
Not sure what the problem with "w:" is, but it was redirecting to en.wikipedia so I've changed the address, let me know if that fixes the issue. -Chieftain Alex 06:23, 12 July 2017 (UTC)
It seems that the first Interwiki link works fine now, as well as the one on the main page. Thanks for the updates. Dmitri Fatkin (talk) 19:54, 16 July 2017 (UTC)

Interwiki links https

Hey, I'm writing here (to you) because I see that you've been modifying the Special:Interwiki data. We might want to change them all (except wikia and guildwiki) to be https instead of http C4K3 User C4K3 Signature.jpg Talk 14:36, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

I've updated the links as per some mediawiki advice. Three sites didn't support the https, so they still have http hard coded. G R E E N E R 16:20, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

Testing something?

I'm rather curious: MediaWiki:Searchsuggest-search. G R E E N E R 05:31, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

It that's not filled in, then it shows "Search Guild Wars Wiki" instead of just "Search", it was a forwards-compatibility thing to fit with the upgrade emails (wondering why you're not on the distribution list for those). -Chieftain Alex 18:47, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

A question regarding the differences between two methods of DPL extension calls

Good evening, Alex. Is there a chance you might know of why this kind of DPL invocation proceeds 'lastrevisionbefore' parameter just fine and the second one simply omits (while still able to recognize 'lastrevisionbefore' switch) the specified revision date ranges & goes for displaying almost all the existing content within defined namespace? I'd be very grateful if you could explain to me why this difficulty exists or provide a pointer to the appropriate discussions or manual pages. Thank you.

Case 1 ('lastrevisionbefore' works as intended here):

{{#dpl:
|namespace = Guild
|uses = Template:Inactive guild
|notuses = Template:Historical guild
|ordermethod = lastedit
|order = descending
|addeditdate = true
|addlasteditor = true
|noresultsheader = Sorry, nothing was found.
|resultsheader = Total: %PAGES% / %TOTALPAGES%

|lastrevisionbefore = {{ #time: Y/m/d-H:i | now - 24 months }}
}}

Case 2 (where its specified date ranges express strange behavior & seem to stay unaccounted at all):

<dpl>
namespace = Guild
uses = Template:Inactive guild
notuses = Template:Historical guild
ordermethod = lastedit
order = descending
addeditdate = true
addlasteditor = true
noresultsheader = Sorry, nothing was found.
resultsheader = Total: %PAGES% / %TOTALPAGES%

lastrevisionbefore = {{ #time: Y/m/d-H:i | now - 730 days }}
</dpl>

Dmitri Fatkin (talk) 01:09, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

I would avoid using the second type of syntax with the tagname <dpl>...</dpl>
I imagine that the issue is that the MW software attempts to parse the content in a different sequence for the two types of syntax. I don't know precisely why but it seems the case 2 syntax doesn't expand properly before DPL tries to parse it.
For what its worth, the only differences that mattered in the above two examples were (1) the tag type (html or wikicode), and (2) the time parameter being used. --Chieftain Alex 18:13, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
The time parameter in the second variation is what keeps me puzzled for the last 5 days: I simply cannot understand why the initial setting of 24 months, of which 730 days are equivalent of causes the script to return absolutely none processed results if attempted to use despite the fact the underlying date parameter input is exactly the same, and the reason of that is probably the parsing problem you told of... Dmitri Fatkin (talk) 21:54, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Fix me quick

Hello, have you noticed that last edit of Weapon spell article doesn't work (look at the bottom of page)? Maybe it did at the time of edit, but not now. --109.252.109.50 09:56, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Inscribable weapons

Is it possible to add an "| inscribable = y" option into the "template:Weapon infobox"? I just created a Category:Inscribable weapons due to anniversary weapons being Inscribable. --Falconeye (talk) 15:40, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

