Render of Abaddon's head. |
“And so it came to pass that Jadoth, being persecuted by the horrific Forgotten armies, and hounded from his home, did seek refuge among the cooling mists of the Crystal Sea. Untold weeks passed as Jadoth huddled in his sanctuary, with nothing to see save the endless ripples of the boundless ocean.
On the 51st day of his exodus, a frightful sight manifested before Jadoth's eyes: the unmistakable shape of Forgotten warships upon the horizon's shimmering edge.
And prayed Jadoth, "Abaddon! Lord of the Everlasting Depths, Keeper of Secrets, open mine eyes and bestow upon me the knowledge of the Abyss that I might smite mine enemies and send them to the watery depths!"
An unsettling silence swept across the waves. The twilight sky shattered and stars streaked down upon the Forgotten armada. The seas boiled and ruptured, and gave birth to a maelstrom from which not even light could escape, and transforming the sky above into a midnight void.
And thus was magic gifted to Jadoth, chosen of Abaddon, the first of the Margonites.
— Scriptures of Abaddon, 1 BE
Abaddon is the fallen God of Water and Knowledge. It's said that prior to his fall, he was just, generous, and fair, and was handsome with imposing blue eyes and blue wings. He wore a six-eyed mask with tentacle designs crossing over his head. He was recognized as being the wisest among the Six, and his insight was highly valued when the gods held council. Since his fall, his appearance changed greatly - now appearing as a head and two arms, with insectoid features and the eyes being part of his being rather than a mask. After his fall, he was imprisoned in the center of the Realm of Torment, an area known as the Heart of Abaddon.
History[edit]
For thousands of years, Abaddon acted as a bridge between the the Mists and Tyria. When the gods decided to gift magic to the world, Abaddon was the one who took on the task, giving a unique magic to each group of creatures he deemed worthy. However, he gave magic out too freely, and the civilizations that received magic rose to prominence and beginning to wage wars on each other. When King Doric saw his people's plight and requested the gods to take back magic, the other Five Gods split the Bloodstone into five, reducing the capabilities of magic. Abaddon was furious at this and protested strongly to the other gods, but he was ignored.
One particular tribe of Abaddon-worshipers (some historians speculate these to be an offshoot or ancestor of Luxons) lived exclusively on the Crystal Sea. During that time, it was a beautiful and bountiful place, nested between Tyria and Elona. The people there worshiped Abaddon exclusively, and upon hearing the news of the revocation of magic, they launched an attack on the Temple of the Six Gods, a great place of worship on the northern shores of Elona. They slaughtered the priests of the Five, desecrated the altars, and defaced the statues and scriptures within that holy place. While the Five were understandably furious, it was their mortal followers, the Forgotten, whose anger burned the brightest. A mighty legion, the likes which were not seen before, was gathered to quell Abaddon's insolent followers, and what followed was the largest naval battle ever seen in human history.
But the crude magics and technology of humanity was no match for that of the Forgotten, and in time, the tribe's great armada was soon annihilated, and the sole survivor desperately prayed to his god for deliverance. For a long time, there was silence. When Abaddon answered, however, the answer was clear. The waters beneath the Forgotten fleet began to bubble as large whirlpools formed. When the sky should have been filled with dawnlight, it was torn apart by abyssal tempests, and a fearsome devouring darkness appeared from beneath the Forgotten fleet. No living being emerged from the endless darkness that came from beneath the waters, except for one. Jadoth. He became the first champion of Abaddon, and the first of the Margonites. Hate and anger had overcame Abaddon completely, and with a vengeful roar, war, once again, was declared upon the Gods.
As the mightiest of the gods, the war went in Abaddon's favor, for a while. In the end, however, he was no match for the combined strength of all the Five. At the Gates of Heaven, Abaddon was struck down, leaving a vast Crystal Desert where there was once a sea. Unwilling or unable to destroy their brethren, the Gods imprisoned Abaddon in the newly-created Realm of Torment, along with a host of his Margonite followers. A powerful force of Forgotten was sent to safeguard Abaddon's prison-realm, and the spot where Abaddon fell became known as the Mouth of Torment. The city of Morah was established to maintain a vigil there, where the link between our world and the Mists was weakest.
Imprisoned in the depths of the Domain of Anguish, Abaddon slowly recovered his strength and plotted his vengeance. Over the millennium after his imprisonment, he sent out demonic servants to subvert the mortal realm. One servant of Abaddon persuaded Shiro Tagachi to murder Emperor Angsiyan during the Harvest Ceremony and cause the Jade Wind. The titans, sent under Abaddon's orders, acted as gods for the charr and gave them the capability to perform the Ritual of the Searing. When the charr were reaching Arah's gates, Razakel coerced Vizier Khilbron, a follower of Abaddon, to use the dark magics of the Lost Scrolls, which caused in the Cataclysm. This all set the stage for Abaddon's plan to unleash Nightfall.
Throughout the lifetime of the Kournan Warmarshal Varesh Ossa, General Kahyet, Varesh's dervish mentor and a secret worshiper of Abaddon, groomed the Elonian leader to fulfil an ancient prophecy known as Nightfall, whereby Abaddon would be returned to the mortal plane with the Great Margonite Temple as the centre of his rule. In 1075 AE, this plan came to fruition and Abaddon, with the help of Dhuum and Menzies, was almost successful. The prophecy was ultimately stopped by the Order of the Sunspears and the Order of Whispers, who entered the Realm of Torment itself to defeat him. But the power of a god cannot be destroyed, only transferred into another vessel, and in his final moments, Abaddon's power threatened to run out of control and bring about Nightfall regardless. Using a power that had been granted to her by the Five, Spearmarshal Kormir absorbed the vestiges of Abaddon's power, and in the process became the Goddess of Truth.

Notes[edit]
- Abaddon has 12,240 health in normal mode and 13,200 health in hard mode.
- Descriptions in the gw.dat state that Abaddon was creating a new body during the course of Guild Wars Nightfall, as he "coalesces part of his godform" as the event of Nightfall is brought about. This may explain why he is fought as a head and two arms.
- Abaddon's mask, sword and right gauntlet can be seen in the Ruins of Morah mission.
Trivia[edit]
- Abaddon's arms are actually separate models - his in-game model is just a head.
- The name "Abaddon" is the English form of the Hebrew word "Avadon" (אבדון), which translates to "Doom". In demonology, Abaddon was chief of the demons of the seventh hierarchy and was called The Destroyer.
- If your every human party member uses the /dance emote before engaging Abaddon he will perform some warrior dance moves before slaying your entire party with the message "You got served!", likely a reference to the 2004 dance movie You Got Served. The /dancenew emote does not trigger the effect.
- Abaddon is the largest foe in Guild Wars.
