Once upon a time, Ascalon was a beautiful, fertile land of rolling green countryside and magnificent cities. Her people were viewed as a bit grim by their neighbors, but this was perhaps to be expected, given their never-ending war against the Charr. Indeed, it was their unfailing vigilance, their Great Northern Wall, and the blood they shed each year to defend it that had protected not only Ascalon, but also Kryta and Orr through the ages.
In the final years of the last Guild War, the people of Rin looked to a soldier named Adelbern, a simple man of humble origins, who rallied the people with his courage and cunning and steeled them not only against the guilds of Orr and Kryta but also against the terrors of the Charr.

[edit] Notes
- Pre-Searing Ascalon (and the region as a whole) is more a time than a place, being two years before the rest of the game. It exists outside the scope of the rest of the GW domain, therefore, players in this region do not have access to the Vault Box (i.e Storage) and guild members will not have access to their guild hall. Items cannot be transferred into pre-Searing Ascalon, or "into the past", from any other part of the game (except in the case of some early bugs), but items may be taken with a character out of the area or "into the future". Because of this unique isolation from the rest of the game, this region has a self-contained economy and many players choose to remain here, working towards the title Defender of Ascalon or just preferring this region to the ones after the Searing. This region does not have a neighboring one since it exists in the past.
- Replacement armor is available from various pre-Searing armor collectors which has an improved rating.
- There are no henchmen in this region with the exception of the Ascalon Academy Mission. You do not have a choice of henchmen for the mission.
- There are statues of the Five True Gods in this area, but kneeling before them will not summon avatars. As such, blessings are not available in this region.
- Purple items have been spotted in the Northlands. A Charr Bag and a Charr Salvage Kit are also dropped in the same area, but only by the bosses.
- This region does not have a town (Ascalon City is an outpost).
- Once you leave this region by completing the mission Ascalon Academy, you cannot return. Performing this mission triggers the Searing.
- There is no death penalty in this region.
- Enemies in this region will not scatter automatically due to recurrent AoE damage like Fire Storm.
- The "Clean Map" to the right shows an explored area to the east of the river just outside Ascalon. This is the Ascalon Academy the playing character enters as the last act in pre-Searing. This area is explored as part of the Ascalon Academy mission.