How exactly is that category going to be useful? It'll apply to all non-unique weapons dropping in Nightfall, EoTN and from end-chests of Elite Factions missions. -Chieftain Alex 12:28, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

recent changes

Hey Alex, is there a way to filter by individuals? Filter out a specific user tb more sbecific. I know you can filter by all IP or all registered users, but I'd like a better granularity. Thanks, Steve1 (talk) 10:16, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Assuming you're using the "non-javascript interface" per Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rc, you can probably copy the code from gw2:User:Dr ishmael/monobook.js (hideUser). -Chieftain Alex 12:27, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Bcrat doesn't look very demanding, I think I could handle it for a bit if it was asked of me. -Chieftain Alex 17:06, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
Alternatively, we could nominate more than one person, so that there's actually a choice. Steve1 (talk) 17:26, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
Someone who was recently confused why they got nominated messaged me asking if I was interested, what exactly are you all looking for? I do not really do much other than check the wiki daily and verify changes/find new information game-wise, I more so care about the game side rather than the technicals of the wiki code, but if something is needing help I am interested. Keep in mind that anyone is able to create an RFA, even for themselves. My goal with this change (see here) was to open up meta-wiki discussions to a broader audience, which is why I specifically chose several people who I've seen actively editing the wiki recently. As I mention in the link, if you feel you'd be a good addition then by all means please add yourself to the list. horrible | contribs 17:46, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Sysop rights cleanup

Hey, I indeed still have notifications enabled (and got hit by about 30 emails from you moving never touched pages I still had on my notify list). I'd reply on my account ... except, the wiki does not display any pages, except for preferences, once I am logged into my account. That might have to do with it requiring me to choose a new PW when I tried to log in to reply to you. Given my past and planned future activity, it does not matter much, but I have to say I feel taken for a fool by the wiki for being forced to change my PW to log in to then not being able to edit while logged in, lol. --Xeeron 87.181.253.26 00:30, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

Finally found a way to edit. On this account, it only displays any page (outside of preferences) if I switch to mobile view. Made a testing account (Xeeronslogintestsockpuppet) that displays everything perfectly fine on normal view. A very very weird bug. --Xeeron (talk) 00:53, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
Hey, thanks for the reply. Sounds like your user CSS/JS might be preventing pages from loading properly. I will blank them for the time being, you can always revert it if you figure out a different solution. -Chieftain Alex 08:44, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
Well I've blanked the CSS/JS pages you had, nothing looked like it would prevent anything from showing though Having tested it, it seems likely that the cause was the bit
// installs [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Cacycle/wikEd wikEd], an in-browser text editor
// with wiki syntax highlighting
 document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'
 + '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');
Scripts can't be loaded from unprotected pages on Mediawiki anymore, plus there's things like modern browsers blocking mixed-active content. -Chieftain Alex 08:46, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, works now. That would have taken me forever to figure out. --Xeeron (talk) 11:37, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

Random question

Hi Al. Purely for nostalgia's sake, I thought I'd ask an irrelevant and inconsequential question and pretend you have nothing better to do. ;)

Why do RC actions use a different timestamp to signatures? It seems one is server time and the other is local, or am I having one of my traditional senior moments?

I see nothing much has changed on the good 'ol wiki, just the drama is coming from newer faces. Not touching the RFAs with a bargepole. Even though it's a sensible step, it would feel like putting a bullet in the head of an old friend. Certainly not going to put any "aye" votes either, as that would be too silly even for me. Sigh.

Thanks for accommodating an old man's ramblings. — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 14:30, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello Snograt. Of course I have nothing to do... I'm so bored that I've done the weeding in a garden full of rocks, a la prisoner circa 1800.
... actually that is a lie. I'm running a biology experiment. I've split the garden into 20% segments, and weeded 60% of it, leaving the two other 20% bands as an experiment to see if the weeds grow faster in the bare patch or not.
Thinking about signatures, I've no idea really. I know that on some of the older wikis the signatures used to use the local timestamp (so you'd get Americans with PST, Eastern Europeans with CET, all on the same talkpage), which was confusing as heck - that doesn't seem to be the case anymore afaik. Recent changes should just follow whatever is in Special:Preferences > Appearance > Time offset. Given that the clock in the top-right by the username shows the local time per browser/pc settings, I haven't really noticed it for a while (I used to get flak for applying the Unsigned template with my timezone preferences enabled).
With respect to getting involved with the RFR's, it would have been my preference too to not get involved, but I figured someone should do some cold blooded analysis on their last edits, with the occasional acknowledgement of their accomplishments before even I was a sysop. I'm pleased we've managed to kick-start a conversation, even if it was by throwing some bricks at some talk pages. -Chieftain Alex 15:06, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
